OMG. I love this place! We were late on deciding what to do for New Years Eve and finally decided on this place and got a late reservation (9:30pm). I'm always a bit weary of late dinners, you may end up with okay food because of tired chef's and the last of the food in the kitchen, but this was not the case. We started at the bar because our table was not quite ready yet. We went to the bar to get drinks and were asked for our IDs by the bartender (not out of the ordinary since most of us are in our mid-twenties). But then when she looked at them, she was seriously checking for halloo grams and the insignia on the IDs...i guess they get a lot of fakes out in Hubertus? Everyone at our table ordered steaks. You know they're not messing around when the menu states that the chef is not responsible for how your steak turns out if it is ordered past a medium doneness. All steaks come with a salad, soup, and a choice of potato. Which makes their prices great since most steak houses these days are all a la carte, yet still charge you the same for a steak. I upgraded my salad to the BLT wedge. It was okay - the dressing was a bit watery. I got the asparagus soup, a creamy delight. The others at my table got the onion soup, upgraded it to the french onion, and it looked really good (and everyone enjoyed it). There was also bread served with the meal, warm sourdough (?). Also when we asked for butter, the waitress brought us out two pads of butter for the table...can you say awesome? I ordered large ribeye - ribeye being my favorite cut - medium rare. It came out perfect. And if I recall correctly, it was a 18oz steak. Perfectly seasoned, it had a nice char on the sides, the melted butter on top, and melt in your mouth meat. With a few mushrooms on the side. I ordered the garlic mashed potatoes that we so good. My only complaint is that there wasn't more of the mash. Everyone's steak came out as ordered (except my fiance, whose came out more like a medium rather than a medium rare - but still delicious he said). Our waitress was a bit strange, but was super friendly, even the first time we talked to her. Actually most of the staff was very friendly and acted as if we were all old friends and made jokes throughout the night - I loved it. The service was good and we were comfortable the whole time. We also ordered a melting cake - pretty standard stuff, chocolate cake, melty in the middle with some vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Also the waitress told us about their dessert drinks and we ordered a "pink squirrel". I couldn't tell you what was in it, but it was pretty good. Was so disappointed in the food. I ordered the fish & chips, it was so over cooked, had to take the batter off the fish just to eat it. What was more disappointing was the waitress dii not even ask how it was. Maybe it was obvious with all the batter taken off the fish. The scallops that someone else ordered were bad, they were recommended by the waitress. When the meal only comes with 4, and you only eat 1 and 1/2 of them, that should be an indication, again the waitress did not ask how they were. After the big (and beautiful) remodel it is disappointing on a new level to write this review as a local who has been coming here for many years. Waited a month for them to get going before coming and after almost 2 hours at our table with no food and weak service we walked out hungry at 9:25 pm. The owner was everywhere but nowhere to be found. She should have been to our table but instead sent her Manager with LAME excuses. They knew it was our 26th Anniversary and a new job celebration for our daughter. What we did receive was a snobby cold attitude from most employees and the owner,except Ann our bartender,she was great. The prices are way out of line on top of everything else. $32-$50 for a steak or prime?And small cuts as well? Be a verrrrry long time if we ever do go back. Went on a Friday night. Massive disappointment across the board considering this use to be one of my favorite spots. 1. Wait was an hour, which is fine if the bar service was decent (it wasn't) the bartenders didn't check in with us for over half of our wait. 2. When we did get seated wait service was sporadic. It was at least another 40 minutes until we received our food. 3. Over half the table was not at all happy with the fish and my lasagna was OK. I am usually not harsh on places for Friday night service but there is absolutely no excuse for the lack of customer service during these waits. I'll give them another try because of my bias for this place just not on a Friday night. With that being said please management improve on the customer service. Thank you. read more

