    Vegetarian Dumplings
    Nishalina B.

Shrimps balls were nice and crispy; good flavor. Green onion pancakes did not have enough flavor; wouldn't get it again. Veggie dumpling noodle soup was disappointing. The veggie dumplings were good of course but the veggie broth had no flavor; I had to add a lot of chili oil and soy sauce. Wouldn't order this again. Tofu chow fun with black bean sauce was good but the veggies were chopped too big.

It's really nice going on Election Day, Tuesday during lunch - absolutely no lines and no rush. There are still quite a few of people dining with family. The food was fresh and hot, even though it came out super fast. We really enjoyed our food, especially the XLB - it has a thicker skins than I'm used to but it helped it from braking and does not feel heavy.

My BESTIE and I popped in here before our big event tonight! Imagine walking in here wearing all white, lmao!!! We decided to come to this location instead of downtown because parking is much easier here, although it does get packed. We walked in and were sat right away at a table. The tables are very close to each other. Not just my opinion, but I also overheard the table behind me day it... who's kids just happened to be sitting behind me and kept bumping their chair my chair. No biggie, though. I totally didn't mind. When our server came to our table, we were ready to order. We started with a cucumber salad to share, 2 orders of the pork dumplings(1 for each of us), and we each ordered a New Glory Gummy Worms (a hazy beer.) The beer was served from a 16 ounce can and we were brought frozen 12 ounce glasses which I thought was a nice touch. While waiting for our food to arrive, we were laughing at ourselves as we were trying to make a barrier against our clothes with napkins since we were wearing white... and we all know what happens when you wear white! We also noticed that we arrived just in time (about 4:30) because next thing you know, there was a line at the door. The cucumber salad arrived first. It has smashed Persian cucumbers with a citrus chili vinaigrette, garnished with cilantro and sesame seeds. It was so refreshing! I love the crunchy texture! Then, when our pork dumplings arrived, we decided we wanted chicken chowmein and the peking spare ribs. This chicken chowmein was so good, it tasted like it had a char flavor to it. The peking spare ribs were soooo tender! They were coated in a glossy, tangy, sweet red sauce. Perfect tenderness!!! Next thing you know, there was no way we were going to get to our 2nd order of dumplings, lmao! As we were close to finishing, we decided we wanted to take home our food and ordered one more set of dumplings and split the rest of the food between us. My BESTIE wanted a split bill and even they forgot to split it, she brought it to our servers attention... and she reminded him that we were each buying a jar of their chili oil... and this is where it got a little weird... After he dropped off the split bill, he walked over to the kitchen and said something to a fellow coworker and nodded towards us... and then she looked over at us. It felt awkward after we were having such a good time. I'm not sure if splitting the bill was the issue, or maybe it was the amount of boxes we needed since we were splitting all the food, but it left us feeling uncomfortable. Service was great up until that point. The food was delicious! ... maybe I'll start bringing my own Tupperware, lol.

I've tried the second location in midtown and it's just as good! The interior inside the midtown location is better and newer though which was expected. Love how this place reminds me of Din tai fung but in 916 area. Full house when we went but luckily we had the last available table!

Mmmm I'd come here again and again. Great flavorful food. Fast service and friendly. It was packed but not too noisy which I liked. The chicken garlic noodles wereeee soooo gooood. heavy on carbs so come on cheat day but worth the extra time at the gym. I think it all tasted better with some wine too lol

Got six dishes from Journey to the Dumpling last night. Our two must have dishes are beef roll and mushrooms baos. The beef roll is my absolute favorite. The thinly sliced beef that's slowly shimmered in the well blended and fragrance Chinese spices is wrapped with crunchy thinly sliced cucumbers, red onions, scallions and cilantro by a wrap, that's both soft and crispy, in a roll. Crispy, tender, crunchy, refreshing, sweet and savory dish made me experienced the full sensory experience: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. The mushroom baos are very flavorful because we're enjoying the umami flavor from the mixtures of chopped oyster, white and shiitake mushrooms and onions. The baos are made to look like mushroom tops and the doughs are slightly on the sweet side. It enticed our appetite and enjoyment. Honey walnut shrimp tasted silkily delicious. Shrimp dumplings with pork and mushrooms, chow mein with steamed tofu and Vegan Singapore noodles were good too. I like the curry-flavored rice noodles used in the Singapore noodles a bit more because the curry takes the noodles to another levels. We enjoyed all our dishes.

Amazing meal, very tasty. Service was great- there was some miscommunication in which meats but they were kind and offered to swap. Very easy and no line. Clean and sweet space.

