The Perfect Egg Salad Sandwich with Fries!
    Jim H.

I wasn't planning to be in Flemington, but be that as it may, I found myself there precisely at the time I began feeling very hungry. So, my choices are fast corporate food along Rt. 202, or dive onto Mainstreet and what's cooking . I drove down 94 degrees Main Street, past the RR tracks, past the Hotel construction (looks impressive) to find JS Shaker Cafe. I call it Shaker. The dining area is large and filled with tables & chairs. I like sitting at the counter. So I did. The person that approach seemed like the owner. She was very nice and friendly. I like the layout as a real Americana cafe. I saw egg salad sandwich platter and couldn't keep reading. Diet Coke with ice and a lemon twist. Nice touch. The egg salad sandwich with bacon was amazing. Perfect. I snapped a picture. The bread balanced a healthy serving of the salad, topped with lettuce & tomato. I'm planning on returning and, creature of habit that I am, will be repeating that sandwich. The fries (which I'm not supposed to have) were hot and crisp. Splash some hunts catsup on those bad boys and you're ready to have a summer egg salad romantic encounter.

    Sunshine wrap

A charming, diner style restaurant on an adorable Main Street! I stopped by for a quick lunch, and let the server know I only had thirty minutes. She was very accommodating. I got the Sunshine wrap (apparently a favorite,) and it was tasty and well-priced. The parking lot behind the restaurant is an added bonus. A cute, friendly and nostalgic spot worth visiting for your next casual meal.

Stuffed French toast is I recall.

I like this place. I don't hit it up that often, but when I do it's always good. Just their basic menu is creative without needing to worry the specials (do they even have them, they must...).

For a place with "artisan" in the name, the coffee simply didn't deliver. We paid about $12.50 for two 12 oz. drinks, which is definitely on the pricier side. My malted salted latte tasted pretty bland, lacking the distinct flavor punch I expected. My wife ordered an iced Americano, and she found it wasn't nearly strong enough for her liking. Given the branding and the premium cost, we were expecting a much bolder, higher-quality flavor. The issue likely stems from the service. There was a bit of chaos behind the counter while we waited. Two different employees handled our order and seemed to be actively trying to figure out how to make the drinks. It was pretty clear there was some confusion back there, and something must have been missed in the process. The bakery items and sandwiches looked good, but the drink execution and value just weren't there on this visit. Three stars for now.

Or a buffet that no longer buffets. But pizza is a big part of their menu and a lot of people order it. I can tell you, from sight alone... I wouldn't call it pizza. It's cheese, toppings, and an extremely flat crust that I can only imagine crunches to smithereens. So I went very much with not pizza. Fortunately, the menu goes many other directions. I got a hot chicken sandwich with Cajun fries, basically regular fries with a little seasoning sprinkled on (not baked in). Took a little while to get to us, but once it did, I was impressed with the spice level. This is not for the faint of tongue. The fries were perfectly cooked, but I would say just get plain fries if that's your vibe. I could have upgraded to onion rings or similar, wasn't feeling quite hungry enough for that venture. Verdict: I don't know. It's not a diner. It's not a pizzeria. Definitely seemed kid-friendly. I think my date liked this place more than I did. So again, I'll go with the balance and stick 4 stars on the wall. Could return, not sure what else in Flemington might attract (seems fairly restaurant-barren).

The food here is to-die for, and is certainly one of the best restaurants in the area. I have friends who visit from out of town who specifically request to go to Blue Fish during their stay! The prices are great for the quality of the food. I always opt for the build-your-own entree. This time, I chose the brisket with a side of the caramelized plantains, but I also often go with the chicken, steak, or salmon with the pesto butter. No matter what you order, you can't go wrong. The staff are very kind and the service is quick. The interior is modern and up-to-date, paralleled by its brick historic vibe exterior, as the Stangl Factory building was once a pottery/ceramic factory. Now, the building is home to Blue Fish Grill, as well as a number of other businesses including an artist-owned gallery, a large pottery studio, a medium, and a yoga and physical therapy studio. Stangl also hosts a weekly artisan farmers' market and bi-monthly live music and art events. It really is a growing creative community. Blue Fish Grill doesn't have a bar, but they do allow BYOB. If you find yourself in the Flemington area, be sure to grab a bite at Blue Fish! It will surely be a meal to remember.

I chose the Vanilla Cookie tea which was lovely and would be a redo for me. I wasn't wild about the selection of scones for the day but I enjoyed my peanut butter candied almond scone. The scones come with sides of lemon curd, preserves, and clotted cream. Even sandwiches that I was a little leery of were delicious! The "Tea Sweets" were also yummy but I was so full I ended up taking most of them home and my husband ate them on me.
