I'm a bit torn on this one. I think it's a nice place with good food. Service is better than average (especially in Palm Springs). Drinks are excellent. The price point is a little high for what it is. I think you are paying a premium for location (right downtown), while I value ambiance and food more. I would return (more of a walk than a run, though). 3/5 for ambiance (in the back, by the kitchen) 3.5/5 on service 4/5 on food (5/5 for the bar) 3/5 on value We have never been to Johannes before, and we were looking forward to it. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, closer to the kitchen, which I don't think is nearly as nice as the front. It's not unpleasant, just not as nice. I was annoyed when the next table got their cocktail order in before us because they were seated after us. We got a different server, who took a while. The host had only provided a cocktail and wine list, so we weren't able to use that time to figure out dinner. Eventually the server came by. He knew his stuff, and went through everything we needed to know, but it was also clear that he was flat out. He asked if we wanted water, but then forgot and when we prompted him, one came with ice even though our guest requested no ice. Inital round of cocktails was on point, though no extra olives as requested by one. Not a huge deal. Drinks were excellent. Bread service and the beet salad were also quite good. I got the swordfish special. Swordfish is not my favorite fish, but the prep (pineapple black bean chutney) enticed me and it was very good. Another got the caper-lemon schnitzel. Another got the chicken curry. The curry was not as good as hoped; I think it was a little thin. No complaints on the schnitzel. Dessert and coffee were offered but we were full. read more

Haven't been back to Palm Springs for a couple of years and Johannes is on our must visit list. Somewhat disappointed this time. We are schnitzel lovers, I had the plain Wiener schnitzel($38) and hubs had the Papa schnitzel($44) I asked our waiter if schnitzel is made from pork or chicken and he said veal. First of all, my cutlet is 'snow white' throughout with no 'pink' anywhere let alone light pink showing in real veal. The texture is so soft with absolutely 'no chew' as veal should have. The whole schnitzel is flavourless and tasteless...taste just like pounded/tenderized chicken breast steak!Not any better with my hubs Papa schnitzel. Maybe next visit we'll skip the schnitzels and try their other items on the menu....... read more

