Water and cranberry juice to drink at a table, both came with lids that had a location for a straw but they don't have straws. So I took the chance and took the lid off the cranberry juice hoping it wouldn't spill all over me as the plastic cups were very flimsy. I ordered a combo with a veggie burger and onion rings. Had to take it back. The onion rings coating was very hard and falling off. It was not good at all. The veggie burger was mushy and tasted like bread stuffing. Another couple said they also had the onion rings. I asked if they liked them, they said no. They used to be much better according to them. I also noticed a dad and his tweener son having a hamburger and fish and chips. They left and I noticed they didn't eat their fries and fried fish, which I thought was odd as my experience is that young boys usually eat everything. Went here for breakfast the last 2 days, place is chill, seems to be a local hot spot. It gets little rushes and it looks like its all handled by 2 servers and a bus boy who hustle their asses off to keep things moving. They might not have time for chit chatting or trying to connect with ya to make friends, they're strictly business cuz they have to be. All the bad reviews here complaining about bad service have prob never worked in the industry before and are prob oblivious to the other 8 tables the servers trying to keep up with, so yeah you may have to wait an extra minute to get more ice tea, BUT it's important to recognize it's not because the servers busy texting or talkin to their coworkers about this weekends plans, it's because they have a whole lot to take care of and they're doing their best to get it done and keep everyone happy. So i wanna thank the 3 young ladies who didn't have time to give me their names but made sure I got my food and drinks as quickly as they could. Take note you can't tip on a credit card payment here so bring cash, or do like I did and go to the atm 20 feet away at the gas station. Don't be a jerk n use this as an excuse to not tip cuz you're a cheap ass. These girls bust their asses and don't make as much as they should. I wanted to like this place, I really did. Walked in about 3 PM on a Saturday and it was packed. That's a good sign for a restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Some guys got up and I took their table I was looking forward to ordering. Unfortunately that happened 20 mins later. My son and I decided on chili burgers. About 40 minutes later it finally arrives. Onion rings were cold and the burger was worth about a eight minute wait. When getting up to pay I was asked how everything was and I replied "the wait was nuts, is that usual?". "Well you came during the lunch rush so that not our fault". At 3 PM? That lunch? The place has emptied out 10 minutes after we got there. Justin met that the system is broken or your understaffed. Blaming the customer for coming in at a certain time is stupid and ridiculous. Counter girl fail. For four other people complain about the way during my stay and were dismissed with similar sarcasm. Being that I am born and raised here in the Morongo basin, I have eaten at John's Place for 20+ years. I hate to say this, but John's Place has by far gone down hill. The outside has gotten a very nice facelift. I remember when John and Patty were more involved they truely cared about there customers and it showed emmencly. However, recently it's been the complete opposite. From my understanding they have there daughter running it now, which is a huge mistake for the business. She has no customer service skills, and is very RUDE, could care less if the customers are happy and satisfied, and most of all is running that establishment into the ground. I've decided to never eat at there again and so have many other locals I know. It's a shame because Johns place use to be my first choice always and now it's not even a last choice. read more

This place has...kinda gone downhill the past couple years. As a Yucca local this place has always been a landmark and always had a nice atmosphere, but now it's kind of turned into a fast food joint. The prices have gone higher (which is understandable considering the times but still disappointing), and the quality of the food seems to have changed. The staff also seems pretty stressed every time I've gone there. I'm not saying don't eat there but consider your options before you go to John's. read more

