Walking back in time ... The green milkshake machine sits along the back wall ... Vacant stools lined up along a counter where Heinz bottles are neatly nested with silver topped sugar canisters, ramikens overflowing with Smuckers and little mug shaped shakers of salt and pepper. Plastic encased white menu's with black graphics and a sketching of a woman ... I discover she is Marian (The current owner) not Johnnie. As the "classically" attired waitress with her hair appropriately in a bun took my order I just kept sensing a return to much better times. Families could choose the rush of the arched fast food next door where plastic rules but if they care about family then Johnnie's flatware, coffee mugs that are washed after each use, and a nostalgic breakfast of conversation should be the choice. My meal ... The special $4.50 prepared in real time. And, as my order reached the cook I smiled as I heard the sound of the stainless steel griddle being scraped. Fresh cup of "Joe" in a coffee mug of my younger days arrived and this was breakfast out. Looking around I see newspapers being read ... Yes print papers even though I am online but so cool to see. Chattering and friendliness. My meal arrives quickly ... Fresh and hot off the griddle with perfect bacon and pancakes that taste so good with butter melting down the small stacks sides (thick hot cakes that seem more like 3 than 2), and my egg was just right. Only complaint ... Had to ask for a coffee refill but all was good "everything alright?" Yes indeed ... A trip back in time ... A really good decision! My first impression of this place is.. It's filthy dirty in there the plus side is grill is very clean. Someone needs to do a serious cleaning at Johnny restaurant. Bathrooms are very dirty. The waitress was really nice. The male cook was eating n busy sucking on his fingers..I guess what he was eating was delicious! Best pancakes on planet earth! This is a solid old fashioned greasy spoon diner. Breakfast Solid offerings including pancakes that are amazing, don't order the three pancakes unless you don't want to eat until the next day. They have the usual diner breakfast foods which are great as well, eggs, breakfast meats, chipped beef, grits, big omelettes, home fries... Lunch Amazing soups - never had a bad one there, everything from chicken to turkey to chowders to bean soups. Different each day and always good. Chili is supposed to be amazing but never tried it. Great burgers they will actually cook to medium Always have some type of special that isn't on the menu And the coleslaw!!! I despise coleslaw but will eat a gallon here! It's unreal!!! We come here twice a month at a minimum. This Resturant normally receives a solid 4 stars!! However, today I ordered out of my norm..Shame on me!! I ordered Sarah omelette (eggs, fried onions, peppers, Italian sausage & American cheese) -- w/Egg Whites ‍new year Egg whites are always a risk due to cleanliness of the grill/stove/pan -- grill was not cleaned! The sausage in the omelette were extremely burnt!! No not a little well done, BURNT like I tasted the burnt!! Decided I was not going to eat this, the waitress asked if she could take the plate. I said yes!! I was not planning on complaining just wanted to pay the bill & leave.. never that easy.. waitresses if everything was ok, she was looking at me silly me thought I should tell the truth. I explained the sausage were extremely burnt... this resulted in her getting the plate out of the discarded bin, examining the food, calling over another waitress I could hear her saying 'she said the sausage are burnt' after a while one of them took the plate in the back behind the glass doors.. after a little while waitress came to table asked if they could get me anything else!! No thank you, I've eaten the English muffin & drank the tea... was my reply the waitress kind of 'huffed' walked back into the back room then came out and gave us the check. Feels like you are visiting friends or having family over when you are here. You can sit at the counter or a booth or table. Family owned, same friendly staff to greet you, low prices for great food. They have breakfast and lunch options. Nothing extravagant, just a good meal. Opened until 2pm daily. They just recently remodeled their booths, tables, counter, floors and wall decor. Looks great. Wow! Tried Johnnies on the recommend of retired Ventnor police sgt. He said it was the stop before and at lunch break from court. Well it was 'not bad' when we moved to ML 10 years ago. We went there for a quick breakfast. Its just average diner breakfast food, nothing special. My husband had two eggs home fries and rye toast. They forgot his toast and when they did bring it, it was barely toasted. I ordered one egg home fries and toast. The potatoes were par boiled a bit too long and not cooked on the grill enough. Does it have a sophisticated menu of hollandaise and crepes, no, but it has really good home favorites like pancakes, eggs, and creamed chipped beef. There lunch i bought two times and i can only give lunch 3 stars. I bought a cheesesteak and a chicken cheesesteak, they had a good taste.. but both had VERY little meat, But lots of lettuce, tomato, and onion. Don't understand how this place has a 4.5 star rating and the glowing reviews... it's your basic run of the mill diner to me. Came here for breakfast due to the reviews on here, upon entering we noticed how small it was with a couple of tables and booths. You seat yourself and the waitress comes up to you. Our table was sticky and has syrup rings on it. Service was good, waitress came up to us immediately and cleaned our table. Food was just basic, I got a mushroom omelette with home fries and a side of pork roll and my boyfriend got eggs fried hard with bacon and home fries. Nothing to rave about.. coffee tasted like hot water. They don't take cards, only cash but they have an ATM on site, which will charge you $2.75 to use it so come prepared! Waitresses are attentive but not the friendliest... must be hard to say you're welcome? Next time I'll consider cooking my own breakfast before coming here again. read more