We've been here a few times before and after moving to Elk Grove and it was good overall. The parking lot had enough spaces and this restaurant can be crowded at times. The waitresses we had for all of our visits were nice and helpful. The place was clean and had bright lighting. We've ordered the Chicken & Cilantro Xiao Long Bao, Pork Xiao Long Bao, Shrimp, Pork, & Mushroom Dumpling, Beef Noodle Soup, Green Beans (garlic as well as black bean), Chicken Fried Rice, Steak Fried Rice, Wonton in Chili Oil, Chicken Chow Mein, Eggplant without the flounder, Potstickers, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. In my opinion, the Pork Xiao Long Bao was the better of the two we tried and I would order that again. The Green Beans with garlic was good, the Beef Noodle Soup was not bad, the Chicken Fried Rice and Steak Fried Rice were good especially with that charred tasted, and the Honey Walnut Shrimp was pretty good. Everything else I listed was okay and I would try something else on the menu. There's a lot of choices on the menu and we will be back to try everything else that sounds good. The food is good overall and worth checking out if you want some Chinese food.

Journey to the Dumpling had always been my go-to for Xiao Long Baos ever since they opened, but these last few years, it has been a huge disappointment. The XLBs has a much thicker skin now and it's just not as good as it used to be.

I'm giving this place 4 stars overall. Most of the food was really good, but the beef buns were disappointing. The dumplings tasted fresh, and the green beans were solid--comparable to other Chinese restaurants. However, the beef buns were not what I expected at all. The menu photo shows soft bao buns with what looks like BBQ-style filling, but what came out was more like dense, compressed meat similar to soup dumpling filling. It didn't match the description or the picture, which was a letdown. Because of that, I had to drop a star. On the positive side, our waiter was attentive and prompt, which made the experience better. One thing to note--the bathroom could use more frequent cleaning. It seemed like it might only get attention at closing. Overall, still a good spot, just hope they improve the beef buns and upkeep.

Went for dinner this evening - wow - long waits but they seem to keep the tables turning - we had about a 20 min wait - checked in on the Yelp app and it was a good process - we were taken to a booth. We ordered pork soup dumplings, bbq pork, chicken chow mein, rice and bao buns - all was delicious- they give you huge portions so we have plenty to take with us and we were stuffed - the place was packed and kinda loud but a fun atmosphere- we liked that they had the basket ball games on as we were hoping to watch while we were there - everyone was watching the playoffs - all in all - we will be back and highly recommend!!

I love coming here. We eat here a lot and they are the best Chinese place in Elk Grove. They are getting so big now. They opened their place downtown I think 2 years now and now they are getting one in Folsom to. This one is in a large strip mall where Target is located. Lots of parking but it's always packed here since all the food is on this end. Still found a good spot. The place had a lot of people eating already even just around 5PM. Greeted by the front girl and seated right away . No reservations here, I think. It's a good size place but they get pretty full soon. I got the wonton without noodles which is my favorite and I almost always get it when I am here. Got the regular chow mien this time the Hong Long style wasn't that good last time . Chicken this time . I liked it but my wife doesn't eat the meat in the chow mien when we get it no matter what protein we add. She just likes the noodles. Felt like shrimp so we got the walnut shrimp and it was fabulous and fresh. Loved it. The wife wanted the spicy green beans. She likes the flavor of it even though both of us don't do spice that much. It was very flavorful and yummy. We will be back again since we really enjoy this place and you can count on the consistency of their cooking.

Visited Journey to the Dumpling after getting back from a business trip. This Elk Grove spot is at a great location in a shopping plaza with plenty of parking. Arrived in the afternoon a bit early before their 4pm opening and I actually tried to open the door while it was locked to go in Lol The staff inside were probably trippin' thinking "wtf is this dude doing trying to break in, must be hungry" LMAO Well yea I was hella hungry as I haven't ate all day! Not a big crowd yet so plenty of clean, open tables. Stainless steel cup was cool too, wish more places have it. Ordering was easy and quick. Ordered beef chow fun with black bean sauce, salt and pepper wings, and har gow. They were all delicious! Got the sweet tarts for dessert and it was so good. Ordered hot green tea also but it was very bland and wasn't anything to rave about. I've also been once to the downtown Sacramento location last year during the Christmas holiday for my birthday with a date (we had our falling out soon a few days after and she hates me now yelp shhh) :( Lol It was a nice, positive experience at both locations. The downtown Sac visit was more memorable for obvious reasons Lol The staff is courteous and efficient. Will visit again soon.

