Sushi/sashimi was not fresh, tasteless and they had kept it in such a cold fridge that the middle was still frozen! The rolls were better, I guess. If you're into "trendy" sushi... I.e. tons of spicy mayo and tempura crunch etc. Also there was some weird neon flashing light on the serving platter which was way too distracting. The hot sake wasn't very good either, still tasted cheap. We tried the vegetable tempura (too much batter), the fried calamari (too tough/rubbery) and the Chilean sea bass spring rolls (good, but forgettable) as appetizers too. I really wanted to like this place for fresh fish and inventiveness but sadly it just wasn't good. And of course overpriced. I hate to give it one star though because our waitress was just too darn nice and perfectly attentive! For Astoria I think I'll stick to Watawa. read more

This used to be my desperate "go to" place when other sushi places were too busy to deliver or I wasn't in the mood for the long wait. Unfortunately, this has changed. The past two times I have ordered, the fish was NOT fresh and the spicy tuna looked funky. I knew I shouldn't have eaten the food but I had no choice really becasue 1. I bought it and 2. I was huuuuuuuuuuungry. I had ordered spicy tuna, California roll, and Shrimp Tempura. When I received my take out order, I noticed there was no straw for my drink, napkins, or a fork/chop sticks. Once I opened the container that had my sushi, a pungent smell of old fish came out. Thinking it was just my mind playing a trick, I tried the spicy tuna and it tasted awfully off and very rubbery... Very very disappointing. I ordered via GrubHub and paid with my CC. I left a tip on the card as I had no cash. When the delivery guy got here, which was admittedly very quickly, he gave me a nasty look and slammed my building door when I didn't give him a cash tip. I ordered miso soup, a fancy shrimp tempura/spicy tuna/avocado roll (Manhattan Roll), a piece of inari sushi, a piece of white tuna sushi and a piece of salmon sushi. The total was near $30. First off, for the big roll and 3 pieces of sushi I ordered, they only gave me half of a small plastic condiment cup of soy sauce. LAME! The miso soup was probably the worst I've ever had. It was almost clear and tasted like warm water with a bit of salt in it. I threw it away. The salmon sushi was okay, but cut very sloppily. The Manhattan roll was very very bland. The spicy tuna wasn't spiced in the least and was just sort of a tasteless pink paste on top of the roll. I couldn't force myself to eat more than half of it. Here's why they earned 1 star from me: The piece of white tuna sushi was completely rotten. It was so old, it was sour and tingled on my tongue like it was carbonated. Food came quickly, but the wasabi was almost runny, the edamame was cold in places, like was frozen and the brown rice was bland/falling off my roll. I was very hungry, so I accepted it as fine. However, shortly into the meal, I started to feel very sick. This place has a 5 star rating on Seamless, but going through the reviews, I discovered that several people have complained of feeling ill after eating their food. They are consistently on time, usually within 25 minutes of my order on seamless, I am already eating, (for reference, I am two subway stops away from this location). The sushi is always delicious and fresh. Only 2 weeks old and despite a few issues, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Junko, as did my company. The location is great, right on the corner with big windows from floor to ceiling letting you watch the busy Broadway street. I enjoy the view but there are also less busy tables towards the back. Immediately upon entering we were showered with greeting from the staff and sushi chefs, nice enthusiasm, friendly, accommodating service. Nice large menu, many sushi options as well as a wide variety of cooked dishes, i look forward to returning to try the yellowtail collar. We started with a large portion of edemame, which was perfectly seasoned and delicious. Complements of the kitchen we were given an order of fried whitefish. Whitefish is so simple and bland, and the texture is not that appealing either, so their fried preparation was perfect. Very crispy but not oily, surrounded by a few sauces including spicy mayo. Very tasty appetizer, i would love to see them do this with salmon or another fatty fish. The sushi rolls were on the whole very good. The fish itself was good, not the best I've had, not do I believe its the best in Astoria (that distinction still goes to JJ's). The rolls that were not covered in sauce or fried were just alright, both the Salmon roll and the White Tuna and Avocado were not particularly memorable, but still enjoyable. All fresh fish, nothing we did not enjoy The presentation was excellent but at times a bit strange, one plate came with Strawberries on the side, although it was not clear what it was meant to be eaten with, if anything at all. Also the Banana Leaf over the sushi was a nice decoration but strange to have inedible food sandwiched between edible food. The sauces, presentation, size of the rolls and value was all very good; I was also happy with the depth of the sushi menu, so overall the food was very good. I'd stick with the elaborate multi-fish rolls, the one covered in eel was excellent. I like the fact that it is a big place and I don't feel like i'm rushed during my meal. A few of the places I like in Astoria are too small to, so this is a welcomes addition to the neighborhood. The servers went over and above to ensure we were having a good meal and were very friendly. They filled up our water every few minutes. I'd drop the top 40's music, but that's just me. So far this is my go-to sushi delivery place for now. They're fast, have only a $10 minimum on seamless, and my orders are correct. I've also eaten here twice and the service is nice and attentive. Food wise, the sushi is mediocre at best. The sushi rice is cold, falls apart easily, and has no hint of rice vinegar. Fish quality is ok. I do like that they offer a spicy scallop roll though, I don't see that often. I think I've been lazy to try a few other places in the neighborhood but will be making more of an effort to do so. read more

