My heater wasn't working. I left a voice message at JW Hanson on a Sunday afternoon. First thing Monday they called back and said they could come out Wednesday morning but would call me if they got a cancellation to come sooner. Later that morning they called back to say they could come between 1-3. The Tech texted at 1pm to say he was on his way. After arrival he quickly found and fixed the problem and also changed the heater air filter. All taken care of for the service fee of $175. I realize my situation may be somewhat unique in that I have a home built in the early 70s with no AC or ducting (heating system is old hot water hydronic baseboards. Had Will out to investigate putting in a complete HVAC system with heat pumps. Really enjoyed his attitude and great energy. He had great ideas and I was on board. Bottom line, he ghosted us... I called the office a week or 2 after the preliminary visit and he was on vacation. I was assured I'd hear back on his return... an month and a half has passed and crickets. I will add to the reviews saying they don't care about their customers. Apparently there have been a number of HVAC companies in our area retiring or moving, so for the moment there is plenty of work, so they feel they don't have to care about repeat business. I have used this company for 8 years spending thousands of dollars on a radiant heating system which they replaced, serviced and repaired. About 2 years ago, I had them service 3 minisplit AC/Heat units in other buildings on our property. A couple of months ago, I started getting complaints about one that was in a room we use as an "Airbnb". I didn't have a good feeling about the person from Hanson who did this service, so I called a different company to come out and see what was wrong. They found a completely clogged wheel that had 5+ years of dirt in it according to technician (which was when I had previously serviced it). I have attached a video that the technician at Adam's Heating and Cooling made for me. As I mentioned, it was an Airbnb, so had been empty for at least a year of the 2 years since Hanson had done service due to COVID. I contacted Will to ask that he have someone come and check the other 2 supposedly serviced units as I was worried they were probably clogged too and could be dangerous (I didn't ask for a refund for previous service or reimbursement for the $310 it cost to re-service this unit. He basically laughed in my face and told me I was ridiculous for thinking he would stand by service that was 2 years old. I was dumbfounded. He was basically calling me a liar. My husband and I own a large property with many "moving parts" and I have different service people out here almost weekly, and I have NEVER EVER experienced service this atrocious. When it comes to customer service, I can't imagine anyone is better than Hanson Heating and Air! After 20+ years as the original owners of a home in Petaluma, we decided to add air conditioning while replacing our heater. We hired Hanson Heating and Air for the job and they did an outstanding job! Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, we started to have problems with the air conditioning unit. ALL of the staff, from those taking the calls to the technicians coming out, were extremely helpful. While the situation was a bit aggravating, with repeated attempts to repair the unit, the fact we knew Will and everyone at Hanson Heating and Air would take care of us made the process easier to navigate and deal with. In the end, Hanson Heating and Air replaced the unit. It would not surprise me if they did so at a loss, but it was clear they wanted to make sure we were happy. Hanson Heating and Air installed a radiant heating system in our house when we did a remodel in 2016. The first year they returned on complinatary basis to check over the system. It has worked well since installation, except this past winter the boiler had a malfunction. The manufacturer sent courtesy replacement parts even though it was a few months past the warranty period, and Hanson installed those and returned several times when the new parts were not working correctly. But the best part is when they actually did the repairs...the service technician (Austin) was on-time, polite, highly knowledgeable, and willing to keep me abreast of what he was doing. He worked with me beforehand to prioritize which repairs were the most critical, so I didn't end up spending more money than I really needed or wanted to. And when the repairs were complete, the work looked 100% professionally done--no leaks, noises, leftover mess, or other unpleasant surprises. We were working on converting our property from LP (liquified propane) to NG (natural gas). There were several moving parts to this job and Hanson Heating and Air was able to handle them all for me. They converted two furnaces, installed a new water heater, and assisted with certifying my pipes with the county inspector. From start to finish they were consummate professionals. Keeping their appointments, providing a free on site consultation, a written (and emailed) quote for the work, always ready and willing to answer any and all questions and