Finally tried this place out as I've heard good reviews from this place. Thought it was going to be Americanized Chinese food due to the name but was amazed when I found out it wasn't. Ordered quite a selection of items and they were all pretty decent sized and amazing. They give you a pot of tea to start. Spareribs were a little over fried but well seasoned. My favorite were the mixed vegetables in garlic sauce as they had a good variety in the mix. Service was decent, as you would expect at any Chinese restaurant. We got take out for dinner. Nathan's really seems to have gone downhill. I saw they changed ownership this year, so I guess that could explain it. It was solidly average for many, many years and now it just isn't good...each of the three dishes I ordered from here on my most recent visit ended up as items I didn't want to keep eating. I've never disliked any Honey Walnut Shrimp from anywhere, but I disliked it from here. The batter and sauce was not good. The Braised Fillet of Rock Cod was a lot of tofu and the Mushroom and Tofu w/Vegetables had mostly tofu with little mushroom. Each dishes flavor was just appealing...I keep saying, "This isn't worth eating", and just had a tiny portion of each item. The boy choy in the Mushroom and Tofu w/Vegetables dish was DISGUSTING. I know some/many Chinese restaurants may not wash their veggies, but to see the amount of dirt caked in the boy choy was so gross; I've never seen so much dirt on a dish from a restaurant before...At first I couldn't believe all that black stuff was dirt, so I checked with a napkin and sure enough, all dirt. Came around 12:30 on saturday for lunch, fully packed, we waited like 10 mins max. Service not great, no welcome no greeting or anything, had to figure out that we need to write our name and party down then jus wait. Expected for chinese restaurant. They have same dimsum as joycity right by I5, we mainly wanted to try their other dishes. We ordered hargow, suimai, gold shrimp cheurng fun, beef cheurng fun, pineapple bun, stir fried rice noodle, beef chow fun, and salt n pepper spareribs. Before tip total ~$81. Most things came out after like 15-20 mins, some things took over 30-40 mins to come out when we were basically done eating. Pineapple buns (3), and gold shrimp cheurng fun were the best thing. Har gow decent as well, others wtv. Beef chow fun not good, very very oily, tasteless, the noodles were chunky n mushy. Rice noodles a wee bit better, less oily but still oily, a wee bit more flavor. Spare ribs good flavor, not crispy, weird color (old oil?), too thick tho wish they pounded it thin or smth. Overall would rather go to joycity, its closer, same if not better. I am so happy to know that there's another Chinese restaurant in Elk Grove that serves dim sum. I feel like the quality of food went downhill with Well Season and their prices are increasing with smaller portions. This will be my to go spot for delicious and fast dim sum. Everything I order tasted amazing; even my Chinese grandmother approved. The price is reasonable and portion size is perfect. I went during lunch time on Tuesday and it was pretty packed, so I can't imagine how busy it can get during the weekends. Is it worth the wait? I believe so! read more

Love the food here but some of the staff 2 times in a row SMOKE in the back of the kitchen and the whole place smells like cigarette smoke it's disgusting and I brought my baby here. It got so bad to the point I felt lightheaded. If you care about your lungs or your family don't come to this place. 2nd smoke is real and here you definitely get it. It's so funny how Asians talk a lot about when restaurants change ownership. It's no different here. I found out from my Mother on Law that Nathan's ended the beginning of there year and sold to another person. I think the people who own NJoy cafe bought this place. They started serving Dim Sum here. I arrived on a Sunday morning just about 30 minutes after they opened. There were a lot of people already here. Just a key note that when it's cold out the place is cold. The double doors open up to the main dining room. If you have a large group you get to go in the separate dinning area which is warmer since they walled it off. SO they server Dim Sum but the menu in a back and front of a single page menu. They have most of the stuff but not huge. We ordered a decent amount of food to try most of it. We got the : Fried pork dumpling Preserved egg w/ pork porridge - congee or Juk egg trat - Dan Tat Lotus leaf sticky rice Shrimp dumpling - Ha Gao Siu Mai minced shrimp and pork dumpling Cha Siu pao - BBQ pork bao Chicken feet Black bean sauce ribs Every thin was pretty good. The chicken feet were ok and so was the Ha Gao. they either had a bad skin since it stuck to the dish or over cooked it. I really loved the Juk but my wife said they put MSG and that's why I liked the flavor so much. As we sat there more and more people came in to eat so it's doing well as for business. I will be back to try more. The servers were at tentative and friendly. I am not sure if Yelp changes the page when owners change. Came here in a Monday evening, ordered the seafood dinner. The food