Plenty of people have mentioned how good the sushi is and they're right, awesome, whatever, but here's the thing no one knows: their brunch is amazing. You know how everyone's always all wah, there's no good brunch places in JP? Centre St. Cafe has a line and Sorella's is a gimmick and Alchemist sucks and you end up at the Dogwood forgetting what you ate before you even eat it so here I am to save the day: JP mfin' Seafood, man. They got sushi if you want it, and sushi is actually awesome to eat when you're hung over, and if you're not hung over you shouldn't be at brunch, but they also have normal brunch food like omelets and eggs benedict and their hollandaise is top-notch. I shouldn't even be telling you this, cause I hate when people find out things that I used to be the only dude who knew. You know what? If I go there next week and there's a line, I'm going to go down the line and be like dude are you here because you read my review? and if you say yes, I get to cut you. The sushi rice is appallingly sweet. The tempura is the worst I've ever had - heavy and dense instead of light like tempura should be. The dashi broth tastes synthetic, not savory. The tamago is obviously mass-produced, not made in house. Like everything else, the chirashi is a woefully generic version. A bowl of chirashi should yield prettily arranged morsels of varied fish and garnishes or pickles. My chirashi was slices of only four kinds of fish creating a dull layer over that sickeningly sweet rice. No vegetables. "Specials" were the exact same specials that were on the menu when we were here over a year ago. I hate to give one-star reviews because I know there are hardworking people behind every business, but it upsets me to see restaurants serve food so obviously lacking quality and care and still please their customers. read more

Such a terrible experience that I vow to never return again. Just moved to JP and hoped to find a great neighborhood place for dinner. I was utterly disappointed by JP Seafood Cafe. Tea is probably the cheapest etiquette to welcome your guests/customers on a cold winter night, especially if you're a Japanese restaurant. Now, I don't mind paying for my tea, but please give us a decent tea cup to drink our tea without burning our fingers when we are paying for it. Apparently restaurant ran out of tea mugs/cups, and gave us these glasses that are not suitable to lift up with hot liquid. Awful start. Miso soup tasted like salty water that they just scooped out from their fish tank. Miso texture was grimy. Temperature was cool (not hot as soup is supposed to be). The broth smelled fishy. There was exactly 1 small tofu piece when I searched the sea water in my bowl. It was clearly the bottom bit in the pot. I asked the waitress if they could help us somehow dilute the soup to make it edible (maybe just simply add some hot water to help washing out the smell, the salt, and the grimy-ness.) She came back with the soup tasted worse than before, b/c it seemed like they just added a few drops of cold water. The soup still tasted like fish water, except this time the waitress had her fingertip DIPPED in the soup when she handed to us. GROSS! My husband actually suggested maybe we should pour our hot tea liquid into the miso soup to help balance out the fish flavor/heat. Maybe we should have done that and call it a night. I couldn't finish more than 1/4 of my Miso Grilled Salmon dinner -- the noodle was soggy, miso flavor reminded me of that fish tank stuff from earlier. salmon was overcooked (it tasted like a dry piece of cardboard soaked in miso fish water.) Had a wonderful takeout experience last night! We had five rolls--both spicy tunas, shrimp tempura, negi sake, and negi hama--and everything was fresh and delicious. I love the option to have the rolls cut into 8 pieces, that's a game-changer. Fish was obviously fresh and the rice was perfect. Miso soup was also tasty. I am writing this review for myself and my boyfriend. The reason for the single star rating is that the last two times my boyfriend ate at JP Seafood he got very sick the next day. We both ate their this past winter and were nauseous for the next 24 hours. We assumed this was a fluke and my boyfriend took his daughter there for a "daddy daughter date" for lunch this past Sunday. She has a gluten allergy and got simple sweet potato and avocado rolls. Thankfully, she had no ill effects. HOWEVER, my boyfriend, AGAIN got very sick for the following 24 hours. He ordered the Godzilla Maki, Spicy Tuna Maki and the Double Trouble (?) So I've mentally avoided JP Seafood for awhile, mainly because the straight-forward banality of the name calls to mind other obviously-titled JP establishments such as "MEATLAND" (which I have never been into yet remain perpetually fascinated by). A slightly snazzier, more appropriately themed name might have suggested that this is not a place where you get deep fried hush puppies or trout heads by the pound. Lesson learned. And despite my wariness, I enjoyed my evening. It was a quiet, unassuming, and generally pleasant atmosphere. I appreciated that the tables were spaced far enough apart that you could have private conversations and weren't distracted by anyone else's wierd eating habits. My drink and entree orders was taken promptly and delivered properly--the service had a nice pace. My shrimp pad thai was very tasty, well worth its reasonable price, and my date enjoyed her sushi selections. I wasn't blown away or razzle-dazzled, but I left full and in a very good mood, so seriously--what else could I ask for? Once got a big bowl of vegetable japchae (Pan Fried Clear Potato Noodles) and wolfed it down so fast I felt that pleasurable sense of shame that comes from consuming something utterly delicious in a disgustingly voracious way. Got it the next time too actually. Controlled myself better but it was just as good. Also, I appreciate well balanced spicyness, so when I order something "hot/spicy" I get pretty put off if something advertised as such actually has all the vigor of mayonaise . . .thankfuly JP Seafood does not mince words so 'heat' lovers...here's a heads up that they serve it up with the balance of heat and flavor you might be looking for but so rarely actually get! I'm probably about a green belt in sushi but will say I have always enjoyed it here, but have yet to be wowed. THE best miso soup I've had yet. read more

