I've been here twice and have only had the bubble tea each time. No complaints on the bubble tea itself - I'm a huge fan! I absolutely love that they have so many variations and toppings available. I've stuck to my fave taro milk tea with bubbles at each visit and I can't complain. The reason for 3 stars is the service. The cashier and staff were very friendly on both visits, but there seems to be some large gap in communication between the cashier and those preparing the tea. I had an issue on both visits where my order was not communicated to those in the kitchen and I waited while people who ordered after me received their tea. Other than that, it's a great spot. They serve food also, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. read more

Ah yes, Joy Yee's. They continue to be the best place for bubble tea. Although many other places in Chinatown offer bubble tea, this is still number one. I don't get bubble tea anywhere else. Fresh fruit with tapioca and the right amount of sugar syrup, simply delicious. I have been going to Joy Yee's for the past 15 years and I appreciate that their bubble tea hasn't changed. The prices may have gone up a little but from my most recent trip this past weekend it looked like the cups are larger. Their menu for drinks has grown but the classics are still the best. I like their new location since it's larger and seats more people. Back in the day, the place was tiny where you were sitting elbow to elbow with the people next to you. Here is an important tip. Watch the time since they may run out of tapioca or simply want to close. Even if there is a long line, they will either tell you to go to Joy Yee Plus or just tell you, "No more" and wave their hands at you to shoo you away. read more

This review is for their smoothies only... I like how they set up the walk up window for smoothies so people wouldn't be crowding their restaurant. The menu was largely plastered on the side of the building - easily for folks to decide what concoction they want to have. Whenever I go to Chicago, I always make sure to eat at Joy Yee's at least once during my trip. I think on one trip to Chicago, my friends and I ate at Joy Yee's three times haha. Why is it that we love Joy Yee's so much? Most of the bubbleteas we get are delicious most of the time. Our favorite bubbleteas are anything with papaya, mango, lychee, or honeydew. The food is consistently good. Everything that we have tried has been yummy and holy cow the portions are huge! Staff are pretty accommodating and nice. One time we accidently spilled our bubbletea trying to shift the right bubbleteas to their rightful orderer and they made a new one right away, no charge! The dishes we have had recently are as follows: Spicy Korean Combination Noodles: I eat pretty spicy, so this was mild for me, but it was very yummy. It was filled with delicious seafood & meats and of course saucy noodles. I seriously had enough left over for 2 lunches. Pho: This portion of Pho is freaking huge, but good. I like the savoriness of the broth. It could have used a little more star anise & cinnamon flavor to had more depth to the broth, but it was better than pho I have had in Ann Arbor. It still doesn't beat Thuy Trang or momma's pho. Fried Vietnamese Calamari: Flavored with a spicy salt and fried onion and peppers, and accompanied by a sweet chili sauce, these crunchy squid tentacles makes for a great app to share with friends! French Cubed Beef: Soooo good! The Bo got this one and I was glad he did! The beef was tender and sauced perfectly. It reminded me of thit bo kho (Vietnamese sauteed/braised beef). Korean Spare Ribs: My sister always get this and I understand why because it is always so good. Tender and flavorful. I wish they would open up a Joy Yee's in Ann Arbor! I usually stop by Joy Yee whenever I'm in Chinatown and it never disappoints. The place is almost always packed so be prepared to wait a little bit. The menu at Joy Yee has a variety of Asian dishes, so you'll definitely find something that will fulfill your taste buds. We ordered 2 dishes and 1 appetizer. I got the stir fry udon noodles with beef brisket. It was super flavorful but a bit salty. Lots of meat in the dish though. The shabu shabu was good but a little bland. After adding some chili sauce to make it spicy it tasted a lot better. Plus there were a lot of other ingredients in the bowl that meshed together very well. The Szechwan won tons were very good too. Cooked just right so the delicate won ton didn't break at all. They also have an extensive list of drinks, smoothies, and bubble teas. There are hundreds of combinations due to the choices between tapioca bobas, popping bobas, jellys, mixed jellys, etc. The drinks are pretty tasty so people do come here just to get a drink. They have a section in the front and outside where people can order just drinks. Got bubble tea ADD? You've come to the right place. Joy Yee will keep your ADD satisfied with a never ending combination of teas, smoothies, bubbles, jellies, and toppings. I'm fairly certain that's not an exaggeration - the possibilities are legitimately endless. Which is of course why I always go for my signature mango black tea with half bubbles, half lychee jelly, and less ice, right? Womp. But I do at least try my friend's drinks, and they are all equally delicious. Some of my other favorites include the coconut smooth (so decadent!), and the taro tea. Good value too for the price - about $5 for a large (one size only, to my knowledge) drink. And bonus, they're delicious and so it's a case of quantity actually equally quality. However, we stopped in a few days back to grab lunch. So glad we did as this place is a total steal, HUGE lunch portions, with egg roll and hot and sour soup included. They were trying to kick people out and gave an unwelcoming feeling around 9:00pm, they were sweeping the floor and stacking chairs already. 2 star is for the portion of the traditional beef stone pot ($12). I would give a negative star if possible for the eel stone pot because it came with 2 thin and small slices of eels, even though it was more expensive ($15). The drinks are over priced and mediocre. If I had the saw the all you can eat hot pot next door for under 20 bucks, I would have went there instead. read more

