Ambiance: it's a cute place, but the chairs are god awful. Like truly painful to sit in for how long you have to considering food time. And I think the legs on all of them must be weak cuz all our chairs wobbled. Service: our waitress was very nice, very attentive. Food definitely took a very long time to come out, even though we were the only people in the restaurant. Legit no other customers but the entrees still took like 45 minutes to come out. We spent literally an hour and a half there lol. Food: the food was actually pretty banging. I appreciate quality food rather than massive portions, and this place did deliver. I liked John's but felt like they could have done more. For a steakhouse with a view, most people here were in sweat pants and there were a lot of kids. This definitely brought down the overall vibe a lot and made it feel more like a chain restaurant than a steakhouse. I got a shrimp Cesar and it was totally average. The shrimp was seasoned well, the lettuce was fine. It's not really something that can be made spectacular so my expectations weren't too high. The staff was fine. They were attentive but forgot a few things. Our waitress also asked my mother in law how she'd like her salmon cooked which was odd, then doubled down and said that most people order it medium rare...which I doubt. We arrived around Noon on a Sunday and were seated right away. The hostess, who was also our server, was pleasant and attentive. Food: my boyfriend's burgers with fries was very good. The eggs on my avocado toast were perfectly poached, and the tomato chutney was divine. However, the toast was small, thin, and burnt and the avocado was not quite ripe like. I chose fruit as a side. It was a sizable portion of fresh fruit, which was a nice surprise. The setting is quaint and peaceful. The sticky floors were gross. After a few attempts to celebrate my husband, we finally made it back in and it was awesome! From start to finish the service, atmosphere, drinks and food were spot on. Which by the way was my second choice as they had unfortunately ran out of their salmon special, but that just goes to show you how amazing it is. We've gone to John's Grill for many many years and many times it's been wonderful though it has had its off nights. But my current experience my $42 duck was uneditable. It was so tough and chewet. I hated it and they're wonderful crabcakes now $30 had no crab in it that I could find. I don't know if I ever wanna go there again. John's Grill is a hidden gem. Situated right off Mukilteo Speedway next to the ferry terminal with some view. My wife and I have been here before thus the repeat business. This restaurant is a must try for anniversary, birthday , romantic date night, etc. as the ambience is romantic with dimly lit lightings and decor. The main reason for us to come back here is their crab cakes. They have the best crab cakes locally and I've had others but not as good as John's. The breading is light with a slight crunch and not oily. The crab meat portion is generous and the sauce is perfectly seasoned. I highly recommend this appetizer. For entree, we ordered the Seafood Linguine and an 8oz Filet Mignon. The seafood linguine, pasta not overcooked, shrimps were good size and not overcooked, scallops were fresh and not dry. The cream sauce was delicious with the right amount of seasoning. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. Some places cooked medium rare either too rare or too well done for my liking. Cutting into the steaks was like a hot knife through butter. Paired with the creamy mashed potatoes with a hint of chimichurri sauce just melts in your mouth. The vegetables were cooked just right and not mushy. I don't like overcooked vegetables. For dessert, we had the Orange cardomom bread pudding. John's use Macrina Bakery brioche topped with a hint of orange and cream sauce with caramel and the bread was baked nicely with a little bit of crispy crust. Overall sweetness is just right for my taste. I would rate the sweet level 4/5, 5 being too sweet. The service was excellent. