I've been to many up scale restaurants in larger cities as well as local restaurants in the area. This is probably the worst place to go for steak. My steak came out grey when I order it medium, which we all know is a pink center. It tasted tainted and looked horrible. The manager came over and said "you know that it will come out a little grey" hmm I thought steak was supposed to be brown, not grey. Regardless the steak comes out and I cut into it.. it was well done! The manager shrugged his shoulders and walked away. I pushed my plate away and said I am not eating it. My husband tried it and said don't eat it. The server apologized and asked if he could box up our leftovers. I am just looking at him dumbfounded at this point. He took the food and put it in styrofoam square containers that they give you at George Webbs and a thank you bag! The bill was placed down and no one came around, because they actually charged us for that road kill! The bill came to 200.00.. I will never go back to that dive again and highly suggest you don't either. read more

Had a terrible experience. The waitress was over worked and obviously not paying attention to our table. We waited about 45 minutes to get a table and than another 30 minutes to have our order taken. When we asked to split a meal we were told we would have to pay an extra $20 for an extra plate, more than the majority of the entrees on the menu! The waitress than proceeded to spill my wine into my lap. I used all of the napkins on the table to wipe it up and she promptly left and it took another 15-20 minutes before she came back with more napkins. In fact, I watched her go to other tables and serve multiple other patrons before bringing us a napkin with a small amount of cold water on it after an entire glass of wine in my lap dried completely. They did give us a survey at that point to fill out and tell them how they could improve which was basically pointless. We hung out to get dessert which was partially discounted which was nice and I got a bill for $50 at the end of the night and a lot of leftover lasagna that I didn't want, too little too late. I think I won't be going back. Food was ok, but definitely not worth the price, drama, or time it took to get it. read more

On 12/6/2014 my boy's took me out to eat for my birthday, they picked Johnny Manhattan's because they know I like Lobster, and heard the lobster was very good there. There were six of us, My 2 sons order prime rib, when they got to the table they were both cold, they had to wait for a waitress to come around so they could be sent back, when they came back they were no longer med rare. My Lobster was just warm, and came with just a cup of warm butter,and my filet was just warm and raw in the center. I did not say anything because I did now want my son's to feel bad. the three of us had baked potatoes that were not done but very hard. And my feeling on the lobster is if you are going to charge $80 for a lobster it should come with a candle under the container you dip your lobster in. I was very surprised that there was no credit given off the bill for waiting for the steaks to be re-warmed.. Not really sure if I would come again, for what you charge not sure it is worth it. read more

Been there a few times with coworkers for dinner. Very warm atmosphere and the decor at Christmas in stunning (not tacky). Every appetizer and dinner that we've had was always excellent. The crab cakes are simply outstanding and rate them in my top 3 favorites I've ever had accross the country! Great bar area for cocktails! I will keep coming back! read more

The restaurant has just recently completed an addition/remodel. The place is amazing! What a great restaurant in a small town. I can't even imagine how much money the owner has invested in this restaurant. I agree with another reviewer that this is now our "go to place" for great food and amazing service. The staff is super friendly and you never feel too rushed. We've had the ribs and spiedini, both are delicious. If you like MaMa Mia's garlic bread, you'll love Johnny's version as well. read more

This newly renovated favorite spot has quickly become a customer service nightmare. The wait on a recent Friday evening predicted at an expectedly 1 hour became so bad people cheered when their table pagers illuminated. We waited ten minutes once seated to see a server. The menu was impossible for older know day to find something to eat. They settled for salads. The limited size option and price for pizza was ridiculous. Kids menus topped out at age 9. Seated in the newly renovated old English style room, the sound was so loud we could not hear each other. The repeated offerings of bread did little to satisfy as we waited over 40 minutes for our fish fries and house salads. This former fave has seen the last of us. read more

