Been here a couple of times and the pizza is pretty damn good but good luck getting a slice lately. I've never had a problem in the 7 years I've been living in this neighborhood but in the last couple of days it's been difficult to get service. They're closed Mondays. But twice I went this week (Wednesday and Thursday) before 8pm and they've been closed. The Wednesday I walked in and they told me they were closed even though they had a customer. Idk, maybe they ran out of pizza. Thursday I walk up to the door and it's locked. The owners are sitting inside reading magazines/books. Just looked at me and then back down at their books. The sign said Open but they didn't have any customers. Why not just close the store if you're not going to serve any customers. Very frustrating considering there aren't any pizza places nearby. I honestly wish I could give it less than one star. I'm really big on customer service. And these ladies sure have an attitude! I walked in once and they all stared down at me, like the "Whaddya want?" face. And when I threw out an empty bottle of mine, they were like, "This is not a place for dumping!" Whoa. Chill. Would it be better if I left it on your floor? You put a garbage can there, so duh, I'm going to throw out trash there? The pizza was decent. It isn't that great. And when I asked if they could possibly cut it into smaller slices for my son, I got a harsh "No, it comes in 8 slices." Come on. Hard to find this classic style of NY pizza at this price. The pizzeria is owned and run by two elderly ladies. I ordered two plain cheese slices -- it was crispy, well balanced and delicious, and for $5 what more could one ask for!? The pizzeria itself looks like it hasn't changed at all since 1965. I've ordered from here throughout the years, but not anymore. I've realized that I don't need to deal with nasty attitudes from the co-owners (?) while eating pizza that's overpriced & tiny in comparison to majority of other pizzerias. This is the closest pizzeria near me, but now I stay far away from this place. Save your money and just go to Maspeth for better quality pizza & service. This establishment doesn't even deserve 1 star. I've never been greeted in all the years I've ordered from here, nor felt at ease or welcomed. The mother & daughter who own/work here are mean & don't know anything about providing good pizza or service. I've lived in the neighborhood all my life and is one of the pizzerias in the area. The crust is thin and very little sauce and cheese. I feel that it's either a hit or miss with their pizza. Sometimes the crust is nice and crispy, while other times it's soggy and sloppy. The pizza, at it's best is OK, never great. Their chicken and sausage rolls are defiantly not worth the price they are charging. Not only are the rolls tiny, they don't seem very fresh. The beef patty is the only consistently good item at this place... The service here is sub par. I find them very stingy and rude. Ordered $50 worth of food once and they started complaining when I asked for extra napkins and condiments. The interior looks old. I don't know if this is on purpose or that they're simply too cheap to renovate. There is no reason for me to return to this place. I wouldn't recommend my friends or family to eat here. read more

After years of walking passed the place on my way to a friend's place & two years of driving passed it on Grand Ave, I finally tried John's. My friend who lives near-by was always a little...questionable of the place & had never eaten pizza there although she grew up in the neighborhood. Despite her thoughts I braved it & went on a random Saturday afternoon. I walked in and fell in love. The interior is amazing. Straight up retro & reminds me of the pizzerias of my childhood. It literally looks like nothing has changed in this place since 1986, which is very very rare to come by these days & the place should be praised for keeping it that way. Ordered a slice & was very happy with the thin crust & perfect sauce to cheese ratio. Staff was friendly enough & seemed to enjoy my fawning over the interior. The thin crust pizza here is very good. The cheese they use is delicious and it doesn't drip water like Gino's pizza (4 blocks towards Broadway; by the bus stop). It occasionally drips of oil when I fold it to have it on the go but the amount of oil on it is pretty bare. Some similar slices constantly drips, which is NOT cool because it sucks when it get on your clothes. Maybe I haven't tried too many rolls but the sausage roll here is AMAZING! It's much smaller than most rolls in other pizzerias but that's because the meat/cheese to bread ratio makes it great. It has a thin, crispy, and chewy texture to it which I think is great. For some people, $4.50 might be a bit much for a smaller roll. I always say though, quality over quantity. read more