Also, in a neighborhood that is fairly competitive when it comes to fish & chips (Galway house a couple doors down comes to mind), JP Seafood makes an incredible classic Fish & Chips. JP Seafood is one of the best lunch spots in Boston. The restaurant is packed almost every day at lunch, but the service is fast and extremely friendly. Most of the waitstaff have worked there for many years, so there is a very high level of professionalism and work ethic that seems to get passed on to new waitstaff as well. The sushi is excellent, the obento boxes and other lunch specials delightful. Udon soups are tasty and hot, well flavored. My father is a big fan of the bimbimbop, which is a bit too eclectic for my taste. Food is always fresh, pleasantly presented, and full of flavor. Even my father, who almost never dines out, is a big fan and a relatively frequent customer! In fact, I think it is the only restaurant that he's ever gone to more than a couple times in the past 25 years. For those who have trouble finding parking on Centre Street, try the lot in back of Bank of America or the side streets; there's plenty of parking to be had. read more

I *want* to like this place. I NEED to like it, since it is adjacent to my office, but I just can't get into it. I have tried to make it work, but I can't get excited about JP Seafood Cafe no matter how hard I try. The sushi is average, the atmosphere is blah, but the service is pretty decent. Like standard American seafood places, there are just too many sushi alternatives nearby to settle for mediocrity. One word of advice though, do the lunch box special if you are looking for a filling lunch. Good value and a good spread. Finally got to try the sushi place that all my JP friends are always raving about, but I'm now under the impression that they love it so much simply because they have no other options to choose from. I might be a little spoiled living in Brookline, what with all the great Asian restaurants around, but there's simply nothing special enough about JP Seafood that would warrant a visit from afar (and yes, if you don't have a car, JP is VERY far from Brookline). On my visit, the rolls were fresh, but forgettable, and even the famous Dal Bibimbop (rice, chicken, and vegetables served in a sizzling clay pot) failed to leave much of an impression. It would have been completely flavorless, in fact, if my friend and I hadn't been given a side of hot sauce to douse it with. Oh well, back to Genki Ya it is. read more

