3.5 stars really. My first thought about walking in here? Whoaa...the bathrooms are right there. Hahaha. The layout of this place is wide open as you walk in, order to the left, and the bathrooms at the back, but it's kinda funny cause you have a clear view to the bathrooms as you walk in. But don't let that deter you from eating here. I quite liked it. I'm hoping this place will do well, since the other taco place in the same spot had closed down within a few months. We'll see. Parking has always sucked at this plaza though so be prepared to maybe do some street parking. Or just come during off hours. This place is modeled after Chipotle in terms of ordering. Pick tacos (1.95), burritos (5.95), tortas (5.95) and some other options (salad, quesadilla, nachos). Then pick your meat, rancheros, carnitas, lengua (tongue), chicken, fish, or vegetarian. Choose your toppings, pico de gallo, salsas, sour cream, lettuce, cilantro, onion, cheese, or guac. Then you move on to pay for your meal...cash only though! I ended up getting 2 tacos, a carnitas and a lengua. Not the tiny little tacos either, the 6 inch soft taco size packed with stuff! Yummyyy...and very fresh too. I liked both of them. The carnitas had good pork flavor, tender, and a bit saucy. Bit drippy. The lengua was also good, not as flavorful as the carnitas, but had that chewiness. Also got chips and salsa for 2 dollars too. Total 7.30 for my meal. Not bad lunch at all, and shared my chips too. I thought the tacos did look better than the burritos other people had ordered...but I'm not big on burritos. The people here were pretty nice, not chit chatty but just efficient more. They have this super high glass window though when ordering which makes it hard for them to hear you. If you're short like me...I tried to stand where the gaps in the glass were..which seemed to work out ahah. The decor of this place is kinda fun, the back wall is painted a bright teal blue, other walls a bright red orange. They use a chili pepper with a face and a hat and rainbows in their signage. Plenty of seating that can fit several large groups. Though kinda mashed together for some reason. I liked this place better than Chipotle...sorry Chipotle! Cheaper, some unusual options (lengua), and of course I prefer smaller places. They just make things fresh and good, not amazingly great, but I liked the tacos I had. I paid over 13.00 for pure garbage! Honestly....if you like the way dog food taste then this is your place! I don't mind paying for good food no matter what the price but this was crap! The so called carne asada smelled like old grease. I am not a picky eater so please take heed. The meat at this place is bargain basement meat!!! The ham had greasy little bubbles on it. I always come here with my sister after work when we're craving warm comfort food. The place seems like a hole in the wall type, but it's always clean, and because for some reason, no one really comes here for dinner, it feels spacious. Service is always excellent, free chips and salsa, plenty of water refills. Sometimes my sister will ask for pico de gallo, and they'll throw in guac, as well. As for the food, I realize their name has "Tacos" in it, and it sounds like a lot of people come here looking for them and then become disappointed. I've never actually ordered tacos here myself, but my sister likes them enough. But in my opinion, if you come here, you really should try their plates or even soups. I've ordered: carne asada plate, grilled chicken plate, camaron ala diabla, garlic shrimp plate, and caldo de camaron many times. I have never been disappointed. I come here when I'm craving homecooked meals, though let's be honest, I can't grill or cook nearly that well :p Aaaand... as my sister and I were walking to the car just now, the waiter came up to us and handed me my purse... that I left in the booth. I got fish tacos and I think they used ceviche meat, it was fucking nasty. Incredible tiny portions. Very fishy tasting and there was no filet, just tiny bits. The price on the menu didn't reflect the price on the bill. I got charged 5 dollars for a soda and 1 dollar for a bottle of water. They don't have tap water. The bar is cool but no one is there to serve you so you have to catch the one waiter if you want any service. I essentially at most my meal without anything to drink because no one checked up. Saturday, June 15th '13, was the first time I tried Villa Tacos for lunch. Ordered the wet burrito with al pastor and a modelo especial. Chips were standard and nothing great about them. However, their salsa was amazing! Full of flavor and packed some heat - the way a good salsa should. My burrito looked a bit charred on one side which wasn't appealing...not to mention the small pool of oil it was sitting in. Once cutting into it, I saw it mostly consisted of rice/beans and not much al pastor in sight. Taking a closer look at the al pastor I was discouraged by it's funky orangy color. Though the burrito was unsatisfactory I may be willing to give them another try. Perhaps their tlayudas and carne asada will be better. read more

