Once he arrived, we couldn't actually FIND the main, so Will hopped on the roof and threw a snake down the vent in order to clear the clog. I called Johnny Rooter after a pipe burst in my wall. From the looks of it, I think it was kinked during installation, and time gradually weakened it. Either way, I had a room that was flooding, and my shutoff valve was missing the handle (great!). I of course still needed this pipe fixed, and being 8pm on a Saturday, I knew this would cost me a lot. They said someone would be out in 30 minutes, and I believe he was actually a couple minutes early. Ray took a look at the situation (which I had made far worse trying to "fix" it in the meanwhile) and got to work. A couple hours later all is right in the world, and I was relieved to hear what the repairs actually cost me. To top it off, Ray was a hell of a nice guy who gave me a lot of other plumbing advice and handled my problem with speed and professionalism. This company is great. My kitchen disposal feeds out through the same location as my clothes washer and the line in my backyard is flat to practically uphill. So every once in awhile when I least expect it, everything backs up. I called another company and they were at my house for 2 1/2 hours and couldnt fix it. They told me I needed to get someone to come out with a line camera which they didn't have. They gave me a bill for $450. After I started crying, the guy lowered the bill to $300. Again, they didn't fix anything. I called around looking for someone with a camera. Everyone that did was backed up for at least a week. When I called Johnny Rooter, they said if there was water in my line like it sounded like, the camera would not see anything. They said it would be 1/2 of what I already paid to unclog the sink. I said it was more than just unclogging the sink, but this is what they called it. The plumber that came out couldn't have been nicer. He snaked the line outside toward the house (which the 1st plumber said was impossible). And gave me suggestions about what I could do to fix the problem (some kind of water flush system), no food down disposal and dawn dish liquid/hot water after washing dishes. When he was done I was sure it was going to cost more than what they said, but it was exactly the same amount. Call this company if you want things fixed for a reasonable price. read more

Our shower had been slowly backing up for a few weeks, and it finally got so bad we had to call someone. Draino was not doing the trick! Will from Johnny Rooter came out the next day and thought that something had fallen down the drain and gotten stuck, and this was what was causing the clog, so he shot it down the pipe with his air gun. Hooray! Problem solved... until it wasn't anymore. Within a week, the shower started to back up again, and then the water from the bathroom sink started coming up through the shower drain. Uh, oh. We called Johnny Rooter again, and they had someone at the house within the hour. Turned out we really needed the rooter to flush this clog out. The first attempt with the airgun had simply pushed the clog further down the drain past where the shower and the sink plumbing comes together, hence the sink water coming up the shower drain. There was no charge for the second visit, and they had fixed the problem in under 10 minutes. I would totally recommend Johnny Rooter because they are fast, efficient, and genuinely care about keeping their customers happy. read more

Our humble home recently had some weird phantom leaking problems, so our landlord had us call in Johnny Rooter. The first time I called and described the problem, the woman on the phone said that our washing machine was drain was clogged and if we rented a plumbing snake, we could easily fix it ourselves. So +1 star for honesty, but then I have to take it away because, as it turns out, that wasn't the problem by a long shot! After the roommates and I decided we didn't want to take a chance on our non-existent DIY plumbing prowess, we called Johnny Rooter back to have them come out and have a look. The first fellow couldn't make heads or tails of what was going on- although not for lack of trying!- so we had to make a second appointment. On the second visit, the plumbers diagnosed and fixed the problem AND, breaking a major industry stereotype, cleaned up the mess they made. All the guys who came out were very personable. My one reservation with giving Johnny Rooter 4 stars instead of 3 is that since they fixed our leak, the cold water in from our kitchen sink doesn't run so cold. However, considering the possibility that this may be a problem with our water heater or the abominable heat of July, I can't be certain of cause. So for now, we'll keep the ice try stocked and tip our hats to Johnny Rooter! read more

