It's tucked in beside a Dollar Tree store, but don't let that deter you from its great food, excellent service, fun mood and ginormous desserts. Anyway, the service was great, the drink pours were generous, the patio was inviting and packed on a Sunday night , the menu was unique with classic dishes , and it was reasonable considering soup and salad was included in the price. Defiantly worth trying. The soup , salad, and veal liver and onions were fantastic. The duck and the pork chops were good but a little on the dry side. As always, the ambiance on the patio is wonderful and the food was delicious. Unfortunately, this was ruined by very poor customer service by both the host and the server. My wife and I invited two other couples for dinner to reciprocate for dinners they had hosted. We got to the really and told the host I wanted to pay. He suggested giving him my credit card in advance, which I did. My wife and I were seated before our guests arrived. I asked the server if the host had given him my credit card. He said not yet, so I explained that we were hosting and wanted to avoid any conflict regarding the check. He said he understood and would grab my card. Our guests arrived and were seated. The server came to the table and the first words out of his mouth were " One check or separate checks?" This created the tense conversation I was hoping to avoid with my guests. After dinner, the server asked if we wanted dessert. We said no, but as soon as he walked away we agreed that the Coconut Cake should be shared by the six of us. The server brought me the bill and I told him we wanted dessert. He left and came back to inform us it was too late to change our mind because the table was already promised to another group. Now I'm embarrassed for the second time. I regret not making a scene and insisting that we be served dessert, but I didn't want to create more tension for my guests. I have now called three times to speak to a manager and there was never one present when I called. This is unacceptable customer service. All of the diners at adjacent tables had been there longer than us. It was unconscionable to literally kick us out. It almost ruined an otherwise lovely evening. I have spoken to all of our guests and none of us can believe what happened. Totally inexcusable! read more

There were 4 of us for dinner. We had the sole, pork chops and rack of lamb. The sole was a huge piece and tasty, served with a mango butter that was sweet, didn't really need it as the fish was very favorable. The vegetables were uninspiring, half a sweet potato in the skin and green beans with no seasoning. Not bad, but not delicious. Pork and lamb were good. Busboy took our desert order and it wasn't correct with one of us not getting any desert. The service and atmosphere was very nice. We will probably try again because the patio was lovely. read more

No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a visit to John Henry's, but make a reservation in advance, particularly in winter. We went last Thursday, and it was packed. Seems as if they add more tables outside seasonally, so it wasn't exactly intimate, but excellent service as usual helped make it a wonderful experience as usual. Favorites are: lamb chops, roast duck, osso bucco, chop/chop salad. The escargot is served in a ceramic container, not an edible container as you may have assumed from the photos. The sides are basic but tasty. It's an older crowd, and the atmosphere is pleasant and mellow rather than cool and hip, with an aged, 1960s/70s charm, but fun. The vibe and service are terrific, and the food very good. read more

We arrived late (for us) at a bit after 8. We were welcomed in. Lovely little outdoor quiet spot, just what we were looking for! Service was prompt and on point. Our server checked on us throughout the meal to ensure we were happy. We both had the veal's liver which was perfectly prepared. Our meal ended with a luscious crème brûlée and coffee, both of which provided a perfect end to our dinner. I didn't really get it, but it makes sense now why every time we would ask someone about John Henry's it was either love it or hate it. The servers are great, polite and pleasant. They let us pick the table we wanted. The menu is odd and I can't tell what they're trying to be. Escargot to Potstickers for appetizers and Beef Stroganoff to Curry Chicken for entrees. 7 salads but only one soup of the day. The moment I saw the bread and butter come out with the butter in little individual packets I knew what I was in for. For $35.95 beef stroganoff, I should get a little more inspired butter. $41.95 for pesto penne with chicken? Are you kidding me??? For pasta, sauce and some bites of chicken. The dishes are plated very 80's with your entree and a couple vegetables. The carrots were overcooked and mushy. The iceberg salad was uninspired and drenched in vinaigrette to the point it saw it sloshing off plates as servers delivered them. The salad also arrived at our table within 60 seconds of ordering it, which was odd. Faster than Jack in the Box. All the food was just OK. The place is definitely for the over 70 crowd. The patio is lovely, dining under the tree but the inside is just weird. Thank goodness I asked for outside. A tiny little dining room where you have to walk past the walk-in cooler and kitchen window to get to the bathroom. All the diners were happy and seemed to be having a good time, so don't let this deter you from trying it and forming your own opinion. read more

