The menu was small so not many options to choose from. They don't have any baked chicken or yams. However, I ordered the fish and it was delicious. Very tasty and plentiful. I want to come back and try their brunch on the weekend. They have a nice-sized bar area where you can eat also. Note: They have outdoor seating. You can find Valet parking on the street or park in parking lots. I don't know what took me so long to visit Joyce! I loved it so much I went twice this past week for brunch and happy hour. The ambiance is beautiful, the food is flavorful and the service is excellent. When I went for brunch they had an oxtail dish with egg, grilled onion and sweet potato. I can't find the name of it on the menu but it was a 10/10! The caviar and chips were delicious as well. I love that they have special events with guest chefs each month. For parking there is metered street parking but I also found a structure around the corner at 625 w 8th that charged a $6 flat rate. read more

Found this restaurant through the Red Dining Book, had a cute interior/vibe but unfortunately they only had bar and outdoor patio availability (as they said, however there were quite a few empty tables we saw during the 10 minutes we waited). We chose to sit on the patio - it has a partial divider from the street but still pretty noisy/distracting so wouldn't recommend it). We ordered the Caesar, octopus, catfish, and hush puppies. Octopus was great and would highly recommend. Caesar is a classic freshly made dressing with anchovies on top. Catfish and hush puppies are passable (should've tried the cornbread over the hush puppies). Our catfish portion was TINY for a 31$ entree, it was good but wouldn't get it again due to the portion . The octopus, catfish, and hush puppies all came with various mayo based sauces (maybe considered aoili?) - which got really heavy by the end of the meal. Our waiter Rob was absolutely AMAZING!! He was friendly, polite, attentive, and responsive. And I always appreciate a waiter who knows their menu. The food was delicious except for the Mac n Cheese. I've been eyeing Joyce for quite some time and I was eager to come for Dine LA 2026! Our server shared that the Dine LA menu featured their most popular dishes which was such a treat! Everything was so delicious and full of flavor. The harvest salad was fresh with a balance of sweet & salty. The cajun shrimp hush puppies were small wonderful salty and cheesy bites to prep us for the more decadent and very cheesy, smoked mac & cheese. For the main we went with the Nashville Fried Catfish (the alternative tempting choice was the shrimp & grits). It was good but in my opinion/personal preference, better with some of their red hot sauce on top. Lastly, the meal ended with beignets covered in powdered sugar. My only feedback with the food is that the beignets could be a bit fluffier. Aside from that, everything was great! From the food to the excellent customer service to the beautiful dinner ambient lighting- such a great first time experience at Joyce! Loved it! We were able to reserve a party of 11 for a Sunday afternoon at 1p. So I loved that we could do that via OpenTable. There is an open and airy ambiance, and the decor is somewhat neutral and soft. Nick was our server and was great. We did have to wait a bit, but it wasn't an uncomfortable or overly long wait between his visits. It also appeared that he and maybe 1 or 2 servers were handling the entire place. We ordered a plethora of items to start, and they were all excellent; cornbread, biscuits, and fried green tomatoes. The condiments for the biscuits were a little iffy, primarily because the jelly is a spicy/sweet combo that a few of us did not enjoy. The sparkling wine / champagne used for the mimosa had a good taste to it and did not give us headaches, so that's a plus! The OJ and pomegranate cubes were a nice touch as well. I will say the entrees fell short for many of us. We had chicken and waffles, French toast and shrimp and grits. Everyone said these items were just okay, which was a little surprising considering how good our starters were. The chicken was a little dry and lacked seasoning. The waffle had something missing - it was too oily for some reason and lacked flavor. The French Toast had a hard consistency and did not have much flavor either. One person did enjoy the sausage, gravy, and biscuits. The portion looked small, but he said it was fine. It came with 4 of the same bite-sized biscuits used for the starter. We also ordered the mac n cheese, and it was top-notch! I've never had chives in my Mac n cheese, but it