A random stop for rest at a neighboring hotel led us to a late evening meal here at JW Steakhouse. We arrived around 7:45 pm. The parking lot looked packed but the inside wasn't as busy as we thought it would be from number of cars. (Maybe the people were seated elsewhere where we couldn't see them, since the place looks huge.) We were seated immediately and our waitress, Triston, was there promptly to get our drinks. She answered menu questions about their petal sauce (which is quite good, even on fries) that comes on the Western Burger. The place was clean and the aromas coming from the kitchen were something I wish I could share on here. I ordered a loaded potato and mac 'n cheese from the sides menu to go with my unsweetened iced tea. My husband ordered the Western Burger with fries to accompany his unsweetened tea with lemon. The food arrived hot and steaming in under 10 minutes. My potato was hot, fluffy, and fresh and included cheese, bacon (which tasted more like ham, but it was still good), and green onion with sour cream and butter on the side. The portions were modest, which was fine because I ate for under 5 bucks (excluding my drink). Both the potato and the mac 'n cheese were both good. There was a warm roll on my plate, too, which I shared with my husband. His burger was LARGE and slightly charred on the edges, which he likes and was cooked to his satisfaction. The BBQ sauce on it was good, as was the side serving of the petal sauce. I loved his fries... so did he. I kept reaching across the table to steal them from his plate and dipping them in the petal sauce. I also swiped a few bites of his burger, even though I'm not a big fan of BBQ sauces, I really like this one. Worth the money (I think it was 10.50.) He also ordered the banana pudding for his dessert, which he raved about it. Triston was very attentive without being intrusive. She took away empty plates promptly and made sure we had anything we needed. She's an excellent waitress who works hard to keep visitors happy. Keep up the good work! The next time we're in the Dacatur area we'll stop here again and have a meal. If you're ever in the Dacatur, Alabama area on I-65, you should stop in and have a bite... or two... or a few. Even if you're not in the immediate area you should plan to stop by! You won't regret it. read more

I had an excellent experience here! Our server was great- very friendly and helpful. The restaurant and restrooms were clean. I ordered the salmon, blackened, with asparagus and a sweet potato. I was surprised to find the salmon cooked and seasoned perfectly. Not overdone like you normally get from steakhouses. And not too much seasoning. Just right. The asparagus was also seasoned nicely and not overcooked. I don't live in the area, but I'll be passing through from time to time so I'll definitely be back. A+ read more

First time at this place after driving by it for many years, ordered takeout, a western burger and loaded baked potato, first issue was my food was supposed to be ready in 20 minutes but it was over 30 and the middle of the day so a crowd wasn't the issue. Next issue was the hostess that took my money didn't bring me back all of my change, guess either she can't count or assumed that I didn't want coins back. Now the food, the burger was just ok, not much flavor, guessing that the meat wasn't seasoned and it was too big and very messy. The potato was very small and looked more like a "new" potato rather than a baked potato. All in all I'd rate the place below average and likely won't ever go back, to me it's not that hard to make a great burger and this was not. read more

Competent host and waitress. Food was absolutely nothing special. Smothered chicken was dry. Roasted asparagus was good but part of it was too chewy. Baked potato was fine but, sour cream came in a pre-packaged tube. Maybe I was expecting too much because the hotel clerk recommended this place, but it was just nothing special. My work gets JW steakhouse catered from pharmaceutical reps and it is always good. So when my family and I were in the neighborhood we decided to stop by and eat. I was looking forward to their fried chicken fingers it is always a hit at work. We waited 40mins for our food when it finally came the fried chicken fingers were so over done they looked like fried chicken livers. I immediately sent them back and the waiter said that "sometimes the fry guy gets busy and leaves them in too long" like that is a good excuse. By the way the restaurant is not even half full on a Friday night (now I know why.) My husband's Cod was also over done. The rolls was the only good thing in the restaurant. I did not order anything to replace it to be fair bc of how long we waited the first time. My son also got fried chicken fingers and he is 7 we had to send it back too it was so bad. We left and got Chick Fil a. My daughter did like her Alfredo and said it was good. I am so disappointed the catering and the restaurant is like two different people running. Update: The manager did come by right before we left and apologized for the food and said that they believe something is wrong with one of their fryers and removed my husband's cod off the ticket. We did pay for the pasta bc it was good and she ate it. So she did try to make our experience better. I am still disappointed but at least they tried to make it better. read more

