Ive been here more than 3 times and every time it has been bad. The waitress like everyone has stated is not friendly and really tries to avoid the customer after serving them, whether it be not making eye contact or simply pretending to act busy instead of catering to the customer. I don't know if it was stereotyping or what but it definitely seemed like they had favoritism to the "kind" of customers they wanted to serve. If only every restaurant plopped down freshly made little donuts instead of passe bread, the world would certainly be a better place. My husband saw the blinking donut light from blocks away, and it lured him into this nondescript strip mall like a siren song. I was skeptical, and almost made him leave, but then I said to myself, 'Vanessa, have you learned nothing from Yelping? Don't judge a restaurant by its cover''. So we went on in. It had a east coast diner feel, pictures and witty sayings cluttered the walls. We sat down and started to study this enormous menu, there was every breakfast combo you could imagine, and the freshly squeezed juice selections delighted me. Let me start with the bad: Service. Awful. I mean the first couple minutes, you feel like they want you there, you get your "shut up" donuts, and your water. And then they come to take your order, and ... nothing. I finished my water almost before the food got there, and I never saw a second glass. We were there 45 minutes. I had to basically stare down the waitress to get a box for what we wanted to take with us. Definitely don't go there if you're on a schedule, or heaven forbid a half hour lunch. I have been here at least 5 times and I feel like the place is getting slightly worse each time. I would have given it a borderline 5 the first time, then eventually a 4, but now it's definitely a 3 at best. I don't mind the slight wait and parking is pretty convenient in this strip mall near Kohl's. The environment has a bunch of framed kitschy sayings and quotes along with the open juice bar and doughnut making area in the back. There are some different seating levels so make sure to watch your step. The bathroom had no paper towels or toilet paper last time. When it got "refilled", it was just stacked in the bathroom rather than installed. Previously, service was pretty quick and organized. They would come and ask what you wanted to drink, then take your order when they brought the drinks around. Doughnuts would come later. Now, we just wait with no wait staff, then the server comes around with doughnuts and followed by asking for the drink order. Because we had waited so long, we just wanted to order, but the server told us to wait since she had to drop off all the doughnuts she was holding to the other tables. She took their drink orders and got them their drinks before coming back to all of the tables in her area for their orders. That's a pretty systematic way of doing things, but it's to her convenience rather than to the customer's. Water wasn't filled regularly and I could see other tables around us waiting for their coffee. People were waiting around or looking for our server to get their checks and pay. That being said, the food quality is still pretty good. Eggs were done right with a large and filling portion for the meal. Despite being busy, the quality of cooked bacon in the omelette was still crisp, the potatoes not underdone or overly done, and a high number of options. My wife found a cockroach in her omelette -- at least it was cooked. Not the kind of protein she was looking for. The server removed the plate, apologized and did not charge for her dish and offered her something else from the menu. Ummm.. no thanks..lost appetite Told us "it must have come off some vegetables." The manager obviously did not think this was a priority enough to come out herself. Getting up from the table to leave, all the servers at the front bolted as if we belonged to a leper colony. Guess word got out. When we first arrived, we were no so much greeted at the door as stared at; and no, we don't look funny. No one asked us how many people, just asked if we prefer a booth or table. From the outside, this place looks a bit bleak. However, once you are inside, the decor is warm and inviting. Instead of having the entire restaurant be a clutter of tables and a front register, they carved out a few areas with architecture. They must have a thousand picture frames with little sayings in them. For example, the one next to my seat said "I love Florida. Everything is in the 80s. The weather, the ages and the IQs!" Our breakfast was delicious. I ordered biscuits and gravy which came with delicious "jimmy" potatoes and 2 eggs. My breakfast companion ordered a skillet that also included the same style potatoes and a side of pancakes. Plus there was cold outside air pouring in through some small cracks in the wall. Did my best to cover with my gloves, but alas my feet still froze. Service: We immediately received some of their homemade donuts. Little bowls of happiness in a warm, sweet doughball! Our server was friendly and efficient. She told us she had been seated thrice all at the same time, and would go in order. No worries. I ordered a triple berry bubble tea to drink, and they had to make fresh tapioca. She said it'd take about 8 minutes, and I got it just in time for my meal about 15 minutes later. Not like the burgers were a little greasy, but someone had grease all over their hands and touched the plate and all four of the mini-buns. It was just a turnoff. The burgers were overdone with burnt onions and no seasoning. The fries did nothing for me. My sister's turkey had something (gristle?) running right through the center of every piece of turkey. When she pointed this out to the waitress, she took care of it right away, but it wasn't a great way to keep our table happy. The turkey should have never made the plate. The first panini was cooked perfectly with gross turkey, but the second one was rushed, so although the turkey was edible, the cheese wasn't melted and the bread was barely warm. I decided to just pay the bill and leave because I realized you can't fix stupid. I stopped here after church today expecting it to be like a juice bar. Nope! This is a full-blown pancake-house type restaurant; don't be fooled by the simple store front in the strip mall. I give them four stars because the food is pretty good, they have excellent service, and the menu prices are a great value. This place seems like a competitor to Omega down the street. They do have some unique touches though. I love the coffee served on the white doily, and the donuts served as a free appetizer are amazing! I got the Southern Comfort plate which was absolutely huge. It had four biscuits smothered with gravy, two large sausage patties, two eggs, and a generous serving of potatoes. I took what I couldn't eat at breakfast home, and I was eating the rest for the remainder of the day! Other servings seemed just as large, judging by looking at the tables around me. One last thing I want to note about Juicy-O is that they did a good job of seating me right away. Also, my plate literally came about five minutes