We went to Johnny Manhattan's because the last time we were there all bartenders and bar servers were wearing masks. In addition, there was social distancing at the bar. Tonight, NONE of the barenders or bar servers or the hostess or several of the waitresses were wearing masks, because according to the hostess, they all have "underlying medical conditions." Also, there was NO social distancing at the bar. People stood shoulder to shoulder. They are not following the state mandate for masks or for social distancing. We will not be going back. I'm sure that the management at Johnny Manhattan's doesn't care about our service; we're not regulars. But, I'm encouraging you to find a place that will follow the state rules. read more

My wife and I were first time diners at Johnny Manhattan's for our 31st anniversary. I knew we were in for a treat the moment we were greeted as we walked in. Customer service is the culture here, from the bartender recommending drinks and dinner, and providing a sample of soup while we were deciding what to order, the service was fantastic. My party of 5 recently dinned out at Johnny Manhattan's and were very pleased with our experience. We grew up in the area having never been here, and watched Johnny Manhattan's remodel and expand, and finally got around to checking it out for ourselves. The addition they added on is gorgeous. The bar and fireplace area have so much character, it's a great dinning environment. We ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer and they did not disappoint! The portion sizes for the meals themselves were very generous. My dad ordered the pork chops which came with 2 of the largest pork chops any of us had ever seen. He preferred the broiled one to the breaded pork chop. My father-in-law got the lasagna, which was basically a pan of lasagna for himself. It was such a generous portion, but he really enjoyed it. My mom and I ordered steaks, her the NY strip and myself the petite fillet. The steaks were cooked as desired and had great flavor to them. My mother-in-law had some pasta dish that was tricky to pronounce, but she was over the moon with that as well! We also ordered a side of creamed corn to share around the table. It wasn't the best creamed corn I had, but it was still delicious nonetheless. Each dinner entree came with a salad and a potato, which was a nice touch in my opinion. Most other steakhouses will charge you extra for each, which between 5 people really adds up. Finally, we ended with the lemon cake split between us, and that was so delicious. It had some blueberry in it, and didn't feel too heavy after our generous meals. All in all, we had a great night. Our waitress was so kind, and even the little service bits that felt off were overlooked by all the positives. The only negative I have is that I ordered an amaretto sour and I do not know what they gave me, but it was nowhere near what an amaretto sour tastes like. We went there for my wife's birthday tonight and were very disappointed. The service was very slow, the food we ordered was not worth the prices that they are charging, and two people in our party received their side dishes almost 15 minutes after our meal was finished. This is the second time in a row these problems have happened and I will not return. There are several very good restaurants in the area and they will be getting our business. Simply Spectacular: mix of rustic Italian Steakhouse meets classy yet unique and modern, Wisconsin supper club. Food was superb. Service was very good. Had the veal and escargot. The veal tasted like a cross between the best and softest pot roast and prime rib combo you've ever had. Atmosphere is fantastic, open, well lit, clean & classy while retaining the authenticity of genuine, rural, Wisconsin hospitality. Great bar, finger food and variety let alone the killer stone oven pizza. A true gem in the middle of nowhere. It's our go to, now for special evenings out. read more

My wife had eaten here a few times about 10 years ago and, while it was good, we felt it wasn't worth the cost. We thought other restaurants in this price range were just better. But since they remodeled we've been told over and over again by other people that we HAVE to go back. So we did. The bar area is very, very cool. First drink was a little weak, second was fine. We sat by a window and it was snowing so it was very nice although we were basically looking out into someone's back yard. We both had steaks and we thought they were done to perfection. I ordered mushrooms because the menu didn't say the steak came with them so we ended up with more mushrooms than we could possibly eat, (and maybe the waiter should have mentioned that mushrooms came with the steak???). But since I love mushrooms it wasn't all bad. We took them home and used them in a meal at home. All in all we will probably go back again. read more

