The vibe is incredible, they have up to 9-15 pool tables, darts, and a Shuffleboard. It's a 2 story building and have outside sitting for both floors! Theres the main bar on the inside (1st floor), and two outside (1st and 2nd floor). The service is amazing, the staff is friendly and quick, and the food is delicious! They have pizza, wings, fries, nuggets and of course I can't forget the beer! I love coming here with friends, it's great to hangout and have fun! read more

Big mixed feelings!! Popped in here before seeing a show at Paper Tiger, had a great drink, the bartender was friendly and efficient. Went to the show and decided to go back to Joey's with a couple more people with us, had another great drink, chatted a lot with the bartender; he was showing us photos from his phone and sharing his Hot Fries, things were fun until we suddenly get kicked out!!! Y'all! I was and still am offended and shocked by this. I've never been kicked out of anywhere, none of us were drunk and as far as I'm aware, everyone was being kind and respectful, so this really came out of nowhere for us and they wouldn't give explanation why. I do want to note that there was an EXTREMELY intoxicated man sitting alone at the bar next to us, like slurring and not making sense, but was still being served shots. I did witness him shouting something rude and somewhat racist shortly before we got asked to leave, so I think maybe they thought those comments came from our group?! Idk ... either way I'm super disappointed in the outcome of our visit and a little salty that I tipped so well only to be treated poorly. Anyway - the drinks were good, the bartender was friendly, they have a ton of space for billiards, etc and the pizza smelled sooo good. Not sure if I'm allowed back, but I def want to try the pizza. Came here recently and witnessed a bad experience. Upon arriving I walked up to the bartender(short, chubby guy with a ponytail) and asked if he had a local beer. -Him: a what? -Me: a local beer(second time) -Him: what?? -Me: A beer, from San Antonio -Him: What?!! -Me: A beer, local to San Antonio...like freetail or something -Him: I got lonestar -Me: No freetail? -Him: yeahhh, I got freetail Chill at the bar for about 15 min to witness a guy walk in, and ask the same guy for a lonestar(less decipherable than when I asked, this dude was white) and the bartender is like "Yeah, I got it." Ok whatevz, maybe he's a regular...whatevz I go outside and come back in and ask the same bartender for water, and it's the same thing...it's like the dude's ears are clogged and the only way to unclog them is to ask the same question 3 times. As I was asking for water (over enunciating and practically screaming) people around the bar were looking at him like "how can he not understand?" I get my cup of water, cool. My buddies show up and one of them uses a Mexican ID card. The white dude says "I can't read this shit" and flings it back to him and follows with a "you're not supposed to be here" and walks away. At that point i told my buddies to gtfo and go somewhere else. Speaking with the bartender at a neighboring bar, this is common from this short pony tail dude. I asked a buddy who has been going to the strip for 10+ years and asked him honestly "well maybe he's not racist and said it like a 'you're not supposed to be here because your ID doesn't state your age' or something along those lines." But he's like "nah man, that dude gives me the same shit, I usually go to the girl or someone else. He gives a lot of people a hard time" When people have to avoid someone just to get service because they don't want to be racially profiled, it's just sad. Sad people can't move on from the "good old days" and sad people can't treat everyone as equal. I am Hispanic and I'm sure the reason he was giving me a hard time was because he did not like the way I looked. I had a hard time getting service and I am pretty level headed and appreciative of who ever is attending me when I go out. I will take my business elsewhere and spread the word to everyone that goes to the strip. read more