was just okay and didn't match what the price was. The roasted chicken was absolutely dry. A lot of the dishes were overly salted. We used to come here a lot and it was not like this before. The service was poor, didn't come for a few minutes every time. The place still looked the same but just not as welcoming. We didn't leave a tip because there wasn't really service being done other than serving the food and I kept getting up to ask for items, drinks, utensils. They have a section for dim sum, noodles and soups, rice dishes and more. Typical chinese restaurant foods. They charge for tea but you can bring your own leaves or tea bag and they can bring you a teapot of hot water--which is what my mom did lol My to-go orders are shrimp har gow, shrimp rice roll, chow fun and char siu bao and they're pretty good and tasty. A favorite and must-try are their golden shrimp rice roll. So crispy and delicious with the soy sauce dip they provide. Their soup dumpling is okay, but nothing special. I wanted to try their wonton soup but when my mom was spooning some into her bowl, she found a fruit fly in it, so she requested to it was sent back. The bok choy that was in the soup was bitter, which was another reason why my mom decided was send back. The restaurant is a decent size with a dining room and a separate room that can fit 3-4 tables to the left side. Service is decent. You have to raise your hand to grab the attention of a waitress since they're so busy tending to other tables. We had to wait a while for an order before, to the point that we were done with the other dishes and then it came out. Overall, this place is aight. Decent for the price you pay. A few nights ago, I placed a phone order for pickup. I ordered three items, and they told me it would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived 45 minutes later, but the person at the front said our food wasn't ready and couldn't give us an estimated time. We waited another 15 minutes before finally taking our order home. I've been going to Nathan's since I was conscious and Nathan was still taking orders and greeting people. This place is an Elk Grove gem that delivers on delicious Chinese sit-down food--point at a family special and you're good to go. We revisited it for the first time in years the day after Thanksgiving and managed to land a table! It wasn't too busy, but the tables were definitely filled. Service is still fast (the first dish hit the table within five minutes of ordering) and accommodating--they asked if we needed a baby chair and were totally down to swap the steamed fish in a family special for a fried fish dish. So great, and we really appreciated it. Overall, the food slaps. It's not the best best Chinese food you'll ever have, but it for sure hits and is always a good time. We've been ordering from this place for quite a few years now. They are down the street from my brother's house so it is our go to Chinese restaurant when we are there. We've tried a lot of their dishes including chicken/combo fried rice, chicken/combo chow mein, chicken and salted fish fried rice, beef and broccoli, scrambled eggs and shrimp chow fun, beef chow fun dry, salt and pepper spare ribs, and we've also had their dim sum. Food is usually a hit and very good. It's always hot and fresh. I just think the chicken and salted fish fried rice had too strong of a fishy flavor. I prefer it more mild. Staff is usually courteous. The inside is not too big, but has several tables and a back area with 3 big tables. Place seems clean and we have not had an issue. Will keep coming here! read more

The skin on the chives dumpling was too soft and moist, not crunchy/crispy like it is suppose to. And the porridge didn't have a lot of flavor. Nathan's has been opened for years, but it is now under new ownership. They are now serving Dim Sum. There were not very many Dim Sum places in Elk Grove, but now there are a few popping up, about four including this one. The menu is limited but offers a lot of the popular dishes. To place an order, you fill out an order form at the table. You give the order form to one of the servers and they put in the order. They brought out the dishes pretty quick. We didn't have to wait long. The steamed items were hot, but the fried dumpling and the egg tarts we ordered were not. They were at room temperature. Everything tasted ok. They weren't bad and they weren't great. The only thing I thought that stood out for me was the steamed BBQ pork buns. They actually had a good flavor, and the bun was soft. Made well. Everything else was mediocre and the quality was not there. The pork fried dumpling skin was a little too thick and there wasn't a lot of filling. The pork and thousand egg congee only had little diced pork pieces. The egg was diced too, but a little bigger. The congee tasted good, but it was disappointing with the amount of pork in it, barely had any. Overall, I will probably not come back for their Dim Sum, unless I hear they have improved. I believe I may be in the crowd of "after new management" took over. The service from staff has been good though it has been noted that a certain staff member rarely smiles, food almost