My wife and I had such a nice evening here, which must have been noticed, (our server, Heather, was quite astute and did a great job) and we were asked if we would be kind enough try our hand at writing a review for TripAdvisor and we gladly agreed. No influence, no strings. Having written that review and feeling so good about our whole experience at J M's we want to tell you here on YELP that this is a very nice place to dine. We would highly recommend you ask for Heather for your server if you do make reservations. We walked right in w/o any reservation on a Wednesday evening and were seated immediately -- the place was electric with good, connected, polite but FUN people. Read that as - they have a very large and super bar! Cubs World Series were on and w/closed captions and all the BIG TVs we were able to watch or ignore. I need to say that though the operators nudge the concept of casual Wisconsin Country Dining this is a very top end Fine Dining restaurant with all the frills. Honestly, we feel it may well be the best in the whole of the Southwest Wisconsin area. Not kidding! Yes, the prices are edging top end fine dining but you will get what you want and paid for. We can't stress the warmth of the rich wood and detailed finery that was so appealing to our complete experience. Go there -- you will agree with us! Yes, it probably gets crowded -- there's a reason. find out for your self why! We will be going back often and are looking forward to the Italian dishes as well as the weekend lunch menu with its pizza. This was our first time there in years and we live only about 10 miles away. We couldn't believe how the place was changed with the remodel. We had two different steaks and both were fork tender. Had a very nice dinner here with my parents on their wedding anniversary.i thought a very good value. Mom loved her filet. My prime rib was excellent. Others had shrimp and spaghetti and were quite satisfied. Was an excellent night to dine on patio. Service was excellent, a bit slow. They told us they would do their best with us outside. Rain earlier in day had caused them to call off waitress for patio. We were in no rush, and we were not rushed. My parents were surprised with cake to celebrate their anniversary. Nice touch. This place is a joke! Walked in at 4:50pm for an early dinner and the place was pretty much empty. We were turned away because they said they were booked solid starting at 6:00 pm. Not so smart to turn away business. This was my second visit and the first was not much better. At that time we were asked that if we were finished we needed to get up so someone else could eat. For a $350 meal, you'd imagine that your money is going as much towards a pleasant experience as it is towards a good meal. Unfortunately, I had neither. I'm a long time customer of Johnny Manhattan's, and my experience goes back even long before the renovations. I have noticed the growing pains of the massive addition both in service and quality, but I've stuck with the restaurant - It's one of the only options for a fine steakhouse in this area of Wisconsin. However, nothing has left such a sour taste in my mouth quite like last night. I'm not a nitpicky eater nor am I a nitpicky guy when it comes to eating out and having the wait service dote on my particularities. I could sense that our server was a little nervous, was probably new, and wanted to do a good job. When they brought out the steaks, mine was not even close to what I had ordered, and I debated even going to bat about whether or not to send it back. The server was so nervous that he spilled the wine when he saw that my steak wasn't cooked properly - I felt really bad for even bringing it up, but they're trained at Johnny's to make it right. So our poor server had the steak returned to the kitchen to get me a properly cooked one. 5 minutes later, a manager caught me completely off guard when he slammed a plate down in front of me with a butterflied steak cut open, and he said, "I don't know sir, but this looks rare to me. No?" First of all, I thought it was a new steak that they had cut open to insist to me that it was cooked properly, but had I not been caught off guard by him, I would have realized it was just the same steak from before and they cut it open to make a point to me that I apparently don't know what I'm talking about. The steak was not even close to rare. So for $350, I was patronized by the manager, had a medium-well steak in place of the rare one I ordered, ate long after my company was finished eating, was embarrassed in front of them, and not to mention had to deal with the steak being cold since it was butterflied wide open to make the point to me that I don't know what a rare steak looks like. All it says to me is that their management prioritizes saving materials and time in the kitchen more than making their long time paying customers satisfied. I'm really sad about my experience last night and hope that the massive increase in size doesn't mean that good management and service is no longer something that Johnny Manhattans prioritizes. read more

