Ugh, terrible experience. 11:00am on a Sunday and we waited an hour for eggs. The place had three tables and a few people at the bar. After the server telling us our food would be right out, it still took 20 minutes. Food was OK, not worth the hour wait-and expensive. What really ruined the experience was the local at the bar went out front, right out front, to smoke while all of the windows are open. The restaurant filled with the smell of cigarette smoke. Atmosphere is awesome. On a nice day they open the whole window that is ceiling to floor and you can feel the breeze and get a glimpse of the harbor. The food is great and drinks are great. The wooden bar that spans the whole wall is such a great piece of art to look at. read more

Burgers salads and hangings The real Judge Roy Bean was definitely an interesting character. The type of historical figure that is so distorted and embellished by popular books, movies and folklore that it's difficult to separate fact from fiction. Even though Bean was commonly known as a hanging judge, it's unlikely he actually even hung anyone and was probably confused with a very real hanging judge, Isaac parker. Judge Bean seemed like a pretty nice if rough sort of a fellow that seemed to be a lot of different places all at once. This restaurant actually has very little to do with Roy Bean. A few movie posters and some vaguely western themes, the great old building doesn't need the judge to be impressive. The wonderful and historic building was constructed around 1884 and is pristine condition. Nice views of the bay across the street and they keep the windows wide open in the warm weather so you can feel and smell the sea breezes. Hard to find a more pleasant place to eat and drink on a lazy summer's day. Fortunately the food here just happens to be excellent. The burger are huge and properly cooked and shows the difference between a average burger and one that is special. Plenty of other interesting things on the menu besides burgers including some very creative salads. Not a gourmet restaurant but one that has some exceptional food and drinks that don't require names in other languages. I'm not sure how or why they came up with the Judge Roy Bean name. It seems out of place in this nautical location. But it doesn't really matter. This restaurant is a unique and cool no matter what you call it. Recently, I came into the Bean and a wedding party showed up. Needless to say the the bartender, Barry, was very far behind. The wait for drinks was long. That being said I have never seen so many drinks made in so little time. This place has a very hard working staff and I hope the business owners know what great people they have working for them. Yikes. I haven't been here in years since this place was a dive when I was younger.. I noticed the good reviews recently so I figured I'd give it a try... First off, it was a normal Saturday night. Yes, it was busy, but it wasn't the Fourth of July. We were seated quickly on the first floor and greeted by our waitress. It all started when we ordered our food and were told "it's going to be awhile, they are backed up down there" ; but hey, things happen, it's busy, don't worry about it. A little under an hour later, out came our food (or half of it I should say) before we even received silverware. I waved down the waitress as we would obviously need silverware to eat and was told that there wasn't any clean silverware and that she would bring some over as soon as it came out of the dishwasher...... Ok.... 5 minutes go by, no silverware. 10 minutes, no silverware. I ask if they could take our food back to at least keep it warm in the kitchen - "it's coming out of the dishwasher now" 15 minutes later, still no silverware. Somewhere between the 15-20 mark, out came the silverware for our cold meals. And oh! I forgot to mention. You know how I said "half of our food" earlier? Ya, I was still missing my meal. The silverware comes out with 2 side orders of French fries and I hear "Alright! That's it for food!"..... ugh, nope. I still don't have a plate in front of me. Luckily that only took another 5 minutes. All in all, the food was normal pub grade. Nothing to write home about. The wings were probably the best part. That's the only reason I gave 2 stars as opposed to 1. The waitress was honest about everything. And we understood that it wasn't her fault. But come on! Maybe toss us a free round of drinks, offer SOMETHING to counter this horrendous experience. This place has dropped back down to my "avoid" list. This is our walk to "local". We love it year round. The hostess is so welcoming and the wait staff go out of their way to make sure you are all set. I have seen the reviews from some Saturday night two months ago that folks weren't getting silverware - I have no idea what that is about and IT IS NOT the way this place rolls. So they had one night that they must have gotten slammed with seating earlier and dishwashing couldn't keep up. I am sorry that those folks had that experience, but believe me that is a strange fluke - never before and I am sure never again has that happened. This is a solid pub. Friendly staff. Trifecta of food, ambiance and service at this cozy "saloon" in terrific historic building in the equally quaint town of Bristol. Creative menu featured a New England sampler with local flavors, such as the Little Neck and Chorizo Corn Chowder. A creamy, kicky flavor with clams-on-the-shell. Neat to eat and perfectly sweet. Both the spinach/cranberry and the grilled romaine salads were generous and tasty. So filling, we thought there was no way we would stuff down the triple Short Rib Sliders W/Boursin Cheese, Pickled Onions & *Fabulous* Hand Cut Fries. Managed to do so, though the sliders were adequate but not outrageous. Kudos for a creative menu and friendly, accommodating service in this fantastic old building across from the harbor. A solid choice for casual ambiance and a decent meal. Judge Roy would approve. read more