I really like this steakhouse. Anytime I am in the area I make sure to stop for dinner. Because I travel alone for work I usually have dinner alone at the bar. I come back home to visit three times a year and this is one of my "must" stops. The steaks, ribs and shrimp are amazing! If the have their crabby mushroom soup or crab chowder get it, it's amazing! Their fried shrimp is huge with a light and flaky batter. How they find shrimp this large and fresh in WI is beyond me. Try one of their steak or rib combo so you can get the best of both worlds. Very disappointing dinner Saturday night. This has always been one of my favorite restaurants. We joined another couple there to celebrate an occasion and left bewildered and annoyed. The waiter left much to be desired - lacking social poise, attentiveness and didn't wear a mask. He only provided one "specials" menu so we had to wait while each of us got our opportunity to look at it. The regular menu didn't have the steaks we were looking forward to nor the sides. Upon taking out appetizer order he asked if we wanted him to take our dinner order as well (assuming he'd time that accordingly). Nope! We weren't finished with the apps and the salads came followed quickly by our dinners. He asked if we wanted bread - which we did & didn't serve any. When we finally asked he brought 3 pieces for a party of 4. No butter. He was negligent in clearing dirty dishes & even commented about the table getting crowded. It never got any better. The quality of the food has declined. A $12 spinach/bacon dressing salad had about 12 pieces of spinach and one sliced egg. There was more dressing than salad. The rosemary potatoes were dry and over cooked. Baked potatoes, the size of a small woman's shoe, were not quite done & served with a small dollop of sour cream/1 pad of butter. Again we had to ask for an appropriate amount. Crab legs were dry as well and served without drawn butter or a fork - until asked. Steaks were mediocre. Tables were lacking in table cloths, placemats, salt, pepper, etc. We've been to other restaurants in the county and found those things present (so no COVID excuses). I felt like the I was at a local restaurant located in downtown Richfield and not one that warranted the $400 I spent. I am so sad to say it isn't worth returning. read more

Short version: over-rated and over-priced. Long version: I was looking forward to this place, after hearing raves from friends and reading so many excellent reviews on Yelp. I was not prepared for it to be as terrible as it was. It was hot in the dining room, even with several ceiling fans going. Not conducive to eating a big, hot meal. It was also so noisy we could barely hold a conversation. I got the ribeye, and opted to upgrade to the BLT wedge instead of house salad. I also ordered some of that mushroom crab soup everyone raves about. I decided to get the French fries with my entree after the waitress raved about them, and most of my dining companions picked them as well, for the same reason. The soup tasted just fine, but was made with those fake crab sticks, not actual crab. The iceberg wedge was short on bacon, featured those gross pink tomatoes (in June!), and the dressing was lacking in flavor. This was all poured over a wedge of lettuce that was turning brown at the edges. When the entrees arrived, my steak was flavorful but not particularly tender, and the fries were horrible. They were frozen, and managed to be both pale and undercooked yet completely dried out at the same time. No one ate them, and we all expressed amazement that the waitress had raved about them. The two people who ordered the filet said they were good, but we all agreed the food was over-priced for the quality. The food delivery was haphazard. People who got the iceberg wedges got their salads first, and then much later the house salads arrived. One of my dining companions got the wrong entree, and then had to wait for the correct one, so she got her food as the rest of us were finishing. We were headed elsewhere for birthday cake, but we all agreed we would have cut our losses and skipped dessert anyway. As we walked out, past what appeared to be the kitchen, we were treated to the sight of a trash can overflowing with garbage and food scraps. A fitting end to our visit, actually. read more