generally went above and beyond for service. I called another heating company to diagnose a dead furnace in a condo. They found a bunch of wires pulled out of a connector by a previous tenant, quoted $351 for the part plus labor plus $79 diagnostic charge. The technician guessed that once the wiring was repaired he would find more problems and that the system would likely need about $1000 worth of fixes. Will came out, replaced the wiring harness for $55, found the vent motor siezed up, repaired it without having to replace it, then discovered that the gas valve was inoperative, had one on the truck, replaced it on the spot and wrapped the whole job for under $500. I contacted Will Hanson to give me a quote for AC install. Our 1940s house is usually pretty cool, but in the summer the lath and plaster walls can work against us and trap the heat inside. I had a great experience and I wanted to write this review so others can consider the UNIQUE whole house fan solution that Hanson Heating put in place. Will and his staff were prompt and courteous and came out to see the house right away. We had talked to another HVAC provider who had quoted AC, and Will offered to do the same, but Will recommended we go in an entirely different direction. One of the problems with installing AC was that there was no convenient place to put the compressor unit, which would need a concrete pad to sit on, would need to be 5' from the property line, isn't exactly quiet, and would need to be protected from the kids. Will recommended a side-mounted unit that we could jam in behind the house, but there was another good reason NOT to do an AC install. AC is expensive. We're talking about $5-7k installed. Maybe more. I got the same price range from the other HVAC contractor, so I believe that number! I guess there are a fair number of maintenance concerns, and frankly I'm not sure it would have been worth it to run only a dozen times a year. Will Hanson was talking me out of spending $5-7k installing AC. I was a little surprised. The other company had given me a quote and was quite happy to discuss all of the pricy options I could consider. Will hesitated to give me the quote and suggested I do something much less expensive. Will recommended we install a whole house fan (but with a twist). When you google "whole house fan", you find that it's a big fan installed in your ceiling that blows the air inside the house into the attic. The idea is that the hot air inside your house goes into the attic and displaces the super-hot air that's up there. The fan draws in cooler air from outside (you need to open the windows when you turn the fan on!) and cools down the house. I liked parts of this idea. The whole house fan is better than an attic fan: it creates a positive pressure in the attic that pushes out all the super-hot air through all of the roof, gable, and eyebrow vents. I like the idea of pulling in cool air from outside, especially here in Santa Rosa where we're blessed with nice cool evenings, even on most of the hottest days. But there were parts of the conventional whole house fan plan that I didn't like: the fan needs a huge hole in your ceiling to suck the air out of the house and blow it into the attic. In the winter, when you want to keep warm air inside the house, you're supposed to put a cover over the grate. Plus the conventional whole house fan is very loud. It pushes a lot of air. Like 5000+cfm! I understand that it sounds like a helicoper. So when Will proposed connecting the whole house fan to our existing ducting, I was intrigued. What this would mean is that the fan doesn't need a separate hole in the ceiling. The fan is connected to the existing HVAC return ducts. It has a gravity baffle (and the fan itself) which stops leakage when the furnace is generating heat. When the whole house fan is turned on, it sucks air from the existing HVAC ducts. 75% of the air being blown into the attic comes from our two existing return ducts that are already in our ceiling. The other 25% comes from the floor-mounted registers in each room. This is the smart part of Will's twist to the regular whole house fan: it draws heat from every room, regardless of whether the interior house doors are open or closed. It vents into the attic like a conventional whole house fan, which cools the super-hot volume of air that sits up there. It pulls in cool outside air into each room that has the floor mounted registers (which is every room). Plus, we don't have another huge hole in the ceiling, the noise isn't helicopter loud, and the price is much less than a traditional AC install. So maybe you're not as interested in HVAC as I am (I can't help it, I'm an engineer), and maybe you're not sure about the theory. Let me tell you about how it's worked since we had it installed: it's awesome. I installed temperature sensors on the wall near the thermostat and whole house fan rotary dial, in the attic, and outside the house. On a warm day the attic will be 110-120F, the house will be 80F, and by 6PM the outside temperature will be 75F and dropping. In a few hours the attic is down 20-30F and the inside temperature drops 10F. The whole house