Joseph's is a must! Family owned and they treat their customers as if you're family. Thus making you want to come have dinner at their house every week. The food is excellent !! I'm not into spicy food and I get it my way every time.They aim to please. Pizza's are my daughter's favorite. "Joseph's canzone" is one thing we never leave without. We had take out, the woman who took my order on the phone was very helpful and nice! We got a Sicilian pizza - HUGE! We ate 2 pieces each and we're totally stuffed. We both have huge appetites but this pizza is massive and thick. The garlic butter is so good. However the best part was the red velvet cake!! It was really great and we had a cannoli as well - YUM! Decided to give Joseph's another shot. Their food is too good not to. Boy, am I glad I did! I had friends in from out of town and they wanted to meet me for lunch on my lunch break on their way back. Joseph's is 5 minutes from my place of employment so I told them to meet me there. It was a completely different experience this time! Our waiter was extremely attentive and prompt. We had 2 children with us who decided to get the "build your own pizza". This time it was brought out as soon as it was ordered. Meaning, it was cooked and ready by the time the adult's food was ready to come out. We didn't have to ask for a single thing. When we asked for our checks we had them within 5 mins. We ate here after leaving the Jacksonville zoo. It was only a couple miles away and had good happy hour specials on wings and pizza slices. The pizza was burnt and they ran out of slices so they couldn't replace them. We had ordered wings, a sub, a salad with garlic bread so we still got full. Now I have been going to Joseph's for many years now. Even thou I haven't been in a couple now. I used to eat here a lot for lunch and it was good then. Tonight I had a hankering for pizza and really didn't feel like driving all the way to Mandarin so. I putted down the road to this staple of almost downtown. It is on the outskirts of downtown out by the river. The place hasn't changed in maybe 20 years. The same paneling on the walls and the 1960's light fixtures. You know if it ain't broke don't fix it. The lights still work like most everything built back then when I was. I went with a Joseph's Special no olives and some sausage stuffed mushrooms. The mushrooms were good nothing real special just plan tasty. Now the pizza was a heavy weight. I ate all I could and still took home more then half a pie. It still weighs about 4-5lbs if I had to guess. I really enjoyed it with nice fresh toppings and plenty of them too. I will be back sooner then later that's for sure. read more

Alright so, a couple of co-workers and I have been itching to try this place when we've passed by it a few times. We went during the lunch hour and were greeted in a friendly and prompt manner when we came in. We placed to-go orders, which were ready very quickly. The food: I ordered the homemade minestrone soup ($4) and the cannoli ($4) with chocolate chips. The soup came with Parmesan cheese on the side and some buttered garlic bread. The bread was good as expected, the soup left a bit to be desired. It had all the usual suspects; veggies, beans, a somewhat zesty base. It didn't taste like it was fully finished "stewing" because the broth was a bit lacking (watery) for my taste. It also had long egg noodles, which was not bad but a texture I wasn't expecting. As for the the cannoli, I am a firm supporter of cinnamon in just about anything, but good heavens! The cannoli cream was brown! The ricotta (if there was ricotta in there) was swallowed by cinnamon and some other unidentified ingredient (possibly an extract or liquor?) to the point that it did not identify as a cannoli in my mouth. The cream was thin, more like a heavy whipped cream than the thick ricotta filling I am used to. The shell at least, was nice and crisp & well loaded on the sides with chocolate chips. My friend ordered Joseph's Calzone ($8.5). On this particular calzone, they do not allow substitutions or additions, which to me implies it is either pre-made and they cannot physically add more ingredients without messing up the dough or they simply get annoyed when customers want to customize orders (which I agree can get extensive). The calzone did not taste how we would normally describe a calzone. It had a strange texture between the ingredients. The dough was slightly mushy on the inside and the dough itself did not have that satisfying crispness on the outside that we are used to (I.e. at Mellow Mushroom or Moon River). It was more like a thicker pizza crust instead of a calzone. The meat sauce that came with it (you get the option of that or marinara) was unfortunately not any better. It did not taste fresh or "homemade" and smelled distinctly like a canned childhood ravioli product. The other friend I was with wanted to order the Stuffed Mushroom appetizer, but was shot down when she asked for it with out the sausage (doesn't eat pork). She was NOT offered any similar option or it to be made fresh without the pork. She chose not to order anything else. So for me the two stars is quite generous. Although the place seems inviting and has a renowned reputation, I don't get it. I kind of feel like we were being punked. Or perhaps there is a new kitchen staff? I was all about Joseph's until this past week. The food is usually great; never really had any issues Until recently....and this completely rubbed me the wrong way. I ordered a large pizza on my way to work. I was running late so I figured I grab the pie and eat it as I was changing into my uniform. That's exactly what I did. I started to eat and the pizza was good as always.....until my second slice....there was a long string of hair going through he slice I was about to bite into. [Mind you, Im a mixed black person so it's no way it could have been my hair]. I was disgusted. I looked at the other slices, particularly the one next to where I had just grabbed my current slice from...and sure enough the hair was on that one too, and had been cut as the pizza was sliced. I was heartbroken....I hadn't eaten all day. Thinking nothing of it...I tossed the pizza; and figured I'd call about it once I got into my unit...and was ready to begin work. So I call; and the lady told me because of the time it was, the cooks had already shut things down and I needed to call for a manager tomorrow...so that's what I did. When I called and spoke to a manager, [Danielle May have been her name Im not 100% certain]....she told me the only way they could help me...was if I brought the pizza back...or If i had a picture! How fucking insulting is that! I explained that the pizza was a day old, and in the garbage....so for me to get a picture was practically impossible. She was firm and made no attempt to accommodate me whatsoever. I was BEYOND insulted...I've referred so many people to this place, and my colleagues eat here because of me. Needless to say....I won't be eating here anymore and neither will anybody I referred. Customer service is KING and when you don't take care of your customers.... word travels. To basically insinuate that I was lying, and not offer me a remake is an awful way to represent any establishment....so Im currently looking for a new go-to pizza spot!! read more