They were fairly forgiving with their portion sizes, but could have been more generous in my opinion. The food wasn't bad and they put effort into it. If you want above par sushi, this is not a bad place to go in Astoria. ATMOSPHERE: Very transparent, open to the street and clean. On a given nice day, this is a great place to sit, chat and people watch. Great interior designing and opening to the pedestrian level. SERVICE: Above average. They check up on you and do a decent job. SUMMARY: If you are near broadway in Astoria, this is probably the best sushi location you can go. Came here and got the lunch special which is 2 rolls for 7.95$ & 3 rolls for 9.95$ when I first enter this place they immediately greet us and we sat next to the sushi bar but the awk thing is that one of the man who worked there kept staring at us & the stare is kinda like a pervert which is really uncomfortable and eavesdropping with what me & my friend were talking. When I first went here I was really excited. A good sushi place close to home. There are not too many in Astoria. There is only JJ's, which is close to me and out of this world in my opinion (for both sushi and cooked food). I have heard good reviews of Watawa but it's a bit of a trek from my place so I haven't tried it yet. Anyway, on to my Junko experience. I ate here twice and the first time I was pretty impressed with the sushi. It was of decent quality and was nicely presented. I forget the name of the rolls but they definitely have a HUGE selection of special rolls if you're into those. I did have 2 appetizers too: the lobster ravioli and the crab cakes. Both were OK but their sauces were very sweet and some didn't taste homemade (aka directly from a jar). The second time I came here really ruined it for me. As my wife was eating her sushi she bit down hard on a piece of bone and hurt herself! Thank God she didn't swallow it or she might have choked! That ruined the rest of our dinner and we couldn't eat anymore. The quality of the rest of the sushi seemed to have gone down too since the first time we went there, plus their prices aren't that cheap either. I had been ordering from TJ's Asian Bistro for my sushi fix so frequently that it was becoming embarrassing. So embarrassing that the delivery guy (towering Asian dude with a moped helmet on his head) would give me a look as if to say, "You again?" So I decided to try Junko Sushi. Gosh I really wanted to like it as much as TJ's. I ordered the 3 roll lunch special (Alaskan roll, spicy salmon roll and pumpkin tempura roll). The Alaskan roll was okay, nothing more than a salmon roll with avocado inside the roll. Spicy salmon was better and the pumpkin tempura was very good - crispy panko and sweet pumpkin with a melty mouthfeel. My friend had the chirashi lunch special. His first bite into the tuna slice and he gave a look that said, "I just put something that isn't fresh in my mouth." He looked like he wanted to spit it out, but he ate it anyhow. I'm just waiting til his meal comes to bite him back in the a__. The accompanying miso soup had a chalky taste. The salad had some browning leaves (mix of Boston lettuce and mesclun). When I opened the salad dressing container, the edge had a rim of sauce stuck to the top, indicating that it's probably been on the shelves a little too long. Junko Sushi's delivery was under 20 minutes so that was good. But I'm apologizing to TJ's delivery guy in advance because he's going to see a lot more of me in the future. read more

