Had a early Xmas lunch with family. Service was slow dining room wasn't even half full. Food was OK. Fish fry was tops followed by crab cake sandwich but Reuben was a disappointment. Second visit and probably last. Not the most I've ever paid for lunch but not worth the money as far as service and food. read more

I live out of state and hear my parents rave about Johnny Manhattan's. I have gotten them a gift card for their birthday or their anniversary for the past few years. I call and they take my cc over the phone. This year I called a few times in the morning and again at 1pm. Each time I got the voicemail. I finally reached someone at 2:23pm my time. They tell me, sorry, call back tomorrow between 2-4 Wisconsin time. I couldn't believe they wouldn't make an exception for a gift card which would have been a $150 because I called 23 minutes past the time "permitted by their rules". I like nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. I knew Johnny Manhattan's would offer up plenty of schmoltz and retro supper club fare to create the time warp. It delivered, but it came up pretty short. They were very accommodating, though. Even though they do not normally take reservations on Friday nights, they did so for our group of 10. They also provided us with 3 servers. Which, instead of making order taking and delivering easier, it actually complicated things. Orders were not communicated from one server to the next, so often times they were asking about drinks and dinner selections when someone already did. But, it happens. They should work on tweaking the tag team for future oversized groups. I have a feeling it's not their first rodeo, so it should not take long to fine tune things. Some of the things they could fine tune is the fact that they were out of blue gill and perch, and then offered a shabby presentation of pan-seared walleye. It was more like pan-grease. The walleye was a decent size, but barely had a crust, was soaked in butter, and was cool to the touch. The potato pancakes were quite delicious, although they used far more batter than I like. I like mine to have some carrot and more crunch. I like crunchy textures: chicken tenders, chips, potato pancakes. That texture basically covers every food that has been properly deep or pan-fried. Take note, Johnny M. The only other item to address is ice cream drinks. Less than stellar performance from the bartenders. The grasshopper tasted like Scope and ice cream, and the Brandy Alexander (which we had NOT ordered--communication error again) was way too boozy. That may sound funny, but this was not boozy in a good way. Bryant's ALWAYS does boozy in a good way. Everyone else just needs to go for a tutorial on the classic cocktails with the crew at Bryant's, and they will have a winning ice cream drink. it all comes down to ratios. Too much of something is not always a good thing. Even though there were some less than amazing portions of the evening, or servers were splendid ladies and very attentive. We did not have empty glasses or have to wait long for our food. They were wonderful (Thanks, Tracy!). The appetizers were quite delicious too: cheese curds and calamari. I do have to note that the amount of bread was a bit silly...two loaves of Italian bread and two baskets of marble rye. Both were delicious, though. I made sure to at least sample them, but it was a little too carb-tastic. Also, the trays of three salads--vinegar slaw, creamy slaw, and tuna salad--was a bit much too, given that we had appetizers and bread. Maybe, that was either their version of a relish tray or it came as part of the fish fries, but it all seemed like unnecessary food items that nearly all went to waste. I truly hope it doesn't get recycled on to other tables???? At the end of the evening, when we received our bill (which cannot be split with parties over 4, nor can it be more than one credit card--please read this again), for the 10 of us, it only came to $440. We didn't think that was bad for what we ordered and the amount of food we received. read more