35 min. wait to get breakfast for 1 person. Rest. is somewhat busy, but more with to-go orders I am told. My order finally comes, and my eggs are undercooked, and I can't figure our where the burnt smell is coming from??? I finish my eggs and sausage, then proceed to my pancakes. The first bite tastes like hamburger patty. Second bite, burnt! The middle pancake was burnt and hidden in the middle. Also, a nasty greasy hamburger taste on my pancake. Yuck! Game over. I grew up in Bell Gardens where they have the absolute best Char broiled burgers at JB Burgers. So I was super stoked to see Johns Place offered Char Broiled Burgers. Friends of mine lived on Church Street and we had burgers for dinner and they were great! The burgers not cooked to order but the taste was just like I craved of JB Burgers. I was in town for business and my husband and I stopped in and had the displeasure of dealing with the over weight waitress that had a chip on her shoulder bigger than her behind. I let it pass because after all why let someone with a rotten life ruin my day! Again food was great just as I expected and yeah burgers not cooked as I had asked for them to be cooked but still tasted like JB's. Went back again on April 2021 and had the worst experience with the so called manager Ana. (Another big girl with an attitude like someone ate her bologna sandwich!) She took my order in between her chatting it up with another worker. She had zero interest in being pleasant and after taking my order "INSTRUCTED" me to wait outside. I literally waited 50 minutes for a Cheese burger, 2 puppy patties, fried and a coke. I went to the window and stood there, the entire tine standing there watching her chat it up and being completely unproductive and not acknowledging my presence at the window. So I knocked on the window - Her response was rude as f*&%. She literally told me "Lady can you please not knock on my window so hard, you almost broke my window" I told her I had not knocked hard and she continued to argue with me. My suggestion for her to conscientious of how she speaks to her customers, she grinned and said "uh huh have a good day" My suggestion John- re-evaluate who you leave in charge of your business as she leaves a bad taste in what should be a good experience with great food. We were reluctant because it was only 3 1/2 average rating but SO glad we came. The fried zucchini is the best I've ever had. The order was enough for our family of four as an appetizer. Breakfast is served all day as well as a large number of Mexican entrées . It is the quintessential little "all in one" burger stand, with something guaranteed to please everyone . I had a cheeseburger combo with fried zucchini and it was very good. My husband had a chicken sandwich with fries. They were very generous with their portions on both the zucchini and the french fries . I ordered a classic breakfast plate with bacon and eggs, but there are tons of breakfast options ranging from a la carte items to breakfast burritos. Servers will make sure your coffee and water cups are always full! We weren't the only restaurant-goers early on a Saturday morning, but as more customers rolled in, the atmosphere remained pleasantly peaceful thanks to well-selected 60's hits. The interior of the restaurant appears to be recently renovated - it's spectacularly clean with simple but warm decor. My only piece of constructive criticism is that I wasn't able to leave a tip for our server on my credit card! Bring a few bucks with you for tip, it's well-earned! I've only been here once and it was for breakfast. This place is small, adorably decorated, with inside and outdoor seating. Tons of parking in a dirt/asphalt lot to the side of the place. We were immediately greeted upon walking in and were told to choose a spot. Service was excellent and quick, and very friendly. I ordered the hot chocolate, which arrived with a huge helping of whip cream. It was good! For breakfast I ordered the spinach and feta omelette. It was SO. FANTASTIC. Boyfriend ordered the jalapeño omelette (comes with pepper jack cheese). He said it was good but tbh I liked minevmore, so I stole a jalapeño and put it in my omelette and it was seriously on ANOTHER LEVEL. Highly highly recommend spinach and feta with some jalapeños added in. Probably one of the most delicious omelettes I've had, and I'm not a big fan of omelettes. Will definitely come back. read more

Been here multiple times. Food is great service is good. It's a diner with a mixture of different cultures. Highly recommended especially for groups with different tastes. We ordered a club sandwich and gyro with onion rings. We had to clean our own table to sit outside, as the food leftover from other diners is left outside for what appears to be awhile. This also attracts gnats, which you have to fight away from your food. We waited 30 minutes to get a club sandwich and gyro. I surmised this is because take out orders are completed before dining in orders. About 8 - 10 people came in after us to order take out and had their orders completed while we waited. There was no customer service, no one came to check on us, to