After grocery shopping at Park to Shop, we found ourselves hungry. I have been meaning to try this spot for some time. It wasn't too busy as we arrived around lunchtime. We ordered 2 clay pots (meat variety and salted fish w. minced meat) and a noodle dish with roast duck at the kiosk. We also got roast pork on the side and paid for everything up front at the registers. As we waited for our food, they brought the house soup of the day - bitter melon. I liked it but my kids struggled with it. The noodle soup did not take too long and came a few minutes later. The clay pots took some time at around 30 mins. Both were piping hot but much appreciated as the tables started to fill up around us. The rice was nicely crusted on the bottom which lended a nice texture change from the rest of the pot. All the food was filling and my daughter and I had half of our clay pots still available for my husband. The food was decent. I liked how the crispy the rice gets at the bottom of the clay pot. We got the one with Chinese sausage and minced pork - I liked the flavor but it doesn't seem too worth it for the price. The service wasn't the best. They barely spoke English there, which wasn't the problem. However, I went up to grab my food and asked if this was mine. They nodded yes and then I was confused since the dish looked wrong. Then a random customer went up to our table and stuck her head so close to our food. Then just walked away without saying a word. I think she assumed we took her food on purpose and the workers kept looking at us. It was a very uncomfortable experience. The ambiance isn't bad. You order, bring the ticket to the cashier in the front of the grocery store to pay and bring it back to the restaurant. There's quite a few tables and you can wander the grocery store or bakery nearby to spend the time. Boy got pork spare rib, Chinese sausage and roast pork claypot rice. I'm not a fan of the Chinese sausage because it has that type of cooking wine or alcohol taste I'm not a fan of. I got bbq pork and duck. The duck pieces weren't particularly meaty and the bbq pork wasn't tender. However, I really enjoyed the soup appetizer and the crunchy rice bits with the soy sauce? Delicious. I had my second delightful experience with claypot rice! They offered complimentary soup, which was a nice touch. The dish was cooked perfectly, and the lady serving was incredibly friendly. She even offered extra soup, although it wasn't needed since the claypot was already filled with plenty of rice and meat. The crispy bottom was especially delicious. Overall, I rate it a perfect 10/10! fyi if you're wondering where's the soy sauce it's in the tea pots you may need to go to a different table to borrow. I love Jonny Claypot Rice! It's a hole-in-the-wall food stall located within the Park to Shop grocery store on Canal and they serve some delicious claypot rice with delicious crisped rice at the bottom of the pot, done right! Three of us stopped in to give this place a try with a plan to share our dishes, since this would be the first stop of a Chinatown food tour we were doing with our friend from out of town. There were plenty of menus with pictures by food stall that make for easy ordering. We ordered: * claypot rice with bbq pork and fried pork (comes with complimentary soup of the day) * side of gai lan We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. I am not 100% of their exact hours, but I know on weeknights their last call for dinner is around 6:30pm. Trust me, my husband and I tried to eat here several times before. We would drive into Chinatown after work and stop in, to be told that were either already closed or had already served their last customers. So a tip for folks wanting to grab some claypot for dinner, come EARLY! We played it safe and came on a Sunday afternoon :) and we were so glad to finally be able to try it. The rice was so flavorful and it's really a no frills place. It's straightforward, you order at the stall and sit down at any available tables. It's self-serve / "fast casual" and oh so incredibly good. I think about going back to this spot almost weekly. Their soup of the day was very flavorful and although I can't put a name to the ingredients in it (maybe someone on the internet / Yelp Community knows), it was so comforting and served in those styrofoam take-out bowls that have such nostalgia for me when eating lunch in Chinatown as a kid. My only tip here is to check the hours and/or come early on a weeknight (no later than 6pm), since their opening hours might change. Plus, you can pick up any groceries on your way out and there are no concerns with parking (for the drivers out there). While it might be harder to get to via public transportation, there are plenty of parking spots in their lot and this store is a lot less crowded than the others right in the heart of Chinatown. I was excited to try this place because I saw it on Yelp. It's definitely a very lowkey place - it's a stall in the Park to Shop on Canal Street (not to be confused with the other 2 Park to Shops in the area lol). There's a parking lot for car folks, but I just walked over from the Red Line. They mostly speak Chinese, but there are photos of the different claypot rices on the menu. You might have some trouble (I did, but a nice customer translated for me) if you pick one where you can choose a few toppings. I got the bbq pork (chashu) and roast duck toppings. They estimated it would take 15 minutes, but it took longer. I was hoping for rich umami flavors, but found the dish to be bland. Perhaps I was supposed to add soy sauce; adding sriracha helped. Wow! Cook to order clay pot rice! Delicious and easy on the wallet. You do have to allow the cooking time. Rice is served in the clay pot and so stays warm the whole dining experience. My daughter got the preserved bacon and sausage clay pot. I actually got the noodle - it has fermented bamboo shoots, yard long beans, and mustard greens. The flavor is quite "unique".