Decent bar with music that would go silent for a few minutes, to then back on again. Not sure if they were playing from a playlist but it would be nice to keep the tunes rolling. It was slow when I went just for a Cabernet and my friend ordered some mozzarella sticks. They were out of a drink my friend wanted, which made the bar lose out on some money since she ordered water instead. The mozzarella sticks also took the longest time to hit the table. Not too sure why when it was slow, but hey at least she got them in the end. Probably won't come back unless I come for the pool tables. It felt off from the get go, the bartenders and "waitresses" are rude, questions are met with sighs and irritated face like they're annoyed you don't know their rules or how it works. I sat at the bar and I asked if they had Michelob and the bartender just made an annoyed face and pointed at the draft handle like ok, sorry I didn't see it, just say yes or you know, communicate like a human being. Anyways, I got a pool table and asked how/where to order food, and again I received an irritated look that she had to explain where to order food. It took me moving away from SA to actually visit this place! Not sure how that happened, but I've resolved that problem now. Great bar where everybody knows your name. Lots of locals but a good mix of visitors as well. There's a patio space as well as plenty of pool tables. The interior is just dim enough. There are about a dozen craft beers on type and a full bar. The interior of Joey's is pretty cool. You enter into an old school saloon-style bar that has the old school western feel to it. The bar has the huge mirrors behind the liquor bottles, with dark hard wood making up the entire bar itself. Aged wood booths are right next to the bar, and a banister with small tables/chairs at the top of some thin staircases. The next room has the shuffleboard, several pool tables, two dart boards, and electronic jukebox. The murals are pretty cool too. I didn't even notice there was booze mixed into the traditional depictions. I've been here on a Saturday night, and Wednesday afternoon, both times were pleasant. The Saturday night I went was calm, even thought the surrounding areas are turnt up. That makes for some very limited and restrictive parking situations. Definitely need to be careful driving a sedan or smaller, since there are some huge holes in the dirt parking lot and low/no lighting. The staff was nice both times, but the wait-staff gets stretched a bit thin on the weekend. During the week my fiancé and I just got drinks at the bar and took them into the game room. Weekend, when I went with my buddies, we didn't plan on drinking anymore and rightfully so. We would've gone thirsty. It's hard for a single waitress to make rounds around the room when people are grabbing her attention right when she enters it. This place is great to chill after work and hangout out, but I wouldn't get drunk here. Especially because this area of town deals with a lot of nightlife, which means egos, and saturated with police. read more

If someone would have told me that I was going to find a 5 star bar in a shady part of San Antonio, I would have laughed. This might be long, but I promise you'll want to read it all. It's good news! Where to start?! Great parking options. They have a private back lot plus there is street parking. Yes it is dark, but there was cop walking the premises. They have an amazing patio. It's two levels, up and down, plus a fire place for when it's cold and fans for when it's hot. Chiminea's, picnic tables, strung lights .... perfect. Their inside has several seating options as well. There is down stairs seating by the bar and a mezzanine of sorts above it. Then there is the pool room with several open tables, plus the massive dart room. There were many open tables with chairs and stools, and a little bar area between the darts and pool. There are cool murals on the walls and a great selection of music on the juke box. Smoking is allowed in here but it didn't really feel like a smokers bar where we were because the place is so big that it doesn't really stick to you like it does in some smaller venues. Now the biggest surprise EVER?! They have seriously one of the best pizza's I have ever had. Like, top 2 pizzas and it's competing for number one. It was the perfect size for two people, the cheese was stringy and delicious and the pepperoni wasn't too hard or too soft. Now, I will say this. It is pretty greasy and not healthy in anyway what so ever. So take that into consideration. Now other people were talking about this being a place for locals only or for the "older" crowd. I'm 26, I'm from Houston. I fit in this place in every way. The bar tenders were nice, the servers were nice, and I loved that I could hear my husband when we were talking, and that there were so many places and options for different vibes. My friends brought me here since the previous bar we were at didn't know how to make an Old Fashion or a Rusty Nail. It's one of the nicer bars on the street and the night we came in, it was rather empty for Wednesday evening and there were only men sitting at the bar. We sat ourselves in one of the corner tables to begin our night and my friend placed our drinks. Friend: "Do you make rusty nails because the last bar we were at couldn't make it." Bartender: (gives my friend a dirty look) "I am a bartender." She placed a couple orders of rusty nails along with a couple old fashions and came back to our table with