Unbelievable how good this place is. Best Old Fashion I ever had. The bread and herb butter could have been a meal by itself it was so good. My wife had the Fruityi De Mare which she said was incredible. I had the Cowboy bone in rib eye and the flavor was indescribable. The desserts were off the chain good. Had an impromptu lunch there today with a baseball team of 12 year olds. Took over an hour to get our food and was told that they were not able to split up checks by family. Not only a bad experience, but very rude people. This is my 2nd poor experience in as many visits. We tried making last-minute reservations, were told they were full. My wife asked (on the phone) if we could try when we arrived and the Maitre D' said "Sure, just can't guarantee when or if we could get you seated". We thought, fair enough, and we met another couple at the bar. Upon arrival he refused to take our name and flat-out lied that he never made such a statement. He was arrogant & rude and this is common for him. He even stated to me "I didn't lie to you, I wasn't talking to you" with a smirk. Spoke to GM who apologized but offered to do NOTHING. I asked the GM to have the owner call me to discuss this unfortunate mistreatment and she told me 'no' and that she would end up calling me. As an owner of my company, if one of my employees ever refused to take the name and ph number of an unsatisfied client who asked me to call them I would probably fire them. Was in the restaurant a few weeks earlier with a friend and ate at the bar. Poor service, had to ask for water 4x before getting it, soup and friend's salad either arrived with meal or after meal. Bartender never checked on our status and left our used dishes pile up for over 20mins while we sat there with no one else seated at the bar. This place is beautiful, but the service is not good. Very arrogant tone from employees and it is unfortunate. When seated in the dining room the servers there are great. I will give this place a rest for a LONG time. read more

After working the long flight from Amsterdam to Detroit last Saturday, I finally settled into my seat on the short flight back to Milwaukee. Paging through the latest issue of Milwaukee Magazine, I spotted a full page ad for Johnny Manhattans, featuring a photo of their outdoor patio. I'm usually tempted to get to bed way too early when I return home from trips like that, but I decided a nice dinner and a couple drinks would be the ideal way to wind down, and it was also a stunning summer late-Saturday afternoon Saturday. Rev up the motorcycle, and Patio - here I come! First impressions count, and when I checked in without a reservation at the hostess station, I found the place to be lovely. Curbside, it was totally nondescript, but inside it was all Wisconsin supper club. I opted however, for the outdoor patio, since It was the sort of day that makes enduring Wisconsin winters worthwhile, and they accommodated me at a tiny, but totally adequate bistro table along the perimeter. The young woman who seated me graciously offered to bring me a "more comfy" chair than the wrought iron, armless chair that was there. The woman at the adjacent table cluelessly refused to remove her purse from the chair next to my table, so the hostess had to hoist a heavy metal chair above her head, and over that next table to bring it to mine. I sort of felt like a schmuck as a big, strapping guy like me stood there in front of a packed house, letting a small framed woman do this for me. Anyway, nice touch. Worst dining experience I've ever had. The manager is a terrible and has no idea how to conduct herself in regard to customer satisfaction. Will never go back. Went to Johnny's last night with my fiancé and family. Our experience was outstanding. I am always fearful of ordering steak at restaurants. That will never be the case at Johnny Manhattans. I had the best Filet I've ever had at a restaurant. Other local steak joints should take notice(Bartalottas). Our waitstaff was excellent, delicious warm bread, and great drinks also. Nancy, the owner, and her daughter-in-law, Tammy could not have been more accomadating. We can't wait to go back. read more

very disappointed. Half of staff do not wear masks. Our waitress did not and she was not maintaining enough space. She hovered over our shoulders. Too close and we were very uncomfortable. She was training a waiter who wore a mask and he was so much more considerate as well as professional. The room is loud due to the high ceilings and wood. Our waitress and trainee stood at the station which was behind our table and the waitress chatted loudly about personal things. It was difficult for us to talk at our table. The trainee was considerate and we could not hear him. Other employees we assume were owners maybe would go to tables to greet regulars and they talked and laughed so loud I felt like I was in a beer hall! The food: haystack onion rings were basically inedible. Way over salted. My chicken risotto special had too much garlic and way too much butter. It was mushy. My moms salmon was ok--- stuffed with crab--- very little crab--- way too much butter. Spinach risotto was bland, mushy and not seasoned well. My brother was the winner. His fillet was delicious and he enjoyed. Overall it was an extremely disappointing dinner. Did I mention the fly? Oh, yes, we had a fly or 2 bothering us all through our dinner. When I asked if they could help get rid of it, a woman stopped by and asked "What would you like me to do about it?" We won't be back. read more