let us know how much longer for our food, or to refill our drinks. The bread on the club sandwich was stale. The gyro was only so-so. A gnat flew into the ranch dip for our onion rings, which tasted frozen and needed something to swallow them down. So, I went inside to get another ranch and was told that the charge would be 54 cents. So, they don't charge for ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, salt or pepper, but the ranch will be 54 cents if a gnat, that lingers because no one cleans the place, flies into your condiment. Horrible. Patty melt is acceptable, my sweet potato fries were severely under-cooked. Girlfriend's taco salad was a disaster. Brown, wilted lettuce. Boiled egg (why?! in a taco salad) was bad (as in sour). The chicken was very under-cooked and in giant and small chunks, rather than nicely cut into strips. Looks like it was thrown together in 30 seconds. Not worth the money or the wait. We will pass on John's in the future. read more

Ah, John's Place! If you want an old fashioned great American burger, this is the place to get it! Hands down, THEE best burgers in the hi-desert! They've got some unique items on their menu that you might not find at other burger joints, like deep fried mushrooms, some Mexican food, and I think a few Greek dishes as well. My dad and I used to come here all the time for breakfast... I love their omelets and pancakes! Great service, and the owners are pretty great people too! Honestly, this place is probably the most popular in the high desert. But, I went to eat there a couple weeks ago after not having it for awhile because Ive moved, and johns place just isn't that great anymore. Given, the burger was tasty. It always has been But, it's over rated! I mean c'mon, it tastes good, but It's not mouthwatering. You used to be able to sit down and order but now you have to order up front, then sit down. I'm not trying to sound lazy, but because the establishment is small, this only creates havoc up front with little room to walk around. The guy who works as a cashier is a total jerk. I asked for a veggie omelet with some sausage cooked in and he looked at me like a damn idiot. "I suppose." Was his exact response. The girl that's worked there since I can remember looks like she's had the worst day ever. And it's been like that since I can also remember.. The burgers are more expensive, the cheese is fake and you have to basically stretch it to the ceiling to break(it's tasteless) The only positive is that I got to spend time with some of my family around some ordinary food. I've lived in Los Angeles and the south - so I know both amazing food and bad diner food. My transplant cousins treated us to John's Place. They sung its praises, but my parents and I were barely enthused. We went again as it was near our hotel. Our cousins had said it was economical, so what did we have to lose? It sucked. My parents had the bright idea of getting fake Mexican food after having some amazing El Taco Loco in the south bay. The chimichanga was just chicken and a smattering of vegetables, and the rice was just ... Not that good. I got a club sandwich and some fried sides. The sides had no seasonings, and the sandwich was something a tired soccer mom would make. Deli meats shouldn't be as thick as a magazine in my opinion. The waitress was just MEAN, the cheese cake was frozen garbage, and the food was too expensive. Nearly $50 dollars for garbage. Let's be honest. Unless you're a Marine heading to or from 29 Palms, there's not much reason for most of us to be in Yucca Valley, ever. As it was describe to me once, yuck, a valley. But if you should find yourself in the land of Joshua Trees, and are starving as we were, you could do a lot worse than John's Place. It's the prototypical southern California burger joint. There are, for whatever reason, so many of these places littered all over southern California. You know the type -- loud as a motorbike, but wouldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight -- oh wait, I'm reviewing burgers here. You know the type, grilled 1/4lb patties, shredded lettuce, 1000 island spread, and those ridiculously crisp (and relatively underrated) fries. Unlike many of the SoCal burger joints however, they don't season their fries with meat tenderizer. In fact, they don't season them at all -- not even salt. That's all on you. Like all these other places, they also serve a small selection of Mexican dishes as well as all the usual diner fare. Service is quick, and prices are cheap. Keep in mind though, if you go on a Sunday as we did. This is rural California up here, so the church crowd is unleashed at about 11:30 or so. It gets BUSY. Can't stomach waiting to eat down in Palm Springs? Then by all means hit up John's Place. read more