Johannes is a restaurant that I will always go back to whenever I am in Palm Springs. We celebrated a Valentine's day dinner here. The cocktails were on point, the ambiance is bright, cheerful and relaxed, and above all, the service is always excellent. I do want to point out though that the reason I am giving Johannes 4-stars instead of 5 is that on this particular night the food was not quite up to the standard that I was accustomed to. My partner had the beef tenderloin. He had to send it back because it was medium well. He had asked for it to be medium. The server replaced it and it was perfect. I ordered the half-duck, which is how it was described on the menu. But, it turned out to be two thighs with the drumsticks attached, so not quite accurate. I was looking forward to a juicy duck breast. The duck skin was crispy but the meat was a little chewy and dry. The sauce definitely saved this dish. We ended the meal with the dessert sampler, it was perfect and made me quite happy. I will definitely be back. Though, it's a bit pricey, and I'll probably stick to the traditional favorites on the menu. A great people watching restaurant to check out if you're in downtown Palm Springs. While the menu has a heavy focus on European cuisine, the menu accommodates all palates. Food (4/5) The menu here leans towards European cuisine with some exceptions (ahi tuna tartare, Malaysian meatballs). In addition, this restaurant is more known for their schnitzel options; however, they do have more traditional American cuisine options such as the beef tenderloin with fries. My party ordered the beef tenderloin, pork medallions, and the dessert sampler for our meal (the portions are on the larger side so an appetizer isn't really necessary). The last time I ordered the beef tenderloin, the restaurant used a red wine reduction sauce that paired much better than the butter/cream based sauce that they smothered the steak with. I thought the butter based sauce was over powering and it should've been put in a small dipping sauce container on the side. The entree also came with sautéed spinach and roasted carrots which were cooked pretty well, but they were nothing special. I ordered my steak to come out medium and they did a decent job at getting that right but it was a little on the medium-well side. My friend's pork medallions were cooked excellently; however, the bacon they added on top was overly salty. The dessert sampler came with a peach strudel, orange creme brûlée, and a profiterole. The best of the three was the profiterole because of the rich chocolate sauce that they used to cover the pastry. Ambiance (4/5) This is a centralized location in downtown Palm Springs and located right on the corner of Arenas and Indian Canyon. The interior is unique because it seems like the restaurant combined two storefronts into one space. On the left side of the restaurant there is the bar and open kitchen with some tables, while the right side of the restaurant has a very small main dining room with a few tables. The green theme throughout the restaurant embodies the color way that is unique to Palm Springs. Sitting near the windows of the main dining room will provide you the opportunity to people watch the people walking by along Indian Canyon. My only complaint during my visit here was that the temperature inside the restaurant became very warm once more diners were seated inside and it was a little uncomfortable. Service (5/5) The staff at this restaurant are very accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu and the daily specials. My water was refilled a few times and I did not have to wait long for the check to arrive after finishing my meal. My friend and I had such high expectations her for their weinerschnitzel and she thought they had stuffed cabbage, but they didn't. The schnitzel was dry as could be and I had to keep asking the busboy for more lemons, our server was never around when we needed something. I love weiner schnitzel it's my favorite dish, I'm even Austrian, but this didn't come close to cutting it! I later found out if the server had been more attentive, she would have suggested some of the other weiner schnitzel dishes on the lower part of the menu with a lemon sauce and capers I missed. I wished I had seen the various sauce choices, I might have enjoyed my dinner so much more. There were servers in the entrance dining room who were attractive, dressed well with smiles on their faces, not ours! The roasted duck my friend had was good, but the worst red cabbage we ever tasted with huge chucks of cabbage. We both agreed, It was pretty lousy. When we asked the server about it, she answered with a very snotty response. Our server was a different story, she was enough to lose your appetite, and never around when we needed lemons, salt, more water, had questions about the red cabbage and was curt, we just wanted to get out of there. The drinks my friend had were excellent, their Orange Blood Martinis. When we first walked in my friend asked her if they had stuffed cabbage, she said was looking forward to that and thought she saw it on the menu? This old hippie looking server said, "You must be thinking of Miro's, they have it, we don't." That when we realized we went to the wrong restaurant! Johannes has the trendy Palm Springs atmosphere one would expect when visiting the downtown area. We were seated near the kitchen, not in the dining room, and that may have skewed my review a bit. I felt that the service was on point, the food was okay, but it was very noisy where we were seated. All in all, I felt it was overpriced. I had the caper lemon schnitzel which was fair, but because of the price point, it wasn't wonderful. There is no way it should be a $44 dinner plate. Our first time here. The place was well decorated with all the right touches. It was a small place but felt big because of character and ambience. The waitress was not nice and ignored us to the point even the bus boy noticed and started to help by asking her to go to the table. My friend was very excited to go to Johannes, as he's German and was in the mood for schnitzel. He raved about the cocktails, and in fairness, they were an A+ for both of us. The mezcal-based cocktail I had (I forget the name) was one of the best I've had in years, truly. My friend's Sazerac was to his liking, as well. No notes. The bartender brought his A-game. I was about to order the salmon when the server pivoted me to the daily special, another fish dish, instead. Sure, why not? My friend ordered a few appetizers and the schnitzel he was super-excited for. The bread basket came out with some unique butter for the bread that wasn't very buttery, a bit too vegetal. It lacked creaminess and flavor. I passed on the bread. The Baby Belgian Endive Salad was pretty good. My friend was excited about the Cheese Spätzeln, which I thought was fairly good as well. Our entrees came out, and my friend saw the Crispy Roasted Maple Leaf Farm Half Duck plated instead of the Schnitzel he ordered; an honest misunderstanding, but not what he wanted. Rather than send it back - he hates being that guy - he ate it, somewhat begrudgingly, repeatedly saying we came here because he was so in the mood for the schnitzel. My fish, I think it was halibut, was somehow chewy on the outside, but undercooked inside; not flaky at all, inexplicably overcooked then undercooked at the same time. It was pretty bland. Definitely a mixed experience for the $250 price tag, for a dinner for two. Fantastic cocktails, good appetizers, but a swing an a miss on both entrees. We had such a wonderful experience at Johannes for dinner last night. We were celebrating our anniversary and valentines weekend in Palm Springs. This restaurant is in the main area of town and we were able to walk over from our hotel which was great. We arrived an hour or so early expecting to have to wait at the bar while our table became available, but we were seated right away outside under the heaters and were very comfortable. Our server was wonderful and attentive without interrupting us constantly. We had the shrimp cocktail to start which was different to what we are used to, but so good. The shrimp was tossed in their special sauce so no dipping on cocktail sauce. Very clean tasting and delicious. Then we had a mixed green salad that was so fresh and crispy. My husband and I both chose schnitzel for dinner (one with a peppercorn sauce and one Jager style). So delicious. If you have ever been to Germany or Austria the schnitzel is something you remember and this place just took me back there. So yummy. We also were able to sub out our fingerling potato side with spaetzel which was exactly what we were craving. Dessert for us was the apple strudel of course and it was also perfect. This has been a mainstay of Palm Springs dining for years, and a place you could reliably take out of town guests to. Its warm, refined atmosphere, along with its famous schnitzel dishes and daily specials made it a sure bet. However, after a recent experience it appears to have fallen on hard times. The service, even in the off season, was abysmally poor. It was slow and with forgotten dishes. The food was bland and poorly plated. It was mediocre at best. We were embarrassed as we had raved about it to our guest. To top it off the prices were ridiculous. For two persons after tip without wine or desert it came to $215. As a local we will drop it off our list in the future. There are much better food experiences now in Palm Springs. read more

