I live right next door to Junior's, so I know it's a popular place by virtue of the fact that the sidewalk in front of my house becomes a waiting room for hungry patrons on busy weekend mornings. I've considered setting up a lemonade stand out there... probably could make a killing. Despite my close proximity, I've only been in to eat a handful of times. Everything I've had there, though, has been delicious. The Pans 3-egg scramble is delightful and the strawberry jam delivered to the table with the toast was some of the best I've ever had. The portions are generous and more than enough to fill you up. I also noticed when I stopped in today that the menu had more than doubled in size since the last time I was there. There's really something for everyone. I definitely recommend it. And if you see me out there with my lemonade stand, be sure to say hello. read more

I will never go back to Juniors because It took forever to be seated, there was nowhere to wait except outside in the rain, and it took a long long time to get my food. My biggest complaint? Well to top it off, Some poor couple who had their own reasons (I'm sure) was chased out (I kid you not) on to the front sidewalk and yelled at by the owner of the restaurant for failing to tip. She did this in front of several customers who were also waiting to be seated. Appalling! I shall not be back. The moral to my story? So most of the hipsters that eat and serve here, are covered with tats so they can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery ; ) . Even the two hipster baby momma's next to us were laden. I was jealous. I walked in and the retro booths of gold star-dust vinyl, wall-paper and light fixtures as they still garnish my childhood home reminded me of my days of hanging in Silver Lake in LA. Our burgers were delish although asking for them rare or med-rare - not in the cards, but mine was garnished with tons of brie and bacon! The tomatoes were spot on local heirloom for this time of year. And I am always pleased to substitute a salad for chips. The brioche buns are from Grand Central. Two thumbs up on the coffee which was strong, and I was informed was from Heart which I am now going to try. So glad it did-delicious! Substituted the homemade apple sauce for toast-perfect blend of sweet/sour/spices for me. Yum! This is an important place to go at least once for breakfast in Portland. Juniors has a great selection of delicious things to eat. This is my secret place for sitting for a long time with one or two other people in the early morning. One can easily sink into a comfortable booth and talk for hours. I never notice the service, just the conversations that I get to have while sitting in a place with such interesting decorations. If you're vegan, they have vegan French toast. If you're not, they have other wonderful things. I like things with potatoes in them, and they have lots of those. I usually order some big platter of something that makes my mouth water and chomp on it for the next hour or so. It's a good place. Especially in the morning. Try it. Tired of the wait at Bisaw's (don't get me wrong... the food is great there, but we didn't want to wait in the cold soggy weather on Sunday morning), and wanting something we've never tried before, we settled on Junior's Cafe. Our breakfast mates included long-time friend Kevin Kalama and his fiance Julie. It was left up to me to decide our breakfast place, so I spent a lot of time researching reviews (thanks for the help Yelp!) All indicators said the place quickly filled up, and being that it was smack-dab in the middle of a neighborhood, parking would be a challenge. So we agreed on an early meet-up time of 8:30 a.m. Located on the border of SE Portland's Ladd's Addition, and the SE industrial area on 12th Ave., creates for a really cool, hip, neighborhood-y vibe. Even more appropriate are the wait staff and cooks, all dressed down in their SE Portland-I-don't-give-a-crap-what-you-think-of-me uniforms consisting of worn out t-shirts sporting racy graphics, over long sleeve/skateboarder t-shirts or leave me alone punk/grunge plaid shirts and jeans, all helping complete the atmosphere. I considered our goth-inspired waitress, and even found myself thinking that she didn't really have to do much more for her Halloween costume. I love it when you go to a place where you really can't tell the wait-staff from the patrons. All kidding aside, if you want "real", then this is about as much as it gets. Also, I'm not entirely sure what kind of coffee they serve at Junior's, but it simply rocked... and our waitress made sure to keep our mugs fresh... anything less in Portland would be a travesty, IMHO. Keep in mind we haven't even started talking about the food yet! And oh, the food... Many different genre are offered, but not too many things in each category. But that's fine... Junior's makes up for that in spades with flavor, textures, and out-and-out culinary creativity. While some joints push quantity over quality; consider the 8-to-10-page, full-color photo-filled novel the waitress hands you at any Elmer's or Denny's (ugh! on both); Junior's is a simple black and white, 4-page spread in simple 12-point type, with basic descriptions, reflecting their a simple mantra... less emphasis on the marketing and more on the product. I opted for the herb omelette--which I had to ask our waitress to identify the herbs... to which she replied, "Thyme, rosemary, sage". I added a side of apple-wood chicken sausage, and the gluten-free toast. My wife went for the