We recently visited again and it is time to add another star. Our waitress seemed to be very new and unsure of herself. She didn't know the answer to some of our questions, but she went to find them out. She was really friendly and once she gets more comfortable there she is going to be great. I once again had the Red Neck sangria and enjoyed it. My husband had Yuengling on draft. We were there early during the week, so were able to take advantage of the $4 appetizer menu. They Mozambique clams were great. I could have had a larger plate for a meal with some bread to soak up the delicious broth. We also had the papas bravas, which were cheese fries with a sauce. This was only OK. We both had burgers and enjoyed them, the Wellington with no egg for me and the JRB burger for him. We'll definitely be back. read more

A real low key, chill, casual atmosphere. I ordered the guacamole which was really good but the Grilled Ahi Tuna Tacos left something to be desired. I'm a huge fan of fish tacos but I was dismayed to see that the grilled tuna was barely grilled at all. It was pretty much bright red raw tuna in a tortilla. If you like a sticky bar top and cheap eats this is the place for you. read more

The food was decent but it took over a half hour to get two salads and an order of wings. Ordered a side of tots too which were $6 and came out over cooked all you could taste was batter and no potato in a small portion. Place didn't seem that busy at the time either 3pm on a Sunday. Our waiter was awful at this restaurant, but frankly that was the least of our problems. I ordered the short rib tacos, and something crunched between my molars. I thought, what is supposed to be crunchy in this taco? Then I looked down and saw a 2-3 inch long cockroach- probably the biggest one I've ever seen. It spanned more than half the length of the taco, (which, I shit you not, cost 18 dollars.) From what I could tell, this fellow was the flying kind of roach. On this second occasion I ordered the JR Bean Burger which was pretty good. Tasted as though it had honey or something to that effect in it. The egg was perfectly cooked, as was my medium rare beef. Fries were great too. Overall, a good quality and tasting meal. Beer: Pineapple Sculpin was good, while the Newport Storm Rhode Trip was just OK. Honestly, the bar atmosphere here is hard to beat. The mahogany bar immediately catches your eyes, all while those huge open windows pour light in to really brighten everything up. Makes it feel super summery, even though you're sitting inside. It's always a solid choice for dinner and drinks. The braised short rib tots are an absolute must try and the beer battered cheese curds are still a favorite. When you're in Bristol after 2pm, past the lunch hour and before cocktail time, it can be tough to find a good place to sit down for good eats. Luckily, we pulled up Judge Roy Bean, and after seeing the lovely open-air pub with live music coming from it, decided this was the place to chill for a bit. It's a lovely space -- wood panelling and high ceilings. The menu reads a little heavy for my taste, but the burgers, wings and seafood offerings are all beautifully crafted and far from run-of-the-mill pub fare. I decided to go with the lobster sliders, which were pretty tasty and satisfying. My problem really has to do with the service. After being seated, it tok our server a good ten minutes to greet us, and the place only had three other tables to service. Once she brough us our waters, it was another ten minutes before she was back to take our orders, and then the food took a good 30 minutes to come out. She only refilled our water glasses once (which wasn't cool because all I was drinking was water), and even then I had to ask for it. We were barely done with our food when she asked, "You ready for the check yet?" -- I was literally mid-bite when she asked. It was a total turn-off, and something I'd chalk up to lack of experience if it wasn't the end of the summer. However, the food is delicious and of good quality, the location is fantastic and the atmosphere lovely. Perhaps there are better servers, so you may have a better experience than I had! read more

Comfortable and cheery was our first impression. What image do you get in your head when you think saloon? Dark and grungy? Put that thought out of your mind. This is not your typical saloon! My husband and I recently enjoyed dinner here on a warm summer evening. The large windows were open and an enjoyable sea breeze kept us cool and comfortable. We were greeted immediately by our friendly server. I've set the stage about the atmosphere. Now for the food. The menu was concise, but each dish sounded so delicious I had a difficult time deciding what to get. But then my gaze fell on the Roasted Eggplant Meatballs and I was sold! Ever have one of those meals that you know you will never forget? This was one of those for me. We started with the roasted Beet salad and then I had the Eggplant Meatballs. They were light and juicy, on top of a crispy polenta. I was in heaven after the first bite! read more