We came all the way in from Rancho Mirage ... sort of a standing joke because as we get older a 20 minutes car ride is excessive lol. The restaurant was very nice inside. the decor was urban chic and when you walked in they have a small 4 seat bar and a large room off to the right side. they also have a nice patio for outdoor dinning. The place was busy and we say right away. cocktails we had the blood orange cocktail and a German beer. We made a reservation about two weeks in advance and were seated outside at a plastic table in 57° weather with no heaters, despite there being only one other table occupied on the patio. We politely asked if we could move inside but were told the restaurant was full and no alternatives were offered. Unfortunately, the outdoor seating was uncomfortable enough that we decided to leave rather than stay for dinner. I understand restaurants get busy, but when guests reserve well ahead of time, a comfortable seating experience should be part of the expectation -- or at least some effort to accommodate when conditions aren't ideal. read more

The atmosphere and service was above & beyond, and the food top-notch, delicious & delectable. We just love Joanna's. The menu is very diverse with what you can have for breakfast and if they don't have it on the menu if they have the right ingredients so just make what you want you just have to ask tip. I don't ask how much they're gonna charge me when they do something special for me, but I am a regular. I just expect them to be fair and I always have felt that they happen. They are a regular go to for us. We love the huevos, rancheros, corned-beef hash, extra crispy, and chicken fried steak during the week. We just get the small breakfast which is two eggs and we get sides of fruit. You can also have English muffin or toast with that small breakfast if you want to. read more

The service was good, but in the very small dining room they sat a party of 8 next to us. They were so loud we couldn't have a conversation. Then my friends call and make separate reservations upon my recommendation. But then S N I P P Y Stephanie entered my experience ....ruining my evening. Working with her on reservations for just two people for the following week, The hostess Stephanie. (The brunette) upon finalizing the date and times we both agreed upon, she said she wanted and required a credit card number to hold the reservations, for two people, to have dinner the upcoming following Friday. I was shocked, and I said "I've not hear of that. It's only for two people." She became belligerent, as she was insistent to have my credit card number to hold reservations for two and I repeated myself then said "I can eat anywhere in Palm Springs ...that's unheard of. I'm choosing to dine here." Her reply "That's just how it is and how we do things and you'll have to get over it." She did not know I had already called 4 friends ( usually six) while having dinner, saying how great the food was and to have them join as a separate table the following weekend ( of course I had them cancel) Stephanie needs to learn diplomacy, etiquette, and professional professionalism. Food is okay and service was decent but for some reason they always sat us in the alley of tables by the kitchen and bathrooms. We have been there six times and even when there were open tables in the main dining area, we get stuck in the "cheap seats." When we mentioned it, the host laughed at us and didn't seem to care. Beautiful restaurant, plenty of seating. Service is wonderful, very efficient and welcoming. I highly recommend trying the spaetzle with cheese, our favorite dish here. The schnitzel was not the best, I do make those better at home. Prices are a bit high, but considering the area and the quality of the food served it was worthy of the splurge. Modern American-Austrian cuisine in for a Mid Century Modern city. Johannes is expensive with modern inflation prices, but it is probably the very best at what it does. Service is friendly, interior is clean, modern, a bit retro, with good sound proofing so you can still have a conversation with your dining mates without shouting, despite the crowd. Service is smiling and personable. Johannes is famous for it Wiener Schnitzel dishes, one of my favorites! And Johannes does it good, real good! But you are gonna pay for it: $44 at plate! I got the special Green Madagascan Peppercorn Sauce(Au Poivre ?) which was flavorful, mellow spicy, and added pizazz to this traditional dish. The wife chose more wisely with the Lemon Caper sauce...it was rich, fragrant, buttery, and delicious...better than mine! My one critique about the schnitzels is that the outer breading wasn't crispy to my liking(Note: I've eaten schinitzel in America, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria...they all do it crispier). $19 Cheese Spätzeln...this was a mistake, I ordered the $7 Spätzeln, but it was hearty and delicious mistake! Sautéed House Made Noodles Melted In Gruyere & Fontina Cheese, Wild Arugula, Crispy Onions, Chives. This appetizer is huge and great for sharing. It was so good, that I did not even complain to the waitress that she got this wrong. If you love a creative mac n cheese, you'll love this!