gluten-free French toast, the apple-wood chicken sausage, and country potatoes. We both figured that would work out well, since I rarely enjoy French toast anymore due to my gluten allergy, and overhearing this, our waitress suggested we opt for an extra slice of French toast because the slices were so small. Excellent up-sell, but even more than that, incredible customer awareness on her part! The chicken sausage was cooked just right, with the perfect amount of "brown crispy edges" I so love. Same for the potatoes. You can't really mess up French toast, but Junior's has taken the dish back to that "comfort zone" we all so miss, and strive to achieve. Theirs has just a bit "extra", with the use of cinnamon, and REAL butter (the way grandma used to do). Soooo good! The star of our breakfast show as my herb omelette... in a word, "incredible". I have a reputation of using rosemary in pretty much everything I prepare at home... from baked chicken, steaks and pork on the grill, even to scrambled eggs, but I've never done that in an omelette, nor even considered invoking the classic trifecta by adding thyme and sage to the party. Neither bland, nor overpowering... this new take on the rudimentary breakfast staple is purely genius! With no pressure to leave immediately after our meals, we sat and talked with our friends for a bit, feeling satiated in our newly-found breakfast nirvana. Just the way I like to spend a lazy, hazy, chilly Sunday Portland morning... great food, good company, in a down-to-earth place run by real people in a relaxing, laid-back joint. I got a pretty standard breakfast: french toast, fried egg, vege sausage but it was just right! Adorable ambiance and the waitress called us all "hun" and "my friends" teehee. She also went out of her way to serve my chai without any milk or soy milk which I guess they don't do there (I think it's concentrated or something?) but I was very happy about because I was congested with a sore thought and just wanted it straight. The have a whole section of the menu devoted to french toast (including vegan french toast!). And they have nutella and toast as a side option! The outdoor seating is out front and since the cafe is on 12th it's not the quietest spot for that. Great breakfast/brunch joint for both vegans and non-vegans alike! Almost all of their scrambles can be made vegan. I had the 'wranglin roy' scramble which was delicious and came with bacon and house made chipotle sour cream on top. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful. Try the house made jam! People have been telling me to eat breakfast here since I moved to Portland. I was dubious, but I finally took the plunge. Well, shit. Everything I had was tasty (and served in huge portions!) and hot. I had the vegan potatoes with spicy tofu sauce and I wanted to drown in the deliciousness. Wow. I was really impressed with Juniors. I had high expectations for my only brunch stop in Portland, and kind of didn't think this cute little spot was up to the job. Shame on me for not believing. First of all, it's important to note that while veg friendly, the menu also contains meat. I ordered a 3 egg scramble with feta, chorizo, home made salsa and cilantro, and it was delicious. I kept eating even when I was full because it tasted so good. Homemade bread and breakfast potatoes came on the side. The juice is unbelievably good too. "it comes and goes, luvva luvva luvva like my dream, red gold and green red gold and greee eee een" All was well with my discover of the red gold and green theme it is subtle and waits for you. But wait there is more. Turning around there are 3 large overseeing Gods on the wall all apocalyptic, creepy, amazing and wonderful. An owl, a unicorn and I believe a dragon or bear(it was early in the morning). I imagine they come to life and eat your face off if you don't leave a good tip for the awesome staff or if the awesome staff isn't good maybe they eat one of them who knows what crazy gods protecting restaurants think. I liked them, I feared them. I enjoyed my coffee and sandwich and seeing as my face is still intact I will assume that the tip was a good offering. I used to end up hungover at Junior's at least once a month. If you like eggs, it's the place to go for morning eats. The 12th ave. scramble is great, and it includes zuchini, corn, red peppers, and parmesan. Add a little green tabasco and you're set. All the breakfast platters come with the tiniest cup of cottage cheese sprinkled with cinnamon that you will ever see, but it is exactly the right amount to satiate one's palate. Somehow, through a type of alchemy, Juniors is able to make the perfect scramble plate. The proportion of scramble to potatoes to toast is just right to leave one satisfied, and filled. Don't let me forget the fruit cup! The first time I saw it I thought to myself, a $5 fruit cup! What the heck! But it's amazing, made with seasonal fruit, nancy's organic yogurt, drizzled with honey, and covered with sliced almonds. I don't think I've ever lusted after fruit in the same way. Think small. The cooking and service was good, but the short menu - not including pancakes - bummed me out, ordering a plate of two eggs, potatoes and bacon. I guess $5.50 is a fair cost for that plate, but I think as far as the Portland breakfast scene goes, I'm used to getting a full stack or pancakes at MPF for $3.50ish. We went to Junior's after reading reviews about it not having a long wait...yeah, in this town when you are hungry for breakfast on a Sunday that sometimes takes a