Been here on previous occasions and has always been great. Tonight a completely different story. I have never done a review before but here's our experience. Service was absolutely terrible waitress had no clue what she was doing, almost hit my wife and the friends we were with in the face while trying to open the bottle of wine. Took 20 mins to get the beer I ordered, food took forever to come out and our friends steak came out well done (ordered med rare) they half tried to say it was the lighting. We were seated on one of the sides and another waitress ran into me like 5 times without ever saying excuse me. We were there for over 2 hours between all the long waits for everything and we didn't eat dessert. Probably will never go back. If you want to look and charge like a high end steak house you really should act like one. Felt more like we were at Applebee's with the poor service and food but triple the cost. read more

Unfortunately we didn't stay to eat due to the poor service. We arrived early for our reservation to have a drink at the bar first. When we checked in with the hostess, we were told they were "behind" so we would have to wait another 15 minutes. After waiting, we were taken to a table in a side room. It was hot and loud. The room was basically taken up by one other large group that were having a great (loud) time. It appeared that the restaurant stuck a small table against a wall to give us a place to sit. Awkward! And it was placed by a server station full of dirty plates and constant activity by the wait staff. Took at least another 15 minutes for a server to come to our table. We asked him to talk to the hostess to find us a different table. That took him another 10 minutes. He came back to tell us we could have another table but we would have to wait 30 minutes. I could understand being seated at a terrible table if I didn't have a reservation. Unacceptable. We walked out. Not likely to return or recommend. read more

For years we've been told to go to Johnny Manhattan's and I'm thankful that we finally listened and went to check it out. Fantastic food, steaks made just perfectly, and a beautiful location too just a few minutes down the road from Holy Hill. I recommend this restaurant to any meat lover. It's well worth the drive for those coming from downtown Milwaukee, and be sure to leave time before/after to drive through the Kettle Moraine too. read more

My family (group of 6) and I went here for my birthday dinner. The place is fabulous inside and out, however, that's about all I can say that is good about our experience. Starting with the (fabulous) bar...it took an extraordinary amount of time to order drinks, I finally had to obnoxiously wave someone down to notice us. It continued to go downhill from there. The appetizers (garlic bread and onion haystack) were very good! That was it. They have NOTHING for kids. No suggestions, no compromises. I asked if they could just make a small pizza for my son and I was told they only have one size pizza, the 16". It's dough. Cut a smaller size. So I ordered him a side of creamed corn. Our lobster bisque was served cold and the lobster in it was a big lump and too chewy and hard to eat. An hour and half after sitting down, our salads finally came. My son had fallen asleep on me after asking for his corn for over an hour. Then, approximately 2 hours after we had sat down, our meals finally arrived. 3 of us ordered the ($33) petite filet. What was set down in front of me was a chunk of meat and 4 black mushrooms rolling around on the plate. Why were they rolling around? Because the plate was bone dry with not a drop of steak juice or anything. It looked completely unappetizing. And it was. It was terrible. Absolutely no flavor. And it was less than warm. And dry. I ordered medium and it was cooked correctly, but it was dried up with no flavor at all. The 3 of us who ordered the filet, couldn't even eat it. My grandma's ribs were served cold, however she did say they were good and she took them home. The other two meals were the trout and it was very "fishy" tasting and also wasn't finished. The lasagna was piping hot (the only hot meal on the table), but was nothing but globs of meat and cheese, no ricotta to be found in it though. When asked how our meal was by our server, we couldn't fake it. We told her the steaks were awful. She got the manager and Tony came to talk to us. We explained everything to him and he refused to do anything about it or even agree that we had our opinions about what tasted good or bad. When asked, he said he stands behind cold, dry, tasteless steaks. He basically argued with us and told us we were wrong, the meals are fabulous! I told him that I would then leave my own review and he left. So here is my review. Bad food, and absolutely horrible management. In this case, Tony the Manager, believes the customer is WRONG. WE had heard great things and I am starting to think that Yelp is filtering bad reviews which is sad but this place was not great- we ordered mushrooms and each got 3- and that was it on the plate- my steak was tiny for $33 and everything was FREEZING COLD- we were seated right away and the place was VERY pretty but it all ends there- I wish I would have read the google reviews before going for our 21st Anniversary(not acknowledged by the staff at all!)- never again- wanted to love it here but will not be back- no drink menu but the waitress said they have "tons of martini's" asked what kind and was given 3 options? including a cosmo- that is not TONS to me- Tiffany was so slow- our food took forever- my potato was totally raw and when I told her - she did not say sorry- she asked if I wanted a new one- brought me fries instead(they were good and my request after the raw potato) and again- no apology- it took over 2 hours for a meal that should have been an hour max- the service was just horrible- we sat with dirty plates in front of us all night and it was a tiny table- cannot recommend and would never go back- this was all last night- read more

