This is a frequent Thursday night stop for the dragon boat team. First, know that it will be loud. It's a bar. If you want to have a conversation you will be competing with the volume of everyone else. No surprise. It's a bar. The service is friendly but can very slow. Be prepared for a wait on drink refreshes and food delivery. Given the business of the Hy Iu Hee Hee, this shouldn't be a surprise. The food is quite good. The steak chili in particular is very good. I come here all the time and it's impossible to get a servers attention. I have to order my food and wine at the same time and I have to force myself on them every time. I've never seen a place with worse customer service. I was in food service for seven years. They have perfected the art of no eye contact. So probably about 20 or 19 years ago, this was the first place I ever had an alcoholic drink in public. Many of my friends were younger than me so I didn't get a chance to enjoy with many friends but I had one who luckily could go with me and we decided to start here. So I always remember that and this place is probably been here longer than I've even been on this planet. Randomly on a weekday morning after staying with family for the holidays, I decided to stop and see if they actually had breakfast. It was hard to tell from the website but they do! And it was darn good breakfast. I had The Benedict which was actually really good and completely worth it! My husband had one of their country fried steaks which was way more food than he thought he would get and he was very pleased with it. Definitely recommended for breakfast so far! Interesting switch. Toast was tasty except for the burnt parts. Red potatoes were good but cut so large not all of them were cooked through leaving some pieces crunchy. DH liked the bison sausage, flavorful without being over powering. We frequent the Time Out so it was cool to see another one of JP's restaurants. read more

I came here for my friends bday brunch. We had a big party, I think there was around 12 people. I don't expect everything to be perfect when you walk in with a big party and I can tell the waitress was overwhelmed. We are a pretty easy going group though. The food was great and I was very happy with my order. The staff was definitely friendly and trying so hard to keep up with our big table. I appreciate that. The lack of stars comes from two specific things: The first - we ordered mimosas and noticed half the table received a mini split with their cocktail (same one) and me and one other woman did not. I don't like inconsistency. I've been there before and always received the rest of the mini split. The second star missing is because after the food was delivered, one person never received their entree. It would t have been a big deal except we weren't checked on again until after everyone else was practically done eating and that was the first chance she had to ask for her meal in which case the waitress asked if she wanted it "to go" she said - "no, I'm very hungry, I'd like to eat it here please." It came, and it ended up being find. Again - nothing that bad, but definitely a few remarkable items. I would still return, just with a smaller party. I don't think they can handle big groups and that's ok. read more

A couple of weeks ago, a large number of us from a local club had its monthly club breakfast there. We had reservations but still it's a popular place and the fact that we were accommodated so quickly was amazing to me. Not only is this restaurant à great place to watch sports, it's located in a rural area so thé view out the windows is really nice. In addition, it was bustling but we were able to talk to each other without yelling. It was a wonderful place to talk and get to know new people. My breakfast was incredible and only came to about $25, and that was with a mimosa! Great value for the amazing food. We were given so much that I took half home for later. The waitress was running around like crazy and did a great job. I couldn't have done it myself. I will be taking people there for breakfast again, even though I don't live in the harbor. Well worth the small trip! I'd give it 10 stars if I could. read more

I recently went to dinner here with my husband. I had a chicken sandwich and two rum and cokes. I got up after I finished my food to use the restroom and noticed that there was a girl passed out laying on the bathroom floor. I went and notified staff and brought her wet wipes to help her clean herself up. I also notified the kids that she was sitting with that they needed to go help their friend. Once I went back to sit down with my husband , the bartender came over and informed me that we had been "over served" and we needed to leave. No mention of the stranger that I was trying to get help passed out on the bathroom floor. This place is notorious for over-serving minors and letting them drive home completely blacked out drunk. They need to lose their liquor license and if you want to argue with me, I'll gladly post the receipt from my dinner. You over served an underage girl and then then treated the only people trying to help like criminals. I hope you get shut down. read more