We got there the Saturday before Father's Day. There were only one other table of people there. No one else was there. It was around 4:15pm. We were greeted by a hoard of teenagers, I assume that work there, around the hostess station talking. They sat us and then we waited. No one came within a few minutes. We were not impressed. We weren't given all of the menu options either. They advertise a special dinner for two at a discounted rate. That wasn't left with us. I got up and looked at the health score on the wall near us. It was in the 80's. I couldn't read what they'd done wrong, as they had it posted way too high to be easily read by the public. When I came back to the table, we had still not had anyone wait on us. SO we decided to leave. There wasn't an adult working there in sight. We left and went to LongHorn Steakhouse. It was worth the 20 minute wait to actually have servers that want your business. We'll never give this place another shot. They ought to have someone over 18 watching the floor for pete's sake, too. You see all these people there and not one of them waits on you in 5 minutes time...when you are one of two tables sat in the entire place!?! No wonder LongHorn was slammed when we went there, and they had only one other table sat at JW's. Geeze. read more

Decent food, awful service. Walked in at about 2:10 on a Sunday (they close at 3), took a couple minutes to get seated but nothing too awful there. Waitress could not possibly have been more disinterested in serving me: no smile, no welcome, just short and abrupt questions with a scowl on her face. Food itself was decent. Bacon cheeseburger was good and the bacon on it was nice and crispy. Mac and cheese side was in no way anything special, but it was a passable side. 3-3.5 stars for the food, 0 for the poor waitress. read more

This has been my favorite steakhouse for many years. But I always get the burger because no place else can touch JW's burger on flavor and size. Tonight was the last straw for me though. I told the waitress when ordering that we've had problems in the past with our burgers being over cooked, we would like them cooked medium. She brought us two very well done burgers. She and my husband talked me into sending it back. I get it back after my husband is done eating and it's still well done. I make her aware and she apologized. When paying our bill I find out the manager was made aware of our problems, but did she ever come to the table? No! Having been in restaurant management, I know what should have happened. And to top it off, the manager saw us leaving and turned her back and walked the opposite direction. Any time there's a problem in a restaurant set up like this one, every staff member knows what table it is and what the problem is. I will not be back! This was our third visit in a row to receive over cooked food. If you aren't going to cook to order, don't ask! read more

Used them for a catering event, the food was great. We had the steak, chicken and vegetable kabobs with a salad and loaded potato and homemade rolls. We also had two fantastic deserts. Everyone, including me loved it and yes I will be visiting one of their locations in the future as well as using them again for any upcoming events I need a caterer for. read more

Have eaten here three times and have never been disappointed.......now, I've only had their steaks so I can't speak for anything else...the sides were good as was the soup.....no bar though as its a dry county, but they supposedly voted on this in early November, so maybe they are going to get a liquor license/bar. This place is pretty good. I've been a few times and while it does have a some flaws, (the people who ordered lemonade said that it was very weak,) the food is still great. Both the chicken and steak are good, and while the wait staff is young and casual they are attentive. I wish the salad bar would have more more romaine lettuce. I think it's mixed in with the iceburg, but I'm not sure. Or maybe it's all iceburg. It's very close to my house, so I think I'll be going every once in a while when I feel like having a steak but don't want to cook or drive into Decatur. read more

Bad experience. Bartender spent too much time talking instead of paying attention to the rest of the patrons. Went to eat and they were putting a "wait" on because they ran out of silverware?? When we got to our table we ordered and went to the salad bar which seemed fine. I opened up the silverware they just brought and started to dig into my salad.......two hairs about 10 inches long in my silverware. Waitress asked if she should deduct my salad or I could get a new one. Wasn't interested in salad anymore. She was obviously busy but not very attentive. When she would ask "how's it going" or whatever, it was only a slowdown as she walked past, she wasn't actually looking for an answer. After dinner we had to wait for our ride so had another drink at the bar...same drink was $7 while seated, but $9 at the bar? Wtf. Would not recommend. And as a manager of people, I would fire the three clowns at the host stand. Seriously. Has to be a bette place to get a steak in this area. read more