My family has been a customer here for many years, because of the incredible steaks and great service. When my wife called on Friday night to make our Saturday night reservation, she was rudely told that the man who answered the phone was too busy to take a reservation and that she would have to call back later. Rather than quickly take her number and call her back when it was more convenient, she was just dismissed. When she told me how she had been treated, I couldn't believe that the customer service had slipped so badly and I tried again myself. Same treatment. When we were finally able to call back a 3rd time later in the evening, they finally accepted our reservation and told us what time we would need to vacate the table! What has happened to the great customer service of the past? After finishing our meal, I made the 2 women behind the desk aware of what had happened. My concerns about what had happened were met with excuses, but no apologies for the poor treatment. The proper way to have handled the situation would have been to simply apologize for the inconvenience, take my name and number, and call me back when it was more convenient for the staff. I guess business is just too good and the great customer service of the past is no longer necessary? Too bad - that's what kept us coming in for all these years. Time to move on to one of the many other great choices available in the area. read more

So when I arrived at Mr. Manhattans I was greeted by a pleasant atmosphere with a warmly lit dining area and beautiful double island bar. The restaurant was buzzing with a variety of people from young professionals to mature retirees. I took a seat at the bar next to an older couple and was greeted promptly and ordered a beer. Shortly afterwards I ordered the calamari. It was what you expect calamari to be, nothing amazing and not terrible...I mean it's calamari. After a few beers I needed to make use of the restroom which was fine...as far as restrooms go. When I returned to my seat (where I left my car keys, wallet & and full beverage) I discovered it had been "moved". The female bartender was apologetic on the move and immediately mentioned it upon my return. Turns out the reason my personal items were moved is the rather rotund elderly man seated next to me was the owner and he felt he needed more room to consume his revenue with his family in spite of a paying customer spending real money. The sad thing is I liked the place...but if that's how the owner treats his customers I'll pay no part in contributing to his miserable success. The reason I know it was the owner is I watched the bartenders nervously serve him and his companion and I listened as he complained their "tab was wrong" and "this is f****** ridiculous". For an old fart to own such a nice establishment you'd think he'd operate with a little candor and maybe even respect for his patrons. Johnny Manhattan?? The new dining room and bar look great. Fantastic updated atmosphere. Drink prices are higher than average and the consistency is subpar. We have visited many times and have left satisfied but not overly impressed for what we paid. Our most recent visit however was frankly a miserable experience. We arrived at 7:30 for our 7:30 reservation in our party of 7. We wanted to have a quick round of drinks at the bar, however we were told by the "hostess" that if we spent 10 minutes having a pre-dinner cocktail they would give our table away. After a small argument, in which the witnessing manager did not intervene, we were forced to immediately sit down. We were then promptly informed that 3 of the steaks on the menu were sold out leaving us with the least popular options. Our drink order took 25 minutes and we recieved 3 wrong beers and an incorrectly made martini. A busboy in the dining room was throwing dishes into the tray so hard that one shattered and hit a member of our party in the neck. As if this wasn't enough, none of the drink order was remedied and we were left fighting over ice water at the table. Afterwards, we went back to the bar for a drink before leaving and we were hastily apologized to with no mention of a free dessert or comp on the bill. Sadly this is a resturaunt that we thought favorably of in the past. However the poor service and management coupled with the lack of accountability for any mistakes really left a bad taste this time. We will not be returning. Plenty of better options in this price range. read more

