Went here on a "mini-cation" with my husband. Definitely stop here if you are hungry- they have a variety of food and breakfast all day! I got a cheese burger (cheese only- how I like it) and it was very good! I haven't had a cheeseburger in probably 6 years or so and I'm glad I chose this place to have one! John's Place is a bit of an institution in the high desert, but really it's just a typical diner serving typical diner fare. The food is a step up from Denny's but that's not saying much. I've been to John's Place twice, both times with friends who really like eating here, so clearly not everyone's as underwhelmed by their food as I am. The menu is plenty big with a wide variety of options, which is, in my experience, often a hallmark of restaurants characterized by mediocrity. Making so many different dishes from scratch using fresh ingredients would be very difficult. Hence I suspect they're using a lot frozen stuff, pre-mixes and such. That's what the food tastes like in any event. The first time I ate at John's Place, I got a fish taco and a chicken fajita taco, after which I concluded that this may just not be the place to order South-of-the-Border dishes. Of course I wasn't expecting authentic Mexican food but these tacos were very bland. The second time, my friends urged me to try a burger with zucchini fries. My cheeseburger was alright but nothing special and the cheese tasted like processed cheese product instead of the real thing. On the plus side, my burger came with fresh green lettuce (not iceberg), tomato and onion and was probably superior to fast food burgers (though I don't eat at fast food places so can't really say for sure). However, it was nowhere near the burgers I've had at JT Saloon, Pappy's or Crossroads, though, to be fair, it was also not as pricey. The zucchini fries were interesting but could have used some seasoning. The lack of seasoning seems to be a common problem here. One of my friends ordered the avocado fries even after being warned that they consist not of fried avocado -- like the zucchini fries are fried zucchini -- but rather regular French fries with an avocado sauce. Admittedly I was curious about this combination, thinking it would be sort of like fries with a guacamole dip. But no. It's actually super bland French fries with a super bland avocado "sauce." I assume they make this sauce themselves since I can't imagine there's a market for it. I'm actually kind of amazed that anyone eats this. Anyway, if you go expecting a fast food or Denny's type experience, you may not be disappointed, and supporting a locally owned mom-and-pop place beats giving your business to the usual corporate chains. There's an old travel tip that says you should look for where the locals eat if you want a good meal. That's not always proven to be good advice, for me in the past, but this time it was dead on. If you just drove by, there's a very good chance you would not go in - and that would be a mistake. We did a lot of yelping before we chose to go John's Place, and based on the reviews decided to give it a try. But their food is always consistent and you are bound to see 99% locals, most of whom dine daily at John's Place, hobnobbing and being friendly and catching eachother up on the latest and greatest. As we waited for our car to be serviced, we were directed to go to John's Place. The restaurant was nothing spectacular. It was cozy and clean. The reason for the 1 star was the service. The staff was ineffective in being hospitable. The food was nothing to say this place is great. It wasn't. For $8, I received one egg scramble, 2 slices of French toast, and two pieces of bacon. It made me wonder what I did wrong to get this kind of treatment, but I guess this is who they are. Hope your visit is better. read more

On our drive home from Arizona found this place on Yelp... decided to stop in and was pleasantly surprised. Prices were good, its was your typical diner food but the wait staff was SUPER friendly and helpful when we walked in the door. Decided to get the burger/fries combo mentioned on the signboard out front and it was good but even better was the idea of getting rings, fries, avocado fries or sweet potato fries in the combo for the same price. Short story: A classic in its own right Long story: John's Place in Yucca Valley has been a favorite in my family for about 4 years now. The food is always good, the service is always friendly and home-like (they treat you like family; seriously, what café or greasy spoon still has waitresses that call you 'sweetie' or 'honey'?), and the prices are great. My favorite part though? The customers. If you have the pleasure of dining here on a Saturday morning before 7:30 am, you'll see regulars start to teeter in. They'll engage in inside jokes and conversations with the waitresses (who will great you with a 'sweetie'). Their orders will be memorized. Their Coffee will be filled before yours is. It will ALL be good! When you go here, if you're REALLY hungry, go for the Pancake meal. If you're sort of hungry, go for the 2 egg + hash browns + Toast combo. This place was recommended to me by the workers next door at the Flying J and I went the next week with my husband. My Husband ordered the Ortega Burger and I ordered the French Dip. These 2 orders were not good at all. The meat was so so so DRY even when I dressed it up with Horseradish and dipped in Au jus it was still