After 9 years I felt like an updated review was due. At this point I'm completely bias so not much to update. After 10 years living in the harbor this has become my only go-too staple. Jax and Sam take very good care of us. The food is 90% good, 5% great, and 5%... I cannot say that about a LOT of places in GH anymore. This is just a classic watering hole with decent food and slow service. Just the way I like it. But really, Costco should subsidize these guys. I have spent more money than I should have "eating" lunch before shopping. I doubt I'm alone. read more

We have been so blessed during our trip to Washington. My husband's stepmom lives in Gig Harbor so she brought us to this local watering hole. My bonus mom in law gave us an option to eat on the harbor over looking the water or a tavern. My husband picked tavern. Vibe: Cozy, cabin, outdoorsy, casual Service: Our waiter was nice. He had such a distinctive voice and personality. Service was a little slow though because we were a large party and so was another party. Food- I got the Wagyu burger with grilled jalapeños and tots. It was absolutely delicious, one of the best burgers I've ever had. Meat, veggies and brioche bun were good. My husband got the Hi Iu burger and it was huge. Of course I had to try a Gig Harbor Comet Pale Ale and it was delicious. Very smooth and flavorful. The sample platter is how everyone should do a sample platter, bacon wrapped prawns, bacon wrapped jalapeños, waffle fries..sauces to dip, ect. All 7 of us killed the plate. The fried pickles were a knock out. You can buy pull tabs to try to win $, from $ up to $2500 which is such a cool idea. Would have been a homerun and knocked out of the park, except they burned our nephew's Calzone and took forever to remake a new one. Otherwise, an amazing experience and I'd love to return to try other things. read more

Hy Lu Hee Hee means "Good Times and Lots of Laughter." The Hy lu Hee Hee is a Gig Harbor, WA local's hang-out that got it start as a Tavern in 1935. In 1958, the State condemned the tavern building and asked that the business vacate the premises, so they could build a new highway to Purdy. The business was rebuilt in 1983, in a new location, by new owners, which is where it has remained ever since. I have been visiting Gig Harbor since 1990, but my first visit to the Hy Lu Hee Hee wasnt until 5/19/23, which was a Friday. Although I arrived before 9 PM, the music was LOUD! I've decided to do a sound check via the app SoundPrint. It averaged 83 dB and got as high as 88 dB, which is considered Very Loud. That would've been acceptable if I had signed up to see a live band, but it wasn't. It was bad pre-recorded music, being played over blown speakers. I had to shout out my order. Everyone around me was shouting too. My server told me this is the norm after 9 PM. Unless you're already deaf, or enjoy the thought of shouting at your dining companions, I recommend you visit the Hy Lu Hee Hee earlier in the day. I have included a video, but it doesn't really do justice to how loud it was in person. I ordered one of the five house favorites on the menu, Fish + Chips ($17) - Breaded and Seasoned Wild Alaskan True Cod with Fries, House Slaw + Tartar Sauce. Compared to all the fish and chips I've eaten in Washington state, it was pretty standard fare. It was a generous portion of fries, and I liked the housemade tartar sauce. The coleslaw had decent flavor, but it obviously been made sometime ago and was swimming in liquid. Personally, I prefer Tides Tavern, which is another Gig Harbor local's hang out, but I'll be back at some point to visit the Hy lu Hee Hee. Next time, I'll just make sure to do it earlier in the day. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for 26 years for breakfast on Saturdays my friends and I either go there or we go to the garage in Bremerton. Today we sat at the large section at the restaurant our normal waitress that we have there as soon as you sit down, you get your coffee and your water and you can order today. We waited one hour for anybody to come over and give us water coffee. Finally, the waitress came over and gave us coffee and then walked away. We had to wait another 10 minutes to get her to come back to take our order then it's took 45 minutes for us to get our breakfast and it came out cold. We had ordered extra bacon. We didn't get one of our guests had ordered orange juice. He never got she never came back to offer us coffee another waitress went walking by with the coffee pot and was able to give us coffee. When the bill came, the extra bacon was on both of our bills and orange juice was on the other gentleman's bill. We said it we never got our extra bacon. He never got his orange juice. She said I'll take it off the bill so she took it off the bill. I asked her why it was taking so long to get Service and breakfast. She said they were busy. The other two servers that we normally see there one of them on a Saturday did the whole restaurant by herself and we never had to wait more than 10 or 15 minutes. This waitress was way over her head and she should've asked for help. I stopped and spoke to one of the other servers and it said why is it so bad today I said didn't you bother you to help her? I said yes we did and she said no she can handle it so I believe she was more interested in her tips and she wasn't service so the next week we're going back to the garage up in Bremerton. read more

