Another mother and daughter day out to enjoy dim sum. It's our way to reconnect over a cup of fragrance Jasmine tea and our favorite dim sum to rejuvenate our energies. The place was packed but not noisy. We got shrimp dumplings, shrimp rice rolls, fried shrimp balls, baked pineapple buns, oyster sauce Chinese broccoli, and beancurd skin rolls. Pineapple buns were decently authentic and the beancurd skin rolls and Chinese broccoli were solidly delicious. All the shrimp dishes were good except for the shrimp rice rolls. Shrimp rice roll is my daughter's favorite so we always ordered it. However, the shrimps in this dish tasted off, didn't taste fresh. But the shrimps in the other shrimp dishes tasted fine. We usually don't order any fried dim sum but we felt like being "bad" so we ordered the fried shrimp ball, which turned out to be the star of the day. ("Everything tastes better fried"!!) The shrimp balls looked absolutely beautiful and the outer skins were crunchy. The balls came out piping hot and the shrimps tasted wonderful. That's exactly what we needed that day. It's nice to indulging ourselves with our favorite foods, sipping some tea to chill out after a long week and leaving the restaurant feeling full and completely happy. The har gow wrappers were relatively thin with a slight chewy texture which met my basic expectations. Service was good as the workers were friendly and cleared dishes promptly. The general chicken and kung pao beef were good, but my favorites were the ginger & scallion beef and sweet & sour chicken. Friendly and very quick service. I stopped by Joy City to share a light dinner tonight. We both wanted a traditional Chinese new Year vegetarian dish called Jai, and asked the server for it. We also wanted an order of rice and was asking for a fish dish, and we ended up with the salted fish fried rice. The Jai wasn't quite what we wanted, because it didn't have the ingredients that comes with the traditional dish, but it didn't have the fried tofu, and the broccoli and baby Bok Choy was very fresh. We did not leave very happy but we didn't need much to fill us up. The server didn't appear to pay the best attention on getting the order right, but getting an order in seem to be the main goal, and trying to explain to another server didn't seem to help. This rest serves very good food though, so I hope the next time, I'll have better luck with my order. read more

I think I've just found my new favorite dim sum restaurant, this place is so good. My favorite dish was their salted pumpkin (you can add shrimp too). This isn't your dim sum place where people are rolling around the dim sum carts, instead they give you a menu and you just write down the quantity of items you want so I'm assuming everything is made to order. I really enjoyed the fried shrimp rolls and chicken feet. I would skip the egg tart next time, very mid. Service was efficient and they refilled out tea and waters as needed. One of my favorite Chinese dish is beef pan fried noodle (Hong Kong style). My boyfriend took me here since I have not tried their version. We came on a weeknight so they were not busy. We decided on 3 dishes. Beef pan fried noodle, tofu with mixed vegetables and salt & pepper pork chop. Food came out pretty quickly. The noodle was crispy. All the dishes were oily and greasy, which is to be expected, but it seemed to be even more so than what I'm used to. Portions are good. I accidentally came across this restaurant. I saw the same servers from Nathan's. I believe it's owned by the same owners. They have the same dim sum items and menu. Super friendly staff, was seated pretty quickly. It's further out in Elk Grove, close to I-5. Food was as good as Nathan's. The dinning area is much smaller, would recommend this place. It's pretty small, so plan accordingly for big parties. Compared to other dim sum places, the menu options are limited but they have the classics and it's reasonably priced and tastes just as good - if not better than some! I got 8 dishes for ~$60. I called in & my order was ready in 30 minutes on Christmas. When I arrived, the small dining room was bustling so I was glad that I opted for takeout. - Siu Mais were very juicy & big (reminded me of ABC Bakery) - Pineapple buns & egg tarts were baked perfectly with crunchy crust and soft filling - Congee was still steaming hot & tasted comforting, not overly salty - Pork fried dumplings had sweet QQ texture skin & savory pork filling, surprisingly good - XO sauce noodles were a little bland, could use more sauce/salt/spice. I'm not sure if the parking area is normally this hectic but when arriving during a rainy day on a holiday it was pretty tough to find a parking spot. We decided to walk a few doors down and walked into Joy City. Fortunately, despite it being busy here as well, we were immediately greated, seated and gave us enough time to observe the menu and order our food. We were completely satisfied with everything we ordered. Pork buns, hot and sour soup, dumplings, chow being among other things. Loved it! My 4 year old nieces can be picky eaters but they kept wanting more it was nice to see. Looks like I've got another go to spot when fam swings by and visits from so cal! read more

It was our first time going to this restaurant and it was worth going to. First thing for me is always the location and parking. It's located in Elk Grove in a shopping plaza. The parking area is not that big considering there are other restaurants next to it. The restaurant is clean, which is always a plus for me. If you order soup, they even serve it for you which I think is a very old tradition that doesn't happen anymore so kudos for that. Now, as far as the food, I had the beef and broccoli the beef seemed very chewy, but the flavor was definitely there with ginger and garlic, fried rice was decent. My saying is that a good way to discern a solid authentic Chinese restaurant is checking if it's under 4 stars. I previously went to Joy City before the change of ownership. We came for lunch and ordered a bunch of classic cantonese dishes & dim sum. Everything was hot and tasty! The cheong fun / rice rolls, har gao, and siu mai were comparable to the dim sum halls in SF/Milpitas. Service was fast and lunch was served with hot tea. There were several families enjoying their weekend gatherings at this local Elk Grove cantonese restaurant.