Instead of being light & fluffy, the rolls are dense and hard. We scooped the moist insides out to eat which left a tough, hard outer shell of hard bread. The steaks are THIN. Honestly, the steaks here are only half as thick as you would get at any other steak house, but they don't cost half as much. Not bad! After seeing this joint for many years on my way to Birmingham we decided to give it a go. The service was sketchy at first as the waitress could not bring us adult beverages due to her age (Oh to have that problem in my life!) so we were at the mercy of an older person... apparently they only had one so the drinks took some time to get there. The waitress though, Anna was tenacious though and finally the drinks arrived. The food on the other hand was better than I expected. My steak was cooked right but I did find the meat a bit tough and dry for being cooked medium rare? The sweet potato casserole was wonderful although the portion was rather small. I had asparagus as a side and although tasty they were a bit undercooked. The home made chocolate cheese cake was great but looked like the piece was cut for an elf... Although none of the stated issues are deal breakers... they could be corrected with some Quality Control (QC). Most of the work staff looked rather young and perhaps some experienced supervision is in order to take this place from an 8 to a 10! Interesting is that they have an ALL you can eat and drink buffet and wine tasting (includes beers) every third Wednesday of the month. Cost is $30.00 per person. Seems like the crowd is mostly "upscale" locals which is not a bad thing. Something to think about. All in all I would go back. Enjoy! read more

The steaks are very inconsistent. I have had one of the best steaks of my life here and also one that was basically inedible. I normally stick with chicken tenders or chicken sandwich and salad bar bc I know those are always good quality. The worst steakhouse I've ever been too! Service was very poor. Rib eye was so thin it had to be a skillet steak. They would not remove our empty plates. Second time we've eaten here. Stopped in for lunch on Sunday. Pork loin was the special today. My wife had that and I had a veggie plate. The pork loin had a glaze on it that was sweet and the meat was dry. I guess you shouldn't order a veggie plate at a steakhouse but I did and wish I hadn't. The selection was very limited...no fried okra, corn nuggets, cooked carrots, etc. There was a veggie casserole that was dry but the mac and cheese was creamy and good. I had the salad bar as part of the veggie plate. Selection was limited to the usual items so I'd say there was nothing special with the salad bar. Overall, my wife gave her lunch a 5 out of 10...as for me, a 3 out of 10. Service was very good and the Oreo mud pie that came with our meals was the best part of the experience. JW Steakhouse was hired to cater an event for me. The terms discussed and stated in the contract were not followed. All they did was delivered the food to the venue and peered from the back watching everything that went on. No effort was made to ensure that salads were served to guests, a dessert table was set up, and guests' plates were prepared as they came through the buffet area. The first opportunity that I had to inquire about why things were not being handled as discussed and to request that guests' plates begin to be prepared, the person in charge never did anything to honor my request or the contract. When I voiced my concerns to the owner, who was not present at my event, he never assumed any responsibility or offered any apology and/or compensation for my dissatisfaction. I even shared with the owner that the temperature and seasoning of the food did not match the quality sampled at the restaurant. Additionally, the steak was quite rare and not a hit! The JW staff also did not arrive at the time that they were supposed to arrive, which might explain why they fell short of adhering to the contract. This was a HUGE well-planned event, and I had 30+ individuals/business people involved, and JW Steakhouse was the ONLY one to not do what was agreed upon yet was the highest paid. The owner stated in our one and only meeting not to worry about anything and that they would take care of everything! What a lie... they took care of nothing! My mother and I asked about hiring extra staff to serve food to guests at their respective tables, but the owner insisted that we not do so because it would take less time for them to prepare guests' plates as they came through a buffet type setup. When the time came, they did no such thing. Dessert was served to guests as they came through but as an authorization of a JW staff who knew my photographer's son, who said he was bored. How unprofessional is that? Don't get me wrong, he probably was old enough to work at JW Steakhouse, but he was not an employee of JW Steakhouse, and desserts were supposed to be in plates on the dessert table for guests to pick up as desired. I do not recommend JW Steakhouse for catering, and my family and friends will not eat at the restaurant anymore. read more