Food: I spent my youth in Elmhurst and all we did was play basketball and eat pizza all summer, every summer. John's and Boulevard Pizza were easily the weaker of the 3 neighborhood pizzerias. Much prefer Gino's like 4 blocks away. The pizza here is limp, heavy on the sauce (in proportion to the thickness of the slice), and weak on the toppings. Granted, none of the toppings/cheese here or at the other two pizzerias are gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, since they are just local joints, but I want a quality baked slice. I have to say, neighborhood pizzerias are the heart and soul of the NY pizza scene. Get a solid, baked and crispy slice, anywhere in the city for 2.25 (remember when it was a buck?) now. Quick fuel for us busy people, just don't get it here. Drink: Bottle/canned soda, fountain is a lil old. Service/Crowd/Ambiance: Plump old ladies that were sometimes cheery and sometimes grouchy run this place. Never crowded so its easy to grab a counter space or booth. Local, old school pizzeria feel. It's close, a block away and down the corner. But I still don't meander here, unless I'm taking a walk with my neighbor to get it. The service is great, a real "ma and pop" type of shop, always see the same two women, I believe a mother/daughter, working there, which is sweet, I appreciate the fact that these establishments still exist. And they are always exchanging small talk with customers, which is why I feel they have lasted this long- they created a strong loyal base. It's a small place, I imagine it's best for takeout or on the go, since a few booth/tables, and some stools at the counter. Oh, one thing to add, they close the entire month of August, so if you are craving John's, get it before they close up shop for their vacation. Let's see, they do deliver, which is a plus. But as for the pizza, it's not a reflection on them per se, but just my personal tastes when it comes to pizza. It's a thinner crust than most, almost like a flat bread, since there really isn't any noticeable crust formation. Not a lot of sauce, not a lot of cheese, so overall, I'd classify this as a really simple slice. Would I eat it if it were served at a party? Sure. I've been going here since the late 70s as a kid. Consistently delicious New York-style pizza in a classic pizzeria, served by the same family. I'm moved far away, but always stop by when I'm in town visiting. The pizza is thin crust, always fresh and delicious. They also have particularly yummy Sicilian pizza (the thicker, fluffier square pizza, for those that aren't familiar with it). Ok let's begin... I first walked into this place and a customer was asking the mom if she could have some napkins. The mom snapped back"Ask my daughter can't you see I'm making a pizza!". The daughter who was on the phone ,with her cousin ,never stopped talking but handed over the napkins. I ordered 2 slices (To go...No way was I staying there) only to come home and take a bite out of one of the best pizza ever. Since then I have been there often. This place truly has really good food. No frills just pizza,heros,baked rolls, calzones and beef patties. No platters, no garlic bread, no deliveries. Don't care it still is a good spot and since then the women have both warmed up. This is a good place, The atmosphere is nice, I personally haven't experienced bad service, and the food is good. But by good, I mean decent. The pizza's are very thin; I'm not sure why thin crust pizzas are a thing, because they cost the same and are not as flavorful as regular pizzas. The pizza's are 3 stars; I'd rather walk extra steps and go to Gino's Pizzeria 7 minutes away. As a local resident, I was captured by Gino's rather than this place. The garlic knots for 1 dollar though is 4 stars; tastes decent and is fairly plentiful for its price. I'd give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Calling all thin crust pizza lovers in Elmhurst, this place is for you. This is one of the best pizza spots in the area. It's straight up pizza without the fluffy crusty extras (unless you like that sorta thing). For me, there aren't that many neighborhood joints that I return to on a daily basis. This is my go-to pizza place. This summer, they didn't have icys, which I always look forward to, but it's okay. Keep in mind, they are closed on Mondays...Which oddly enough, is the one day of the week I really crave their pizza after work! It's all good though, they are open until 10pm almost every other night (I think except Sunday) which is later than most spots in the area along Grand Avenue! And the decor? It's an adorable pizza parlor that makes me feel kind of cozy. If they ever tear down that cute vintage interior I will be sad. read more