fan works. Will's unique twist dramatically improves the traditional idea. I can't recommend this enough. Kim was infectiously friendly on the first call and sent out a tech, Jason, that day. Jason arrived on-time and took a look at the problem. He gave us several different options and ordered the part we'd needed. He said it would arrive in about 6-10 days (due to it being an older heater,) but he set it up so the unit would work until the new part arrived. Unfortunately after about a day, it went out again. I called the company again just to see if there was anything we could do in the meantime. The owner came by that night- around 7 PM on a Friday- to show me how to "macgyver" the heater to work until the new part came in. Like most people I shut off my heat when I'm away for long periods of time. I returned from a long international business trip abroad absolutely tired and drained. Since I had shut off my heat before my trip my house was ice cold. To make matters worse, when I turned on my heat I discovered my heating system was not working. When we bought our house in Santa Rosa three years ago, we had no expectation that the Trane furnace, seven years old at that time, would fail anytime soon. So when it stopped working at age ten, we called a heating company with stellar Yelp reviews to come out for a service call. We expected that we were in for a relatively inexpensive repair. Their service person came out and then asked a manager to also come and assess the situation. We were told that the furnace was unsafe to operate and that it needed to be replaced (for several reasons including it being oversized for the house). Their replacement estimate was approximately $7500. We had no reason to doubt their assessment but always get another quote for expensive jobs. So we went back to Yelp and called JW Hanson. BEST MOVE EVER! First, a real person answers the phone. I got a callback almost immediately from Will. Joshua came out, as did Will, to inspect the furnace several times. They impressed us with their professionalism, friendliness and knowledge. Long story short, they agreed that the furnace was unsafe but were able to repair and modify it successfully for several hundred dollars. After a number of years of great service, I was told "were too busy to come up to your area", "we have no one else to recommend". Why? I thought that we had a good relationship? Always had a good interaction with Will. We were always patient and understanding while he was dealing the the vagaries of our installation. This included one time having to wait 3 weeks in the coldest part of winter with no heat and a person in the house going through cancer treatments. I have a hydronic system with a Lochvinar boiler that requires specific service. Guess I don't rate big enough for them. They obviously don't care about their previous customers. I could just go pound salt. I suspicion that Kim steers which customers will be served - and in a discriminatory fashion! Too bad, because when contacting them I saw on their website that they do AC installation - thought that I might have them do that job for me. I'll find someone else. I am overwhelmingly insulted especially considering that there are other people that have left reviews that are potentially even further out of the way than my location. In follow up to your comments, I was already paying extra for the perceived extra distance. What? That not enough? To quote you: "I am acting in a discriminatory manner, this is just a policy change that we felt we needed to make in order to better serve our customers." We contacted JW Hanson for duct cleaning, an assessment of our furnace and filtration after the Tubbs fire. The Hanson team found a way to modify their schedule to address our concerns at a time when no other service could attend to us for another 45 days. The price quoted was very competitive. The team was schedule in two days. They took care to protect our newly refinished floors with cloth tarps and explained the process. They were polite and cautious when moving furnishings. Adrian advised and installed a better filter for us and left us with a portable Hepa filter system to aid in continued air cleaning. Our home was spared during the fires but left us living in an area where debris removal is ongoing and affects our air quality. I called JW Hanson because of the great reviews on Yelp, and I was not disappointed. Like the others have stated, from the first phone call to paying the bill at the end, I was impressed. Our heater has never worked efficiently, and when our thermostat broke a month ago, I knew we needed to bite the bullet and finally get the furnace serviced. Now, our furnace works great. I didn't realize how inconveniently we'd been living all these years! Our house temperature stays at a comfortable level, and the system seems to be quieter overall. We are in the midst of an extremely complicated overhaul of our existing radiant heating system. The company who originally installed it and recently serviced it overlooked some alarmingly dangerous safety issues. Will Hanson identified the problems and offerred solutions at very reasonable rates.
