We took our daughter here for lunch on a Saturday. There are several pubs and taverns in the Brunswick area, and I settled on this one just because it is named after local Civil War hero and Maine governor Joshua Chamberlain. Downtown Brunswick is tough on parking. After driving around a bit, I dropped my wife off out front, and then landed a space across the street with a quick u-turn when traffic was unexpectedly quiet for a moment. But traffic stopped to allow my daughter and I to cross the street even when they had the green light. That wouldn't have happened in Florida. I love being back home in Maine. It was a little quiet in the restaurant, though they had a large group assembling towards the back. Our server was great and the meal was fairly quick getting to us. My wife and I had the Reuben and our daughter had her usual burger, all of us with fries. It was all good. Restaurant prices being what they are nowadays, you can expect to pay at least $20 a person, even for lunch - more if you have real drinks (we had ice water). We took half of our sandwiches home, so that makes the cost less mortifying. I don't know that we will go back when we take our girl to lunch again, because even though it was all fine, it didn't knock our socks off, a necessity when you think of all the choices there are in the area. But I would recommend it to a friend if asked about it. read more

Restaurant was okay. Friendly and attentive, really loud inside, it's hard to have a conversation. We shared a crabmeat stuffed mushroom app, it was meh. BF had the sirloin steak, bland, flavorless and had to use a ton of steak sauce, although steak was perfectly cooked, medium. He thought that the carrots that came with the dish, tasted like plastic. I had the primavera pasta with shrimp, it was okay, plain, added Parmesan to give it some kind it life but the garlic bread was good. Probably not going back. read more

Downtown Brunswick pub located on Main Street, the ambiance is typical pub decor with games on the TVs over the bar. The service is good and the food is surprisingly delicious, but not worth the cost. My table of 2 had 2 burgers with fries and soft drinks, yet the tab out the door was still $55. read more

What a nice spot! We were lucky to come across this place after spending a day at the local college. First off, the parking is free and there is plenty of it....right out front. Upon entry, you immediately get the college town bar vibe. along with a Cape Cod feel, too.....tons of room inside with a nice bar in the center! We were seated and immediately asked if we wanted to order a drink. From there, things just took off! We had 5-star service from the drinks to the apps to the main course! On time and very tasty! We had a burger, fish sandwich and some mozzarella sticks for an app! Again, service was great and the food was awesome! I will definitely make it back here sometime soon! Joshuas from the outside looks like fine dining, but then inside has a bar like atmosphere. The restaurant has better food than you would find at a college bar. I ordered the broiled fish in a butter sauce. A local commented that I must be from out of town since I ordered seafood. However, I was glad I did. Fantastic fresh picked lobster rolls! Service was great and hubby had a great Rueben with Lone Pine IPA. But the lobster rolls was the star. Joshua's is an old school pub with hardwood floors and well worn hand crafted tables--We arrived early on a Friday afternoon.. the weather was nice enough that that there were still hardy souls at the outdoor tables soaking up the October sunshine..we chose a corner table inside the front window and enjoyed cocktails as the casually dressed regulars filled the bar at the rear ..It felt a bit like a scene from Cheers. The cocktails are outstanding-- probably the best Bloody Mary in Maine, and the Martini ( straight up with 3 olives) was smooth and just right. Of course we tried the crispy fried green beans appetizer -- a must because they are close to addictive. The generously sized " build your own "burger was huge, overflowing with all the goodies.. served with lots perfect, crunchy curly fries. The menu has something for everyone.. I ordered a Greek salad and the crab cakes appetizer.. again, generous and delicious.. And a positive word about the prompt, cheerful service--it makes a difference. Clean, cool and comfortable inside on a steamy August day. We had originally planned to have Indian food but that restaurant was short-staffed and had take-out only. I'm glad we decided to come here. When we saw the menu on the window I was infatuated with the idea of a Reuben sandwich only instead of bread (I'm gluten-free) I wanted it on their potato skins (an offered appetizer). Our server was so sweet and accommodating she said they'd make it work for me and they really did! I was not charged extra, either. They simply subbed the bread and fries with the skins. Second night in Maine, and our first taste of Maine seafood was "typical tourist" food in Portland, we decided that in Brunswick that food might be a bit more traditionally prepared. So we checked the ratings and reviews and came to Joshua's on Maine St in Brunswick. You could not ask for a more quintessential dining room. Old style hardwood floors and tavern style bar. Lovely inside and friendly staff to meet us. The menu reflects some changes post-pandemic, but there were several seafood choices The best non-fried seafood option appeared to be the sampler platter including shrimp, scallops, lobster, and haddock baked in garlic butter and served with a starch and a vegetable. The plate presentation was very nice and appealing at first. What was billed as a full pound of seafood must have been weighed and shriveled in the cooking. There were 3 medium shrimp, 3 divers scallops, a 4 inch fillet if haddock about 3/4 inch thick, and 2 pieces of lobster tail. Definitely a sampler platter. The garlic butter gave all of the seafood a similar flavor so the only aspect of difference in the fish was texture. The lobster was chewy, the haddock was flaky, the scallops were soft with a slight chew, and the shrimp were simple and tender. To remind our tastebuds of our Southern home, we asked for some Old Bay seasonings to flavor our fish. All they had was some Old Bay knockoff and it helped. But not quite enough. I know true Northern gourmands may be laughing at this post. That's okay, live and let live, but could you try some garnishes chives? read more

