I was recommended this place for their fruit smoothie/slushes. The avocado/durian freeze was solid. They put the perfect amount of avocado/durian and it wasn't watered down and unlike some other places it does not taste artificial. The watermelon lychee slush was very refreshing. We ordered at a counter outside and came on a weekday so we waited just 5 min for our drinks. Apparently the line can be pretty long so we got lucky. Worst Joy Yee location! The location by Lane Tech High School is by far the best one. The ambience here was gloomy today and depressing. They served us a pitcher of water and the pitchers were extremely filthy with tiny plastic cups. I thought it was extremely ghetto because this is a restaurant and water should always be served in proper glasses. We ordered shrimp pad Thai, Korean bulgogi over rice, lemongrass wings, rose tea, and milk tea with boba. The pad thai doesn't compare to the Roscoe village location, it was a really small portion that wasn't worth 18 dollars; noodles were extremely dry and not properly cooked. Located in the new area for chinatown, this large, usually crowded restaurant has excellent Korean short ribs. The menu is huge and with photos. The garlic noodles that came with it were overcooked and didn't have enough garlic. I tried the Chinese broccoli, and it wasn't my favorite because it had too much oil. It was perfectly cooked. The mango milk tea was not my favorite. I have had their juices which are way better but it can be very sweet. The restaurant is highly popular for their juices in the summer. We got here at lunchtime on a weekend and partly chose this place because of outdoor seating (fresh air, pandemic, y'know). When we got inside they told us the outdoor seating wasn't open. (When we walked past less than an hour later it was, so I wonder when they decide to open it up?) So we sat inside and ordered. Let me start out by saying all the food was fantastic. Amazing. So much pho I had to save it for later and the kimchi fried rice was the perfect amount of spice. I was surprised to learn that this place only had 3.5 stars. But then I realize the service is pretty awful. I know we're in a pandemic, but I had to ask if someone was going to take our order. Which she gladly did, which was nice. Then later I also had to ask for the check. It wasn't clear who was suppose to be caring for this area. I used to think Mccb which is literally across from Joy Yee was great but I'm no longer a damn the pineapple is a sweet & interesting factor of the ice however it's the only flavor profile. Despite multiple attempts to flag down servers, it took a frustrating 30 minutes before anyone even took our order. Each time we tried to get someone's attention, we were met with attitude - we were paying for service When the servers did approach, they seemed annoyed by our requests. We had to ask repeatedly for basics like napkins and utensils--items that should have been provided automatically. The service was not just slow but condescending, making a simple meal out feel like an ordeal. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience. Totally a tourist trap. The food was nowhere authentic and extremely overpriced. We ordered 2 different types of Vietnamese noodle dishes and the broth for both tasted the exact same, almost like they use the same packaged soup powder to make them both. read more

One of the largest and most Americanized Chinese places in Chinatown. They put forks on the table, and you have to ask for chopsticks--that's a switch! You won't see duck entrails hanging anywhere or geoducks stuck to the sides of aquariums. You won't see earthworm rice or turtle eyeball soup on the menu. Joy Yee is is super clean, and the waiters are pleasant--if you're lucky, and the moon is full, they'll smile. The food is good, but they're not reinventing Chinese cuisine here; they know their customers come for the basics, and that's what they do best. Most of the menu is standard compared to other restaurants nearby. I stuck with something easy and conventional, though my chicken with broccoli was underwhelming. It was good, but it wasn't flavorful. Should it have been? Probably not--it's just bland little bits of white meat chicken and broccoli. The portions are reduced since I was here seven years ago, and they STILL sell sodas by the can. What they excelled at--and I suggest you get an order--is crab rangoon. Finding this place was just an adventure. We were originally there to eat some food, but then found ourselves walking around the plaza and discovering a wonderful boba place. We didn't get any of the food, but just did their take out window for boba. If you're a newbie, i recommend getting ready by looking at the menu to decide what you want. They do have a window to order, but also you might find yourself in the self check out computer system. I saw so many people last minute trying to figure out what they want, so the line got ridiculously long. sugar adjustment isn't much of a thing here too, so some drinks are very sweet. Other drinks, i do recommend shaking very well before drinking cause you'll drink all the overly sweet syrup before getting to the team. I definitely learn my lesson. A surprise we got from this place is the size of the cups. A "Regular" size is already large, but their large size was way bigger. It lasted a while for us. The menu is overwhelmingly large so I usually order a bit at random. It is good if you have a picky group or group with less experience eating authentic Asian food. The portions are quite large and a lot of items can be shared. Every table had one of their fruity drinks so they seem popular enough. Joy yee has a great lunch special! About $14 for lemongrass pork chop with garlic noodles, which comes with small soup of the day and two dumplings! When I came the soup of the day was hot and sour. The lemongrass pork chop was grilled perfectly and comes with come flavored fish sauce to dip/pour over. It's a great deal and the avocado durian shake was great too! I got it with pearls, some of the pearls were a little frozen since the shake was really cold but I was ok with that. They did forget to bring water until we asked for it at the end. Although most people know joy yee for the boba, they also offer a large selection of food including many Vietnamese dishes, since the owner is Vietnamese. This place is like a Cheesecake Factory that serves Asian food and it gives me corporate cafeteria vibes. The menu is huge. I was stunned by the number of items they had to offer and they have pictures too. The place was clean and service was pretty attentive. Most importantly, it was ACed. They also served water in an individually capped plastic cup with a straw and they'll come around to refill your water. We got crab rangoons, pho, and