always come out quick! Tables are always kept clean and refreshed right after customers leave. Dim Sum items are available only the first half of the day and made to order, making it as fresh as it possibly. The normal menu items surprising tasty with a healthy portion provided. The short ribs, fried whole fish, mapo tofu, ginger beef, and especially the fried tofu with shrimp are satisfying indeed. On top of that, portion to price ratio is above average. One thing to be careful is the hot tea. Longtime staple in the community that my family has been coming to for years. I recently went with them on a recent visit and came during the height of dinner rush--it was busy but we were able to get a table. I ordered the XO Seafood Special and it was delicious. I'd order it again and I am curious to coming during the day for dim sum that is now being served under the management. Nathan's has been around for a while now but recently we heard great things about their dim sum and we had to try it out ourselves. So far we had dim sum twice at Nathan's and both times have been great. They have all the basics and they are all done well. Mostly importantly freshly made and comes out hot. They don't push the carts, you mark what you like on an order sheet. Service is normal, sometimes have to flag them down for what you need. Love the quality of the food. I went for the first time and ordered the sesame chicken. I was surprised to see it was like 95% chicken with a very thin coating of batter. The chicken itself was fresh and tasty. Very satisfying. I didn't order any other sides and the dish only comes with the chicken. Pretty friendly staff. Small lobby and dining area, but is was big enough for wiggle room and most importantly was clean floor to wall to ceiling! I was the only one eating here and the waitress immediately created a table for me so as to leave other tables for 2 or more guests. I came with my in-laws and family that were visiting from out of town on Sunday night. It was fairly busy with all of the large round tables occupied. However, the staff offered to combine two smaller tables together, which worked out for our group of 7. We ordered the scallop and egg white fried rice, beef chow fun, soy sauce chow mein, and salt and pepper spareribs. The food arrived steadily, and overall everything was okay. The soy sauce chow mein was definitely my favorite - you could taste the wok hay flavor, which is what the dish is all about. My least favorite was the scallop and egg white fried rice - it was shockingly bland and I couldn't even taste (and hardly saw) any scallop in it. I discovered that this restaurant started selling dim sum in the afternoon fairly recently due to a change in ownership. I have been here a few times with my family on the weekends and it is always so packed and busy. I would see a lot of people waiting inside and outside to get a table. Luckily my other family members will get there early to save a table for us. The inside is small for a Chinese restaurant and I can tell that they tried their best to squeeze as many tables as they can during dim sum hours. However, doing so did make it feel cramped in there and resulted in small walking spaces. The ordering process is different here compared to other places with dim sum carts. You are given a paper with items on their menu and have to mark the amount of what you want to order. After you are done, a worker will collect it and food will be brought out by them to your table based on when it is ready. Since the food does not come out all at once, the service felt a little slow to me. The dim sum is fresh and good, but I feel like some items can have some more flavor. Also, they do not have many options to choose from on their menu. My favorite items are the golden shrimp rice roll, shrimp and chive dumpling, and of course siu mai. Absolutely love Nathan's been coming here with my family for several years. It's always busy, food comes out hot and quick. We've tried so many items but our go to dishes and love getting the fried flounder, wonton soup, any tofu dish, chow mein, honey walnut shrimp. Word was spreading of a new dim sum game in town and I went to check it out. I'm happy to report Nathan's serves up some decent dim sum and is a welcome option for the denizens of Elk Grove. Currently the dim sum scene in EG was pretty weak, so people can rejoice. The place is medium sized but I can see it filling up quickly on weekend mornings. I went on a weekday late afternoon and there was a good sized crowd still. The standouts were the fried items, like the golden shrimp roll and salt and pepper squid (see my pix). The standard dim sum favorites like har gow and siu mai were above average in portion but for me the flavor was a bit muted, and needed some soy sauce and chili oil to get it to my liking. The bolo bao was pretty good also. Service is actually decent for a dim sum place and they were attentive to our needs. Decor is classic chinese joint so you will feel nostalgic and right at home. Just found out about this dim sum place in Elk Grove. Nathan's has been here for a while, I've eaten here many years ago and didn't care for their Chinese