Disgusting food and rude customer service Please avoid this place at all cost! I should have read these negative reviews before ordering from here. I never complain about my food, but this place was by far the worst sushi I have ever had. My sushi came hot, and the fish tasted like they were left in a broken fridge. The rolls were all disassembled and swimming in a watery sauce. The tempura was extremely soggy. I call for a refund and was prompted to retrieve the disgusting food from the trash bin by hand. I then received a rude call from the owner yelling at me for not picking up all the food (at 10PM cleaning a toddler who threw up this food) and refusing any compensation. Please save yourself time and money and order from any other place. Update 1: I did contact Junko first, and I explained that it was already in the tall trash bin outside. Retrieving the food was humiliating. Retreiving the food at 10pm in the dark, and only to get a laugh from you on the phone does not really help the situation. Seamless was kind enough to offer me $15 back. I would not hold my breath for another chance to "service better". Update 2: Yelp deleted this as an updated review, but people should know since it is dangerous. Removed Content: Read a news article and this restaurant had been closed down for health violations. The owner obviously has turns a blind eye to his business and fails to recognize this shortcomings when being called out. Sanitary Violations 1) Hot food item not held at or above 140º F. 2) Cold food item held above 41º F (smoked fish and reduced oxygen packaged foods above 38 ºF) except during necessary preparation. 3) Evidence of rats or live rats present in facility's food and/or non-food areas. 4) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas. 5) Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred. 6) Facility not vermin proof. Finally! A place that has a spicy 3 roll combo where all 3 rolls are amazing (tuna, salmon, white tuna). All that and a peanut sauce salad for just $14.50. It's great sushi on a budget, but I really don't think it tastes cheap. Sure it's not master grade quality but I think this place does the trick. We also got edamame beans and while the serving size was large, they weren't salted that much. There is limited table space and we did feel like we were rushed out of the place towards the end of our meal, but I wouldn't hold that against them. read more

The eggs looked bigger than I'm used to seeing and it had a chemical-like taste. Not what I'm used to. What a pleasant surprise! We were a party of four strolling down Broadway looking for some sushi last night, and this was the first place we came across. At just before 8:00 pm, it wasn't too crowded, and the menu wasn't too pricey. Good enough for me. We started off with a bottle of plum wine, which was eventually upgraded to two, and placed two orders of the "sushi for two," which the staff upgraded to one order of sushi for four. As an added bonus, we got edamame on the house. Sweet! Now, while food is important, the true marker of quality at any restaurant is the service. And oh, what service it was! Everyone was so friendly, patient, and seemed very happy to have us there. It helped that our gigantic sushi boat arrived with a glowing ball of color-changing lights in the middle (come on, that would impress you too, don't lie). But overall, our experience was enhanced by the kind waitstaff at Junko. Sushi is pretty standard, nothing to write home about. Though the hako sushi rolls (I think that's what it was called - the avocado rolls topped with three kinds of fish and tasty mayo that came with the sushi boat) were exceptional. A great new addition to Broadway! There are many sushi places in Astoria, but few are memorable - and Junko seems to understand that it has to go above and beyond the usual food and service to have staying power. I must say: so far, so good! The first time I came here was last week for an unexpected lunch meetup with Nick, the owner of Yoga Agora who had nothing but good things to say about the place. I ordered the tofu lunch bento box, which came with dumplings and sushi and, I believe, cooked mushrooms (always a plus for me). I also ordered three vegetarian rolls (another lunch special combo), but I didn't realize how much food was going to come out, and I didn't come close to finishing. Guys, their lunch is a GREAT deal. And the server went out of her way to make sure we felt spoiled but not annoyed. I was also really impressed with the ambience - interesting decor, from the ceiling treatment to the roses on the thick paper napkins. Lots of windows to let natural light in, and a pleasingly subdued acoustic station. I came back with friends for dinner. The only thing I liked less about Junko's at night was the loud pop music. I understand that Broadway is full of noisy restaurants/clubs with fist-pumping action, but I'd love to hear a low-key station here - more acoustic, or classical japanese music, or even trip-hop for a hip, cool atmosphere. That said, I still enjoyed the decor, and the service was still stellar. I really appreciated how polite the staff was. Sushi presentation was different and cool, if bordering on funny with the glowing volcanoes! Memorable at least, though. Everyone enjoyed their sushi, including my guy who's not necessarily a fan of sushi. And my vegetarian dragon roll was to die for. Raspberry sauce, what?! We were served a complimentary appetizer; with our check they brought us fresh oranges, cut and quartered, with toothpicks for our consumption. Much classier than a mint, and thoroughly enjoyed. 3.49 stars. Is it the best sushi in the world? No, but it's the best bang for your buck in this part of Astoria. All of your typical rolls (tuna, tuna avocado, salmon, salmon avocado, eel, dragon, rainbow, etc.) in addition to other typical Japanese menu items such as chicken/beef teriyaki, yaki-udon are here as well. For the most part when the food is fresh and done well, it's flavorful and filling. Don't expect some high end-like Omakase sushi. But it's sushi and Japanese food for those who just crave it for a weekend in at home (or out) without having to trek outside of the area. The service here has always been pretty good and I've never had any issues. Seating is pretty good and they've even accommodated a large party of ten+ for me once. read more