I have family members who live in the area. This is absolutely one of their favorite restaurants. So, when I visited them a week or so ago, I was pleasantly surprised that this was going to be our dinner spot. We were seated outside in the slightly warm, balmy Palm Springs air. Our server, Sheryl was kind, attentive, funny, and very accurate with our orders. My cousin and I ordered the soup of the day and chicken Parmesan. It was sooo good! It came with these marvelously sweet, tender carrots and with green beans. I also enjoyed my Long Island. My friend ordered fettuccine and cousin's spouse ordered the apricot chicken. Best restaurant ever. Our family has been coming here for 20+ years. Owners Luis and Alfredo are so sweet. The staff are so friendly and accommodating , especially Julie. The food is amazing. Away from the bustling Palm Canyon scene in an unassuming location near a strip mall with a 99¢ store. However, looks can be deceiving because stepping into their private patio feels like old Hollywood charm with beautiful landscaping and attentive service. The food too is both delicious and hearty! Escargot: Our friends described this as escargot for people who don't normally like escargot, because it doesn't taste as "fishy". As an avid escargot fan, I was a bit concerned that this may be watered down. However, even I was quite pleased. The mushroom adds an extra dose of umami and a firm mouthfeel to the chewy snail. And I noticed the garlic butter was really buttery with little baked clove pieces underneath. And the generous breadcrumbs on top add a nice toasted taste and crunchy texture. All makes for a great post-snail sopping of the leftover drippings with the table bread. Asparagus Soup: Very light and refreshing, perfect for desert night. There were some potatoes in here, but they weren't too heavy since they were cut in the tiniest of cubes. Pork Chops: Massive! Two thick pork chops lightly breaded with a really creamy white country gravy. They weren't quite sous vide tender, but they also weren't rubbery. They hit a nice meaty firmness. The side of mashed potatoes were super buttery. I also liked the carrot preparation since they were like small chipped pieces that were very very soft. Rack of Lamb: A classic rack of lamb, but with a nice mustardy breadcrumb crust. That's a great way to solve the issue where medium-rare lamb chops (my preference) can also achieve a firm exterior. Usually very hard to get right if not breaded. The mint jelly felt so retro, but still worked well. Same yummy mashed potato and chipped carrots side. read more

Having patronized this Palm Springs gem for many years, John Henry's has been a go-to place for entertaining friends and clients. The ambiance remains as does the service but the food has gone sharply down hill. Two of our party of three ordered Shrimp Cocktails as appetizers. The stench from the pawns was sickening. I'm surprised the server didn't gag carrying them to our table. Totally unacceptable! I ordered pork loin as my entree. To say it was bland is an understatement. No flavor whatsoever. So, there is no excuse for spoiled shrimp or flavorless meat. I'm out. read more

If it weren't for the super sized cocktail and the friendliness and efficiency of the staff, I would only give J-H one star, because the food is , at best, ordinary and kind of mediocre. It is very popular because most of its patrons remember when the restaurant was a huge bargain for the price paid. Now the menu prices have caught up and in some cases, surpassed the prices charged at much better restaurants. I really respect the management of the restaurant and their total commitment to running a first class establishment. Extremely rude owner belittled a mature educated guest at a table of four adults, when requesting an explanation of the check. The owner said: "Do you eat at restaurants?" Everyone at our table was shocked, and when I responded, telling him he was rude, he spun around and walked off. This guy should not be in the "front of the house" with his personality which is insulting, disrespectful, and argumentative. Be sure to check your check! In scrolling through earlier yelp reviews, I noticed another patron saying pretty much the same thing about the way they were treated at this restaurant. There is never any excuse to be rude to a customer. We have dined here since 2003... 20 years, but never again will any of the four of us return to this rudely managed establishment. John Henry is a local-feeling place with a great atmosphere. The average age of the patrons is... up there. But, that adds to the ambiance. You want to sit outside by the cute trees with twinkle lights. Very Palm Springs. Their food is ok...they have too many options to choose from which I think prevents them from executing some of them as well as they could versus if they pared the menu down and focused on their hits (the macademia crusted sole and pork chops are excellent). Many of the dishes look like bulk banquet food that you'd get at a mediocre wedding (uninspired plating with sides such as carrots and green beans). But! I love going here because the ambiance and martinis are wonderful and I just always get one of their known dishes so as not to be disappointed. Warning: The martinis are HUGE and STIFF. Fabulous!! Our first time here and we were so lucky because they will be closing for the summer. Wed evening, no resv, no wait, immediate seating even though it definitely wasn't a slow night. Lovely patio dining, and fun artwork (I think most or all pieces were by John Henry. I think!) Chop-Chop Salad, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, side salads, Beef Stroganoff, and Macadamia Nut-Encrusted Sole were all perfect and happily devoured. The desserts!!! Never have we ever enjoyed desserts like these. Coconut Cake w/Pineapple Ice Cream and Warm Cherry Pie w/Vanilla Ice Cream. Omg overly generous servings and unmatched in taste and quality. We look forward to going to this restaurant every time we visit Palm Desert. This time , though, we were disappointed! The lamb was scorched and over well done. The chop chop salad was drenched with dressing and soggy. We were with another couple and we said each couple would pay their own check. We were shocked that sn extra $1 was charged to each couple for "splitting a check !" We did not split anything .. we just asked for separate checks ! We've never heard of this practice!!! She said, "I was waiting on tables outside!" This should not happen at a restaurant like this. I'm disappointed. I have heard that the food and service are normally amazing but not tonight. We were ignored and not well served. We are regulars to this restaurant and had always been awed by the service. We waited fifteen minutes to be waited for our 6 pm reservation and waited thirty minutes to tell the waitress our dessert order, which was eventually told to the busboy. I have to say this was the worst food I have eaten in PS, the carrots looked like they came out of a can and the asparagus was soggy. The prawns were OK but my friend lamb was disgusting!! There is much camaraderie. People talk to one another. The patio is part romantic, part jovial and the space heaters keep you warm in the cooler months. Went here with friends. It is a bit off the beaten track. A real family restaurant in an old bank. They have both in- and out-door seating. We were seated inside and had a great view of the backyard, which was buzzing. We had escargot, caesar salad, and beet salads to start things off. They have a great selection of pastas and entrees. We had a mixture of pasta (ravioli), salmon, chicken and veal. The service was quick and great. The food was fantastic. Italian family food at its best. Very nice and at a great price.