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating. The host was well informed about their specials. Waitress and hostess were very friendly and welcoming. This restaurant isn't for everyone as their prices reflects quality, service and a fine dining experience. This is not your stop and go, it's more for special occasions or it just fit the bill for some. Last night was our second visit to John's Grill to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The first time was when they first opened so quite a while ago. Setting: Small and cozy. The dark green walls and simple decor contributed to the intimate feel. Food and drinks: We ordered the Manhattan and mojito. Hubby enjoyed the manhattan so he got another one; the mojito was nothing special. Our appetizers were Brussels spouts and steamers. Brussels were crispy and flavorful; the steamers sauce was on the bland side. We decided to add a $5 bread order to soak up the sauce but it came pre-sliced and toasted, unlike other reviews noting the bread was warm soft inside and crispy outside. Pork chop and seafood pasta were our entrees. It was a thick pork chop slightly on the dry side but hubby enjoyed it. I thought the pasta was perfect - plenty of seafood and the sauce was delicious. Subtracting one star because: 1. It took about 70 minutes from then time we were seated to get our entrees. 2. When I made the reservation on their website, it asked if we were celebrating any special occasion so I checked anniversary. Nothing was done although I overheard our waitress asking the next table if they were celebrating anything special. She never asked us. Our total bill including tip for a party of two was $199.85. John's Grill will not be our regular go-to place but it is a good restaurant to consider for special occasions. read more

One of my favorite things about traveling to out-of-the-way places is the occasional outstanding meal that comes as a complete surprise. Tucked away in Mukilteo, John's Grill is a small but cozy and welcoming restaurant that seeks to offer something a little higher end. Its specialties are seafood and steak, but you can add fantastic service and excellent cocktails to the list. The friendly staff attended to us even though we got there after 8 p.m., and they close at 9. The menu is small but focused, which means they put all their effort in a few very strong dishes. We were waited on by Tyler, who also happened to be the restaurant's general manager. He recommended the crab cake and roasted broccoli to start, and I (having eaten a lot at lunch) ordered a Caesar salad with grilled prawns while my brother opted for the swordfish. All I can say is, if Tyler suggests something, listen to him. He knows what's up. The crab cake was both crispy and tender, very meaty with lots of crab and not a lot of filler. It's a big crab cake, so definitely good for sharing among 2-3 people. The broccoli dish was one of the most interesting dishes I had ever eaten, with a spicy aioli and a delicious pecan paste that was so good I wanted to put it on everything. Our entrees were also outstanding. My Caesar salad was lightly dressed with a very tasty dressing, croutons, and nicely seasoned local prawns. My brother's swordfish (freshly delivered from Costa Rica and handled on site) was delicious, even though a little on the salty side. But the things we'll remember the most are Tyler's attentive service, and what was perhaps one of the best vodka martinis we've ever had. Martinis are simple but notoriously difficult to perfect. The vodka martini at John's was worth the trip by itself. Tyler is also very knowledgeable about wine, so it was fun to try his suggestions. I came here recently with my wife and mother-in-law for dinner. The dinner was very good and I would go back. The highlight was the clam chowder with corn, absolutely as good as any chowder I have had. My wife had the highly acclaimed $28 crab cake which is huge, but was a disappointment, basic shredded crab with heavy breading and she prefers lump crab cakes. For a main, I had the seafood linguine which had lots of seafood (scallops, lump crab, and shrimp) and good sauce/noodles. My wife had the salmon and said it was amazing. They have a solid wine list including Caymus and even Quilceda Creek ($245 a bottle). We settled for some Michael David Freaksbow which was really good. read more

Loved this place. Flew in on my husbands birthday and was looking for somewhere special. I had booked something else that looked fancier and some friends wanted to join us who has a child with them. The prior place couldn't allow anyone under 21 and I'm SO GRATEFUL we switched to Johns. The food was outstanding. Apps to entrees, everyone raves about their meal. The place is cozy but still upscale and nice. We had the most amazing server. Friendly and engaging throughout. He wouldn't sing happy birthday but we is a classically trained Shakespeare actor and he performed a birthday monologue to perfection it was perfect and so memorable. I've had tough overcooked duck in the past, but this was tender and succulent- just delicious! I was a little skeptical of the concept of the sage potato purée, but it was delicious and a new favorite! One of our party tried the Apple Cider Pork Chop. This was the biggest pork chop I'd ever seen! It was tender and flavorful, with