They have a million combinations, they always use fresh fruit (how do they always have fresh, ripe, sweet fruit all season, all year long? ) They make the best smoothies, I don't know how they do it. Ordered the huge seafood udon to share with my date (just the two of us). It was alright. The soup flavor was doable. It was pretty sweet. There's occasionally some crustacean shells that were chipped off... The temperature of it was doable and it wasn't scalding hot. The waiters here try really to speak English when you order. It was a crowded place when I came in. Tables were a bit sticky, and the seats were plastic and flimsy. I felt unsafe even though I don't weigh that much... This REALLY is the best place to get boba. If I lived here, I would be here almost everyday! There are at least 2 pages of different options: there's tapioca balls, mini pearls, pudding, popping boba etc. Also, the have freeze and smoothie options. You really can customize any drink and they are really willing to make it for you. One boba drink is around $4.50. My favorite is a strawberry-kiwi boba smoothie with tapioca balls. Most places, the tapioca balls immediately harden from the smoothie but somehow Joy Yee's tapicoa stays soft and chewy all the way to the last sip. We had a spontaneous group on 11 show to for a later supper on Sunday after C2E2. They weren't very busy, and seated us promptly upstairs. They were cool about writing several separate tickets for the table to keep bill-paying easy! Orders were taken quickly and the delicious boba drinks and dishes arrived so fast -- which was perfect because several of us had waited past our usual meal times. Many types of dishes were ordered - dry noodle salad, a deep noodle soup, a couple of stone bowls - and everyone seemed to enjoy their food thoroughly. I had a salt and pepper silken tofu that comes with a side of rice. The tofu was cooked lightly, which was ideal for me, but it could have used more black and white pepper from the 'pepper' part of the description. The saltiness was great, present and not overpowering. My strawberry milk tea seemed light on the strawberry flavor, but it's possible my choice of drink was overwhelmed by the dish I was having. I'll try it again on another visit. Minus 1 star for the beat-up condition of their bathroom area and walls in the space. I know they have a ton of traffic, but for such a popular place I'd like to see them keep up with their site maintenance more. read more

I have only enjoyed their tapioca freezes. Everything is made with fresh fruit and I usually get the mango, or strawberry. I tried a kiwi one once and the seeds were more problematic than I would have imagined. There is usually a long line for the drinks, but it moves pretty fast. read more