If I could do 3.5 stars I would. We've been here probably 10 times over the last few years. A number of times prior to the renovation, and a number of times since the renovation. The biggest issue is the service. They seem to have a few servers who have been there for years who are VERY VERY good and make your dining experience great. Unfortunately, they seem to have quite a bit of turnover with their servers and their training seems to be rushed and the servers seem to be thrown into to learn on the fly. Not exactly what you want at a place with dinners costing $18-50. As for the food, that too is usually very good. The spiedini is usually very good and has become a family favorite. A recent Friday night it was made differently, and was not as good as it usually is. The Saturday night prime rib was fantastic the one time we had it. We've never had the pizza, seems like a take out option for many. We recently had the Friday fish fry for the first time, they offer a combo of baked or deep fried. We really enjoyed the baked, very most and flavorful. The new renovation is beautiful, if you haven't been here since the renovation, you're in for quite a surprise. Many different dining areas, each one with its own unique style. A few less TVs would be nice, no reason you need a TV in each area, just at the bar would be nice. Overall this place is very nice, I just wish the service was more consistent. read more

More like 4 and a half stars. Just a couple quibbles. My wife and I were staying at a local inn about 3 miles away, and the proprietor recommended Johnny Manhattan's. We went on a Sunday night about 6:30 pm, and the place was packed! The dining area is very attractive and inviting. Our waiter Paul was pretty good, but he had a lot of tables to attend to that night. The food: first of all, the 5 cheese French Onion soup is outstanding. I was disappointed in the carpaccio appetizer, as the beef was not sliced thin enough, was cooked slightly (should be raw), and was not served with lemon, olive oil, or Parmesan. House salad and Caesar salad before dinner were both good. For entrees, I had the Prime Kansas City strip, medium rare, and my wife had the lasagna. Both were excellent. The portions were large and the garlic toast served with the lasagna was outstanding. We were stuffed after dinner, so no room for dessert. Even adding a couple glasses of wine to the total, the final bill was not that bad. Highly recommended. Make sure to call ahead for reservations, the place fills up fast. Quite a gem. read more

My first visit to Johnny Manhattan's was sublime. The parking lot was almost at fully capacity but luckily we found a perfect spot near the exit. The restaurant sign was astonishing and what surprised me most is that they had two real life reindeers along with the big man in the red suit Santa Claus as well. The interior of the building is phenomenal it's like being in a large mansion filled with rich people. The chairs were comfortable, the environment was organized and clean, their staff is very friendly and very knowledgable about the selections in the menu. As a huge seafood fan, I loved their lobster bisque and their crab cakes. The roasted chicken was decent but I would have liked the lobster tail more. They also have a fireplace, a wine cellar for wine tasters and a huge refrigerator filled with meat carcasses which was unexpected for me. I would definitely come back to this restaurant for any type of special occasion. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys delicious food at decent prices. read more

Had to wait 15-20 minutes for a drink. Waited 1 hour for a table only to wait another hour for food. Ran out of walleye and potatoe pancakes on a Friday night. I LOVE THIS PLACE! It is so cozy and inviting. I love that I can have a fantastic, high quality steak dinner without making a huge deal about getting ready and going out. I could wear a dress or I can wear flannel. I always get steak.. but one of these days I would really like to try their pizza, it looks delicious. I have been telling my husband that when our kids are done with school I want to move down to the 3rd Ward, since discovering this place, I have decided I just want to move out to Hubertus and eat here every night instead. We have always had great service, our waitress has always been incredibly knowledgeable.. how she memorizes the specials of the night just blows me away. To top it off on my daughter's 7th Birthday, our waitress gave us a tour of the restaurant to see ALL of the Christmas Decorations after dinner. (My daughter's is a Christmas baby, and OBSESSED with everything Christmas, which is how we decided to go here in the 1st place because I heard how beautiful the decorations were, They DID NOT Disappoint!). read more