cuisine. When I heard about this place, I had to give it a try. Surprisingly, all of their dim sum items were pretty good. The only thing is that they're not the typical dim sum spot. So, they don't have carts that gets pushed around. Instead , you order off the menu and it gets delivered to the table. The staff are super friendly and it's not that big but has plenty of small tables and a couple of larger tables to accommodate parties of 10. The only down fall is, they are limited on their dim sum choices. There's a lot of items they don't have at typical dim sum spots. Overall, I would come back and recommend this place. New owners. For two or more years this place has been run by a different owner. Who is not there and or more importantly not micromanaging for quality. That being said the food quality has diminished to the point where the price of the items meets below standards. Nathans used to be able to charge the most in the area. Now it is dirt cheap quality, even the takeout boxes are cheap. Take out box not up to code btw, as such, you think they care about your food if they don't want to keep up with code violations? They told me the manager only comes in on Saturday. LMFAO expect everything to be bad at a whim because they wanted to be nice and let someone cook who should not be cooking at all and they will expect you to pay for your food. Oh yeh, their words. it is supposed to be like that. Ok so you expect to serve bad food. Owner or manager does not care. Once a week working restaurant owner heh. Funny. Red Flags, they say they are the same owners. Yet the prices dropped and did not go up with inflation. The original owners could always charge the most in the area and be packed. There is obviously no one overseeing the restaurant customers at all times or most of the times. You complain, they tell you it's supposed to be like that as if you don't eat out enough or don't know any better. Go down the street for Chinese food, they were the same people who used to be with the original owner in another restaurant and heavily maintain their quality. People just don't eat there due to the bad parking lot and lacking space to park. Asians know this, now you know how to track good Asian food. Follow the family. Not some random person buying up a restaurant and running it into the ground. With that being said, the walnut shrimp is usually 20 bucks. For a price of 15 bucks here you get over cooked shrimp, a pea sized amount of sauce instead of an entire coating, questionable lettuce, and walnuts that appear to be from a discount tin. Chewy shrimp is bad shrimp. Especially if it's supposed to have a coating of fried breading. You don't like chewy fried chicken, right? Peking spareribs, usually 20 bucks, for here it is 15 bucks and at this discount you can get overcooked, not tender, badly chopped over cooked pork chops with flavored grease to just get that right bit if color. The color stained the takeout container. Did not stick, STAINED. With that being said, I had a pretty epic encounter with persons on the phone treating me like I was incompetent and did not know any better. Hung up on many times and I was being polite. I was telling them I did not want the same cook to recook my items. So, they finally got the point I was angry after the third call from them hanging and after me telling them I am coming in to complain. Finally, I got someone to agree to refund me after the person got angry and asked me what I wanted to do. Which was a refund after asking if the same person was going to cook horrible food again. Especially not being hung up on three times, lied to about the same owner, and that the food was supposed to be like that. I came in, it was busy, person doubled down on the quality and told me that the walnut shrimp was supposed to be lightly coated with sauce... No one does this, it's like saying your haircut is supposed to be crooked. I was patient and showed her the shrimp, asked about the lettuce, the quality of the nuts and one look at the pork she looked disgusted and openly admitted that it was bad. I am only assuming the new owner forced her to lie or they just do it as their culture. Man making people look bad. Before I left, I told them I would be nice, then loudly told them that there was a new owner for two years ago before leaving. They refunded me at least so there's that. Note. We arrived around 10:45 a.m. The restaurant already had some customers seated, we were seated right away. You tell the staff what type of tea you want, $1.50 per person for the weekend. They give you the menu card, and you can write the no. of quantity you want for the dim sum you want. We had Siu Mai, har gao, steamed custard buns, rice rolls with Chinese donuts, stirred fried noodles, and steamed BBQ pork buns. Their dim sum is flavorful and not fatty, especially the siu mai. Instead of giving a heads-up or apologizing, the waitress blamed my grandmother for not knowing she was there, which felt very inconsiderate. At the end of the meal, we left a smaller tip because of the experience, and the waitress reacted poorly--she showed us the cash and asked, "That's it?" which was uncomfortable and unprofessional.
