My husband had kunpow chicken he said was perfect, I had the Mongolian Beef and it was very good, not the best I have had but the best since the place I considered the best closed when the Wok Chef decided to retire at age 83! Proves we American's are retiring far too young and our older generation is both depressed and living in poverty. Since Emperor's is in Chinatown don't be surprised if you have to walk a few blocks or drive around several times to find a parking spot but its worth it and the waddle back to the car probably was a good thing as we stuffed ourselves and still brought back food! Visiting Chicago, we had to check out Chinatown! My son loves Chinese food, so why not? There are so many restaurants to choose from, it can get a little overwhelming, but we were determined to find a place that served Egg Fu Yung. While we were walking around, taking in all the sights and smells, this amazing aroma hit me from across the street. I looked at the menu and sure enoughthey had Egg Fu Yung! We had a fantastic late lunch/early dinner for two here recently and are still thinking back on it! The restaurant was crowded when we arrived, not surprisingly, but we were still seated almost immediately. Our server was one of just a couple that were running around to tend to their tables. The interior is pretty basic with creams and shades of green, round tables, and slightly dated furniture. We spent a while looking through the extensive menu and reading online reviews before we decided on the Cantonese roasted duck, general tsos chicken, shumai, and egg rolls. Everything was delicious, hot and fresh. In order of our most favorite to least favorite: The egg rolls, roasted duck, general tsos, and shumai. The almond cookies they give you with your fortune cookies and bill are actually pretty tasty! Bathroom was located right in the back near the kitchen door and was clean and easily accessible. It was a beautiful August Saturday afternoon. My wife, son and I decided to take the train into Chicago to visit Chinatown. I remembered visiting Emporer's Choice back in the day and remembered it being good. Unfortunately, the food is just mid. We ordered shrimp rolls, Mongolian beef, beef with broccoli, sautéed green beans and orange chicken. We could have stayed in the suburbs and done better. The restaurant, while clean had no ambiance. So good. So fast. I love authentic Chinese. Was visiting Chicago from Detroit and the place we tried prior to this was WAY too busy. I had the seaweed soup, Bean Sprout Stew w whole roasted garlic, and pan fried pot stickers. I substituted the Sprouts for Chinese Broccoli as they were out of sprouts. Their family toned atmosphere is very comfortable. I finally found a place to get the Onion Pancake. The Dumpling Soup broth was so good, I took home an order. I noticed that their dumplings in the soup are with homemade dough. Adding a special touch to the soup. Today, I ordered from their lunch menu. The Shrimp and Walnut dish (large Shrimp with vegetable), along with the Chicken Egg Foo Young. The portions were plentiful and delicious. I had an issue ordering online. I am a Chicago native and our Chinatown is definitely one of our big city landmarks. I love coming to Chinatown and this restaurant is currently my absolute favorite! As a family, we used to patronize China and Chiam as well as Won Kow restaurants in the past which unfortunately are all now closed. So glad I discovered this restaurant by trying them several years ago. I highly recommend coming here! Everything is delicious and served hot! Hubby and I's favorite dishes are their crispy Egg Rolls, delicious Hong Kong Steak and their Shrimp Fried Rice. The fortune and almond cookies are always fresh when given at the end of the meal. Staff is friendly and helpful but I must give a special shout out. On one of our visits there, Joey was our server and we are officially now hooked - she is now our favorite! Very fun personality, sweet and makes the experience a special one! She makes the best Pina Colada around, I guarantee so get one! Ask for her when you visit. Definitely a good choice to grab lunch here when you're in Chicago's Chinatown! I didn't want to spend too much time waiting for food so I decided to order from their lunch specials. It was multiple option to order from. My lunch included a choice of soup, which I picked the Egg flower soup, a huge Egg roll, a plate of Beef Broccoli and Fried Rice. Food was very fresh, and tasty! Especially the beef, which was very tender and flavorful! I really loved the Egg roll too. The cabbage was very finely chopped and the meat was flavorful in it. Waitress was very nice and attentive. She refilled my coke in a timely manner, and checked on me often if I needed anything . The restaurant was fairly busy during lunchtime. That was rough. It was pretty busy, and there was a busboy and 3 people waiting tables. Want to feel invisible? Ask for a water refill. My niece had egg drop soup that she said was good. My grandson has some American type Chinese food and it was hot and fresh and he really liked it. The steamed dumplings were so over steamed they crumbled apart and the soy noodles had been sitting in the kitchen so long that the noodles were dried out and crunchy and the sauce had evaporated and it tasted like a salt lick. Not to mention a plate of food would show up randomly and we might not see another for 15-20 minutes. At that point we just laughed and called it a lesson to never go back. It was pretty awful. I went on a Friday night and there was plenty of seating available. That's not to say that you shouldn't dine at this restaurant. It's a hidden low key restaurant. The egg rolls were tasty and came out very hot and fresh. I ordered a blue Hawaiian, it was priced reasonably at $9.50, and had its worth of alcohol in it. Just know that the emperors beef is on the sweeter side. The meat itself is very tender. The kung pao chicken is by far my favorite in the city. The meat is such good quality. The Cantonese pan fried noodles are crunchy so it's not for everyone. The shrimp is so big and juicy. They also boxed our leftovers for us, which I've usually only seen at high end restaurants. We just had a party for my mom's 80th birthday party and they got everything correct on the order which is important because we do not live near by. They even helped us carry our large order to our car. The spicy eggplant is a must try and my nephew ordered a salt and pepper shrimp my husband and I are hooked on now. I love the broccoli and shrimp and they even have vegetarian options for my mother. The Mushroom delight is delicious. We bring different friends here and they all love it. This was almost a 5 - the only thing that is we got the broccoli beef - the sauce was FANTASTIC- the meat just needed to be cooked longer that was the only thing keeping from a 5 - got the orange beef which was really good but the first time I have ever gotten orange beef from anywhere that didn't have a veggie or generally broccoli so that would have made it a hair better. New update: Decided to try them again six months later after saying I wouldn't order again. Well I should have followed my own advice. Called the restaurant to complain because and was told the cook made mistakes and that he was very sorry for the way the food was cooked. I wasn't offered a refund just a free dish if I returned on Wednesday (because they are closed on Tuesday) $67.44 in the garbage. I don't know what has happened with this restaurant but the food quality has gone down, and they have the never to barely give hot mustard or sweet and sour sauce with the order. Selling old dry food is not a very good thing to do. Management doesn't try to help because they want to keep your money regardless of complaints. Emperor's fried rice- very dry, chicken was old and hard, no beef added whatsoever. Potstickers- pan fried way too long was very hard to eat. Hot pepper beef- greasy and slimy.