Awesome spring evening dinner on the sidewalk outside Joshua's. What a fantastic downtown view of Brunswick while having a drinks and dinner. The waitress was very accommodating and offered suggestions for my wife's gluten free diet. I had the meat lovers pizza and was not disappointed...it was terrific. My wife had the sirloin from Pineland Farms which is locally raised beef. We both left with leftovers for a big lunch for tomorrow. Great historic atmosphere inside as well.. Beautiful afternoon in Brunswick and a great day to sit outside at Joshua's. We were so hungry the feee popcorn was great! We ordered a burger which was really good. The lobster roll with onion rings was great lots of lobster not too much mayo. The scallops and Caesar salad was delicious and big enough for 2 meals. The warm spinach salad with bacon and chicken was the worth a trip back. Only issue was when the bill came and we were charged 7.00 for a cup of coffee.. when we questioned it the answer was that is what it cost and we charge for cream .... when we asked the waiter to please check on it as that seemed unreasonable he did come back and say it was a computer error. My husband and I were on vacay in Brunswick for Labor Day weekend Sept. 2019. And we stopped here for dinner 9/29. We're from Boston, and whenever I visit the Maine coast, I always crave lobster, and this place did not disappoint! For appetizers, both he and I ordered the Lobster Stew, as they would call it (For us, it was like a lobster bisque), very good either way. For our entrees, I got a surf & turf, and the hub got a lobster dinner. Here I am expecting that it was just a dinky lobster tail and a small cut of meat, but NO...it was a WHOLE lobster, and a very good size piece of sirloin. Sirloin was cooked fantastic, the way I ordered it, which was medium-rare. Nice and charcoaled on the outside, good and red on the inside. Lobsters were cooked to absolute PERFECTION! Basically flaked off the shell and full of flavor. Ordered the fries with my surf & turf. Fries didn't even need any ketchup or any other condiments with it, that's how good it was! Yes, I'm not going to lie, it was a bit pricey. However, it's definitely worth it. And you get what you pay for! Fabulous service too. Can't remember our server's name, but she was great! If we ever vacation in the Brunswick area, I'm pretty sure this will be the one place we will be frequenting every time. Absolutely loved the decor - it had a really cool old and authentic vibe. The chairs were beautiful with the work on the back (not super comfortable but definitely antique). Menu has a lot of seafood options, as you would expect in the area. There were specials but we never saw the board until we had ordered. Busy but not packed on a very hot Saturday. There's outdoor seating too which looked nice but had limited seating at lunch so we sat inside and enjoyed the ambiance. For food we tried the seafood chowder. Packed with seafood. I found it pretty bland and had to add a lot of pepper but if you are more interested in getting the most seafood for your buck rather than the broth than this is the chowder for you. I went with a crab roll for my main meal. Very reasonably priced. Jam packed with crab with tasty seasoning on the top. You can get fries or rice or a baked potato. I went with the baked potato. My dining companion got the dill baked haddock. The haddock was lovely but I didn't find much of a dill taste. I got the sangria and it was very good and refreshing. They have a good beer list. All in all, prices were good for the amount of food and it was a nice place to dine in. I saw many families coming in and out. I'd stop in again. read more

Joshua's Tavern certainly caters to the tourist crowd here to visit the sites pertaining to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Many menu items are named after him, battles he fought in, or civil war things in general. For a girl like me who is obsessed with JLC, I couldn't pass up this restaurant. It's a great location, very spacious with plenty of seating. The menu is extensive and has a variety of foods to cater to all. I had the Chamberlain Burger (I mean how could I not?!) And my husband had the Lobster Roll. The food was good, definitely what you'd expect from a tourist-y spot such as this, and the service was fine. This is an average restaurant, with average food and service, but a MUST visit for the JLC fanatic. read more