The food overall was not a good representation of good Japanese food. Not going back based on simply this one fact: My bf and I ordered the uni which came out brown. I was taken aback at the mere sight of it. I should have sent it back immediately. In hindsight I don't know what compelled me to try it but I did. It was so bad we immediately spit it out in our napkins. This is the point where service could have saved that experience. We let our server know that the uni had gone bad. No sushi place should ever, ever have pre-cut fish... The first time I went was lunch and I was blown away by my sashimi lunch special. Every piece was incredible and I had a great conversation with the sushi chef. I knew I had to go back. So I went with a friend a few months later for dinner. My sushi was tasteless and the rice was awful (too much rice, warm, too dense). Majorly disappointed. But I didn't give up -- as a happy JP resident, I took another friend, this time we sat at the bar, and it was a disaster. My pork katsu was dry. The rolls were tasteless and clumsily packed. Here's the worst part. There were large portions of tuna, salmon, mackerel, and red snapper PRE-CUT! Some were sitting in small puddles of their own juice. By the way this time was a different sushi chef and his skills were just plain bad. I watched him during the entire dinner -- everything from the knife to the rolling, to the washing of hands (not enough)... I had enough of it. At least I now know why my fish was tasteless the second time I went. And now I know that I will never go back, nor will I ever recommend this place. read more

My first time at JP Seafood Cafe was quite a memorable experience. Boston (even though close the Atlantic) isn't necessarily known for good sushi. Why? Who knows. However, a pleasant surprise was JP Seafood Cafe. I went there with my boyfriend and we sat outside on a nice sunny day. The waitstaff was friendly and the sushi choices went from being very complex creative rolls (salmon, lime, cilantro with homemade hot sauce) to simple yet fresh. The hamachi (yellowtail) was extremely buttery and fresh. We ordered one and quickly had another order in after our first bite. The Sexy Shrimp was a unique appetizer; wrapped with thin and crispy potato strips. All the food washed down nicely with a cold Sapporo. I'd gladly recommend this place to anyone looking around for good sushi in Boston. And we'll be back soon enough too. read more

This is probably the best restaurant in JP. Now, to be sure, JP isn't foodie heaven and JP Seafood isn't going to get mistaken for L'Espalier. But the atmosphere is unpretentious, the prices are fair, the menu is right-sized and the fish is fresh. There is half-decent chicken but, really, you should take a clue from the fact that "seafood" is IN THE NAME. More conclusions about JPS: They care about presentation, seem to care about healthfulness, and do NOT give you ginormous-sized portions. Are there things that could be better? Oh, I guess. They could have big comfy booths instead of utilitarian tables and chairs. They could have a snappy array of side dishes. And would it kill them to have a dessert menu? Still, the bottom line is that this is a place that concentrates on what they are good at: making tasty and creative sushi and serving a solid line-up of cooked fish. read more

A SMALL space with PHENOM sushi! A group of 8 headed here for my buddy's 25th birthday extravaganza - CALL AHEAD for reservations on a large party!!! We were seated in the back corner (restaurant is really on big enough to have one 2'x2' table on either side of the narrow center aisle - good photos on website) - it was a tight squeeze, but we were all good friends and didn't mind the close proximity. I don't eat fish, but do love my noodles, veg, and tofu - so we placed two orders: MY food....and then two sushi boats....insane. *[my order] To start, Agedashi (fried tofu w/tempura sauce 4.50$): the tofu wasn't as firm as I would prefer, but the dish was served hot and satisfied my fried tofu craving. Then on to the Oshinko Maki (6 piece Japanese Pickle roll); the rolls were not tight/were hard to eat in one bite - a little sloppy, but very delicious! I ALSO tried my first Sake at this birthday dinner: I tried the Peach Sake (sweet and much more potent than I had anticipated - had me red-cheeked and giggling). **[THE BOATS!]**: Holy S - two boats and two "skippers" worth of sushi c-o-v-e-r-e-d our two tables! I know that they ordered: Dragon Maki, Spider Maki, Boston Maki, and Godzilla Maki (plus several others). This was more than enough to share for seven people; I gathered that the Godzilla Roll (Jumbo Shrimp Tempura w/Avocado, Spicy Mayo &Scallion) was a favorite. *As JP Seafood's "birthday gift" to my friend, they brought him out a "sushi surprise" - normally, this phrase would freak me out. But our server was extremely friendly and presented the little plate with a big grin (she even helped us sing happy birthday to the plate which featured a smiley face painted in sauce). No one knows what went into those rolls, but chop sticks were flying in hopes to snag up the last piece (delicious!). Our bill was *gulp* impressive....but for a large party on a Friday night, literally a BOAT LOAD of sushi and sake to boot, and great service... it really wasn't too terrible. A bad 2-star experience at JP Seafood Cafe ended up turning into a 4-star-worthy one! I ordered take-out for myself and some friends from JP Seafood Cafe. It was ready in 20 minutes, which is much much faster than other Japanese take-outs or deliveries I've had in Boston. Unfortunately, when I got home we realized that our order was wrong... completely wrong. I called and they said they gave me the wrong "Jessica" order (because they didn't look at the last name). The guy on the phone said he'd deliver it immediately, and I assumed he would take forever; however, he was at our door in less than 10 minutes! He said we could keep the other order, which was incredibly nice! In the end, we had delicious sushi and paid very little for it thanks to the good heart of the staff at JP Seafood Cafe! Definitely can't beat their customer service and the food is great, too! A win all around! read more