I was awoken to a strange gurgling sound from the toilet. Hmm, that's not normal! Then I checked my messages to learn that the toilet in the other side of the duplex was clogged as well as the tub. I went to find my own toilet spewing up something really nasty from along the base. In a panic I started googling, fearing the worst and seeing a very expensive sewer line replacement in my future. I got lucky in that the first place I called couldn't come out for two days. I called Johnny Rooter and was told someone could come by in about an hour. 20 mins later they were on their way. The plumber who I worked with, Mike, was fast, friendly and did a good job. There was a small issue that needed a followup (not something he could have noticed) and he came back and fixed everything 100% the same day. I wish I would have read their reviews first - these guys will overcharge and misquote you a price. 2 guys showed up (Dennis/Alex) - one was in training because the other kept telling him what to do - which is no big deal - but he was so rude and talked down to him and when I asked him questions he did the same to me. Everything in my house was backed up - so they used a machine to unclog my main toilet but the machine was too big to fit in my other bathroom. They said they used another tool in the other bathroom - but I didn't watch what they did and they told me they couldn't unclog it. They then told me they didn't have the right tools to unclog my washing machine. He told me to unclog my sink and bathtub would be an extra $75 so I told him I would do it myself. They then gave me a bill for $312.50 and all that was done was unclogging 1 toilet. He then said I would not get a 30 day guarantee because the problem was most likely that I needed new pipes from my house to where the city connects to theirs. When I asked about unclogging my washing machine he said another truck with the right equipment would have to come back but it would be another $140. The receipt says $152.50 for sewer then $170 to pull and reset each toilet @ $85 each. That was never quoted to me on the phone. I went with these guys to try and support a local business - big mistake!!! read more

Each time they've come to my house, they've called before 7:30 am; I work until 3 or 4am. This happened again today, and I didn't answer because I was still sleeping. Ten minutes later, knocking on my front door + doorbell ringing. Didn't answer. Ten minutes later, a roofer (for my water heater) WALKING ON MY ROOF above my head. I previously had 2 great experiences with these guys, which is why they get the 3 stars. But this morning was terrible. I normally go to the source with issues, but I just got off the phone with them where I was put on hold, then: ME:"May I speak with John?" (who had left a voicemail at 7:12a) THEM: "Is your back door unlocked for the water heater?" ME: "Yes." THEM: "OK! That's all we need to know! BYE!" I want to give Johnny Rooter more stars, however, the service was mixed. I called at 8-ish on a Friday night to get someone to come stop the water that was pouring out under my house. The folks who answered the phone said that someone would call me soon. Which they did! Yay! Within 15 minutes I had someone on the way. Once the guy got to the house, he let me know that because of the water under the house and the fact that it was nighttime, any work he did would take "at least 2-3 hours." He advised that I wait til morning to have someone come out to "save me money." Hmmmm... I decided to turn the water off, go to a friends house for the night and wait for the morning guy to come. Ben came out in the morning, replaced a rusted connection and had the whole thing done within 1 hour! Super!!!! Obviously, the guy from the night before just wasn't interested in climbing under my house at night. Like I said ... mixed service, however... in the end I am super happy. I have used their services four or five times for plumbing issues at my rental. I had been happy with their work until the last time I called them. I had them come and replace some bathroom fixtures. Instead of calling and going over their plan/an estimate of how much it was going to cost beforehand, they did the work and then sent me an invoice after it was done. It cost twice as much as I expected. If I would have known how much it was going to cost, I would probably not have consented to the work. I talked to a manager about what happened and he acknowledged that they should have called me, but didn't offer any sort of refund to right this wrong. I won't be calling them again. read more

Beware of this company, because they will overcharge you if they can, and if you try to talk to them about it, they will become argumentative. I had a leak under my sink on a Saturday. A plumber from Johnny Rooter was called. By the time he came, my neighbor had already come and helped fix the problem. The plumber came in, noted the leak was fixed, looked briefly at the water damage, and left after about 30 minutes without any work being done. On Monday I received an invoice for $75 for the service call, and $168.50 for the "labor". A total of $243.50. The cost for calling them and having him come I understand. The labor charge was not justifiable in any way. When I called the Johnny Rooter company and spoke to the representative, explaining no work had been done and there are three witnesses to the fact, I was told $243.50 is the minimum charge for any call on the weekend, and that I should not pursue it. Their charging system seems quite shameless in this respect. I see there are several other people on Yelp with similar stories ("service cost twice as much as expected", "paid for a service but nothing was done", and many stories of no mention of costs until the invoice was received with exorbitant charges. I have only used them once, and never will again. I will also do my best to spread the word that this company should be avoided. read more