the orders and I was ready to begin my night. The old fashion was a little too sweet for me so I passed on it immediately and gave it to my friend who liked fruitier drinks. However, the sweet, sweet taste of the Rusty Nail put a wonderful smile on my face that I ordered another one and it was mixed to perfection again. I wanted to push myself a little since I was on vacation and told my friend we should order the Four Horsemen and the Apocalypse. The other two gave us a wide eyed look and became a little nervous but reassured them that there's nothing more fun than mixing drinks. We placed our orders and that definitely gave us the kick we needed. However, the night was still early and we headed over the next bar. Joey's is an above average bar located right across the street from White Rabbit and just feet from the amazing Demos Cafe. It is a great place to grab a drink before a show at White Rabbit and after dinner at Demos. LOCATION AND DECOR: It is convenient in every sense of the word. It's a cool and colorful neighborhood and Joey's is right smack dab in the middle of it. The building is actually pretty vast and has a number of sections: A large pool table area with 9 tables, a dart playing area, a decent sized bar area, an upstairs balcony seating area overlooking the bar and two outdoor patios (one upstairs, one down). The bar is really nice looking, quality woodwork and the gentle lighting help the place look nice and even a little sophisticated. DRINKS: I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food, but I did see the pizza out bartender brought out and WOW, it looked good!! The drinks are poured well, in clean glasses (you would be surprised how often they aren't) and they are priced very fairly. I will say they have a huge Scotch/Whiskey selection but not enough rums and vodkas for me. But that shouldn't affect your decision to come here, it is a great vibe with good drinks and it's a hell of a lot better than drinking at the Rabbit during a show. STAFF: Bar staff was very professional, very polite and was actually helpful and didn't just laugh at me when I asked where Demos' was (it was right next door). He was quick attentive and did a great job. Overall, this is a great place to hang out before or after a show. I really want to get down here someday when I don't have a show in Austin and check this place out on the weekend. Did I mention that you can smoke in the bar here? Came here on a somewhat festive Friday night with some friends hoping to observe and get to know the locals. My friend (Abigail A.) ordered a water because she had kindly offered to be the designated driver for the evening. The bartender asked us all for our IDs and we promptly presented our respective IDs. Then to my chagrin, the bartender them told my friend she had to leave. Wait . . . what? Now admittedly her ID was a bit expired, but my friend, well all of us, are well over 21. I mean gee whiz, tee hee, maybe we take darn good care of our skin and we've consumed enough alcohol to preserve our youthfulness for eternity (if only), but yeah that's not really the case. And furthermore, girlfriend just wanted a water! Bartender directed us to the doorman, who had wandered off when we originally entered and my friend asked him if it would be okay for us to stay at the bar as she only wished to consume water and hello, look at her, she was definitely over 21. But alas, he also refused us and tried to initiate some diatribe about why they were so strict . . . I mean, I guess I can kind of give props for their hard-line approach about having valid IDs - keeps the kiddos out, which I am all for. But what a freaking bummer! Other than that the placed seemed pretty legit and a slightly older more mature crowd (to put it lightly) than The Mix next door. Too bad we didn't get to fully experience it. Maybe I'm being a jerky and criminally-minded, but all the other bars allowed her some leniency for the expired license. It's taken awhile, but this place has really grown on me. It's your friendly, neighborhood bar!! It's very laid back, with touch tunes (who knows what kind of music you'll get on any day!), pool tables, and GREAT BAR FOOD. Seriously, their pizza is amazing. It's light, puffy, and has the perfect amount of crisp. I just ordered their nachos for the first time and they layered each chip individually with beans and cheese. This is how nachos are supposed to be made! The service here is what you would expect for a casual bar. They do have a grumpy bartender, but don't take it personally, he's grumpy to everyone. This place is my favorite bar on St. Mary's. The place is laid back with a good selection of beers, full bar, food and plenty of pool tables. The drink prices are average and I'm not sure if there's a happy hour because I've only been later at night. The pizza is good, especially considering the limited menu and fact that it's not a restaurant. The pool tables are priced by the hour and while I can't remember the rate, it's nothing unreasonable. The music is a digital jukebox, so music selection is rather eclectic. Everything is great except the service. The waitresses do a good job but the bartenders aren't friendly and move rather slow. They also keep the TVs on their shows, although they will reluctantly change one TV from Duck Dynasty to the World Series if you ask. read more