I've been in this neighborhood for a good 20 plus years and the locals around Grand ave continue to glorify this pizzeria as if it's New York's best pizza. They have a sign that say's they have the best Sicilian in town, but honestly, how many pizzeria's have the same advertisement? It's a little cheesy. Food - The pizza here is okay, it ain't great. The crust is super thin, very little sauce and cheese. Their chicken and sausage rolls don't taste very fresh. There's really not much of a variety here. I get the constant feeling they're being very stingy with their ingredients and napkins. Service - The service here is fine, it's never too busy to the point where you have to wait forever for your slice. The staff here can be oddly strange sometimes, on some days they can be very friendly and some days they're just grouchy as hell. The interior is very old school, it hasn't changed at all. It looks like it's from the 70's which is cool. I remember way back in the day, the old gentlemen who I assume is "John" use to smoke his pipe in the pizzeria. The reason I go back every now and then is because it brings back old memories. I came here just about every week when I was attending the elementary school P.S. 102. I saw the lady kick a customer out because she was patting down the grease on her pizza with a napkin. The only reason why they get 2 stars is for the pizza itself. This place is pathetic. The co-owners are by far the worst people who run a food joint. They both have a nasty attitude and a permanent bitch face on, and are pretty unwelcoming. They also open whenever they want -- don't bother looking at their hours online. I have gone a week passing by the place everyday and not seeing them open once. My dad claims he's seen one of the owners walk up to the shop to open up, but instead just walked away and walked back home. Their food is average, I don't see anything special about it. It is true that they're only still in business because there are no pizzerias nearby (closest one that comes to mind is the one next to I.S. 73 in Maspeth). Don't ask for garlic knots (they probably don't have anymore), avoid at all costs (unless you're desperate for a meager beverage selection and cold pizza served from a witch). read more

Nice little thin crust slice if i do say so myself. The place looks like you are in an Austin powers movie, lots of orange.... kinda made me feel like i time traveled to the late 1970's. Any how, the pizza itself is very good, the cheese is nice and greasy just the way i like it. Note, it's not a heavy greasy pizza, that tears apart your slice; it's more kind of that orange little grease that good pizzas should have. Another thing i liked about the slice was that it has a very pronounced basil taste, not overpowering, but very flavor enhancing. The amount of cheese and sauce is perfect, very well rounded, oh and the crust, another important part of the slice, was not burnt, but done to perfection. Recently moved in the neighborhood and was craving pizza so I ventured out and found Johns! I noticed they're really the only pizza joint around yet it was a nice quiet, calm environment which was pleasant (unlike other pizza places Ive been to, usually booming and loud). Noticed it was just a older mother and daughter running the place which was nice! It felt homey. It's a old fashion place. The mother made the pizza right in front of me and I took it out/to go. I couldn't find in the pizzeria paper menus but they provided magazines during the wait time which was nice. To me the pizza was smaller than expected (I ordered the large); usually large pies elsewhere don't fit in my hands so I use both hands (they're 16in) but this was abit on the small side. Overall I loved it! Pizza crust was nice and crunchy and pizza tasted amazing! For a large to be only $15 tax included, the price was a steal. I used to go to places where large was $20 so I'm satisfied with Johns service and quality and will definitely return. read more

The women who run John's are all very nice. They have a cult following and after you eat their pizza you'll understand why. I am very partial to their heroes. I enjoy the eggplant parm hero, the chicken parm hero and the sausage parm hero the most. I also enjoy an occasional beef patty with cheese and or garlic knot. Keep up the good work! read more

Came here during a break from work. My coworkers ordered pizza. I had spinach roll. The stuff is fresh and good. By the way one of my coworkers ate her slice, the pizza looks yummy! It was very saucy and had lots of cheese. That's the way I like my slice. As for my spinach roll, it was neatly rolled up and packed with a good amount of spinach. They cook as needed so the food is not out on the counter for a long time. I gave the restaurant 3 stars because I only had the spinach roll. I will definitely go back to try a slice and a sausage roll. Then I'll probably change the rating to 4 stars or 5. I am looking forward to ordering from there soon. read more