Ate there just once years ago. Server stuck her fingernail in one of our drinks to fish out a fruit fly we pointed out to her. Then pushed it back to us and said "there ya go"! I assumed she was kidding and that she was going to come back with a new one and swap it out. Never did. Nor did she comp it. My husband said we will never again come here. But he refused to let me make an issue of it. We just got the check and left. Paid $120 for an average dinner and a fly laden (and fingernail germ laden) drink after this happened? He knew how angry I was and he didn't want the evening further ruined, so I promised not to say anything...but I won't hesitate to tell people the story. If a 50-60 year old dark blonde haired waitress with her hair up and really long nails comes to your table, run like the wind. Not sure if she just didn't care, was angry at her boss or was trying to get fired, but I'm still amazed and aghast each time I remember this night. And yes the story is 100% true. read more

What do you expect when you spend over $400 for a dinner for 4? Do you expect a hostess with an attitude? Do you expect your dinner to take 3-1/2 hours? Do you expect to be lied to? Do you expect to be ignored bu the bartenders for 15 or 20 minutes? When you ask to see the manager, do you expect that request to also be ignored? When you ask the bartender what brand of wine did he just serve me, do you expect the response to be "I don't know"? I just cannot believe how bad the service was. They're in way over their head. They cannot service the number of seats they have. If you plan on going anyway, go during a time that they aren't busy; stay away from Friday and Saturday nights, they cant handle it! read more

Just left Johnny Manhattan's I was hoping to leave a rave review after enjoying a wonderful steak dinner with my wife while celebrating our birthdays. (Same day, lucky us) Unfortunately, we never had that opportunity. I planned our evening by first making a reservation for 5:30 Feb 6th 2016. Upon arrival they were able to seat us immediately. They took us to you the furthest table for two right in front of the emergency exit. Ok, not what I expected (I'm looking to spend a considerable amount of money on a great meal) so I told the the host, I would rather wait for another table, his response was "all of the tables for two will be the same size" That's OK I'd rather wait for a table in the main dining area. "Ok, but it might be a while" Ok, we can wait... an hour and a half later, we decided we'd had seen enough people come and go from the bar and decided to call it a night. I get that this is a busy place, but come on, an hour and a half for someone that had a reservation. Fortunately I only live two miles away. This was not our first visit by any means, the service and food has always been a cut above. When we turned in our pager, we were given a half hearted I'm sorry, they we're probably happy that they had one less table to deal with. Being in the service industry makes me very aware of situations like this, and I make every effort to make sure my customers never leave feeling this way. I will not return, not that it matters, it's a busy place, and they won't go out of business on my account. I hope they can at least use this as a learning lesson... stay sharp, be in tune to the moment, if this is just a job to your employee's, you have the wrong people. As for our evening, we went home and enjoyed leftovers...All we really wanted was a special night together. FYI... I'm not a hater, first time I've ever done a restaurant review... My wife and I have been to J M's four times since the remodel. The food and service have always been at the very least good, and prices reasonable for a high end restaurant. We went there Friday May 24th for my wife's birthday. The steak and Spiedini were great. Waitress and bar tenders friendly and attentive also (the drinks were generously poured). On top of all that I had a large amount of cash fall from my pocket while sitting in one of the comfy leather chairs in the bar area. A member of the waitstaff found it and returned it to the host station. It was graciously returned to us. Can't beat that combination, good food, good service and really good people. We will be going there more often and bringing friends. read more

The food was not the best for the prices. Setting is not the best we had 6 of us stuck in the back room with a kids birthday party going on. My husband had to keep getting up and moving for their waitress to get through, not to mention it was terribly hot back there. We asked to be move to a better location and they did move us to the bar area where it was very noisy, we could hardly hear each other talk. Not my idea of a nice quite dinner out with friends. I use to go there before all the remodeling which I found the food was better and so was the atmosphere. I am now back at the 5 O clock club. read more