some chicken vermicelli dish that came with one egg roll. Their crab rangoons aren't will-stab-your-mouth type of crispy, but it's pretty light and the bf liked it. The sauce that comes with it is also great and not overly tart. The pho was fine, beef had some fatty strips, and they offer hoisin sauce and sriracha with a lime slice and a pepper. We were also amazed by the size of the portions and the bf didn't end up finishing his vermicelli dish. We're not egg roll people so can't really judge it. I was surprised by how many things you could order on the menu and there were 2 very full pages of just drinks as well! Plenty of foods to try here and I would come again to try them all! Food I got the wonton and beef noodle soup and would have to say that the noodle and wonton were my favorite parts of this dish. The portions were huge and I had like 6 wontons in addition to the beef. The beef was just okay and were pretty well cooked and tougher than what I expected. Noodles were nice and chewy and delicious. The soup itself was not too salty and really warmed me up. I got the Vietnamese appetizer platter to share with my friend and it was perfect to evenly split everything. To be honest I couldn't finish all the food from the platter and my noodle soup since there was so much food. Atmosphere Casual and relaxed atmosphere despite how busy everything was. I went at 2pm on a Sunday and there were still many people in there. There would probably be a wait if I came at peak times. Pricing Prices a little higher than average of what I was expecting to pay but the portions make up for that and is definitely worth it. Service  Service was good and fast. This place has gone down. I wanted you to know that first and foremost. I have been coming to Joy Yee for years. I haven't been in about a year but was extremely disappointed when I took my daughter here(this is what she wanted for her 18th birthday) along with her siblings. First of all, we waited 20 minutes for a server to show up. People were seated after us and got a server before us. Second, they brought our drinks out and forgot about half of them, we had to ask for the other half. 3rd , they brought dishes out one by one. First the fried rice then 5-10 min later the orange chicken then after that beef and broccoli. The person who took our order was someone different then who brought the drink , someone different from who brought the food and someone who can and cleared the table. No one ever checked on us. I had to hunt someone down for soy sauce. I asked for EXTRA spicy orange chicken, it wasn't spicy at all. The portion sizes have been probably cut in half from what they used to be. The restaurant looks a mess , Stantions for lines everywhere inside the restaurant. The service was horrible. On top of that, they charged $30 gratuity to my check. Didn't tell me just dropped it off. It was me, my daughter and 2 sons and my toddlers who -didn't even eat. Some guy just came by when he saw money on the check and said "are you done?". The quality of the food is so mediocre now, I might as well go to Panda Express around the corner. The 1 star is because my taro boba was decent although I usually order it with taro pudding in the bottom , of course they said they don't have that anymore. Of course. Even though it looks very nice and it has nice interior, the bathrooms smelled horrible and it was not pleasant to be in. There's barely any stalls and there's almost no room for everyone to walk around without having to squeeze through. Probably only 2-3 stalls. Our waiter was passively annoyed/rude, we couldn't hear him and he didn't look that happy doing his job. We asked him if they could substitute since they said they ran out but he said they couldn't. How hard could substituting be? Ridiculous. And when one person was ordering he would just talk to someone else. Very confusing and a pain for us to dealt with. Utensils and plate didn't look very trustworthy so I had to wipe it down with a napkin. The fried rice we ordered didn't take long to arrive. It arrived very fast. But the rice was so SALTY.. well the salted fish was. They didn't cut them up small enough so your hit with a salt rush. Horrible. But if you avoided the fish and just ate the rice it wasn't bad. But didn't lead up to my expectations. The boba here is pretty good. The tapioca is chewy just how I like, and the smoothies flavor is good too. I got the avocado with tapioca. It's something I reccomend if you end up visiting. The rest of the food was alright. Not very good and I wouldn't come back to this place. There was a bunch of hype on TikTok about this place so I did what anyone would do, believe the hype.. I was very disappointed. First, make sure you know what drink you want before entering. The drink menu is outside of the restaurant, so you need to look at that to see what you want before entering. The staff wasn't very helpful. I was stuck between 2 drinks and asked which one was more popular and the lady said, "Idk I haven't tried either of the drinks." Haven't been to Chinatown Square in over a year due to the pandemic so when we were in the city the other night, we got our fresh fruit smoothie cravings on. My favorite recipe is mango-pineapple with mixed jellies and mango pudding . I actually don't care much for tapioca boba (except for crystal boba which is at this one other location called Umbrella Tea House). In general, I love the jellies and puddings much more. This was not bad for $8+ for the size and the fresh fruits considering all the toppings added. The cup was so big I could barely hold it and it didn't fit in out car's cup holder either. Hubby and I each got our own because while we are married and share a lot of things, we DON'T share smoothies. Lol, trust me, it's just better that way (He didn't get the toppings and opted for mango-lychee). Next time you're not sure what kind of flavor combo to get. Try this one. I sure love it! We mainly came here for their drinks but wanted to try out their food as well. My wife ordered their beef chow mein and it didn't taste great. Usually the the noodles are cooked with the the rest of the entree, but here they serve you the noodles separate. The noodles were hard and the beef had an odd taste. Definitely wouldn't order that again. I played it safe and ordered their orange chicken. You get plenty of food, and the orange chicken was delicious. It was sweet with a hint of spiciness. Would probably order this again. I also ordered a mango strawberry freeze. It was delicious and tasted fresh. My wife ordered some coconut with tapioca and had an ever better flavor, but I preferred the strawberry popping over the tapioca. Overall the drinks were great, but the food was too pricey for the taste, even though you do get a lot of food.