They were even considerate enough to be quiet while my 9 month old was sleeping and didn't wake him up. We are definitely grateful for them and grateful to have running water again. Our issues was the renovators that put in the baseboards put 3 inch nails in the baseboards that hit a pipeline behind the drywall in our bathroom and wall leaking, they had to chip away at the concrete and replace the piping. Horrible experience! Was not informed of their ridiculously high prices. While the technician was on the clock for me paying , I caught him in my garage talking on an extended length personal call on his cell phone. When he was surprised to see me , I confronted him that he should do his personal calling on his own time . He became angry and actually loaded up my water heater back on the truck and left . horrible experience! Thank God he left !! Let me start by saying that I don't Yelp. I use Yelp often, but I'm one of those people who take but don't give. That being said, I just had the best service call from Gerald and Coleman at Johnny Rooter and I want the world to know about it. I had an issue with the diverter in my shower/tub in my condo. Two other plumbers took a look and recommended replacing the faucet (which would have meant opening up the wall from my kitchen and shutting the water off to the entire condo complex - 34 grumpy neighbors in total). Gerald and Coleman from Johnny Rooter came to give their estimate for the work, but instead FIXED THE ISSUE IN 10 MINUTES. Turns out it was a simple fix to the experienced eye. I'll use Johnny Rooter for plumbing issues from now on. read more

This business has refused to honor their warranty on two occasions and they have twice charged me for plumbing repair that did not resolve my issues. Last night I came home to find water pooling in my home. When I called Johnny Rooter they specifically said they would not honor the 30 day warranty even though this was exactly why they had been out to the house previously. I had to call the fire department to stop the water and today another company is coming to fix the issue. I would never use this group. read more

Pluses: They came quickly. Minuses: The guy was in a hurry and did not problem solve. Ultimately we paid for service and nothing was fixed. He said it was the toilet, yeah, the actual toilet, not the float, not the flusher,not the sewage line, it was the toilet! The toilet is a non-mechanical piece of porcelain. It was not the toilet. The bowl would only slowly flush and plunging did not work so we called a plumber to auger. He augured with no increase in how fast it would drain. All the other drains worked well but the toilet was on a separate line from sink and shower and we told him that. He removed toilet and ran water down drain and it seemed to flow. However, it was a very long line (like two stories and both stories are over 15 ft) and what was happening was that the line was so long that nothing would back up unless water ran down them for a very long time. Afterall, the problem was not a block and total stoppage but rather a very slow toilet. The guy was in a hurry and just told us -" nah, all I can do unless you want to pay me to install a toilet. There must be something in the p-trap." He blew out of there so fast and said that we should reinstall the toilet or get a new toilet ourselves because it was easy and it would cost too much for him to do it. Well, we tested the now removed toilet with large amt of water and it was not blocked in the p-trap. Should have made him do that before he left but he was super in a hurry. We went to a clean out and snaked it ourselves after testing which way must be blocked by running large amts from hose. Snaked it and wah lah, worked. Total waste of money to have called them since the guy did not want to problem solve at all. Luckily, the homeowner had a snake and work ethic so he fixed it himself. Also, the plumber wiped the toilet seal wax on our hand towel. Gross and not able to remove it. Geez. read more

despite our best efforts, apparently we didn't quite get the pipes wrapped well... so this morning i awoke to the sound of rushing water. the spigot cracked. got the water turned off at the street and then called landlord, but got no answer. 3 hours later i gave up on waiting for him and started looking for someone who could come out and look at/fix this. given that austin never has cold snaps like we are currently having, a lot of the plumbers in the city were either already booked thru wednesday or just avoiding their phones. at the recommendation of another plumber (and then a quick scan of their reviews here) i gave johnny rooter a call. the lady answering/dispatching was very polite, asked a few pertinent questions and assured me someone would be out. i then anticipated i would be waiting for the rest of the day on someone, but to my surprise, 20 minutes later, martin was at my door! after negotiating a lucy inspection (my pup is very protective of our house) and making nice, he got right to work and roughly 25 minutes later, i had a new spigot and the water turned back on. yay shower! he also explained that it probably wasn't simply a case of not wrapping the pipes correctly, but that the galvanized steel that was there tends to rot and that probably contributed as much as the freezing weather. the only bad news was that it was a sunday, so they charge the after hours rate, but still, for fast service, $130 wasn't bad. my landlord can whine about it when i knock it off my rent next month. :) good service, dog friendly, quick. am pleased. read more
