So my wife and I decided to eat locally on a dinner date. I was originally going to reach out to Yelp as I normally do, but my wife told she wanted to try "a place". She told me that when she's driven by this place in the summer it's packed. So we went and I give full credit to her for this gem. The outside - like most of the best places I have eaten at it was unimpressive. In fact, there's a good chance you would drive right by it. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's just not memorable. By the way, it's easy to miss the main entrance...lol. The inside - it is very cozy, and compact. We attended at night so everything was dim and candles were lite. We sat at the bar. The staff - very friendly and timely. The waitress was both maître de and waitress. She was friendly, informative, and had just the right amount of "is there anything else/how's everything going". She made several suggestions some that were went with and others were ignored. The drinks - only water was ordered, so no review...sorry. The food - we ordered the crab cakes, staff recommendation, as well as a steak sandwich (wife) and the seafood linguine (mine). Let's begin with the crab cakes. Now I'm a huge fan of crab cakes and have had my share of good, bad and let's not ever go there again. These were in between good and bad. The first thing that stands out is the size of it. It was enormous, which I normally wouldn't complain about, but these are very large...especially for crab cakes. Now, I can get past that though, my main issue was really the cakes themselves. They just didn't blow my hair back. Next time we'll try the calamari. Next is the steak sandwich. This meal was really good, good enough in fact that I'd go back for it. It's not a meal I would get on a ferry, drive out of my way to go to good, but it is good. Last, but certainly not least, the seafood linguine! The piece de resistancé. I will say that in simply writing this I'm salivating over how wonderful this dish was. I can honestly say that I have maybe had 5 dishes, including this one, total where I thought to myself "this might be the best thing I've ever eaten". To even try to put into words what my mouth experienced when I took a bit of this dish would fall short of how incredible it was. The linguine was simultaneously simple and complex in flavor. The portion was generous and the dish begged for one to lick the plate, although I seriously considered it I didn't. I did however order bread to soak it up...lol. All in all this one dish, in my opinion, is worth a drive, a ferry ride, a walk, a flight.... Whatever it takes. Lastly, I will be going back and trying new dishes to update everyone. Fingers crossed that they have two such dishes in one establishment. HIGHLY recommend! read more

Really exquisite. First time here, made reservations for our 5 year anniversary. Staff is very friendly and attentive. I had the jumbo grilled prawns - came with fettuccine and roasted veggies (green beans, shredded carrots, pickled onions) .. my goodness it was DIVINE. I believe there was a beurre blanc sauce and a lemon wedge and both complimented the dish amazingly. They brought out a complimentary dessert for the occasion, we chose their seasonal apple caramel cheesecake. As you can imagine, it was incredible. If I never cross paths with that exact dessert again in my life, I'll be incomplete lol. My boyfriend had the 14 oz New York steak accompanied by roasted fingerling potatoes and the same roasted veggies as my dish. He chose the mushroom sauce for preparation. Not sure what cook he asked on his steak but when he reached the middle it was well under what he requested. The waiting staff had no problem taking it back and asking for more cook on it. Overall a really good experience and we will be returning again. It is, what I would consider, up-scale so prices reflect that but the quality of ingredients and preparation are up to par. read more

First off taking a bus from downtown Seattle to Mukilteo takes forever, but I ended my bus ride with dinner at John's Grill and it was worth it! Cody's aunt and uncle wanted to take us to dinner and they really liked this place and kept talking about taking us here, and we finally got to go last night! There's a Yelp Check-In special for free polenta app. There's also a Yelp deal for $15 for $30 voucher! Great deals, I don't think you're supposed to combine the 2 though. Anyways, we ordered: - free polenta app - crabcake - seafood linguine - pork tenderloin - chicken pasta - corn clam chowder - chocolate mousse Everything was delicious! Looking at pics prior to going, you knew you had to order the crabcake. It is giant, fluffy, and delicious! I really enjoyed the chowder too. Cody and I split the seafood linguine and the pork tenderloin. We both agreed we liked the linguine more than the pork. Both were tasty, but we liked the noodles better. We had a great time here! Recently had an amazing meal at John's Grill. What a treat! The highlight was the crab cake - AMAZING!!! I've never had anything quite like it. HUGE. LIGHT and AIRY. Absolutely delicious and all crab. Reason enough to come and try it. I love it when you look at a menu and have a hard time choosing because EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD. That was my experience. One of us settled on steak, and the other on the seafood pasta. We could not go wrong. Both dishes were rich, flavorful, beautifully presented and enough for at least 2+ meals. HEAVEN. Service was outstanding. My only regret is that I did not have enough time to explore the town and local area of Mukilteo. Good reason to go back and I can't wait. read more