I grew up going to Joseph's Pizza. A pizza place is a very unassuming area of North Main Street. My family always associated it with a local and family run place that offers great pizza. We enjoy the pizza with some premium toppings like artichoke hearts, fresh tomatoes and garlic and plenty of Italian sausage. The toppings are always generous and the pizza delicious. The garlic rolls and fresh bakery items along with some delectable canolis are amazing as well. We have tried several of the Italian dinners, and they are also dependably good, but your best off sticking with a nice sandwich, calzone, or pizza here. Vegetarian review: I absolutely love this place. The first time I ate here I got the veggie lasagna and it was incredible. There is nothing better than eating lasagna and finding an entire bay leaf in your food. I have been eating here almost weekly for a couple of years now. We have had the pizza, which is incredible. Wow...this place is amazing. I recommend the Joseph Calzone. It is pure heaven. It takes about 30 minutes to cook as they are all made to order and you can build your own calzone. The salads are okay. The pizza is killer but a bit pricey. In terms of service, they have always greeted upon entry and seated right away. They have an awesome happy hour with 1/2 off appetizers. Definitely recommend the Bruschetta as it is outstanding! You can even call in your order and then go pick it up. read more

I have to say this is my favorite pizza place in all of Jacksonville. The food is great, the service is great, but its the atmosphere that makes it so special! Like others have said, if you were to drive by and not know what's inside, you'd probably pass it by. When you walk in, you notice the old photos on the wall an old newspaper clipping of the owner/founder. Then you see the display case of traditional Italian desserts. The waitresses have always been nice and have a "good people" feel about them. They make you feel welcome. The menu has so much to offer, and now even features gluten free pasta and crust made to order!! I was so surprised to see it available on their menu, since they've been around for what seems like forever, serving made from scratch Italian! The pizza crust is delicious! This is our 3rd or 4th time ordering a Joseph Special since reopening after the fire. I have to say, we are still not satisfied. I don't know if they had to install a new oven or not but the one they are using is not cooking the pizza through. We asked that our pizza be cooked well done (even explained our past few visit) the sweet girl stated that she would make sure it was cooked as requested. It was not! The pizza dough was still "doughy" in the middle and the ingredients were cold which made it a cold soggy pizza. I have had to put it in the oven for about 20 minutes every time. I wish they would go back to the way it use to be. I really don't want to give up because I've been dining there since I was young. read more

Best pizza in Jacksonville. No deliveries, but do take orders over the phone. They also have nicely stuffed tasty calzones. The dinning area is nothing fency and could use cleaner tables, but can't beat the menu. They also have a second location in Atlantic Beach area, smaller but with a nicer dinning area in my opinion. Very poor lunch service. Since the renovations, seems as if the quality has gone down. No vegetarian pizza offerings by the slice. Asked if one could be made and was told no. Ordered only pizza i could eat and was cold and falling apart. Crust seemed old. Server was slow and did not check on us at all, had to flag her down to bring food, refills and check. Informed management but brushed off and was advised to call ahead and order "special pizza" next time. Won't be returning. read more