Great little place to escape the heat from! Came in for lunch after a medical app and searched for the closest Mexican place around. I almost didn't find it the name through me off but once in I was hooked. I tried the chilaquilez con asada. I added two over easy eggs and a big frosty michelada. The chilaquilez are on the crispy side and great for those who don't like soggy chips. The attending waitres was very kind and helpful and she helped me decide between the house burrito and what I ended up getting. Definitely highly recommend! read more

I came here looking for lengua, but they didn't have it. :( Had al pastor burrito and carnitas torta instead, and both were plainly average. Bread on the torta was dry and crusty. They give free chips and salsa which is great, but it tastes like they bought it from the store, just not very good. I ordered the two taco dish with carne asada and regretted it once I took my first bite. The meat was so tough and tasted weird. I tried to drench it with the lime but the meat still tasted weird. I gave up and just didn't eat the tacos because it was just gross. The rice and beans were the only things that were actually good, but that's hard to mess up. Tonight my fiance and I decided to give Villa Tacos a try before we went to see "Rio" the movie. The server was very nice but I literally signed up for Yelp because I thought this review was necessary. My fiance is Mexican and he felt the Torta he ordered was the WORST he ever had in his life. It wasn't the right color, absorbed a ton of grease and he is feeling pretty sick but is doing well by laying in bed at the moment. Myself on the other hand, simply ordered cheese enchiladas. Although the red mole was splendid the tortillas were undercooked and something tasted off to me. I only ate 1/3 of my dish because I started to feel woozy. By the time we made it to the movie theater about 5 blocks away I gave my boyfriend some money to buy the tickets since it was my turn for date night and I scrambled to the bathroom so I could throw up. I threw up 4 times before the movie and now that I'm home I threw up another 5. I know it was nothing else I ate today because I didn't eat anything else today. I would continue this review but I am going back to the bathroom to have another session and I intend to call the owner tomorrow. Vegetarian review incoming. Hole in the wall local place. The free chips and salsa were delicious while we waited for our cheese quesadilla and a la carte red enchilada. We also ordered two mango margaritas. I don't know what liquor license they have, and there really wasn't any discernable alcohol in the margaritas, so they may have been virgin. They were tasty and refreshing and cheap, so we aren't fussed. But I think if you are drinking, stick to beer here. The food was delicious and we will be back. The cheese quesadilla was really really good, and yes it's just a cheese sandwich, but the tortilla was fresh and so was the sweet mild cheese. I think the cheese might be homemade, it's that fresh. The quacamole was just ok, though. The highlight is the red enchilada. My wife ordered it a la carte for a whopping $3, and it was awesome. The red sauce was blow your head off spicy with a deep smoky chili flavor. You could put this on your shoe and it would taste great. I have been to their other location off Santa Monica Blvd and I was an immediate fan, love the different Mole options and the Oaxan style! This one is walking distance to work and my favorite lunch-time option as they are quick, fresh and yummy! I also go to them when we have meetings or small group parties since they are reasonably priced and they deliver! Super friendly staff and accommodating you feel like you're right at home here and the food is home-made! My rule of thumb when it comes to Mexican food restaurants is to try their rice and beans, if it tastes like my grandma made it, then its authentic in my book! (For some surprising reason, other restaurants stopped or just don't do this!) Since we haven't been inside, I cannot speak to their drink selection, location, parking, and/of service.... maybe one day? Villa Tacos