This was our first visit to Johnny's! My first Impression walking in was this place was Beautiful! The fireplace was pretty, the Bar was comfortable and pretty big. Then I was Immediately disappointed when I was told they had no Drink Menu! I ordered a French Martini which the Bartender never heard of But did his best to make this for me and It actually was pretty Tastee. The Bartenders were very Friendly however we were told we had to pay right away as the owners were concerned about people taking off and not paying!!!! we put our names in for Fish Fry and were seated within 15 minutes, The Restaurant is very large and was hoping for a nice table...we were seated in a cramped corner which was very hard to get comfortable in (another disappointment) The side orders for the Fish Fry were quite minimal for four people I ordered potato pancake's I got one! and I have had better for sure. On a good note the Fish was good and the pieces were big it was also all u can eat which we were brought to us right away, our waitress was also very good. overall the service was good! My visit to the bathroom was a little disappointing as there was only one sink in such a big place and I had to wait to wash my hands. We made our way to the parking lot only to find out we were parked in!!!! they had a security Guy posted right where we were parked he tried to help us out of the parking space which was not helping, finally someone came out and moved the car in front of us and we were able to pull out!! not sure how or why they would park their customers like that?? we will go back to try their pizza which I heard was good, most likely it will be during the week we will see how that works out! read more

My husband and I went to your restaurant for the first time this past Saturday evening, from a huge recommendation of a close family friend. We are both in the hospitality industry and NEVER have a Saturday night date night SO we had to have one AMAZING experience! I DO NOT do Yelp however had to download the app and write this review!! Cahoots to GERALD the BARTENDER!!!! What an off the charts amazing, wonderful, could NOT ask for better conversation, recommendations, ALL around just an unbeatable time!!! My husband and I actually stayed and ate at the bar instead of our usual at a new restaurant experience taking it all in and transferring to a table, not wanting to escape any of Gerolds' tasteful accomidations!! Escargot and calamari were melt in your mouth to die for!!! The Cowboy Steak.....Ohhhh the Cowboy Steak......need I say more!!!! You have to go giddy up on this bad boy!!!! I'm excited to tell my clients to experience what we did and for ourselves to dabble in more of the SO many opptions of variety on the menu! Visited for the first time since the remodel was completed. Excellent atmosphere and decor. Had reservations for two at 6:00 pm. We arrived early so we could have a drink before dinner. Had a seat in the wonderfull area by the fireplace with our drinks and electronic pager to advise us when our table was ready. As of 6:30 the pager had not gone off (numerous tables were available in the dining room). Hostess came up to us just past 6:30 and asked what our name was and immediatley seated us. Hostess advised it was the first night with the pager system and appoligized. Our waitstaff arrived 10 minutes after we were seated. Every other table was provided bread but ours. Appetizer arrived after 20 minutes and salads arrived within 5 minutes of the appetizer and our meals arrived about 2 minutes after our salads. Mangager came around and asked the surronding three tables how everything was but didn't stop at our table. Sicilian steak was excellent, the t-bone steak was average. Hopefully the growing pains from the remodel will get worked out and we will enjoy Johnny Manhattan's once again. I would give them a few months to work out the kinks before dining with them again. Seems they are understaffed or possibly just lots of newer staff undergoing a learning curve. read more

