I was their first and only customer, so I assume I got the most attention :) Ordered the small Pho Ga with the default noodles, but asked to separate the soup and noodles (soup on the side) because I really dislike soggy noodles, which fresh noodles (their default noodle option) tend to be in soup. The taste is not overwhelming nor is it too salty. The large bowl was huge and could reasonably feed two hungry people. - Satay beef noodles: While it looks spicy, the flavor profile leans more sour. The angus beef (as advertised) was super tender and juicy, and the thin rice noodles had a good texture. I really need to stop trying out places that I see from targeted ad videos on TikTok. I had Joy Hing bookmarked on my places to try after watching a reel about how good the wontons were and the honey roast BBQ pork (cha siew). I also wanted to support local Chinese businesses across different Chinatowns as a self-proclaimed Chinatown kid. When I came on a random Friday afternoon, there was just one person dining inside, and one person for takeout...I didn't think much of it and just assumed that I had just missed the busy lunch crowd. Little did I know that I was on the edge of Chinatown, which means Joy Hing doesn't get as much buzz as some of the other places more central. In terms of interior, it's your run of the mill restaurant - kind of like a cha chan taang, but definitely not a banquet hall of any sort. Videos of people cooking in rural China were on loop on the TVs, which I thought was cute. After hearing them speaking Toisanese in the kitchen, I tried to order in the same language (being my first one), but they didn't quite understand me, which should have tipped me off. I went with the order that I saw on tik tok and eagerly awaited. The tik toker was right - the wonton was pretty good, but I don't know that it was as massive or juicy as he had described. Moreover, the broth was nothing to write home about - I'm already not the biggest fan of wonton noodle, so this one didn't feel much different from the ones I'd already had. I added in some cha siew to try more fare, and the meat was a bit dry and too red as compared to what I'm used to in NY. Saw this place in Instagram and pinned it to my list to go to in Chinatown. The menu is extensive and has a little bit for everyone's craving for the day. You know it's a good sign when you walk in and you hear the uncs and aunties yappin. It just means this place is authentic ! The Satay Beef Noodle soup was great. It has a spice in it I can't pinpoint, but it made it unique to any other beef noodle soup I've had. I was expecting a taste closer to bun bo hue, but no it's something different. Still very tasty! The cucumbers innit was a surprise and it worked very well. The chicken wings came out piping hot and crunchy. The chicken itself didn't have much flavor tho. The chow fun is something I'd order again. The beef was cooked with a Smokiness flavor to it. This spot accepts card for payment, so I am happy that I didn't have to pull money at an ATM. Great spot for a quick solo lunch. There are so many options in Chinatown but many are cash only, some might take credit card. But for me who forgot my wallet at home, I needed a spot with great food that also took apple/google pay. I ordered the pho gai with chicken organs. Rare I ever see chicken organs on the menu so this was a happy surprise for me. Food came out fairly quickly and it was a decent portion that I was able to finish too. The auntie that greeted me is very friendly and also speaks Canto, Mando, and English! They recently remodeled the place and it's spacious and clean. First visit: clean and pretty large for something so central/affordable. Beef chow fun was good. I tipped well and provided a 5-star review. Second visit: ordered rare beef, brisket, tendon and tripe pho. Not sure if they saw the review or if they expected I would tip as well regardless of their service, but the bowl came out without tendon and tripe. I was not advised of this beforehand. When I asked the waitress about it, she told me that they haven't served that in a long time. Rude. Stopped by for lunch today excited to see what what sort of BBQ they have. Don't let the name fool you. There's not much BBQ here and certainly no BBQ noodles. The only BBQ they have here are six rice plates and you can choose from: beef, pork or chicken. There are no BBQ meats over noodles as an option. The other 95% of their menu consists of noodle soups, vermicelli, entrees, seafoods, rice plates, chow fun, chow mein and veggies. I ordered their yellow sliced chicken noodle soup. Comes with a side of ginger sauce, a slice of lemon and jalapenos. The broth was wayyy overly salted. I could already taste the salt burning my tongue. Too much MSG. Our party of seven came here for lunch and ordered a variety of dishes--spring rolls, pho, chicken noodle soup, wonton noodle soup, chow fun with beef and shrimp, Hong Kong-style noodles, and two Thai teas. I visited Joy Hing during lunch hour on a Friday and there were a lot tables to choose from. The waitress attended to me quickly and brought me a hot tea and glass of iced water. First - be careful of the bill they give you. On the printed receipt, they already include 18% tips, yet they don't tell you but still show tips row on there for you to fill. On the initial handwritten receipt, all the items are 2-3 bucks higher than the price you saw on the menu. Ask them why before you pay!! Second - their pho is the worst I got in the neighborhood. Not so much meat, tons of noodles. In Their "special", which is their spicy beef