We got takeout from John's in Mukilteo a few nights ago. I got halibut & chips, and my husband got a steak salad. When we placed the order, we were told 45 minutes to come and pick up, but it ended up being more like 55 minutes. The cost for just those 2 items was over $75. My fish and chips was $38 and included 2 pieces of halibut and glorified potato chips. In other words the 'chips' were slightly thickened potato chips and not French fries at all! The only positive I can say is that the fish pieces were thick. The batter for the fry probably would have been good had it not been overcooked! My husband's steak salad was good. They kept the steak separate from the salad so as not to make the salad soggy from the steak juices. We have enjoyed John's in the past and had good meals there, but this takeout was incredibly disappointing! read more

Great spot! Came in on a Saturday night with reservations. It filled up fast and it is not a large area for dinning. So I would recommend reservations. The food was great!! We had excellent service. The waitress was super friendly! Came here with my parents and my husband. We started with the crab cake and it was large enough to split 4 ways. We also had to try the corn chowder and it was excellent!! I had the halibut special and it was delicious! It was served with a side of veggies and fettuccine alfredo. It was very filling. My husband had the filet mignon topped with the Roquefort sauce and it was cooked to perfection! His came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. For dessert we all split the hot fudge brownie with ice-cream! Yum... is all I can say!! We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and look forward to returning soon. Plenty of parking all around. We had dinner at John's Grill today and we enjoyed it there. I ordered the seafood linguine, my wife ordered the sword fish special, and our son had calamari. My seafood linguine was loaded with seafood and the flavor was delicious. My wife said she loved her sword fish special.. and our son liked his calamari. Have been meaning to try this place for while, booked a reservation and made it in tonight. Lovely ambiance with nice lighting. Server was attentive and friendly. Small place with nine tables, cozy and intimate. Too bad both meals were average although the presentation was good. Had salmon with lemon sauce, veggies and fettuccini. Bland everything and not hot. Also got the filet mignon, mashed potatoes and veggies. Filet was decent sized but dry and overcooked. Potatoes bland, unseasoned. Yucky mushroom gravy that came with them. Expected higher quality for the price like we've received elsewhere. Love supporting small, locally owned businesses and don't mind dropping more money for places like this but disappointed to say we won't return. read more

I have been meaning to post this review for sometime. I came here to celebrate my 50th birthday a couple of years ago and it has remained in my mind to return since. The atmosphere is great and cozy, very romantic. The food outstanding, with a very local and fresh menu. The drawback for me is that it is on the high side for expense so I really only tend to think about it for special occasions. This is an experience that should be shared with someone special, so not really for a person on their own. The seafood pasta was wonderful and my partner said the steak was spot on. I loved the clam chowder with corn, but was a little disappointed in the crab cake not being lump crab. I keep meaning to stop in and try some cocktails, but not being a big drinker I have been waiting for just the right moment. read more