We ate here one previous time before and it was incredible! So,knowing I loved the food the first time, my husband made reservations for Valentine's Day. I was so excited to go back for a romantic dinner with my husband. We were seated right away and our waitress was great! Our salads came first...and in the middle of the salad I bit into something I knew was not right. Pulled the object out of my mouth and was horrified to realize it was a USED DIRTY band aide (still curled up after slipping off of someone's finger)! I honestly was without words...my husband kept repeating to me..."are you serious??" Yes it was surreal! I asked to speak with the manager who "tried" to pass the blame on the possibility that they received the lettuce like that...as a manager myself I explained to him that regardless of HOW it happened it is obviously his responsibility to make sure the food he is serving is safe. They did make things right and we did not have to pay for our meals (we did tip the waitress well though since she was great). But I am still mortified by this experience! How could this have happened at an upscale establishment like this??? I have told all of my family and friends to avoid this place...they need to get their act together in regards to food safety (use GLOVES)!!! read more

I have had numerous people tell me to check out Johnny Manhattan's and last night my fiance and I took the 30 minute drive and went. WOW! The only thing I'm mad about is that I haven't come sooner! When we got there, my fiance told the hostess it was my birthday and she was so sweet...she sat us at a table that had one chair that was "fancier" and leather...I felt like a celebrity! Our waiter, Adam, was quite possibly one of the best waiters we have every had. He was so attentive and knew just when to come check on us. The salad was great--spinach/romaine, no iceberg lettuce. The steak was out of this world! We both had the filet and were not disappointed...the seasoning was perfect and the steak basically melt in our mouths. The wine was fantastic and they brought me out a wonderful piece of chocolate cake with a candle in it. The ambiance of the restaurant is so nice and it was not what I was expecting--way better! Adam, our waiter, definitely made our experience better and we cannot wait to come back! After we ate, we had a drink at the bar and one of the bartenders asked if we had been there before...since we hadn't, she offered to walk us around the restaurant and show us the other dining rooms and a really neat wine cellar room that holds around 20 people for private parties. That was so nice of her to take the time to show us. My fiance and I enjoy eating at the steak restaurants in Lake Country, but Johnny Manhattan's needs not take a back seat to the other steak restaurants! One of the best! read more

Johnny Manhattan's is in our neighborhood and we've been there many times. Although this isn't a 5 star restaurant, there are many good choices on the menu. The one negative about the food is it's usually overly salty. Leftovers we took home once were actually washed off so we could eat them. But here's the real problem...they have horrible customer service. It's not unusual to wait quite a long time to get a drink and it's not because they don't have enough help. They just don't seem focused on the customers. On a recent visit we got our drinks and asked for menus, but then no one came back for 25 minutes to take our order. And the restaurant was not busy. There were many open tables and open seats at the bar. During the wait, several wait staff were not doing much more than walking around. The staff seemed confused that we wanted to eat even though we asked for menus. Needless to say, we left unhappy and went elsewhere to eat. We aren't the type to complain or send food back, and we are pretty consistent in tipping 20% and are happy to do so when the staff provides good service. However, how does someone not understand you want to eat when you've asked for menus? And why wait so long to return to take our order? We're very disappointed about our most recent visit there, which may also be our last visit ever. The renovation is outstanding and the owner is a lovely woman but the service has lots of room for improvement. read more

As always on my visits to Johnny Manhattans the steaks were excellent. This visit and low score was the service. We came to the restaurant after calling ahead to get an idea of seating time. We were told 45 mins to 1 Hour. We were able to get there 30 minutes before we thought and were told at the desk it would be 1 hour and 15 mins. We said ok ordered a drink (very expensive and watered way down, I have had drinks here before and never had a Brandy Old Fashion taste so bad, I thought maybe it was the bartender. I ordered a second and confirmed it was the restaurant overcharging to stretch their profit. After 2 hours of waiting my pregnant daughter and grand child who has been a trooper so far are being told 20 mins, another hour goes by. As the place empties out we are told we will be seated, they seat us at a table then 5 minutes later are being told that a mistake has been made and shuffle us off to a booth to be reseated. We are now finally able to order after 3 hours????? No Apology No Discount No Bill Adjustment. As a local Businessman I have brought vendors salesmen and women, and a couple of Christmas Parties, This was a bad customer service experience my daughter and her husband said they would never want to experience again.