priority. We were surprised, after reading the mix of reviews here...from those that seem to hate the place to those that love it. Perhaps those that hate it are offended by the fact that they are so accommodating to vegetarian/vegan diets. I can't say I've been to any breakfast spot that actually offered soy creamer at the table, I'm certain this was the first. They also offer to sub tofu for any egg item, they have veggie meat substitutes as well. We will visit Juniors again, absolutely. The plates we tried were great. Great flavor. Absolutely my new favorite place to get breakfast in the city! The decor is awesome. Straight out of the 70s! Completed with crushed black velvet paintings! The staff is super accommodating and nice. You are always taken care of. The food is super fresh and made to order. I love that you can see the chef and staff moving around in and out of the kitchen. Juniors is like my dream diner come true. It's hard to find a place like this in Minneapolis. The potato and scrambler plates are huge, so if you've a small appetite, it's probably best to split it with someone else. Or you can have them again for lunch or dinner. I had the fennel and leek potatoes. It was delicious, but a lot of potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the french toast, and declared them tasty. I hate french toast, so I will take his word for it. I came here with a large group of six on a Sunday and surprisingly sat at our booth right away. Most of our group was vegan so the menu was perfect for us with lots of options for vegans and omnivores. Our server was so helpful and attentive. We all really liked our food. WOW!!! The menu makes you want to order four dishes!!!! There are just so many wonderful things to choose from on the menu. I wrestled with wanting to order Juniors Potatoes, Scrambles, Omelets and/or French Toast. But then do you just get French Toast or do you get French Toast with the Fruit and Yogurt!? Oh! It was mind wrenching. I finally settled on the Pans Scramble with Juniors French Toast; and yes they were both for me! I don't need you to judge! ...okay, my apologies but I want to make sure my culinary experiences go without the tainted disdain of those who would choose to hold my taste buds against me. The French Toast was made fairly well. They could use a Chantilly cream to offset the dryness but the syrup makes up for it pretty well. Pans Scramble was as expected; the main ingredient is pesto and pesto is what you get! Pesto is pretty strong but coupled with the eggs, spinach and garlic the tastes and textures merge wonderfully with each bite. The Yelp description is a bit disconcerting; it reads "Vegan." Although I am not opposed to eating vegan when I have the taste for protein in the form of chicken I want exactly that. Remembering Jeff G. rave about this place I reached out to him and asked to which he replied, "No, YUMMM!!!" Who could argue with that!? I must concur, YUMMM is exactly right and I look forward to my next visit to try my next two dishes. The decor is nothing to write home about and is totally ignored upon that first bite! I barely even remember waiting outside for a table after I signed the ledger to await the beckon of my name being called by the soft-voiced greeter/server. I'm a big fan of this place, back every month at least. It's part of our regular weekend breakfast rotation, ever since our second date there three years ago. These guys have a fascinating selection of yummy foods on the menu. For me as someone who can't eat dairy, gluten or garlic, I don't have *as* many choices - but i still have a half-dozen items that I can choose from, and a few favourites (cracked pepper and honey omelette, fennel leek hash) that keep me coming back. They'll accommodate: non-dairy oil in cooking the meal, gluten-free toast, skip the garlic, basically all the kinds of accomodations I've come to expect from the most customer-guts-friendly places here in town. Get there early and you won't even have to wait on a Saturday or Sunday. Worst case though, this place doesn't have half the wait of most of the main-corridor breakfasteries where you see dozens of beards and Uggs milling about outside every weekend. read more

No doubt the most perfect breakfast ever. First off the most beautiful down to earth owner, was my server. She brought me a fresh squeezed mimosa. I ordered the vegan potatoes. (zucchini, mushrooms, and corn) i added cheese and sour cream (she suggested the chipotle sour that they make there.) Talk about an orgasm in my mouth, the veggies where fresh and a plenty. and the potatoes where cut in to squares and perfectly crispy on the out side (right on the verge of burnt, perfect) and soft on the inside. I wanted to try out this cafe for a reeaaallly long time before actually getting around to it and my experience didn't disappoint my expectations (for the most part). All in all, the food was really good. The portions were HUGE. So, if you're intimidated by the prices, don't worry too much. The quantity of food you get is definitely worth it. The tofu scrambles here, for example, are tasty and plentiful, and the sides are generous too. There was, however, an issue with our order when we got the check. My friend ordered eggs with a few sides, including sausage. The wording on the menu stated that you can get the eggs with sausage "and" whatever other item was listed. When we got the check with an extra $3.50 charged to us for the sausage, we came to understand that the "and" should have been an "or". It's a simple wording mistake, but it makes a big difference. And that difference resulted in spending more money than we planned. Also, $3.50 for two skinny sausage links is pretty pricey. read more