Yeah so I don't come here because they have just the right size beer list or because I want to play pool or because I know I will run into some friendly faces I haven't seen in awhile. The PIZZA brings me back. I don't care if you think I am crazy. Joey's has some really good pie. It is just the right amount of sauce, bread, cheese and grease. The price is also perfect, $14.29 after tax for a large that was enough for 3 people. Don't get me wrong Joey's is a great place to drink with friends or drink with new friends you meet. I appreciate their jukebox jam selection but the sound isn't overpowering so here is a word to the wise ... you WILL miss your jam if you get carried away in conversation. I have been a frequent patron of Joey's since 2001 and there has never been a rude bartender or door guy. I also have never been witness to customers getting into fights or starting trouble so I feel comfortable closing out the night there. Joey's has a relaxed feel and caters to a 30's plus crowd. If you just want to chat and actually hear the people around you in a nice looking environment, this would be a good place to go. They have patio with a few long wooden benches and tall stools and an interesting looking spiral staircase that takes you to another seating area. Also, Joey's has a large room with pool tables adjacent to the bar area - another great asset. Something about Joey's makes you just feel so nostalgic... I don't know ... I will say that your mileage may vary here contingent on the bartender on duty: our first server was (to put it politely) sort of going through the motions. Putting our pizza order in was a rather laissez-faire experience (I'm reasonably sure he forgot to do it at all until someone else's order came up), but after the shift change, the whole outlook of this place livened up. I'm glad we stayed for another round. The second barkeep was terrific: engaging, the kind of guy who remembers you from the last time you were in, and quick with a pour. It was a great kick start to the rest of our evening. We tried a pepperoni pie. too, and noticed that the slices came out piping hot and small enough to easily cram down your throat in haphazard manner....so that's what we did. They have Alamo pilsner on tap, and it was a worthwhile counterpart to those warm slices. We'll be back. read more

I have always liked coming here. It is a nice place. My only problem is when I put my cc down to buy some drinks for a birthday celebration. I was there only for a short time and bought multiple rounds. When I closed out 161.00 tipped generously 40 and left. It wasn't til the next day I noticed on my AMEX that my card was authorized several times 5 more and had pending charges. I waited to see if they l dropped and sure enough they posted another charge for 192.00. At this moment there are still 3 pending charges. I only signed one tab. I think the employees run the place they allow the birthday party to continue to charge on my card even after I was gone and signed out. Not good business. I enjoy coming to this bar because its very casual. This place does offer outside seating and rooftop seating (of a sort). The bar offers some different cider selections and draft beer, which are pretty reasonable. The establishment has a jukebox,which has a good variety of music. The pool tables and darts are also available If I remember there are four..maybe six pool tables and two dart boards. There is parking behind and on the side of the building. I started going there years ago when it was a good place for a PR guy to run into all sorts of media types. It was their hangout. Not so much anymore, but the mix of people is still ideal, for me. They are a variety of young and old, urban workers and professionals. Crowd gets younger and more numerous as the night goes on. Happy hour is usually small. But prices are typical bar prices. The main part of Joeys is a classic bar. Deep and narrow, with ornate room-length bar. However, there is plenty of room: Outside patio, semi-private mezannine, and a spacious pool hall. Food is remarkably consistent, considering cooks change often. But it's simple, basic fare: Pizza and nachos. Perfect for a snack when you'd rather stay and chat than go to dinner. read more
