I have a very complex radiant heating system that had multiple issues, I was impressed with Owens services from the moment I placed my first call for service on Saturday morning with the office, within 10 minuets John Owens called me back and asked me questions about my system, he was familiar with the equipment and he reassured me that he was capable of resolving my situation, John arrived about an hour later, in short order he diagnosed the problem as the control unit (System Computor) and a defective aqua stat. The control was fifteen years old and a direct replacement was unavailable. John found a new controller that would work for my system, traced all the various components hooked up the new controller, tested and made sure that every heating zone worked (Nine zones) and our hot water heater was working correctly. We recently had a water heater that gave out and needed replacement. After getting one or two bids that were poorly broken down I was referred to John Owen Services by a friend. We live in a well maintained craftsman in Mill Valley and we are meticulous about doing things right. The appraiser who came to our home did a good job reviewing our situation and gave me three different solutions from tank water heaters to an on demand solution describing pros and drawbacks of each. An appointment was made and the next day Temo the technician came to install Temo was on time and detailed. He called and made sure I was kept abreast of progress and new hot water heater installed. Because of having such a good experience I decided to book an appointment to have our furnaces looked at with winter ahead. The following day they were inspected and serviced by a different technician. Over the weekend I had an issue with a fan that did not reset on our furnace. Because of having Temo's cell I called. He immediately took an interest in helping me out even though he was not the one in charge of furnaces in the first place. We trouble shot on the phone and realized someone would need to come Monday. I knew I had a bit of an unusual water heater problem in an old old house I use for my office, so when I talked to John Owens Services folks on the phone, I had some trepidations. The two or three different dispatch people who answered the phone were calm and pretty knowledgeable. When they didn't know, they would confer with someone in their office and get an answer. Their computerized dispatch system sent a text to me 10 minutes before his arrival, and had a picture of the technician, which I thought was a reassuring and friendly touch. Thus when technician Randy arrived, I knew him on sight. I was amazed at how this small detail got the interaction off to a good start. I knew beforehand that the part needed would likely be a special order with an unknown delay. Randy said he could try a workaround that might work if I was willing. He was very clear about costs, gave a quote and answered a couple questions I had. The workaround worked, and the house was immediately back in business with hot water! It cost exactly what he said, and he was done ahead of time. Well done, Randy ! You are a valuable asset to your company. Response was curt to the point of being rude - couldn't take the extra 5 seconds on the phone to say 'sorry, not interested in jobs like that'. I have used JOS in the past for an on demand water heater which I am very satisfied with. When my heating system in my addition failed I called JOS, They sent out a service person as soon as an appointment was available. Randy was very knowledgeable and suggested I consider replacing my system rather repair because it was already 25 years old...the repair was slightly less than half the cost of a new system so I decided to replace it. The soonest I could get it done was one week out, disappointing but understandable. The installation was scheduled for the next Friday and they arrived at the time that was scheduled. The installers were very good and installed the system in about 6 hours.....though it was a messy job the left the addition clean and tidy. ...before they left they showed me how to operate the new thermostat and checked that the heater worked properly. When I went to operate the system the next day, Saturday, it did not work. Only cold air came from the registers and I could not control the fan or anything from the thermostat, I had to manually turn of the system just to stop the fan from blowing cold air into the room. I then called JOS to let them know the new system did not work...unfortunately their recording said they were closed until Monday and I should leave a message and they would get back to me...I also sent them an email describing the problem. Though I hoped they might respond to my message I did not hear from them until Monday. It is understandable that we all need our weekends off not to be disturbed by customers. I do believe they should have had an emergency number possibly screened by a third party to ascertain the seriousness of the problem. For me it was just inconvenient not to have heat for a few days but if you had a gas leak or something that needed immediate attention it could be dangerous....with all that said when it did get fixed on Monday all systems are go. So, I would have given 5 stars except for the fact that they were hard to contact when it could have been an emergency. I would recommend JOS, and I have. read more