worked. It comes in a small cast iron skillet and was hot! Overall, excellent dish. The greens were just okay. All in all, we had a great experience and would still go back, despite the entree let down. Had such a great time visiting Joyce with my brother, our bestie and her baby girl. The hostess kindly greeted us and overall, all staff were very attentive and accommodating, especially having a little one with us. Not a huge space, but well done in my opinion. What we ordered: Drinks: mimosas for the table - bottle of champagne with flavored ice cubes (we did peach, orange and watermelon juice cubes and mixed and matched). We were very pleased! Small plates: Cast Iron Mac & Cheese, Edisto Island Cornbread, Sunday Collards - I will be back for this trio alone. So good! And I'm very picky about greens. I usually make my own or only eat my mother's lol. With deep southern roots (Mississippi) we don't play when it comes to collard greens lol. I was surprised how much I enjoyed them here. Large Plates: Nashville Hot Fried Catfish, Low Country Shrimp & Grits, Curry Braised Beef & Sweet Potato Hash - We had mixed reviews here. I can't speak to the shrimp and grits because I have a shellfish allergy, but brother and bestie seemed to enjoy them. The braised beef dish was a little on the sweet side to me. With caramelized onions, sweet potato and the curry, just be mindful it's a sweeter dish. Because we ordered many other things, it was balanced. But if I ordered the dish alone, it may have been too much. The mixed reviews I previously read on the catfish are fair, but I really enjoyed it! I'm also picky about catfish and if you prefer it fried hard, this is a little softer, not super crispy or overly breaded. I wanted to start off by saying my experience at Joyce was mid at best. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a 2/5 stars . The food was cool, but definitely not worth the hype. The sides were honestly disappointing the mac and cheese and greens had barely any flavor and definitely needed seasoning. The chicken and catfish were the only things that saved it a little the seasoning on those was actually good. But what really dropped the score was the customer service. Our waiter, Foster, had a nasty attitude from the start. Not welcoming at all honestly felt like we were bothering him just by being there. He was short, dismissive, and didn't seem like he wanted to help at all. When my sister asked if the catfish could be cooked extra crispy, he just said, "It is crispy," with no effort to be polite or helpful. Like... okay?? You could've said that a whole different way. We ordered the rotisserie chicken, fried chicken, Nashville catfish, mac and cheese, and greens. Again, mains were decent, sides need serious help. The puree and brussel sprouts that accompanied the beef were complemented with the gastrique. I'm a sucker for cooked carrots, so to see them as an available side made me as happy as how well crafted they were. The small Mac and cheese portion was generous and made with cavatapi noodles and the right amount of cheese. Word of warning on the M/C, is if you are used to a saucy, orangey version of the dish Joyce's version may not satisfy you. I wouldn't call what Joyce is serving as Soul Food, but as deeply homey fare. The wait staff is gracious and attentive enough. Our server's recommendations were spot on. I was brought here on a date on a Saturday night and it was poppin. The music was great but loud AF like a club so it's difficult to have a conversation inside. The inside was very cute and had a bougie lounge-type feel. The menu lacked to me, I wish they offered more dishes. I do not like how they serve the food as the food is ready. We got all of our sides before the chicken so of course by the time the chicken came, our sides were gone because there was a long wait between dishes. Overall, the food was okay. Nothing I had that night stood out to me and the food is expensive as well. Our order was wrong because our waiter could not hear our order properly over the music. It was V day, with no resy, but he managed to snug us in at the bar. While LA prices are really beginning to get annoying, this place was amaze. Joyce has been on my list for a while, and I'm so grateful that I was finally knock it off of my list with my dear coworker friend. The restaurant opens at 5pm for dinner, so we were just about the first people there. But it did start to fill up later in the evening, so I recommend making a reservation for any day of the week. The interior was beautifully decorated for Christmas and felt very cozy. It was very