The three or four meals I've had here have been inconsistent. One was a lunch where I ordered the bento box, which was decent but bland. Most recently I had the heated bibimbop dish, which was more satisfying, and some tempura that was quite good. TIP: Make sure you go on a Tuesday or Friday when they get their shipment of fresh fish, and if you go after 9 PM you can have fun with Benny and order stuff that isn't on the menu too! First I have to say that I do not like sea food all that much and generally I stay away from sushi and such stuff but JP seafood definately has choises of other yummy things, so I am strictly basing my review on a couple of those things. I definately love their Grilled Salmon and of course the plum wine! Good service. It was a busy weeknight, yet we got seated sooner than planned. Food came out in a timely fashion. Sushi was fresh, as was avocado in my maki ( a lot of sushi places neglect the importance of non-brown avocado). Dining companion had tofu teriyaki- very good teriyaki sauce, salty rather than sweet. VEGANS: You can get various veggie sushi here, and the ok-dol bi bim bap without egg (the hot sauce is vegan). And possibly some other things. The pad thai cannot be made vegan because the sauce is pre-made--they can make you a vegan/gluten-free noodle dish, but as the host explained, "it wouldn't be pad thai." I like this place. If you're calling in an order for takeout, you can request that they leave out the chopsticks, napkins and soy sauce if you don't need them (it's encouraged to reduce waste). read more

Went there today after about 8 years. The food is solid, but not a good as I remember. I went back thinking that I was going to have the BEST ok-dol bibimbop. It was fine. The sushi was fine. Ohhhhh JP Seafood, why do you make it so EASY for me to only eat "sushi" with deep fried shit it it.... I've had nary a chunk of raw fish since I moved to Ye Olde Boston! What I'm really talking about here is the Godzilla roll. I'm pretty sure the "magical spicy sauce" previously mentioned by Quinn E is made from some type of methamphetamine, or other highly addictive drug, like mayo. I was first introduced to the Godzilla roll the very first time I went to JP seafood, and "trying new things" has been out of the question ever since. If you're into "real" sushi, my manfriend insists that it's quite edible. Plus, everyone who works there is super nice, you can get a beer, and I've only had to wait for a table ONCE. I'm glad this was the first place I ate in JP, and that it's good, cause if it wasn't I woulda been tempted to move away immediately. read more