Sadly, we dined with at Johnny Manhattan last night and were very disapointed. Our entrees were rushed to our table when we had barely begun eating our salads. Our prime rib, though ordered "medium", arrived very "rare". After returning them to the kitchen, they came back still "rare". We had to ask for steak knives to be able to cut the beef. The scallops, ordered cooked through, arrived lightly seared and raw in the middle. A return to the kitchen did them no favor. We have always been delighted with our dining experiences on previous occasions, however, this was so very disapointing. My wife and I live close by, and go to Johnny's a few times every year, but . not been there on a Friday for a while. Holiday week, we decided to get there early - 4:14 pm Friday 12/28 for a 'blue hair special'. On the way we guessed how many cars would be in the parking lot-- I said 12, she said 8 -- we were car #4. We walked in to an empty place--5 people at the bar. The host asked if we had reservations, we said no, it's fish fry night -- he said no more fish fry for 8 months now. I mention this now as a point to remember. The host also mentioned they were booked solid for the evening, but we were able to get an immediate table. In fact after we ordered drinks, and then received our food, we were still he only people in the main dining room, and it was now 4:45, and there were maybe 6 people at the bar. On a normal Friday fish fry at Johnny's previously, the place would be crowded, with the bar filling up fast. As we were leaving about 5:10 pm, there were now 4 tables with people, and maybe 4 people at the bar. It was nicely unusual w/o the crowds, but we now know why--no fish fry for many months. Maybe it got busier later? We had the scallops and sea bass with salads and bread, very nicely done, with greatly improved service from the last few visits (we really like the décor, and Nancy has beautiful Christmas decorations). Meh...Family loves this place, but I have had better meals elsewhere. The ambiance is incredible and that's why I added a star, but food should rule. Unfortunately, it didn't. I ordered the petite filet dinner and was disappointed that I couldn't substitute potatoes for a vegetable. Sure, I could have ordered an additional side, but for the prices here, even a slight upcharge for a substiution isn't unreasonable. And, boy, when they say petite, they REALLY mean petite. I was shocked at how small it was. The steak was done as requested and tasted okay, but wasn't anything to rave about. My husband ordered the duck special but felt it was nothing special. I have to share I had 2 great experiences at this location. Now I have had 2 extremely disappointing visits. The last visit will be my last as well as the other 12 people that attended. We had requested a small private room that we had been in previously. We celebrated 2 birthdays on this visit and were seated in the middle of the rotunda. Two of the people are in their late 70's and surrounding noises can make conversation less than desirable. Drinks were delayed and one was forgotten completely. It arrived 30minutes later and 3x reminding the server. The appetizer ordered had to be asked for as it was not delivered. It was difficult to get any refills on the waters and had to beg to get another drink from the bar. The large filet that was ordered was overdone from Medium Rare to a nearly well done. Food allergies were addressed at the table and the kitchen was to be notified. The preparation was done incorrectly delaying the food, by the time it arrived everyone was done with their meals. The manager addressed the table with not an apology, but an excuse that this is how we normally prepare things as if we were in the wrong. We spent over $500 on this visit and I sent a message to the restaurant in writing to share my experience and there was not any kind of words back. When I sent them overwhelming compliments after the 1st visit, I got a thank you back. Never again will I dine at this establishment. read more

I have not gone inside be building and sat down to eat but my family always orders some pizza every now and then and when we do the staff at Johnny Manhattan's never seems to disappoint they make the best pizza ever with big sausages and savory pepperoni and the most delicious cheese on a large but amazing pizza and another great thing of the pizza is that the crust is baked to perfection and thin and crunchy. The only con to this great pizza is the price which is a little high for two large pizzas which can get over $60 but it's still an amazing pizza. read more