The sushi is excellent quality and they take my accommodations in to account. A friend of mine does paleo and they were able to make her sushi without rice, no questions asked. My three friends and I were seated immediately as no one was in there aside from one other person (who left not too long after we sat down). No music was playing and while we understood they closed at 11PM on Saturdays, it was only 9:45PM. The server was very nice and attentive. I wanted to taste the plum wine, but was told they had no more for the night. When I asked about trying sake for the first time, he was knowledgable and helpful in choosing the right one for me to try. I went with the Nigori Creme de Sake. It was deliciously smooth and sweet. The Sake was a cute, small-sized bottle and our server provided two shot glasses- as requested. For only $15 there were about 10 shots worth in the bottle. Food was great! The Dragon, Sweetie, House Special, and 3rd Avenue Rolls as well as a Chicken Teriyaki were ordered. There are no compaints about the presentation or the quality. There were moments where my friends and I wouldn't talk (because. food.) or anything and we would be reminded there was no music playing in the background. Towards the end of our visit it felt like we were being an inconvenience because there was no music playing so we naturally felt rushed. Staff was very nice though. A lady said "goodbye" also hoped we would come again. I just feel like there are other sushi spots on Broadway in Astoria and will check those out before coming back to Junko. read more

Ordered takeout and it arrived 15 minutes sooner than estimated - and it was an order for 2 hungry people on Friday night. Even so, it was clearly fresh prepped. Several sushi rolls, all nicely formed, heavy toppings and spicy mayo on the side (ok so I asked them to hold it, but they probably thought "maybe just have a little", so yes that's what I did!). Not sure why this place doesn't have higher reviews - maybe the in person dining experience isn't amazing, or they just have off nights? I've only ordered delivery and although the food isn't mindblowing, I always have a pretty solid experience. I got dumplings the first few times I ordered, but they're definitely worth skipping as they aren't super flavorful. The spring rolls are really good as is the rock shrimp tempura. I always order the Godzilla roll and it's always really good and never disappoints. Pretty quick delivery (to 30th ave area) and always get solid food. Definitely a good delivery option! read more

I have been here once and this is based on my single visit. The staff was nice and that was just about it. The store was almost empty and I should have taken that as the first sign. I have been to many Japanese restaurants; this place is pretty much the worst so far. We ordered a roll and an order of udon. The roll was so unevenly made, some pieces had little bit of rice which was scattered with empty spots, some with a bit more rice but still lacking. The rolls would fall apart when we try to dip them in soy sauce. I could make better rolls than this. Actually, anyone off the streets could make a better roll than what they served me. The udon was the highlight of their failure. It was simply veggie water with noodles. It wasn't made with any sea food broth, instead it tasted like cabbage water. It was so bland I didn't finish it even though I was hungry. Instant udons taste much better than this. It may be healthy, but I wouldn't pay to eat this again. I am surprised to find so many positive reviews, perhaps this is acceptable in Astoria. I just feel bad for the kind wait staff, they have to serve bad food and their tips would suffer. I would highly recommend you stay away from this place even if you are hungry. read more