I've been to Junior's a few times, though my ex was too hipster to use Yelp so I hadn't checked in previously. (Seriously, the shade he threw about yelping... Wtf.) Forgive me Yelpers, for I have sinned and promise not to fail again! So the point here is that I've been been here enough times to know how damn much I LOVE this place and can recommend it without hesitation. Yesterday I went for the Migas scramble. It was, per usual, on point. I went with eggs and chorizo as my protein options, with wheat toast, and smashed potatoes. Freaking love the fresca type salsa and delicious sour cream pile on top. My bestie is vegan and she went for the vegan french toast meal. The waitress actually said "Wow, nice work!" after this petite gal mowed through the entire plate. Ah, it was a proud moment. Full disclosure: I don't love the smashed potatoes. It's like a confused baker trying to find its way back to a dinner plate, but lacking the flavor or toppings to get there. It's literally just a potato or two that has been bludgeoned into submission and cooked until crispy... it's up to you to salt and sauce it up, but because it's a side there's not usually enough of something saucy from your entree to properly drown it in. Every dish I've tried at Junior's has always been more than enough food to comfortably stuff my face with, it's been a nice balance of a main dish and sides, and it's always flavor packed. Yum! So what's with the 4 stars instead of 5? Well, the place is pretty damn tiny, and the waits are long. The wait times for groups can hit 2 hours because they are not equipped for anything larger than 4 tops. They have one spot in the back for groups of about 6. That's it. The rest are booths which comfortably seat 4, except for 2 bar seats at the front window. While the 60s-esque diner feel is darling, they're too damn delicious to accommodate Portland's hungover brunch needs. TL;DR Pros: piles of delicious food, super fun atmosphere, very cool staff, fantastic selection for meat and veggie based friends alike, and everyone cheers when a new bottle of champagne is popped. (Did I mention their glorious boozy breakfast menu?!) Cons: same long waits you'll find at every other awesome brunch place in PDX, not accessible for anyone who's not super able bodied (except for maybe users of canes?) and the Harry Potter-like cupboard of a bathroom in the back.) I have been frequenting Juniors for over a decade, but went there for the last time on Sunday 2/23. Food has gone downhill since last time I was there but I can live with that because you go to Juniors for mediocre food, but lots of it. My friend and I had finished our food but we were both sipping on coffee and she still had half of her Blood Mary to drink, when the owner (?) came over to our table. I figured she was going to thank us for our patronage but nicely ask us to finish up as there were people waiting for tables. No, that's not what she said. We were told "I haven't paid rent for January, let alone February, so I need you to leave". Who treats customers like that? With service like that you're going to lose what customers you do have to PAY YOUR RENT. Poor business decision from extremely unprofessional staff. read more

What can I say? My fiancée and I stopped here for breakfast on our way out of Portland on Monday 4/8/13 at around 9:00 AM, and it was EXACTLY what I wanted: Unpretentious, simple, relaxed, great tasting, hearty vegan food. I had the "Superhero" which was a tofu scramble with veggie sausage, tomato, and spinach. It was served with potatoes, and toast. I've had a lot of tofu in my day, and this tofu was really flavorful. The service was super friendly, and our coffee cups never ran dry. The interior is pretty small, and I can imagine it getting busy on a weekend morning, but Monday morning was no problem. Another bonus: It's in a residential area, and there is ample free street parking. read more

THE best breakfast spot! We've only recently discovered this place, sadly. The most amazing Bloody Mary...all ingredients made/infused here. Hamlet omelette w/spinach added was great. I adore Junior's! The decor, the fabulously engaged and sweet servers, (which in this town of effing pretentious hipsters who act like you are gum on their shoe is a refreshing change), the fantastic and hearty breakfasts. Today I had one of the best breakfasts I have ever put in my gob. Cheddar garlic grits and red eye gravy with a soft egg, 2 slices of bacon, crispy potatoes with caramelized onions and asparagus. We both love this place. The staff are the best, waitress is like a best friend from high school; very outgoing and so proud to be herself, love her! She really takes care of you too! The man with the spatula is the man you wished was your Uncle or closer. This guy really gives a shit as to what he is to serve you, never had anything that wasn't the best ; I thank him every time we depart. Our favorites are the Migas for me and the GF loves everything ; she cleans her plate every time. I should mention we show up at 7: 57 on Sundays and wait till they tell us to "come on in" they open at 8. Everything we have ever requested was PERFECT! Waitress 5+ stars ; the best. Food always 5 stars, we have never had a complaint ; always very tasty, and always very filling. We will always return here on account of their consistency and customer service.