Ok, sometimes you find a restaurant that makes you wanna just jump for joy and yell "Halelujah!". I did that once at a burger joint when the most perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside piece of meat on the tastiest bun met my tongue. I scared many little children that day and caused the pacemaker of the 85 year old next to me to stop. Well, the same thing happened to me when I had a pizza here at Josephs. The pizza was so good that it brought a tear of joy to my eyes. I asked myself how can someone make a pizza so perfect. As I wiped my eyes and assured the others at my table that I was ok, I asked myself why I have even bothered wasting my time eating at the chain restaurants when there are places like Joseph's to get my caloric intake at. I have been here a few times now to eat and I always go away with a smile on my face and utter satisfaction in my belly. Be it the homemade dressings on the salads, the hearty entrees or that amazing pizza, you cant go wrong here. They really go out of their way to ensure that you leave here happy. I dined here with my boyfriend for the first time on a date. I've passed by Joseph's plenty of times because I live in the area. If you are hungry, the wait for pizza is long but well worth it. So you might want to order an appetizer or hold out for that good pizza! They surely don't skimp on the size of the pizza, the freshness of the ingredients, and how much toppings they give you. Everyone was friendly, our waitress was great, the place was clean, and I liked the look of the place. If definitely recommend. The only thing I didn't like was I felt if you're spending money on an appetizer they could have at least given a starter dip. They charge extra 2 for that. read more

Having read a few decent reviews-one that actually mentioned the baked ziti-I was hoping for a really good experience here today. Although there are some rather unflattering reviews about Joseph's I was hoping for my visit to be exemplary. . . Arriving at about 4:50 pm, I saw that the place was fairly quiet and could not have been more than 25% full. I asked for two slices of pizza and an iced tea. The tea came quickly. The two slices of pizza came FORTY MINUTES later. That's right, 40 minutes later. And. . .both of the slices were overcooked and stale looking. There is simply not any good reason for a pizza place to take FORTY minutes to serve me two overcooked, stale slices of pizza. The manager was kind enough to give me an entree to take home for later, as I told her that that had been my intention (although I did not ask for her to give it to me for free). I loved baked ziti, so that's what I ordered. It was the most bland, average, lackluster baked ziti I have ever eaten in my life. Someone I know brought baked ziti to a potluck I attended in San Francisco before I moved here and his was much better. He's a singer/songwriter and works at Apple computer. He does NOT cook for a living. That's right, a weekend warrior musician, and software engineer tech-head from Silicon Valley makes better baked ziti than this Italian restaurant. I have not yet been to Italy, but I am quite certain that the entire country of Italy would take umbrage at being in any way associated with the food I was served at this establishment today. The handful of servers and the manager that I spoke with today were really nice, and seemed to care about me and my experience in the restaurant. (That's the reason that I am giving two stars and not one.) From my experience today, this place has one major issue: the food is far below average. The food is not good. I had the Eggplant Parmesan, which had the eggplant on the bottom and spaghetti piled on top, making a soupy mess. Also the sauce had tons of nutmeg, just gross. Fantastic pizza and great calzones. The wait staff was very attentive, and kept my drink filled. ( I drink a lot, and most waiters can not keep up with me.) The pizza was just right. This is the third time I have been there, and the pizza has been great every time. My fiancé got a calzone, and he loved it. The dipping sauce was spicy, but good. We drove down from Georgia because I loved their pasta with white clam sauce. When told the item was no longer available due to slow request. I was disappointed but accepted a recommended substitute of pasta and shrimp. I was disappointed again. My pasta was hard in places and not very tasty. My wife was very satisfied with her pasta however. We had appetizer of fried calamari which was very good, Garlic bread served with our meal was also very good. I have been coming here ever so often for around sixty years and was saddened when the fire shut them down for almost a year. The new place is more modern but has lost it's warmth and charm for me plus noise level is very high. Not good for tired old ears. We will not make a special trim to dine here again but will try it out if ever caught in Jax without plans. Sigh........... Our lose. read more

I am rating this night because of the pizza. We had the Joseph's special. Crust was well done and flavorful. We also had a side of meatballs and fried eggplant. The eggplant was a bit salty, and I like lots of salt. The meatball, well that was 1 star. More like a large clump of meat. I could not detect and flavors or different meats. Will definitely pass on the meatballs. People around us had lots of pasta dishes and appeared to get large portions. read more
