The food here is pretty good. Tried several pastas, salads and a few different pizzas and all were impressive. The bread they supply with each delivery is amazing, can't get enough of it. I was introduced to this restaurant when I went for a long run, needed water, and had no money. The owner gave me a bottle of water and told me not to worry about it. I knew I owed him some business. Since then I've order salads and they are always very flavorful and fresh. I've also ordered Pizza and I love the flat authentic pizza style. Great food and really great people. I had the most disgusting meatball parm grinder. The meat was soft and mushy like dog food. I will never eat there again.

I like this place, but the last two take out meals were NTG...and thats not...too...good! The first was a lasagna that had the weight of a brick. Problem was that the top layer of pasta was about 3 layers stuck together. I had to dissect the lasagna to eat it. Second case was take-out spaghetti and meatballs. The spaghetti was severely over cooked, almost seemed like mush. Need it a little more ardent please. The meatballs tasted ok but they were packed pretty hard and tight. Anyway...I'd go back, but meantime hope they improve. read more

Stay away from john the Baker at all costs. I can appreciate that some prefer thin crust, but this is like no crust or paper-thin crust. It flops all over the place and won't even hold up the tiny amount of cheese or sauce they put on it. No wonder it took only five minutes to cook. What is worse is that they put the toppings on under the cheese. This hides the measly amount of toppings they put on (you can't see it and won't complain), but it also prevents the meat (pepperoni or sausage) from cooking properly. This is a wonderful family style Italian restaurant. Walking in I was greeted by David and Luis who made me feel right at home. Our waiters name was Willy who was very attentive and checked up on us multiple times and made sure we always had fresh bread on the table (which alone makes it worth going) This place made me the best chicken scarp I've ever had in my entire life. My wife had the penne ala vodka and was also very impressed. It was a little pricey but that's no problem when you get fresh great quality food. I truly believe this place has the potential to be one of the top 10 Italian restaurants in Stamford. They now deliver which is phenomenal however they can't seem to get the orders right. My wife and I are just looking for a good go to Italian spot for delivery a few times a month when we don't have time to cook and have leaned towards this place among a few others that will deliver decent pizza and pretty good dishes. The problem is 50 percent of the time the order is WRONG. We've called up not to complain but to inform and the manager explained that the next order will be discounted for not sending pasta with a chicken parm dinner on our next order. How frustrating when your starving, the order takes an hour and fifteen minutes, and they don't send pasta with the dinner and you have to pay for the full dinner!!! The next time we ordered we did not inform them and used the seamless online order website which in the year 2014 makes sense for all delivery spots to have this convenience. The order was taking over an hour so I called to find out where it was. Whoever I spoke to was nice but had an arrogance about him. He actually told me that we shouldn't order online and that's the reason why it's taking so long. Apparently because their systems are not efficiently put in place to accommodate the simple conveniences their customers have by ordering their food online is my fault, and I should work around what works for them....call in, get rushed by the person on the phone to order, and have them get the order wrong... this place has a typical feel of the next generation taking over and putting in the bare minimum to cash in on what the originals owners worked so hard for. Ordered $40 worth of food or 3 dinners Thursday night to be delivered. Delivery took about 45 minutes which I expected because I live in North Stamford. When the food arrived, I was shocked as it was ice cold and inedible since it of consisted of pizza, fried chicken, a hot chicken wedge and french fries. It was late so we had to go out to eat and pay again. I called John the Baker a Friday evening and the manager was completely unapologetic, telling me that if I had called him today instead of this evening he would have done something. I told him I had guests and could not call. It was just a ridiculous excuse for his lack of logistical competence. He did not ask for my name or how he could rectify the matter. This was not the response I expected when you as the customer are really helping the business in alerting them of their mistake!!!!! By the way, the birds ate the dinner Friday morning. I worked with them to come up with a family-style meal for an after-church foodie group. We're never sure how many people will show, but generally are able to confirm with the restaurant management on the Thursday prior to the Sunday event. I thought it might be 25-30 people. By Thursday 30 had confirmed. By Saturday that number jumped to 35. We ended up arriving with 37 people. The tables were set up when we showed up, and another 8 were easily accommodated (total 45). I had pre-selected 2 pastas, Penne ala Vodka plus Chicken and Broccoli Penne, and a salad (all family style). Not sure how they did, it, but they pulled it off without a hitch with just two waiters. Pasta was perfectly cooked and delicious, as was the salad (delicious obviously, not cooked). By the way, when I set this up, Antonio mentioned that no one would leave hungry. Nope! Gave this place a try since it's close by and I didn't feel like driving far since the snow was already falling down.. Long story short my boyfriend orders a chicken cutlet wedge with sweet peppers and green peppers, that's it! (no lettuce or tomato or mayo) We also ordered fries w salt and pepper on them and an order of onion rings. To sum this up, this was my worst experience at John the baker and I won't be coming back. They gave me a sandwich with condiments and vegetables on it, forgot the salt and pepper on the fries, and the onion rings were so bland and nasty.!! I even tipped them well at the take out counter! So frustrated I should have gone to get my $$ back for the sandwich since that's not what I ordered but I decided to just write a review. It hurts me to write this review but today was th final straw. I have been going to this place for years and have noticed that their slices have been getting more and more subpar lately. Anyway today I ordered a fettuccine Alfredo with chicken which was subpar at best with its wet soggy Alfredo sauce and pasta and chicken that was extremely chewy. All for the low low price of $18. The real kicker though was the fried calamari I took a picture of. It was $12 for literally 12 pieces of some of the saddest calamari I've ever seen. It was clearly old frozen and ridiculously chewy. One bite was an instant turnoff. Anyway I wish this place would get itself in order because it used to be great but it had just gone ridiculously downhill. When I called asking for a refund on the calamari they said I could have a free one next time. Unfortunately there definitely is not going to be a next time. read more

We order from John the Baker quite a bit at work. The food is usually quite good, the quality and way its prepared are great. My only complaint is the price. I ordered a pear salad yesterday and asked for chicken, it cost me $16. I was charged extra for chicken and it only had three slices of pears, a few pieces of mozzarella and two strips of roasted peppers. Nothing was said nor was it stated on the menu that lunch portions were not served on Sundays until the check came. The check was $6 higher than it should have been. Chose John the Baker because it is probably 2 miles from my house and had a Seamless delivery time of 30-45 minutes. Waited an hour, called, and was told to call back in 10 minutes. Called back more than 10 minutes later, waited while they took an in person order, and then was told they would call their driver. They called me back and said the driver took a delivery to the other side of town and would be there in 5-10 minutes. With two little kids, a pregnant woman, and guests, all hungry, I couldn't wait any longer in the hopes they would really show up when they said, since it was already 45-60 minutes past the original delivery time. Cancelled the order as they didn't seem to care at all. Very irritated. Better get my money back. read more