dry. Almost choked. I would go here a lot when I lived in Yucca Valley many many years ago. I went through Yucca 4 years ago and stopped to eat. Still the same great food and huge portions. After giving up on a post-climbing dinner at the packed Pappy & Harriet's our 8:30 pm dinner options were quite limited. On a whim we stopped by John's Place, not expecting much. Their mushroom burger was not bad (despite the canned mushrooms), and even better was the machaca we had for breaksfast on the way to another day of climbing in Joshua Tree. Waitresses are friendly. Food is not bad, not great. DO NOT ask for a substitution because that's not allowed. Wanted an omelette with mushrooms instead of bell peppers and onions. Not allowed. First I was told that bell peppers and onions were "free" and they could add mushrooms but I would be charged. No problem. A $9 omelette turned into a $12 omelette and there wasn't even $.30 worth of mushrooms in it. We have enjoyed two separate visits to John's Place this week alone! The first visit I ordered the shrimp salad. Wowee! It was a huge salad, loaded with shrimp, boiled eggs, cabbage, lettuce, a WHOLE avacado, cheese and ranch dressing. My son enjoyed the chili cheese fries (on both visits) and on both visits was unable to finish the gigantic portion. The husband made a bacon cheeseburger disappear in less than 5 minutes. The onion rings are hand battered and amazing. I was suprised to read people not delighted with everything about John's Place, aside from the review expecting a totally different venue in a totally different state (weird), the customer service we experienced was above and beyond! On our first visit we were kindly walked through the menu options, and all of our questions were answered politely. There was limited seating indoors, but we found a nice spot towards the back. I recommend sitting as far away from the door as possible, as there is a lot of traffic coming in the front door, and the line seems like it could get backed right up to your table if you sat up front. Bottom line, in this part of the desert our choices are limited, if we don't wish to travel down the hill. John's Place is a great affordable option for military families like ours, and the place is kid friendly although I do recommend for those of you with little ones to take the opportunity to use your dining out experiences as times to teach your children about how freaking rude it is to stand on booths starring at the diners behind them... just sayin. There is a dearth of good food in the hi desert, but this place bucks the trend. We had the 1/4 lb burgers along with onion rings. They don't skimp on the portion size and the burgers were also juicy and fresh. Onion rings were crispy and worth getting again. The interior of the place is very plain, but there is a set of tables out front under and awning that is nice during non summer months when it hits 110 degrees. Prices were very reasonable and the lady at the counter went out of her way to be nice. Arguably the best restaurant in the entire Basin, and that is unfortunate. read more

For the 29 Johns Place. I believe there is a difference in quality at location. Our first go around in Yucca was unsatisfying. I order the Philly cheese steak the first time - all fat and grizzle, not edible whatsoever. Our second visit and why I'm giving it 5 stars for two step up from fast food that is fresh and doesn't break the bank: I never like to leave a review over one bad experience and ruin a restuarants name, unless they need some serious damage control. So I waited until I tried again. We ate there yesterday and ordered chicken tenders they are okay. I wish places around here made fresh ones where they bread them themselves, like Hooters boneless wings, but you just won't find them here in the desert. However, they were meaty and not all breading and nasty party of chicken. Nice white chicken. Ceaser salad - came untossed, but they fixed it with a great attitude. It is not made with romaine, it's more of a spring/garden mix. (Probably to offset the cost of having to throw away romaine if enough ceasers are not ordered. California burrito - missing the sour cream and avacado, you need to ask for that to be added yourself. French dip - yay a meaty sandwich with little to no fat! It was on point, so to say. I really enjoyed it and the au jus that comes with it is also tasty. I really like that you can order a sanwhich without fries included and save a few dollars on something that you only take a couple of bites of, or just not really want. Fries are great, but too filling. Corn dog and fries, typical. Exactly what you would buy at a store and fry yourself. Service: exceptional, friendly, caring and warm. Happy to find this local diner with outdoor seating, excellent food, and friendly service. We drove to Pioneer town from Palm Springs and we're told there was a 90 minute wait at Pappy and Harriet's. So we happened upon John's Place instead and happily enjoyed delicious burgers, onion rings, zucchini fries, and raspberry lemonade in their outdoor garden area. The menu is huge, so you'll find pretty much anything you are craving that would be expected at a high desert diner. The young gal taking our order was helpful and friendly. As we pondered the ginormous menu, a diner walked up from his seat to recommend the onion rings...They were that good, and we thought the zucchini fries were even better.