What is your health department rating now? September 2024?

Hello Judy! We have passed our health department inspection.

If we have an eating peanut type of allergy do they use peanut oil or peanuts in their pork dumplings, mushroom buns? Or green beans? FYI we ate there and none of these…

Actually I don't know but I think it would be best to avoid it. Peanut oil or peanut products are present in much of Asian cooking.

What is the starting party size for charging gratuity?

Hello! Any parties larger than 4 so 5 or more will include 18% gratuity.

I tried emailing about catering, but your email is not valid. Is it email@journeytothedumpling? It doesn't work.

Can I make a reservation tomorrow at 5:30pm?

Have to utilize the waitlist via Yelp the day of, which works great. If you have a large party you may want to call and see if the they will allow a traditional reservation.

Do you have any gluten free options?

I am not certain, but I do know they have vegetarian options

Do you accommodate private dining? I'm trying to plan a rehearsal dinner.

They make reservations for large parties but don't host private dining. The dining area is very packed. To the point that one has to circle around the entire restaurant in order to make it out the door.

I place request on waitlist but I cannot see option for 5 guests? For today?

Hello! Unfortunately, with a party of 5, your wait time must be customized by the host instead of using the automated Yelp waitlist feature. However, if you don’t mind the inaccurate wait time estimated by Yelp, feel free to enter a party of 4 and…

    Do you offer catering?

Hello Mai! We do offer limited party trays. Feel free to email us at email@journeytothedumpling for more details and a price list!

    Are you guys dog friendly?

Hi there! We accept service dogs indoor and otherwise, are more than happy to serve you guys outdoor! However, we do not currently have heat warmers.

Besides the Toast Take Out app (delivery is always unavailable), do you offer any other forms for delivery?

Hello Paula! We partner with Grabull for delivery. However, we do turn off Grabull when we need to prioritize dine in guests. Hope this helps!

Do you have a new phone number, I am trying to call an order in and your number says not in service?

Hi Naomi! Did you try 916-509-9556? We haven’t changed our number.

Hello,When will delivery be available again?

Hello Evelyn! We currenlty offer delivery through a third party, Grabull!

Yes we will be! Regular business hours, 11-3, 4-8:30pm!

What gluten free options, if any, are available?

Hi there! We are limited but we do have a few gluten free items! Any of our sautéed vegetables garlic style or our Singapore Noodles. You can also enjoy our noodle soup with chow fun or vermicelli noodles. We don't carry gluten free soy sauce in…

Are your Grabull prices different from your regular prices? It looks like a lot of your menu items are marked up on there.

Hello! Grabull is a third party whose rates are separate from ours. We offer them as an option for those who need delivery. However, if you plan to pick up your order, I highly recommend using Toast, which we manage ourselves and prices are always…

    Do you take reservations?

Hello! We don’t take reservations but we do have “call ahead seating” for parties of 8 or more!

Will delivery or online ordering be offered soon?

Right now, we are partnered with Grabull for delivery! Online ordering will also be set up soon!

They are always so very busy, so don't expect customer service there, just great food. Licious has the exact opposite, great service and okay food. We ordered the following: Szechuan green beans- cooked perfectly with a crunch still. Lacked flavor- not spicy. Fish and tofu clay pot- the fish tasted sweet, oddly. The fried tofu was perfect. Juicy and soft, Beef short ribs skillet- very fatty. You are paying for fat. Maybe it was a bad day. Tiger prawns with pumpkin- it is battered with salted egg, but it's not that salty. I wish it was saltier because I love salted egg. Battered and fried perfectly!!! The Tiger prawns are HUGE!!!!!! I've never eaten such big prawns in my life. The pumpkin was so soft and sweet with the perfect crunch from the salted egg batter. IT JUST NEEDED MORE SALT. Lots of pumpkin! Lobster- lacked flavor and was a very small lobster with not a lot of meat. Salt and pepper fried tofu for appetizer- yummy yummy. Perfect. Whole roasted duck- flavor was perfect, but the skin texture was stale. It wasn't like how it tastes at Tealicious. I don't know why the skin wasn't crunchy. Shrimp and egg chow fun- lacked flavor and too wet. Service was amazing for our two tables total of 18. They kept checking on us and even packed all of our food. There were two servers and only 3 other small tables with ours. The restaurant is quite small and is only for up to I believe 35 people on Theo occupant load signage. I would come back if I craved the Tiger prawns with pumpkin, but nothing else we tried. Maybe I'll try the fried rice next time and do an updated review.