That was until, they brought me my entree and proceeded to tell me they RAN OUT OF SILVERWARE and they didn't know when I'd get any. "Hi ma'm, here's your food, but we don't have any utensils for you to eat it with.Dig in!" I'm not trying to be rude, but what would they like me to do with my Mac & cheese entree with not a piece of silverware on the table? I understand things happen, but on a Saturday night this is completely unacceptable. If you ran out of silverware, keep that to yourself and hold my food until I can get something to actually eat it with. That totally ruined my whole experience and truly shot down the quality and customer service level of this place. If I come back it will be for the bar only. read more

Wow. Are we in Bristol? This place is amazing. It's decorated like an old Texas saloon with a modern twist. When the Bean was owned previously, it was known as a bar, not really a dining experience. Well, that has changed and don't miss out! The food is awesome! We got the Pork Tostada and the Eggplant "meatballs." Both delicious! Full liquor bar and a dozen draft beers. This place is a COVID-19 breading ground. I was not going to post this review. But I don't think it is fair to other restaurant owners who are trying to follow the rules. We were here last Friday night and this is what we observed over an hour. The bartender did not wear a mask the entire time we were there. Waitstaff with masks below their nose. Customers walking in and out and back and forth to the bathroom with no mask. No employees stopping customers from walking around with no mask. If you are a walk in they do not ask for any contact information. No surface cleaning when patrons leave the bar. Unfortunately there is no management late night here to make sure anything is enforced. They meet the physical criteria of outside dining and bar barriers but beyond that there is zero adherence. read more

In all my years of dining out, I have never had such bad service in an establishment. We were seated quickly, which should have been a clue, because everywhere else there was a 30 minute minimum wait. So we sat for a good 15 minutes, I was wondering where is the waitress, so I went off and found her chatting away to a bunch of teenagers on another table. She apologized, and took our order. About an hour later we had still not got our food. The waitress went off and came back and said it will be at least 15 minutes more because the kitchen was backed up. I said this is terrible, the place is pretty empty? She said we only have one person in the kitchen. I asked for the manager, she said we do not have one here today, she said that she would get the bartender. Bartender said she was in charge, she was older than the other waitresses. I explained that this is terrible service, she said, said we have one person in the Kitchen, I said as much as I feel bad, for him or her, a burger costs $16 and we have now been here an hour and a half. She said she would make sure our food was out next. The food came out in about 10 minutes, but at best it was about as tasty as TGI Fridays on a very bad day. Just want to say, if I owned this establishment I would be embarrassed. read more

This is one of my favorite spots in Bristol! The food is so delicious and cooked to perfection. The wings are outstanding and the burgers are perfect! Also, the sweet potato fries are one of my favorite items to eat. They are so crisp and tasty every time! The service is awesome too! Lauren is one of my favorites there, shes a doll. And a new girl named Grace waited on us recently and she was a sweetheart too! Great food with great service...cannot beat that!!! read more

Thanks Judge Roy Bean for a tasty late Friday night dinner. We were a table of 7 and a kind patron moved tables, so that we could all sit together. (Naturally, he was treated to a beer.) A variety of beers, both on tap and in bottles and a signature cocktail list of 7 or so options. The candied bacon on the margarita was a nice touch. I've been wanting to try the Dogfish Namaste -- and it did not disappoint. The cheese curd app -- mozzarella sticks taken up a serious notch. Get them. They are worth the calories -- for a group of 7, we got 2 orders. This was enough for a taste for each of us. Dinner, for me, was the beet sliders (with goat cheese, tomato and mixed greens) and fries. A really great option for someone that didn't want the heaviness of a beef burger for a 9pm dinner. However, the burger selections were NO JOKE and not for the faint of heart. (Think sweet potato waffle as a the bun with fried chicken....) There are 4 or 5 other entree options outside sandwiches, which all sounded quite tasty. Started to get busy about 10pm for the Friday night pub crowd. Upstairs had a private party, so we were all on the main level. A really solid spot -- I can definitely see myself there again in the future. read more

We came to JR Beans for a late dinner with 7 people after a holiday event across the street. It certainly turns into more of a college/20's hangout after 9/10pm. I was super weary about the beet sliders since I'm new to beets...but let me tell you, they were awesome! I also had their signature burger which I would highly recommend. Parking can be a pain in the butt, but once you get there, you're in a place with traditional tavern/pub fare and seems like an ideal place for a cool autum or winter evening. I have no qualms and will certainly come back for a bite if I'm in Bristol! read more

You won't find anyone at Jude Roy Bean complaining about being there. Mostly because they've got a good buzz. And rightly so. It's a good spot to get a reasonably priced beer. There's always some regulars in there. Pretty good spot to watch a game. I've been told there is or was pool upstairs but it's never open while I'm there. Haven't had the food other than the wings on Wednesdays and those are pretty good. And they've had good live music on several occasions which I've enjoyed. I like this spot for what it is. No frills. Just a nice bar and good service. read more