after ordering- I was still working on the mini donuts! I've loved everything I've ever eaten here, which includes every type of egg-based dish they offer, fruit, oatmeal, & yogurt. I usually order off the daily special menu - some of my favorites are the quiche & fruit combo and the green eggs & ham special. They only bummer is that they use a malt batter for the pancakes, and I can't stand malt. But they more than make up for that with the delicious free doughnuts. (If the doughnuts don't arrive right away, just ask your waitress.) Service can be slow at times regardless of how busy they are, but it's a pleasant place to wait with all the goofy stuff to read on the walls. What a wonderful little surprise! Tucked away in the little Kohl's strip mall there's a darn good breakfast place. And if it weren't for Yelp, we never would have known about it. It was the fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, the ham-and-tomato scramble, and the side of whole wheat pancakes that really hit the spot. (Picky little sidenote: When ham makes an appearance in an omelette or scramble, it's usually diced. At Juicy-O, it almost seems like it was shaved, so the hammy ham goodness flavored the whole thing. Nice touch!) Two people can eat there for less than $20 (circa 2006). We ended up at Juicy-O for a *very* late breakfast on Sunday, after unsuccessfully attempting to introduce my BF to my newest favorite breakfast place, Honey Jam Cafe. (we arrived 4 minutes after closing, damn you daylight savings time!) We live somewhat nearby, but with all the horrid construction on 22nd st/Butterfield Rd, it took us twice as long to get to the area - so we were starving, hungover, and in need of food ASAP. I remembered that Juicy-O was across the street, so we headed over. We arrived about 20 minutes before closing, and were treated very graciously. Since it was pretty empty (probably only 6 tables taken) it was eerily quiet in there. The service was quick and friendly, and we received our food pretty quickly. I was disappointed that we didn't get to try the donuts that everyone talks about, but I guess that's the punishment for arriving so close to closing! I ordered the breakfast quesadilla, which was HUGE! I ate two pieces of it and I was full. I really liked it though - jack cheese, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, onions, and served with avocado on top and sides of sour cream and salsa. Everything was cooked perfectly, flavors blended nicely, I really enjoyed it. It was a little messy to eat, but I ate it with a knife and fork so it wasn't that bad. The BF ordered biscuits and gravy, and a short stack. The biscuits and gravy came with eggs - he ordered them over easy, but the final product was way too runny. The biscuits and gravy had good flavor, but both the biscuits and the gravy were cold - like they didn't even attempt to heat either of them up at all. Kinda icky. Bring your appetite. Looking for a breakfast place this morning, we decided on Juicy-O. We were seated promptly (we came in at 10am, by 11, there were folks waiting). The waitress brought a bowl of warm small donuts... mmmm. They were heavily / heavenly sugared. The menu is mostly breakfast and we opted for omelets. These are huge! The omelets come with toast and potatoes, although I think you can substitute for the potatoes. I would estimate the omelet to be around 6 eggs. It was more than I wanted to eat this morning. We quickly found out why people were leaving the place with doggie bags. I suspect that they will split an order if you want. The place is much bigger than you would think for a strip mall restaurant. That said, it is busy and the service was a bit leisurely. The breakfast potatoes are very nicely done, if in a massive portion. Seems like chunky potatoes in most places are under done and way to blah, but these were cooked perfectly and had a nice mix of seasonings. When I walked in it sort of reminded me if a little mom n pop place and they treated me and my colleague just like you would expect at a family owned place. Went here on Christmas eve with a groupon. There were very few people here, but our service still wasn't stellar. The endless coffee wasn't so endless when I was waiting for a refill for a stretch. My husband and I came to breakfast this morning. I thought I'd order a skillet coz it sounded so yummy as described in the menu. When my order came, I could only look at it in disbelief! Such an overwhelming portion that it looked like it was just slammed in there that the chef didn't care much for presentation. It tastes good don't get me wrong but it didn't look so appetizing. I only ate a few teaspoons of the egg, the chicken and the kale. America should downsize the portions of the food served in diners as the country battles weight issues. Good location with ample parking. As you enter you receive a warm welcome normally from all the employees around the front door. The restaurant is well furbished and painted with bright colors that really set a good mood for a early brunch. I suggest taking a seat near the back wall to look into the viewing window to watch the employees make your complimentary donuts. It's free entertainment like watching through the window of a old town taffy shop. The restaurant has a very home like feel to it. Their wide array of crêpes and other perfectly matches salty and sweat cuisine. Rounded together with in house freshly squeezed orange juice. My wife and I enjoyed the meal and the warm atmosphere. Her yogurt and fruit was large and very tasty, the only thing of note was the watermelon was a bit dull in taste. I chalk that up to it being November. My Southern style combo was nice, I wasn't expecting the gravy to be on the pancakes, either by accident or design, and the over easy eggs were just a bit too easy, but nothing I was bothered by enough to have them change. the free taste of homemade donuts was heavenly and the coffee flowed freely. I LOVE JUICY-O! My parents brought me here one morning to join them for breakfast. They are regulars here, even have a picture on the wall! I'm not a 'breakfast person' but I always find something to eat here. The little donuts they start you off with are yum! Also for those of you trying to watch your figure, as I ALWAYS am, they offer egg whites or beaters and have tons of dishes that are low cal. I also highly suggest you try the bubble teas and smoothies. The waitstaff is sweet and friendly and the place is cute and comfy. OK, I'm going to use a word I normally avoid since I think this word is so massively over-used that in most contexts it is worthless. But Juicy-O, despite its goofy name (She had a juicy O... what, breakfast?), blew me away so much by the quality of the food and creativity in making a really awesome sweet breakfast that I have to say it: Juicy-O is AMAZING! At first I couldn't figure out why Chef Bannos would stick his breakfast place in a strip mall way out in the suburbs. After eating here without much of a wait or line it's obvious- this place would be mobbed to the point of sucking on weekends in Chicago. Downers Grove is lucky for it! read more