I was feeling late night snacks so I got sweet-n-sour shrimp (my fave), salt-n-pepper wings (bc why not), and Mandarin chicken because the photos looked so good. Here's my opinion. Shrimp was perf. I love when they are straight and tailess with puffy/crunchy batter, the serving was legit too. The wings were yummy but a once in a while thing I would order if you ask me. The batter is thick and super crisp like a shell and so salty and flavorful in a good way. Came with lots of onions and jalapeños as it should and they chicken itself had a nice almost garlic marinated flavor. The chicken itself was piping hot and the best part. Just 'a lot' to eat-eat for a dinner. The Mandarin chicken was my least favorite just because it was a bit sweet for my liking. The upside is all their chicken this style is always big juicy all white breast meat chunks, nothing unrecognizable. My boys loved it, me not so much due to sweetness and being bready. All in all I still love this place and it is consistently good. If you love orange chicken get that for sure. When I picked up it was a tad warm inside the restaurant. They had the back door open in the kitchen, and it was 103 as a high so it wasn't refreshing to sit down and eat there.

Maybe the 20th??) of our dear dear friend, Hawaiian Elite TERRY K. coming back to visit with us! THE SETUP Such an incredible restaurant with great seating to support an incredible array of Chinese dishes and beverages! I'm actually in agreement with my friend & fellow Yelper David V. who said, "This place is like a high-quality Panda Express. Is that a good thing? You decide!" And David is right! By that I enthusiastically interpret his opinion as Tea Garden being incredibly ACCESSIBLE to every palette of customer: from those who are just casual Chinese food eaters, to the far FAR more demanding Asian appetites of friends who have much more experience with the wide diversity of Chinese cuisine and know how to ask for it, focusing on seafood, chicken, beef, vegetables, noodes, chilis, spice! PARKING AND "Parking"! It's kind of wild, but I find this more and more to be the case with great ethnic cuisine establishments, that delicious restaurants such as this find themselves in a STRIP MALL. Hey, nothing wrong with that, either! Cheaper rent means cheaper prices on the restaurant food. It ALSO often means tons of free plaza parking as in this case. So much for the car parking, not about where you "park" yer butt! We had a crew of eight (8) and all of us came with the attitude of "Let's try as many dishes as we can!": the large round tables with the large lazy-susans were the best method to make that plan work. If you are only 2-4 people, regular seating at rectangular tables will work just find. THE FOOD! And as I indicated earlier, we had a plethora of dishes: * Delicious broth & veggie soup to start * Crispy Eggrolls with Sweet & Sour Sauce * Crispy Shrimp with Sweet Chili Sauce * Chinese Chicken Caesar Salad * Fried Rice with Chicken & Shrimp * Broccoli Beef * Chicken Tso Chicken....and.... ...I can't remember what else! There was a LOT, but it becomes a blur after all the chicken and beef and shrimp and eggrolls I was devouring! THE LOWDOWN Suffice it to say, if you come with friends and an appetite, you are going to be soooo satiated! And in addition, I lucked out since half our friends were from the Bay Area and they sent me home with a large (LARGE) share of the leftovers that lasted me the week after that weekend banquet! Good food! Reasonably priced! Tons O' Fun!

Delicious food, Great service [Elk Grove CA]…read more Met up with friends at this Chinese restaurant on Laguna Blvd in Elk Grove, Party of 8. The place was not busy on a Saturday evening and our party leader ordered the Family-style dinner for 8. The food was plenty with plenty of leftovers to take home! Soup: Wonton soup Appetizers: Vegetable egg rolls, Fried Prawns, Chinese chicken salad Main Dishes: Sesame Chicken, Shrimp w/ Vegetable, Lemon Chicken, Kung Pao Beef, Sizzling Seafood, Beef w/ Broccoli, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Combination Chow Mein (Hong Kong Style), and Combination Fried Rice The beef w/ broccoli and the Hong Kong-style combination chow mein were my favorite. Service was great. Prices are reasonable with a wide variety of dishes to choose from. Very friendly and attentive customer service. They are a family- owned restaurant since 2007. There are plenty of seating including booths and round tables. Lots of parking in a shared private lot. Pleasant first time experience! Review #4057

