I remodel houses for a living and use John Owens services for just about everything . They are always professional and on point and offer excellent service. They put in a new low profile radiant heating system for me on this project, two bathrooms, and a 32 foot Panoramic Door wall system, involving 30 foot headers and engineering, which is gorgeous. They've done carpentry, all excellent, rough in and finish plumbing, all excellent and handle all my rough in and finish electrical, also excellent. If there is an issue, they work hard to resolve it. John has extensive knowledge of current code requirements, so you can be sure that whatever they are doing is to code. We pass every single inspection. That was not always the case prior to using John Owens. My last project was riddled with problems from an incompetent GC, and John Owens Services saved the day by promptly fixing ever error we had. Matt, the estimator was right on time and provide an estimate that later was determined to be the best priced. They were the only company who would do the install within two days as Ongaro was a week out on just an appointment. What a wonderful surprise to find that John Owens , the creator and architect of our radiant system 17 years ago- is still in business. Our system is a complex 5-zone radiant heat system which has only been served once in the past 17 years. When we noticed our gas bill suddenly spiking Randy" came in as technician and performed all the needed service, repairs as well as a few upgrades with excellent workmanship , humor and reliability . I appreciated being notified of each cost at the moment it arose, allowing me to work within my financial budget! I had a leak in my water heater. It was only 3 years old, but the prior owner had not registered the water heater, so I thought I was out of luck with a warranty. Then John Owens said CA has a rule where warranties are honored, even if the water heater was not registered. Chris, the excellent technician, called the manufacturer and they confirmed they would give me a new water heater! Chris arranged everything for me. He took my old water heater to Home Depot, traded it in for the new one, brought it back and installed it. On top of that, I had copper piping issues and he fixed them too. Chris did an superb job! I also like how accessible John Owens himself is to his staff. Chris was able to reach John to get his opinion on a couple of items, and each time, John immediately took his call and responded to him. An overall great customer experience! read more

Had need of John Owens Services once again. Needed some old redwood steps replaced in front of our house. Alex who specializes in wood and construction was over on a Wednesday to review and offer possible alternatives and gave me a detailed quote on the spot. On Friday, a mere 2 days later, Alex performed the work and made a job I viewed as difficult-- appear easy! About a week after this project was completed I found a side door to the garage had a bad winter with all the rain. The door is metal with insulation and a wood frame holding it together; a replacement door was the obvious choice, but we could not locate one that was similar. Alex suggested removing the water damaged wood and rebuilding it! This was accomplished later the same morning and after remounting the door, the hinges were adjusted and the door swings better than when it was new! Neighbors have walked by and noticed the Yellow Rig John Owens uses and they have seen the work first-hand and have asked Alex for business cards for future work! read more

Just had a wonderful experience with this company. I woke up last Wednesday to no hot water and no heat due to a broken Buderus boiler. With a family of 5, this was an urgent problem. John Owens was very responsive on email and phone and had a technician on site the next morning. They had to order the part from the east coast but got it delivered and installed the very next day, restoring our hot water and heat which was a huge relief. Their communication was excellent through the process - they use an app to manage all their communication so everything is electronic and you get a text when the tech is on the way. I just received a very threatening letter from John Owens attorney demanding I remove my first review from Yelp. As I previously said, his workmanship was satisfactory, but I got pissed off when I discovered I had paid him almost twice as much to change a water heater than other plumbers would have charged. I know he's free to charge any amount he wants. I guess I'm really mad at myself for not asking him how much he was going to charge before having him do the work. I felt that it was important as a Yelp contributor to share my experience and encourage people to get competing bids before hiring work to be done. I'm not looking for a fight with his attorney, so I'm changing him up to an A-OK four star rating, which is more reflective of his workmanship, but not his prices. read more

I tried to schedule a visit as my heater quit working and needed an appt ASAP. I was told the soonest they could come was in a couple days and I asked them to hold the appt. in case I could not find someone sooner and I would call them and let them know "IF" I got someone who could come sooner. They agreed to hold it and since my experience with service in general lately leaves a lot to be desired, I texted the gal who contacted me to confirm the appt. and I was told it was given away because someone tried confirming with me yesterday and got no response. I had no texts or VM's from them so that is pure BS. I went down and looked at the unit and noticed a sticker from a company who had serviced it before and called them. Got an appt today without the 67 dollar diagnostic service fees, etc. Good customer service has become a rarity these days, you chase them instead of companies doing their best to help potential clients. THE WORST SERVICE!!! I had them do nearly 2000 dollars worth of work and not only did my brand new disposal break after 2 weeks (for no reason!)...a brand new part of my water heater went missing and nobody knows where it went apparently?!! So after calling them back about fixing my BRAND NEW garbage disposal it took them almost a week to get someone there to tell me they have no clue what happened, it just broke for no apparent reason and it will be 7-10 business days for a new one to arrive..but they will come asap and fix it for free once it arrives. It's now been 3 weeks with no garbage disposal in my house (and 3 babies I'm cooking for, not fun). I finally receive the new one and I call to get them to reinstall and nobody calls me back the first day! The next day I'm told the earliest they can get someone there would be in 5 days! RIDICULOUS! This has been the worst service!! I remodeled my house and I know the turn times of contractors and these types of companies...this has been by far the worst!! On a side note, the receptionist was not friendly at all every time I spoke with her. I DO NOT SUGGEST USING THEM! read more

I was very disappointed at the lack of "go-to" attitude. I called this company because it was an authorized service provider for Rinnai. And, I thought as it was in Marin, it knew "the lay of the land". The first appointment was cancelled (by them) because it was raining very hard (which happens often in Marin in the Winter), and the owner was fearful of driving his 2T truck** up the hills of Mill Valley to get to my house. Strange, as trucks used by UPS, the garbage company, the recycle company, Golden State Lumber large flatbed trucks, Davey Tree trimming trucks with large chippers hitched behind, PGE repair trucks (with bucket rigs) and even a drilling rig have all been on this street, and all but the recycle trucks have been up my driveway, in addition to there being a large parking apron right off the street. So, we rescheduled for when it is not raining (today), and he didn't show up; his office admin (his wife) claims he tried to call me several times (nope; I've got call waiting), and that he drove by several times trying to find a place to park his truck. Well, obviously I've moved on, and found another service provider who understands that if they are providing services to Marin County, they need to know how to drive here. And, my advice is that unless your service location is on flat land, with access of at least a wide 2 lane street, don't bother calling him. **By way of comparison, an Ford F250 weighs 3T, and they are used by service and repair people all the time on my street , so maybe this guy just needs to move to Iowa! read more