Renovations look great, like everyone else has said. But everything else falls short. The owner/manager lady was so rude to our entire group. Very rude and disrespectful, when yet our patronage is what keeps your doors open? In the restaurant business you literally DEPEND on your customers to come in and spend money there, so you have no right to treat them poorly. I totally agree with the guy about the TVs in there - it just ruins the whole ambiance. I also agree with the person who said the waitstaff wasn't on point with water refills, drinks, and coming back to even check if your food was ok or if you need anything. Our guy was absent. And when he was at our table refilling water (after we asked numerous times) he very rudely reached in between my brother and I. Where are your manners? Say excuse me, or ask us to pass you the glass, you do not just insert yourself in between us having a conversation. I was a waitress for many years, and I would never ever reach like that, AND he grabbed the top of the glass! That's server 101 - you never grab the glass at the top where people drink from. **I also agree with the person that said "If I'm going to spend that much on food, it better be good!" Their food is nowhere near worthy of the prices they are charging. And lastly, could this place have more rules?? No take-home boxes, no split checks, and on top of that, no they won't run it on more than one credit card or if one person pitches in cash and you want the rest on a card - they won't do it. Apparently it's "against their policy." As I said earlier - in the restaurant business, that money is what keeps your doors open. So it shouldn't matter HOW we are giving it to you, you take it. If we pay in all pennies, you take it. If we want to pay on 14 credit cards, you take it. That's what keeps you open!! The money from your customers! Unbelievable. I wish we send in that guy from "Restaurant Impossible" to go teach them something, he flips when places make rules like this. I've been debating about writing this review for quite some time. But after sharing our experience with friends and family at gatherings I had to write it. My wife and I have been married close to 30 years without kids, thus we go out almost every Friday and Saturday for dinner. The weekend after Labor Day, yes I know this is a bit old. We went to JM's for dinner on 9/8/18 a Saturday. The place was packed and we had a 7pm rez, we arrived at 6:15 or so had several drinks at the bar and by 8 hadn't heard anything about our table. I checked with the hostess and she said our table would be ready soon, we were finally seated around 8:15. No apology but I could see it was very busy. First thing a note on all of our menu's upon stating "Due to us loosing 11 or so of our staff due to college starting again service may be delayed we appreciate your patience." I've never seen that at a restaurant. We had a young gentleman server who advised he had just started working at JM's. He was very nice and took our order. 3 steaks and a lasagna dinner, never rec'd our salads or rolls and the cart of food came out. We advised that server that we didn't get our rolls or salads. That server said no worries I'll check on them, we advised the server that brought out our entrees please don't bring back these same entrees in 20 minutes after we eat our salads as they will be cold etc. We were celebrating a birthday and didn't want to have a bad meal especially after having 3 drinks per person at the bar. We didn't share that with the server. Salads arrived then came our 4 meals and guess what they were the same ones on the cart that came out prior, the steaks were cold a bit salty by the way and the lasagna was cold and more like soup lasagna casserole than traditional lasagna. Our original server was no where to be found and we never found him. A different server came to our table upon completing part of our meals and we advised it wasn't good and what had occurred with us getting the same food , she didn't do anything. Our original server the young gentleman finally reappeared and asked if we wanted dessert we said we were celebrating one of the ladies b-days he advised he would bring out a chocolate cheesecake well that wasn't the case it was a piece of dry chocolate cake no better than a Suzy Q with greasy frosting that all 4 of us could not even eat it was that bad. So we paid our bill with several gift cards we received for birthdays and holidays and were really really disappointed and don't know if we would ever go back. We've been to JM's several times prior enjoyed fish fry's, pizza on the patio and steaks in the dining room but this last visit was terrible to say the least. I hope our experience was an isolated issue and things have since changed. We are doing a re-do of our birthday dinners this weekend and going to Kurts Steakhouse in Delafield which is always consistent with food quality and service. read more

Went to Johnny Manhattan's recently for a dinner with my wife and our infant, as we had not been there in years (since before the remodel). Needless to say we will not be coming back unless some major changes to the staff are made. The food itself was decent, which is unfortunate given the service. After we were seated it took 15 minutes before a waitress finally took our order. Another 15 minutes before our drinks came. 1 hour after being seated we got our salads. And finally over 90 minutes after being seated, our actual dinner arrived. We were almost ready to leave as our infant had nearly reached her limit. So we had to eat fast. I'm not sure why everything took so long but I said something to one of the girls at the counter, I think she was a manager, and she sounded like she didn't believe me, and basically didn't give a damn. At the time we thought maybe it was just a bad night and we might try again, but recently some friends of ours went there and had an even worse experience. So it would seem that the current management staff are the problem and bad service is to be expected at this time. I hope the owners realize this and hire better staff in the future before it drives what was once a cornerstone of Richfield into the ground. read more