festive and I loved the close attention to detail in their decorations, like the Christmas train on the table! It felt very welcoming! Our server was attentive and checked in on us appropriately. We didn't try their Christmas cocktails but did order a few of their food items: - Peruvian scallops (4) - they were ok, slightly disappointing. I found it a bit bland, a touch of sea salt might've brought out the flavors more - cast iron Mac and cheese ($21) - for the price, I expected delicious cheese flavors, and yes, that's what I got. It was a fancy Mac and cheese with generous cheesy flavors cooked and melted properly. It met my expectations. - Maple butternut squash - I know it has 'maple' in the name but it was overwhelmingly sweet for me. First bite was delicious, then after several more bites, I was kind of over it. - Blue crab gratin - this was probably my favorite dish. I liked the home-made crunchies that came with it, and it was a nice texture between the gratin and the crunch. - Beignets - these were piping hot when they came out. It came with tres leches dip and jam, I personally liked the jam more! These were quite generous in portions, so definitely share-worthy. It was a nice paring with my espresso, which adorably was served to me in a festive Santa (who unfortunately had a chipped nose!) Overall, it was a lovely dining experience with my friend. I really wanted to like Joyce. They hooked me via a targeted ad. I made a reservation same day and looked forward to the experience. Sunday Supper is a good value. Chicken was good, honey and biscuits were great. Mac and cheese was disappointing -- kinda lacked flavor, they were fully relying on the cheese. Greens were aight. We asked to upgrade to the oxtail greens and pay the difference and they said no -- which felt like a missed business opportunity and not very accommodating. Drinks were flavorful but VERY weak. Service was off. Told waiter I have a seafood allergy, and later he came back to confirm my nut allergy. I asked about the Sunday Supper cocktail and he didn't know what it was. When I asked again, he said the bar hadn't gotten back to him yet -- that feels like something you should know before service starts. Took 3 attempts to get an answer and the drink. I only got one. Had he known off the bat I would have had time to have 2. All good saved me $ They were adjusting the overhead lighting while we were eating, which was distracting. Shouldn't the vibe be set before the doors open? First bill they brought was wrong. There's also a 4% service charge added to all tables and it doesn't go to staff. The decor is kind of a mix of boho, modern and prohibition, but it doesn't fully land -- feels a little like an identity crisis. Music was good, crowd skewed younger. It was not buttery or flavorful just milled corn with condiments on the side. - CAST IRON MAC & CHEESE $21 (sharp cheddar, blockhouse stout, chives n cheese) Looked delicious. Nice toasting on the outside. However, the taste wasn't as appetizing as pictured. And for the price I was expecting more or tastier - CRISPY SMOKED DUCK CONFIT $29 (grilled frisée, jamaican jerk, passionfruit habanero glaze) Let me be honest, the description of this meal was not uber appealing, however, the server raved that it was super tasty. When the dish arrived, I almost fell out laughing. another tiny plate with one piece of duck and a handful of lettuce. It was over fatty and only contained two bites. NOTE: All the above dishes are listed under "PLATES TO SHARE". So unless you are getting a seafood platter (priced at $65, $149, $275 respectively), you'll need to order multiple dishes to complete a dinner meal for two people. The crowd seemed lively, but the seating doesn't really accommodate for mingling, so wouldn't fully recommend this place as somewhere to meet a host of new people either. The service was friendly and timely and our server helped us to decide what to get since it was our first time. I ended up getting the biscuits and gravy and was surprised that they were little tiny almost bite-sized (ok big bite-sized) biscuits but they were still really tasty (it came with four, which was more than enough for me). It's been a few weeks and I'm still thinking about the cornbread so I anticipate returning soon! They have a family style menu. We had cornbread, greens, mac 'n cheese, shrimp and grits, fried catfish with fried pickles on the side. It was all good but the cornbread and catfish were the star of the show for us. It was my husband's birthday and they brought him vanilla ice cream that taste homemade with brown sugar sauce.