When do many of gig harbor's restaurants seek to be going down hill the Hy Lu just keeps getting better. It's clean (for a bar) the staff is awesome, no matter the time of day or who's waiting on you (though our personal favorite is Jax) and the food is consistently good. I love the cod sandwich (though I ask for it to be extra crispy) and the Gorgonzola fries (pro tip - the the sweet potato fries with the Gorgonzola on the side). Their salads are yummy as well as the salmon sandwich. My husband is a big fan of their burgers and the Italian sandwich. For breakfast my go to is the veggie scramble or eggs Benedict but you cannot go wrong with their biscuits and gravy. And of course, a solid Bloody Mary. The pours are solid, staff amazing, food's delicious (and fresh, with lots of local ingredients). What more could you ask for?? read more

I didn't have the best experience at this popular spot. Parking was an issue which to me is a good thing when tying out a new places. We found parking across the street so that was OK. But, after the beer arrived we waited for our food a long time as everyone around us that came in later was served first I realized there was a problem. Our food was given to the wrong table by the guy that came out of the kitchen since they ordered the other table ordered the exact same thing. I figured our order would be out soon after that but it wasn't. When I asked our waitress about it, she just shrugged her shoulders. I enjoyed the food when we finally got it but was very disappointed by the overall experiance. They were busy so I will give them a break but didn't appreciate our waitresses response to my inquiry about our order when it didn't arrive. I did enjoy the Rueben sliders and the Mac & Jack on tap when finally served but that was about it. I wasn't dissapointed with the food just the service. I may try it again but the whole experience kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. If I'm in Gig Harbor one of these days around Happy Hour, I may just stop in for a better experience. read more

However, after we received our orders, the waitress never checked on us. This is a great spot to watch Hawks games. The place was packed when we arrived, but the servers were able to find a spot for us with a great view of the tv. They also were accommodating in turning up the sound so we could hear the game. We ordered the bacon wrapped prawns, which were phenomenal with the chipotle aioli, along with some delicious chicken nachos. The service was great, and we will definitely be back. read more

I have been here a few times, and though the service is always slow - today was exceptional. If it wasn't for the awful service from rude staff today, this would have received three stars. Ordered breakfast and waited nearly 40 minutes! Asked my waitress to check on it and she got upset with me. People walked in, ordered, ate and paid their bill after I ordered and before my food arrived. Chicken fried steak was over an inch thick - there's a reason it's normally pounded and thinner.... the least they could do is trim the gristle ribbon. Worst I've ever had. I've been here a few times and the food is usually pretty good, but the testy staff ruined todays visit. If you just want a cold drink and sports on TV it okay. This was our first time in my sister invited us and said she liked the place so we stopped to get a bite she recommended the Burgers which were amazing, but when she realized who was waiting on us she said she don't write anything down and our order will come out messed up that's exactly what happened. Another staple of the Gig Harbor area, but a bit lesser known. Since I have been going here they have had a few owners, but one thing that does not disappoint is their food. While it is mainly bar food, the pizza and hot wings are darn good. The hot wings are probably the hottest wings I have had in Washington. Buffalo Wild Wings you don't hold a flame to these guys. Great flavor, but you will definitely feel them the next day. :) Not the fanciest place, but they offer a decent selection of craft beer and wine. A few pool tables and always a mix crowd except late at night, when it is mainly young folks. Worth checking out if you find yourself in the area and you cannot find a table at Tides.