Best DEAL for Dim Sum in Sacramento!…read more Be prepared for a LONG line! But honestly, for the price, I can see why this place is so popular. The restaurant was under its original owner, Nathan, for more than a decade before changing hands and shifting its focus to Chinese dim sum. They also switched from the traditional dim sum carts to a paper checklist menu: you just check off what you want and hand it to the server. Service: Friendly and efficient. Ambiance: Very casual and family-style. The décor is a little dated, with low ceilings. Definitely has that old-school mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall feel. Restroom: Decent and clean. Food: Overall, decent. Not the best dim sum I've had, but considering the prices, it's a pretty good deal. *Porridge: Good texture, but there wasn't much egg or meat in it. *Siu Mai & Har Gow: Tasty, but I wish the wrappers were thinner. *Chicken Feet & Bean Curd Skin Roll: Good flavor and nice and tender. *BBQ Pork Bun, Steamed Pork Bun & Custard Bun: Warm, fluffy, and enjoyable. *Egg Tart: Lightly sweet with a nice texture. *Supreme Soy Sauce Chow Mein: Too dry for me and almost no flavor. This was probably my least favorite. Overall, the food is decent, but the prices are the real winner here. If you don't mind waiting in line, this is a great option when you're craving dim sum without spending a lot!

It was solidly average for many, many years and now it just isn't good...each of the three dishes I ordered from here on my most recent visit ended up as items I didn't want to keep eating. I've never disliked any Honey Walnut Shrimp from anywhere, but I disliked it from here. The batter and sauce was not good. The Braised Fillet of Rock Cod was a lot of tofu and the Mushroom and Tofu w/Vegetables had mostly tofu with little mushroom. Each dishes flavor was just appealing...I keep saying, "This isn't worth eating", and just had a tiny portion of each item. The boy choy in the Mushroom and Tofu w/Vegetables dish was DISGUSTING. I know some/many Chinese restaurants may not wash their veggies, but to see the amount of dirt caked in the boy choy was so gross; I've never seen so much dirt on a dish from a restaurant before...At first I couldn't believe all that black stuff was dirt, so I checked with a napkin and sure enough, all dirt. I don't think I can say I want to come back after the last items I've tried from here.

The food was outstanding! We had hot n sour soup, spicy pork dumplings and sesame balls. My husband is still talking about the sesame balls today because they were so good. Their portions are very generous. The soup spoons were a pretty coated ceramic and the silverware was heavy weighted and comfortable, not forgetting to mention they were gold plated. It was like dining at a friend's house instead of a restaurant. The service was prompt and friendly and the three men in the kitchen were working tirelessly. The prices were reasonable. We will definitely be back. I highly recommend Hidden Dumpling House.

The decor was simple and cozy. Their menu has changed a couple of times since we've first been here a few months ago. We ordered a lot of food over the times we've been here from Shrimp Siu Mai to Pork And Cabbage Dumplings to Xiao Long Bao to Beef Noodle Soup to Mongolian Beef to Garlic Eggplant to Chow Fun to Salt And Pepper Tofu to Honey Walnut Shrimp to Spicy Garlic Green Bean to Mapo Tofu to Mixed Vegetables to Black Pepper Beef. The Xiao Long Bao, Pork and Cabbage, Mongolian Beef, Chow Fun, and Mixed Vegetables were all delicious to us. We tried to order something new each time we ate here to try more of the menu. The restaurant can get busy but we haven't been when there's people waiting to come inside to be seated. Overall, I thought this restaurant was good and we'll be back in the future!

Definitely the most tastiest duck I've ever had. The skin was crispy and the fat just melted in your mouth. The pancake making process was definitely unique but i would just love the duck on rice with some pepper. The sirloin was tender, moist and medium rare. Great stir fry. The 5 color xlb was a disappointment though. Tasty still but not worth the hype since the dumplings cooled down way to quickly and the taste was not on point. Ambiance wise, very beautiful inside. They had spacious areas for groups, big 4 person tables, and a great outdoor patio area. Definitely a good spot to try and ill come back here for the duck again.

This restaurant is a to-go only restaurant, and gets plenty of traffic from the area. I went midday (3:00pm) and there were at least 4 customers in and out during the time I was there. While I was checking their menu, I decided to order, since I remember how good their chicken wings are. I ordered the chicken wings, and a lunch combo with chicken with black bean sauce. The combo comes with chow mein and fried rice and an egg roll for $13.99 but I asked for steam rice instead of fried rice. Unfortunately, I didn't check my plate before leaving the restaurant because they gave me all steam rice and no chow mein. Despite the error, their chicken wings are still the best, and the chicken with black bean sauce was very good. I would've like to have tried the chow mein. Also, I didn't notice that they charged $16.99 for the plate, which was a little steep considering I got no chow mein. Some of the condiments are extra, like the hot mustard, so ask for it before they ring up your bill. I'm sure I'll be going back for the chicken wings because it's made fresh and it's really good.