lovely grill marks. Loved the apple gastrique that came on top. Looking forward to returning. Cute location in downtown Mukilteo; they have a small patio area for outdoor dining. This was our first time visiting and I was very excited to dine here and celebrate a birthday based on all of the positive reviews. To start, we shared the crab cake. It is plenty big enough for two people to split. It was good but I felt like they put too much sauce on it which detracted from the crab itself. They also brought fresh baked bread to the table. For entrees we shared the seafood linguine and filet mignon. The seafood linguine was excellent, tasted very fresh and had a good amount of seafood; loved the scallops! My steak was another matter. For a rare steak order, both ends of it were over cooked. The mashed potatoes were fine but nothing special and there was something off about the gravy. Not sure what it was but we both though it tasted strange and didn't use it. The vegetables looked wonderful in terms of presentation but had zero flavor to them. The apple wontons for dessert were tasty. Overall, I loved the idea of this restaurant but our actual experience was just missing something. It seemed like it was trying to have the ambiance of fine dining but didn't quite hit the mark. I recognize that everything has gotten more expensive but with the typical entree price here being $30 - $50, I expected more flavorful food and left a little disappointed. First time dining here. Called on a SAT evening and they graciously gave us a table for 8:15pm although they close at 9pm. We arrived a bit earlier hoping we can get a table sooner (kiddos were getting hungry). Table was not ready so we waited outside. The staff were being nice about it. We got to sit down around 8:25pm and was immediately a bit surprised by the price but I guess +30% is the new normal. Literally every restaurant post COVID. Anywho we ordered and for some strange reason the food took quite awhile (20mins?) and the kids are starting to get hungry AND tired so at this point we were getting a bit miffed. But once the appetizers finally arrived we had a taste we were smiling. Overall the food was quite good especially liked the apps and the entrees were not bad. But what really added points for me was the service. Our server Brook was super pleasant and friendly throughout our meal. We came in underdressed with two toddlers and we didn't ordered a ton but still we were treated with courtesy and patience. To me that's worth something. We ordered: /Bread Basket/ - mixed of sour dough and nine grain. Bread was nice & warm and soft in the center. Only $5 but I did feel that it should be complimentary. To me a bit synonymous to Chinese restaurants charging for rice or house tea. /Clam Chowder (bowl)/ - really like it. Never seen clam chowder with corn in it but I thought it was a nice touch. I'm a fan of corn tho. Lots of clams in the chowder and not too thick nor overly salty. $12 is reasonable given the quality & taste. /Crab Cake/ - OMG. Hands down the best I've ever tasted. It has a nice crust but it is also very "airy" and moist. Crab meat in every bite too. Later we learnt this is what they are known for. $28 pretty steep but I was not mad about it. /Seafood Linguini/ - wife liked it but we both agreed the bacon was too salty. Great dish otherwise. Again plenty of toppings scallops, shrimps, mushrooms etc. Appreciate that the scallop and shrimp were cooked just right very tender and juicy still. /Pork Chops/ - the porkchop was very moist and tender and it came with 3 large potato croquettes which were super flakey. I did wish the croquettes had more seasoning. As far as the interior ambiance/decor it was pretty low key but did not in anyway detracted the dinning experience. We made a reservation for two on New Year's Eve. There is parking in front and in the back of the building. Small restaurant with a bar area to the left as you first walk in. Servers wore all black and seemed very nice and professional. Interesting art on the walls and dim lighting. Herb sliced bread comes with dinner... the Brussels appetizer with the honey drizzle was amazing. House salad with the vinaigrette was nice and fresh. The service was great! Tyler amazed us with his knowledge of the liquors/bourbons in the bar! And the best of all was the food. Just spot on and tasty as hell. We went there as a work group and had the steamed clams, amazing, the crab cake, very good, the Brussels, very tasty, the calamari, very good. Many of us had the rib eye, cooked perfectly but slightly too much gristle, but very flavorful. So my wife and I decided to eat locally on a dinner date. I was originally going to reach out to Yelp as I normally do, but my wife told she wanted to try "a place". She told me that when she's driven by this place in the summer it's packed. So we went and I give full credit to her for this gem. The outside - like most of the best places I have eaten at it was unimpressive. In fact, there's a good chance you would drive right by it. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's just not memorable. By the way, it's easy to miss the main entrance...lol. The inside - it is very cozy, and compact. We attended at night so everything was dim and candles were lite. We sat at the bar. The staff - very friendly and timely. The waitress was both maître de and waitress. She was friendly, informative, and had just the right amount of "is there anything else/how's everything going". She made several suggestions some that were went with and others were ignored. The drinks - only water was ordered, so no review...sorry. The food - we ordered the crab cakes, staff recommendation, as well as a steak sandwich (wife) and the seafood linguine (mine). Let's begin with the crab cakes. Now I'm a huge fan of crab cakes and have had my share of good, bad and let's not ever go there again. These were in between good and bad. The first thing that stands out is the size of it. It was enormous, which I normally wouldn't complain about, but these are very large...especially for crab cakes. Now, I can get past that though, my main issue was really the cakes themselves. They just didn't blow my hair back. Next time we'll try the calamari. Next is the steak sandwich. This meal was really good, good enough in fact that I'd go back for it. It's not a meal I would get on a ferry, drive out of my way to go to good, but it is good. Last, but certainly not least, the seafood linguine! The piece de resistancé. I will say that in simply writing this I'm salivating over how wonderful this dish was. I can honestly say that I have maybe had 5 dishes, including this one, total where I thought to myself "this might be the best thing I've ever eaten". To even try to put into words what my mouth experienced when I took a bit of this dish would fall short of how incredible it was. The linguine was simultaneously simple and complex in flavor. The portion was generous and the dish begged for one to lick the plate, although I seriously considered it I didn't. I did however order bread to soak it up...lol. All in all this one dish, in my opinion, is worth a drive, a ferry ride, a walk, a flight.... Whatever it takes. Lastly, I will be going back and trying new dishes to update everyone. We got takeout from John's in Mukilteo a few nights ago. I got halibut & chips, and my husband got a steak salad. When we placed the order, we were told 45 minutes to come and pick up, but it ended up being more like 55 minutes. The cost for just those 2 items was over $75. My fish and chips was $38 and included 2 pieces of halibut and glorified potato chips. In other words the 'chips' were slightly thickened potato chips and not French fries at all! The only positive I can say is that the fish pieces were thick. The batter for the fry probably would have been good had it not been overcooked! My husband's steak salad was good. They kept the steak separate from the salad so as not to make the salad soggy from the steak juices. We have enjoyed John's in the past and had good meals there, but this takeout was incredibly disappointing! read more

The most pleasantly personable servers I've ever encountered. Then there was the food. A very well thought out menu that covers all the bases from burger to center cut steaks to several pasta offerings and a chicken dish. I don't hand out my "crave award" often but the seafood fettuccine gets a spot etched into it. Seared prosciutto, crab, prawns, and scallops in a cream sauce over delicate noodles with each element perfectly prepared. No overcooked prawns or scallops here. It's the kind of dish that pops into your head at random that makes you want to go directly there and scarf it but you can't because you're 20 minutes away...and it's 3 am. One of my pet peeves is a crabcake that's all cake and no crab. This one comes hot out of the saute pan crispy as a plate sized crunchy panko meat puck. A clever mix of scallop and hand-picked Dungee makes every bite meaty and crabby in texture, not breadcrumb and bell pepper. It reminds me of the ones I make with chunks of king crab that'll choke lesser men. The apple spring rolls with high butterfat artisan ice cream let you experience what a fried apple pie is supposed to taste like. I'm looking at you, McDonald's. No "compote", just hand-diced apples and cinnamon. Can't wait to work my way through the rest of the menu. read more