Why people like this place is a mystery to me. Let's start with the overall vibe & appearance. It's small, less romantic & more old lady/grandma. As evidenced by the sheer amount of older folks in here. This is their demographic & the food matches it. The chairs are not comfortable & are unsteady. Meaning they need to be replaced but we clearly aren't putting money into this. The servers are mid. While nice enough, the second you have any kind of non- positive feedback, they aren't trained in what to do. They are NOT prompt nor responsive. Which is odd considering the small size of the restaurant & they appear to be fairly if not overly staffed. We saw 3 different servers at our table & none of them were quick to bring the check, return the bill & help us escape this place. The drinks. The lavender lemon drop tasted like a regular lemon drop & the glasses are small coupes, so not a lot of quantity. I'm a 2 drink girl minimum & I felt no need to order another one, this is a problem for them. Now on to the food....lord help me with this one. For a hand cut, in house trimmed yada yada yada the amount of inedible meat/fat was frankly embarrassing for them. When our server asked how the food was, I let her know & her response was "well you ordered the Ribeye..." Wow. Ok. The steak was tough & difficult to cut. The presentation was also very, very wrong. Slapping a piece of steak directly ON TOP of a small pile of mashed potatoes? So now I've got pink potatoes from the steak juices? This is unappealing & not the proper presentation for this dish. Combine this with squash that was crunchy & the whole meal was just very disappointing. Our server Christine was soooo amazing!! She offered great recommendations and was so friendly and helpful! We ordered Grilled Beef Kabobs and the spicy chicken quesadilla. The beef kabobs were so amazing!! The spicy chicken quesadilla was definitely missing the "spicy" but still tasted just as amazing! For the main course I had the pan roasted garlic chicken - amazing! It could have had a bit more garlic taste but still very good. Christine convinced us to have desert and I'm so glad she did. I got the brownie with caramel sauce - WOW! Delicious! Still the best food in Mukilteo. However, I'm disappointed with their attention to detail and their extraordinary price increases over the last few months. Stroganoff went from $22 to $$32 in under a year. That's nearly a 50% increase! Inflation is 8%. Let's try to keep the increased costs realistic. Also, the portions have decreased. Best date night restaurant around. It's so refreshing to eat at a restaurant where they care about everything and it really shows. Not a cobweb, not a speck of dust. The service was spot on. Our server was attentive and warm, yet not "in your face" there when you needed her and didn't even notice her box up our food. Pacing was perfect, even though the place was full. The food.... We started with the bread basket and a couple of salads, along with the massive crab cake. I got the beet salad and it was gorgeously plated, and perfectly portioned. Best beet salad I've ever had hands down, and I've had them all. Wife got the ceaser and it was perfect also. I'd have gone heavier on the anchovy but I'm crazy like that. The crab cake was HUGE and was enough for both of us, could be almost an entree. Amazing crab cake and I'm so glad I ordered it. The sauce the pair it with really hits the sweet and savory spot. For entree we got the stroganoff and the seafood linguine, although I don't much care for scallops as they're so often over cooked and tough, or chewy. These were delicate and actually palatable for me, huge hit. Her stroganoff was also amazing, the mushrooms they use are very dark, I wonder what they are, full of flavor! Altogether blown away. And so refreshed to see that this place works as a heck of a team, as all aspects of of our visit was perfect. 10/10 will for sure come back. After one meal I think it's my favorite date night place in the greater area. The ONLY thing that could be better is location, an ocean view would really set this place so much over the top. What a gem and how could I have lived here so long and not been in here sooner? I am usually more critical as a former restaurateur and I just loved this venue! So we went on Saturday night with friends and so happy we met Lisa, Johns wife. She was fun and very informative on the menu. Crab cakes: amazing and should be called Crab souffle. A must have. Also we had the seafood fettuccine, very good. I had the fish special, the Steelhead, perfectly cooked and oh so good. Ambiance, very nice and loved the cute lil bar. While this was only our first visit to John's Grill, I'm sure it will not be our last! The food was excellent and the service from Lacey may have rivaled it as our favorite thing about the total experience! The restaurant atmosphere is warm and inviting - not a huge restaurant, but looked to have a decent sized bar area. I'd say that judging by the Wednesday night crowd, it's most popular with the over 40 crowd. The menu is relatively small, which means you're not overwhelmed with options, but al of the options sounds great, so you may still struggle deciding! We ended up with the Beef Stroganoff and the Prawns. Both were delicious! We shared a fresh blueberry crisp ala mode for dessert and took the majority of a piece of key lime pie home with us, as well as leftovers from the amply-portioned entrees. All in all, a fabulous experience that I'd highly recommend! read more

We've eaten there before, and always had a good meal. We were given a $75 gift certificate by friends who knew we liked it, and, somehow forgot about it. We rediscovered it when it was 18 months old, noting that it said it was good only for a year. I called to see if they'd honor it, and was told no, fairly coldly. Gotta clear the books every year. I can't complain, really, as it was our fault for misplacing it. But seventy-five bucks ain't hay. I'm pretty sure if I were the owner of a local restaurant, I'd have, in the name of good customer service, offered some sort of deal, for having collected $75 with no expense in return. One free entre, maybe. Or half the value of the certificate. Something to indicate a desire to retain a customer. Whatever. Just thought I'd mention it. Won't be back, obviously. read more