It is with regret I vote just 2 stars for Junko, because in the past I would have given them 5. I would give them 1 star but most of my complaints have to do with whenever I have ordered from here, rather than going there in person, so I'll focus my review on that... The trend seems to be that the more sushi you order, the better the quality will be and the quicker the delivery. I'm a huge fan of their Volcano Roll and the Deluxe Rainbow Roll, as well as their spicy salmon salad (with mango. Highly recommend). My complaint is that, as most sushi restaurants go, it's fairly expensive and I have had some pretty terrible experiences with the quality of the food in recent months. Once, when I ordered just for me and only picked a salmon avocado roll and a spicy tuna roll, the sushi was frozen in the middle and the avocado was brown - I wound up throwing it out. The last time I ordered I got my favorite (the deluxe rainbow), and this time I went nuts and ordered fried rice too, and my rainbow roll was falling apart, the avocado was brown again, and the fish tasted old, (ack, horrible). Then, the fried rice was half-cooked and flavorless, but over-salted. If I had been at the restaurant, I would have sent it back. I would recommend checking out other sushi restaurants in Astoria, particularly Pink Nori, which is less expensive and always great/fresh quality. read more

The food was decent, sushi and teriyaki chicken, but when we got the receipt we were surprised and upset to see that the prices charged were more than the prices on the menu. We bought it up to the waitress and to the person in charge only to be told that prices of everything has gone up and they did not get the new menu yet. We asked when the menu prices went up, they told us it's been a month. This review is in regards to delivery, just as a heads up. Firstly, they prepared the food very quickly and it was still kept nice and warm. The quality of the food is very good too, even though it was delivered. I ordered a yaki-udon and a dancing shrimp roll and they were both delicious. The roll stood out to me more because of how unique it was. It had tempura shrimp and lobster with mango and avocado topping it, and it came with a delicious sweet and spicy sauce that really brought out the flavor. The Yaki-udon is good too, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. The delivery driver was great because he followed instructions perfectly (since I ordered from GrubHub). I found this important to note because I've had times where the delivery drivers completely neglect what I've noted for them to do, but I'm glad they put extra care. A point for great customer service via delivery. I would love to give them five stars but I would like to visit the establishment itself before I do so. Other than that, this restaurant seems very promising and I would definitely order from them again. read more

They should re-name this restaurant "Junk Sushi". The crab cakes not only contain no crab, but what little of "crab" is hiding amongst all the breadcrumbs is the garbage imitation crab stick stuff. Pretty hard to make flat out disgusting crab cakes, but they have mastered it, for sure. Their special rolls were over-sauced, the rice over-cooked, and our "Dancing shrimp" roll was dancing right off our chopsticks, because they kept falling apart. We also had the the King roll and the Lovers roll. I've been to plenty sushi spots were I have ordered lobster in my rolls, and you get actual lobster, not some mashed up substance which keeps you guessing Not the type of Yelper who gives negative reviews but this was bad. Real bad. We actually rushed to get Rolaids as soon as we left. We should have known this place was a disaster when I went to the restroom before we ordered, and it was in shambles. Oh well. Hey Junko, you're taking a pretty big business risk with a name like that... This place had its ups and downs. The decor is pretty nice and I like that the servers give out moist towelettes before the meal. That being said...there were some things that were definitely wrong about this place. One was that the servers rushed us like crazy. (If I put my menu down for one second it doesn't mean I know what I'm going to eat. First world pet peeve.) Our waiter took my drink menu and when I said I wasn't sure, he only tipped it downwards when I looked visibly confused. The acoustics/setup must be off because there was a girl two tables away from us and she was so insanely loud, there was no way not to hear it. The servers were talking and super loud as well. It was really distracting. And, the food. The miso soup came out suspiciously quickly and tasted like it was taken from the bottom of a big pot. I ordered the godzilla roll and worried that it would be a bit too spicy, since it was listed as having spicy tuna and spicy sauce...I had nothing to worry about because there was zero spice. Sushi/sashimi was not fresh, tasteless and they had kept it in such a cold fridge that the middle was still frozen! The rolls were better, I guess. If you're into "trendy" sushi... I.e. tons of spicy mayo and tempura crunch etc. Also there was some weird neon flashing light on the serving platter which was way too distracting. The hot sake wasn't very good either, still tasted cheap. We tried the vegetable tempura (too much batter), the fried calamari (too tough/rubbery) and the Chilean sea bass spring rolls (good, but forgettable) as appetizers too. I really wanted to like this place for fresh fish and inventiveness but sadly it just wasn't good. And of course overpriced. I hate to give it one star though because our waitress was just too darn nice and perfectly attentive! For Astoria I think I'll stick to Watawa. read more