I knew I should be coming out to JP more often for food. Why is JP so far and hard to get to from where I live?? But it is probably a good thing I don't live near JP Seafood Cafe since it isn't the cheapest sushi in the world, but it is just that good--I would quickly have no income whatsoever, unless you count income as how much sushi to take into your stomach! This sushi/Asian fusion spot is good. Four of us split the large party sushi boat which they claim feeds two people since it comes with only two miso soups, but it is a lot of sushi for two people. We also got an order of the pork shumai and two other small rolls and we were all plenty full. All of the fish tasted really fresh and you can tell it was made well, but the rice wasn't quite sticky enough to be true sushi rice in all of our rolls, since sometimes the rice fell apart in some of our pieces. But we got away with a drink each and eating sushi for about 25 per person which is pretty good if you ask me. And if sushi isn't for you, their udon noodles I saw walking out looked absolutely amazing and smelled great. So next time I go, since there will be a next time, this is what I will be getting. This place is nice inside to have a relaxing meal, or they also have a take out order window as well. Clearly JP Seafood Cafe knows how to please the masses. read more

JP Seafood was a wonderful stop in for lunch. The prices are difficult to beat, especially once you see the quantity and variety of food that you receive. I got the salmon bento box. The salmon itself was nicely cooked though not overly interesting. It also included miso soup, sushi, tempura, crockets, and rice. Everything was a good flavor, even if not overly interesting. However for the price, they did a great job. The wait staff is friendly and food arrives quickly. It's a great atmosphere inside the store with the aquariums. However don't expect much elbow room as the tables are on top of each other. read more

JP Seafood Cafe is probably my favorite place to eat on Centre St. It is our go-to spot for sushi. We have never been let down and it is definitely the best sushi for the value in the area. Try the Mango Tango roll - shrimp tempura, cucumber, mango, and cream cheese - I know it doesn't sound awesome but you won't be let down, we usually order two. Sometimes the miso soup doesn't come out hot enough but that is such a minor thing compared to the quality of the sushi that I can let it slide. The service at JP Seafood Cafe is great. The staff are all nice, friendly, and attentive, and I don't know if I have ever been to a restaurant that was so prompt and consistent about refilling water glasses (now when we eat elsewhere we always rate the water service compared to that of JP Seafood!) We even went to eat here on the day of Hurricane Irene - after calling ahead to see if they were open because there were widespread power outages. When we arrived, they informed us that they weren't seating anyone else (because of what was going on with the storm), but when we told them we had called they were more than happy to seat us and took good care of us even though service was slow. Also, I just found out that they take reservations for groups of 4 or more, which is cool because the place isn't huge and seating is limited. They are currently in the process of expanding, though, and while I don't know what to expect of the addition, I'm sure the restaurant will be larger and more comfortable. read more

This place was such a find. I barely have the words to explain my joy in not only finding a sushi place around the corner from me, but one that delivers and is moderately priced. Every menu item i've gotten from them (which i'd have to say is about 3/4 of the menu at this point) has been fresh and delicious. The tempura is a guilty pleasure and always shows up hot and crispy, despite the inevitable delivery time. (My order always shows up in 30 minutes or less.) Kind of a bummer that i have to wait until 5pm to order from them, but it's always worth the wait. Some faves: Sunshine Maki, Mango Tango Maki, and although it's not on the menu, the crab-avocado salad. The sushi chefs throw together a tasty combo of avocado, crab meat, lettuce, spicy mayo and tempura flakes that's to die for, and has me ordering at least once a week. read more

The atmosphere is very tranquil. On one side of the restaurant, there's a very long table in the middle of the room that seats 20 people. There is also a small bar with 5 seats. Now, on to the food... We started with the Sexy Shrimp Special - shrimp wrapped in fried potato strings with a homemade sweet and sour sauce. They were delicious. We also tried Shocking Maki (sushi) and it was subpar. It definitely wasn't fresh, was on the warm side and it came out way too fast. Considering that a great portion of the menu was sushi, this was very disappointing. I had "Teriyaki & Grill" salmon that came with vegetables and rice on a sizzling skillet- awesome! My best friend had Spicy Salmon StirFry. The presentation was great but she felt that the level of spice/hot was overwhelming. She described it as "All spice but not enough flavor."