stopped in for lunch on a saturday and had the 3 rolls special for $11.95. i asked for a spicy tuna roll w.o crunch (this was really good with nice amount of spice), yellowtail jalapeno (not on their lunch special but i just had jalapeno added to the spicy yellowtail roll and was not charged extra. i would've liked if a few seeds were kept with the jalapeno), and an oshinko roll (not the best i've ever had but still good). the rice was cooked really well - not hard but not mushy and still warm. the size of the rolls was average in my opinion but the meal was satisfying. i loved that the spicy sauce did not taste like mayo. i'm surprised reviewers have said they taste the mayo. i am normally sensitive to the first sign of it. the lunch special included both miso soup and salad, but i don't like miso soup so i was offered a bigger salad. i don't know the size of a regular salad with this lunch special but i was happy with the size i received. the restaurant looks clean and the service was quick. i would recommend and will be back. read more

This is my roommate and my "go to" sushi place. Sushi places are a dime a dozen in neighborhoods like Astoria, but this one is the one we always choose. Prices are good, service is nice, sushi is fresh, menu is large with tons of options, and the beer is COLD. In the nice weather all the doors are open and its just a great place to have a reasonably priced sushi night. I've never had delivery from here because there is something about delivered sushi I don't trust. But I would highly recommend this place. read more