came highly recommended from a friend of a friend, so I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, and I will likely give this joint a second chance. I ordered two tacos here: al pastor and carnitas. Unfortunately they don't serve lengua. I usually order al pastor or carnitas AND lengua to test out a new taqueria. The carnitas taco was dry and too hard. The al pastor meat was pretty tasty, not drenched in oil like a lot of places like to do. But both tacos were lacking. They didn't have their own salsas so I used the salsa that came with my chips. The salsa was okay but didn't blow me away. I think the irony of my disappointment here was that I don't think I ordered the right thing. Although "tacos" are in the name, it doesn't seem like their specialty. That said, Villa Tacos serves up some decent Mexican fare and has not disappointed me so far. Portions are pretty large and everything is very decently priced. I love their burritos, the tacos are not bad to boot, and the chips are definitely made with some kind of crack because you can't. stop. eating. them. I also always come away with plenty of leftovers to spare! Regarding service, however, it IS pretty slow and the minutes really drag on if you're sitting there hungry. I looked here on Yelp for a place that had menudo, this was the closest to our place. Called to ask and yes, they had some! I've been eating menudo since I was a kid and in very particular about the look, taste, and extras. Now the place isn't huge and parking can be a hassle. It's in a strip with several other business. So don't get impatient. The inside is clean and simple. Not too much decor. The menu is small, the basic, most recognized Mexican dishes. You won't be wondering what it is you're ordering. My boyfriend ordered a Beef Quesadilla. It looked delicious, lots of cheese and meet and big enough to share. I can't eat cheese so I didn't try it. The menudo was a standard size bowl. With Serrano, onions, and cilantro on the side with plenty of lime. I was missing the oregano. I was disappointed no hominy... Menudo with no hominy is pretty much tripe soup. It was hot and with the right amount of spice. It had the big bone with cartilage that folks like to suck on... I don't! Off to the side that went. I ate most of it, I wanted all of it, but had to stop I was so full. After I ate all the meat I threw in pieces of tortilla, the way I did when I was a kid... Rico! Alicia, the server was attentive and pleasant. She was the only server on duty, but it was slow. We got everything we needed, but then we're not high maintenance. Overall, I'd recommend it for the Sunday menudo cravings. I'd go back and try something different. I even bought some "pan dulce" to bring home and attempt to have for dessert. I almost forgot to mention the chips & salsa. The chips were thick and crispy and the salsa was delicious and spicy. Not tomato sauce or lame Pico de Gallo. I really liked it! When a place has fantastic service, it automatically is gets put in my win column. I came in for a weekday lunch and ordered a chicken burrito and coke (in a glass bottle). They brought me chips and salsa while I waited, and the burrito came out within a 2 or 3 minutes. The server was very polite, and the food was good (not best burrito ever). If you live or work nearby, it is a convenient and tasty eatery, but, I won't drive out of my way to come back. Plus, parking in the tiny strip mall would be a pain, I imagine. read more

I'm slightly saddened by the low reviews. But then again I only had the mole and maybe the rest of it is whatever. This place is very unassuming - middle of a strip mall, cheesy looking sign, you know. But my sister and I were in the middle of moving out of our place and there was no way we were about cook. So we walked across the street and she's like, "I am craving Oaxacan." I didn't know it was possible to crave such a thing. And it was super hot and we were tired from moving and the last thing I wanted was a giant plate of rice and beans to put me in a food coma. But since I let her pick, I gave in and we went to Villas. I was very pleasantly surprised. Sure the interior is as unassuming as the exterior. But the service is prompt, your water glasses stay full and HOLY GOD THAT MOLE. It is fabulous. Really outstanding. A hint of chocolate mixed with savory spices in a silky smooth sauce. I had it with the pork and she had it with chorizo and they were both splendid. Not a plate full of rice and bean filler either. It was the perfect level of filling. I'm kind of sad that I didn't try this place out until the day before I moved away. Oh well.