noodles soup, they don't even give you much of a beef broth, replacing with bland water and chili oil. I haven't tasted the meat of the chicken itself in many years, as most establishments offer chicken that is either completely bland, fried, or over-seasoned. Here, the simple, slightly gamey flavor of fresh chicken shines through and it is delicious! The broth is rich and compliments the chicken and thin noodles (our preference over the wide noodles). I ate here for the first time earlier today. I wanted to try out the Chicken Noodle Soup. My order was brought to my table pretty quickly and the waiter was very friendly. I loved how my soup had lots of thick wide rice noodles. The soup was excellent. I am still eating soups for a while due to me recovering from my recent open heart surgery. After meeting up with my Daughter K in San Francisco, we only had time to grab a quick and early brunch. I was looking for some Cantonese roast duck and BBQ pork. They are "not" Cantonese Bar-B-Que restaurant and does not serve roast duck. When we arrived and perused the menu we found out that Joy Hing Bar-B-Que Noodle is actually more of a Pho restaurant that serves some Chinese dishes. This restaurant has friendly staff, and a clean interior. Their dishes are very flavorful, however when I order take out, the food is so hot it begins to melt the bottoms of the to go containers. The food is also placed in a plastic bag, which fortunately catches the sauces that leak out. So when we walked in there were plenty of seats available and as the afternoon went on this place slowly filled in. Strolling into Chinatown after work and looking for dinner can be a hit-or-miss proposition if you don't have a game plan beforehand. Hunan Homes is usually my go-to for steamed chicken since they are not stingy with the poultry or the ginger-garlic sauce. Bring it on. But I decided to break from my habit and give Joy a try. Her place is opposite Portsmouth Square on Kearny, so you'd expect it to be bustling at dinner. Nope, it was empty, so clearly they thrive on the lunch crowd since it looked like Joy and her husband were sitting at a booth shooting the breeze when I entered the premises. They got up for action when I sat myself down at one of their formica tables, and I perused their comprehensive menu. Sure enough they have steamed chicken. There it was on the cover for $8.50, the Steamed Chicken Over Rice, a good price I must say, but was that enough for me? I noticed they make some Vietnamese dishes like a $7.95 small bowl of Pho Ga Long, which they dubbed abruptly as Chicken & Organs Noodle Soup. Did I have it in me to have a two-cluck dinner? Why yes, yes, I did. The Steamed Chicken came out first, a good quarter-chicken cut up into six large pieces which were hard to handle without a knife. I suppose I could have asked for one, but I was going to show off my chopstick dexterity and prove unequivocally my Asian roots. 3.5 STARS for food. 4 STARS for service. At 6pm this place is completely empty. I was surprised by how the tables were not falling apart like most Chinese restaurants and that the service was friendly. The bathrooms are weirdly clean and new. Aside from that Joy Hing is a standard Chinese restaurant serving a few Vietnamese dishes. Their famous pho ga is similar to Turtle Tower, loved the slippery wide noodles but it had a much more Chinese flavor (eg less fish sauce). I'm more a fan of TT but JH is a little closer to my office. The small and large are different by about 50 cents - large is the same except they give you more noodles. The Hainan plate had standard "Princess Chicken" that you could get at a Chinese BBQ - steamed white skinned chicken and was pretty moist. It was really good with the ginger scallion sauce but overall nothing special and needed more sauce or broth. It comes with what seems like 2.5 bowls of white rice. Crispy salt and pepper squid was generous. Salty and too oily for my taste. They accept AMEX! It was a rainy kinda day and I wanted some comfort pho. Little Saigon was too far for a lunch trip and I had been to Golden Star a bit lately so wanted to try somewhere new. This place was pretty mediocre, which I probably should have deduced ahead of time by the fact that Golden Star across the park is way more crowded. Pho Ga: I'm normally a Pho Bo guy, but decided to try their Pho Ga since it was raved about on Yelp. A skimpy amount of chicken and somewhat bland broth. The scallion ginger sauce helped spice things up though. The noodles were thick and silky so gave it some good texture. Egg Rolls: Not to be confused with an Imperial Roll you usually get at a Vietnamese restaurant, though these were served with nuoc cham sauce. Veggie heavy and lacking personality. Enter Joy Hing Bar-B-Que Noodle and some much needed noodle soup for my sorry ass. Really wanted beef pho but everyone else seemed to be Yelping about the pho ga so I went for that. Overall it was a decent bowl of noodles. Didn't find the clear broth to be overly salty like others had mentioned and I enjoyed the ginger, scallion, and five-spice dipping sauce for the Hainanese steamed chicken. Overall a decent bowl of chicken noodle soup, but not necessarily memorable enough to keep craving it to come back. The move closer to the FiDi for Joy Hing Bar-B-Que Noodle is definitely reflected in the restaurant. Service was really sweet and their bathrooms are amongst the cleanest in a Chinese noodle spot. Their main chicken noodle soup is simple but well balanced flavor. Broth has some grease, which I prefer but for those who wants very lean broth might not take.