Not too much flavor, but at the same time you don't have to worry about being thirsty for the rest of the night! I am quite satisfied with the texture of the udon. Quite chewy, not too soft, not too hard!! Spicy tuna rolls: They are quite standard usually, but the amount of tuna they put in it was crazy!!! Dined here on opening day. Sushi is my favorite food and I have eaten it all over the place in varying degrees of goodness. Service was a tad slow but the waitress apologized and noted that the staff was still getting in the swing of things. Sushi was quite good. Everything tasted fresh and I was definitely pleased. I generally avoid overly complex rolls and also avoid anything with spicy mayo or cream cheese. Although there were a lot of those, their straight fish+cucumber+rice rolls were very good. My roommate got one of their complex rolls and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I have since gotten take-out from here and thought it was still very good. Had dinner here opening day, and the food was quite good. It's easily the best sushi I've had in the neighborhood. I may revise this later with a different rating but I'll need to eat a few more meals first before I feel comfortable giving out 5 stars. The fried dumplings were fantastic (although a little cheap with the fillings). the bottoms were perfectly crisp, and the sides were silky smooth and thin. They probably serve them like that in heaven, except there Jesus would be my sushi chef and he'd put put more pork in my dumplings. That's why Jesus gets the sweet tips. My spicy tuna roll was great. Very fresh-tasting, and had bits of tempura in it that were completely unexpected and added a lot to the mouth feel, staying crunchy even when drowned in mayo and soy sauce up until the end. At least, I think it was tuna. There were 3 different types of spicy fish in their maki combo special, and they all looked pretty similar with the spicy mayo mixed in, and no one told me what was what. There was definitely good stuff on my plate, whatever it was. I'm all for decorative plating, but I didn't really see the point of them putting a large banana leaf (or whatever it was) on my plate. That can be done well if ...done well, but they just used some of my rolls as a paperweight and pinched them against the rest of the rolls to make half the leaf stand straight up. It didn't need a sail; it was a plate, not a boat. Typing that now it sounds like it shouldn't have been an issue, but I couldn't get it out of the way without flipping over half of my plate, it was annoying to dig around behind for other rolls, and since they didn't provide some sort of soy sauce plate, I had to pour soy sauce directly onto my rolls. By the end of my meal my plate was a mess of soy and wasabi and the banana leaf may or may not have flapped a nasty mess on the table. Part of that was also due to the fancy earthenware soy sauce pots they use. If you don't pour quickly enough, it dribbles down the length of the dispenser and off the bottom. But hey, they've got kanji on them so at least they're authentic-looking. Maybe I'm just incapable of eating in public. It could be late-onset clumsiness. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since it was their first day and they're still learning what works and doesn't work. The food was definitely worth going back for, though. One last thing: I've worked very hard and ruined many shirts getting my chopstick skills up to snuff over the years. Please don't give me a fork first next time. I ordered confidently, and with good pronunciation. I did not seem confused when I walked in, nor ask if you served hamburgers. Please, going forward, give your customers the benefit of the doubt. The delivery man, although disgruntled and gruff, was here half an hour later! This was awesome. I ordered a white tuna avocado roll with brown rice, which was not as good as I thought it would be. The tuna was a bit tasteless, next time I'll stick with the spicy tuna roll. The Junko roll, which consists of tuna, lobster, eel, avocado, with blue crab on top, was a bit crazy, but actually was pretty delicious. I could not taste all the separate types of seafood, but the overall effect was yum. I also got a half order of the sea bass spring roll since they did not have any more sea urchin, and it tasted very much like an ordinary spring roll. Perhaps a little lighter. Junko Sushi, it's been open I would think at least a year or two now and well, I finally made my way here after a random walk around the neighborhood. We ordered the seabass spring roll, duck fried rice, and super spicy tuna roll. We were informed that the seabass spring roll was made to order and would take 20 minutes to prepare. We were more than willing to wait and I was quite pleased that they actually do make things to order here! First to come out was the sushi rolls. My super spicy tuna roll wasn't super spicy at all, but was incredibly large. It was probably about twice the size of a normal sushi roll, and despite not being super spicy, it was very good. It was absolutely stuffed with meat, the cheese and panko crust just gave it the right flavor and texture. The seabass spring rolls were absolutely fantastic and would highly recommend them. Unfortunately I way overestimated how much food I would be able to consume and I was not able to even try my duck fried rice so I packed it up. Glad to know there's another decent sushi restaurant in Astoria since it seems like they're literally dozens of them on broadway, 30th, and ditmars. read more

I live right down the street to this new sushi joint. I am a huge fan of JJ's on 31st ave and i assumed that Junko's wouldnt compare...but i was so wrong! The sushi was absolutely amazing! It melted in your mouth and tasted so fresh. They had such a variety of rolls to choose from. Me and my boyfriend got the pork dumplings, a manhattan roll, shrimp tempura roll, and an eel avacado roll and our total bill was barley $30.00! i was blown away at how cheap it was and how great the service was. It is my new favorite sushi place. Although i still do like JJ's, Junko's has it beat by its cheaper prices! They are one of my regular takeout options offering a variety of sushi and dinner plates on their menu to choose from with reasonable prices. I've been here a handful of times. It's quick and easy with a cheap lunch special and fast, simple service. It's your average sushi, nothing to write home about and in a convenient location with really good prices. Not bad at all, just not extraordinary either. I've only tried the lunch special so I can't comment on any of their super rolls or special rolls or anything. My guess is they do pretty well though since they've been around for a long time and always have a bit of a crowd here. The place itself is a bit small but clean and they have a good amount of seating with outdoor seating as well. I doubt this place will become your new go-to sushi spot but it's good enough that you can easily become a regular here, especially with the decent prices they have. read more

Great times at Junko sushi!!!! The restaurant has some of the best rolls and miso soup ive ever eaten. Not to mention I tried Plum Wine for the first time and it has become a fan favorite. Terrible sushi. I came here with my brother and we couldn't eat more than one piece each before politely asking staff to wrap it up to-go so we didn't seem rude. The rice was rock hard and the fish was the furthest thing from fresh. Our food also came suspiciously fast, and the restaurant was very humid and warm inside (not okay to store raw fish in).