Joy Yee in Chinatown has grown over the years and expanded throughout the Chicago area. The location in Chinatown is 3 times the size it use to be when I started coming here years ago. The addition of the smoothie station was the best idea ever! When I think of Joy Yee, I think of their freshly made bubble tea. A wide range of flavors, from the traditional milk tea to the distinctive durian flavor. Try if you dare! My favorite flavors are lychee and watermelon or redbean and cocunut! The food is decently priced for the quantity and quality, but the bubble tea is what makes me come back time after time! The bubble tea is large and almost a meal itself, so eat less and drink more. The restaurant is located in Chinatown and has a fresh, lovely, and fruity smell upon arrival! Ambiance - Joy Yee's is brightly colored inside and out. The layout of the restaurant is definitely casual, with many tables and seats lined up closely to one another. I went here for lunch and did not have any expectations. Food (3.5-4 stars) - We ordered the French Style Beef Cubes, chicken and shrimp Pad Thai, Soft Shell Crab Curry with rice, and hot stone bowl Bibimbap. The food arrived promptly after we ordered, perfectly in time for my hungry tummy. My favorite was the Bibimbap! The beef was deliciously seasoned and the slightly burned rice mixed with all the other ingredients were divine. My next favorite was probably tied between the beef cubes and soft shell crab curry. Both were flavorful and tasty. I would NOT recommend the Pad Thai. It lacked tofu, enough bean sprouts and worst, there was hardly any FLAVOR. I was quite disappointed with the noodles, especially since I ordered this dish....For 4 people, we each ordered a dish and was overwhelmed with HUGE portions. The 4 dishes was enough to feed 8 people. Order less and save your stomach for the.... Smoothies/Tapioca Drinks (3 stars) - We ordered a cappuccino freeze with coffee jelly, chocolate freeze with coffee jelly, rose milk tea with regular tapioca/pearls/boba (I can't make up my mind what to call them), and another coffee based drink. Although our drinks looked a mucky brown color... it tasted just as we ordered. These drinks were nothing special. I think they're more known for their fruit smoothies which I regret not ordering. I'll probably order a fruity drink next time before I fully judge their smoothie/boba drinks. I would rate this place a 3.5, but I give them 4 for pretty quick service! P.S. They have 2 pages worth of tapioca tea menu ranging from avocado freeze to kiwi. I got their guava and lychee freeze with tapioca, and it was delicious. Their food is pretty americanized though. The ong choy veggie was little bit too salty. I liked their red snapper, but their Korean beef chap chad was pretty dry. The food here is pan-asian. Ranging from thai curry to pho to Mongolian beef. This is pretty much an institution in Chicago Chinatown. It's a fusion Chinese restaurant. YUGEEEEE menu ranging from pho to fried rice to seafood. They have every dish but don't do anything particularly well. My go to dish here is always the beef cube with tomato rice. Beef is always tender and well seasoned. There's just something magical about rice and ketchup. The boba has really gone down hill since I've been coming here from my undergrad days. Try the strawberry lychee (best combination ever). After visiting this place twice my opinion still stands on how it is not great. The pricing is very high for the quality of food. The food lacked lots of flavoring and the sesame chicken had cartilage in almost every piece. It was not the most appetizing food. I recommend going to other places and avoiding this place. Not only was the food not the best, but the bill for 3 plates was $76!!!? They add a regular tax fee and an additional 18% service gratitude fee. When being seated there is no sign of there being an additional fee to your bill. Overall, I don't recommend and encourage to visit other better places in the area. read more

I had the best sesame chicken of my life here! No exaggeration. The chicken was high quality, had the perfect crunch never experienced on sesame chicken before, and was covered in the sweet orange sauce. The platter was HUGE and fed three people easily. I walked over to Joy Yee from the Tinley Park Convention Center and thought it was a pleasant lunch experience. It took a while for our waiter to come take our order but the place was pretty slammed from everyone else from TPCC with the same idea. While the food was alright, the bubble tea was phenomenal! A good portion of their menu is just a fantastic selection of bubble teas and blends. If I'm ever at TPCC again, I'll definitely return to Joy Yee for lunch. read more

As for food, I always pick the seafood kimchi udon noodle dish. Fish, crabmeat, mussels, and jumbo shrimp stir fried in kimchi and spices. YUM! As for service.... Well it's limited. They kinda just serve you and give you your bill.. Not really talkative about the menu... And they all just huddle next to each other. But you can't expect much "fine dining" in Chinatown. This place is still so good after so many years....last time I tried it it's probably 6 yrs ago! They remodeled and expanded the place or something cuz it looked very different now. Anyways, we had the baked curry seafood in a coconut...which I even ate the coconut after I finished the curry. There are scallops, shrimps, mussels, squids... a lot of seafood! We also ordered a cold noodle plates with pork.. very good too. What I like the best is the drink, I tried the taro drink with mini tapioca, and they are not just mini, it's not even like tapioca, they have a crunch to it when you bite into it (like tobiko) which I never had before. It's tasty as always, tender beef, delicious curry sauce! Oh, there is another reason I keep coming here: the size of the dish is HUGE! So I can have it 2 times for just paid once....=___,= My boy friend had Thai basil chicken fried rice. He thought it's too dry and also not flavorful for me.  The Vietnamese spring rolls we had for appetizer were fine, but I thought some of them are over cooked...There are some pork, turnip, agaric, and Chinese vermicelli in them (well, I'm not pretty sure about this...). OMG SO GOOD! This asian restaurant is smack in the middle of Chicago Chinatown, and it's always busy, whether you're going dine-in, or just buy some bubble tea (the menu is ridiculous). Most of the food is very reasonably priced and affordable, with the portions being HUGE! When my family dined here (4 people), we were all going to order 4 dishes thinking that the portions were for one person each. Then, the waitress took our order and warned us of how big the portions were, and we ended up with 2 dishes. We almost didn't finish a big portion of pho with another huge portion of fried rice. Including that, we also ordered 3 bubble teas, which were great! Our order came to a little under $50...pretty great meal for a great price!
