Kabul Restaurant and Market in Antioch is a spot I can't wait to come back to. I ordered two meals: mantus and the chicken kebab with rice, and both were outstanding. The chicken was extremely juicy, tender, and seasoned perfectly. The rice was spot on--fluffy, well-balanced (I think it's Sela rice) The mantus were a highlight--really flavorful, well-prepared, and easily some of the better ones I've had in the Bay Area. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: all prepared food is to-go only, there are no dine-in options. Overall, this meal reminded me of some of the best Afghan food I've had locally. Very satisfying from start to finish. If you're going, I'd strongly recommend the chicken kebab with rice. And if the owners ever add kofta challow to the menu, that would make things even better. Solid experience. 100% worth a visit. read more

I eat here at least once a week. The food is delicious. The owner is very nice and goes out of his way to make sure my order is always correct and that I get what I asked for. The store has a Mom and Pop feel to it and has many middle eastern products. I have tried many of these products and find them quite good. I will continue to try new things from here. read more

This is across the street from Firestone, in the lonely desolated shopping center, beside Quickly. I was waiting for my car at the Firestone shop around noon, so I got hungry and saw this place. There were no other customers aside from me and my husband, so it was kinda awkward inside. However, we are glad that emptiness and silence did not deter us from trying out his place. The kabobs were delicious! The bolani ($6.99) was super fresh and really tasted home-made! A bit crispy on the outside and soft potato stuffing inside.... Mmmmm! Both of us got the kabob combination plate ($9.99)... 3 pieces beef teka, 3 pieces chicken teka, and 1 piece beef shami. All meat on my plate were tender, juicy, and flavorful. The combo plate comes with rice and cucumber salad. I noticed that a lot of people do take out. Anyway, don't let the empty room prevent you from trying to dine in. The service was great and the restaurant was really clean. What I'll suggest is that they improve the lighting and play some music, and redesign the place to make it a bit more modern and inviting. read more

Their Afghani bread is usually good although once in awhile dry and hard so either old or exposed to air. They know they are the only ones in the area that provides this type of bread so they really don't care about customer service apparently from the reviews here. They will learn the hard way as more people come here and maybe eventually they will have competition that they will not stay in business with that kind of attitude- that they don't really want to have you as a customer and they will do it their way - especially as word gets around. As for my experience, I just thought he was just rude and a grouchy man and I told my husband is it just my imagination but he says no he is grouchy and rude. We have been polite and nice and buy there on occasion but unless I have no time, I will now go to the two stores in Concord ( Persian markets with lots more stuff and great desserts-try apricot pastry- have to do a review on them) rather than deal with people who don't want business. My husband says maybe it is bc I am a " white woman" or he is a Pakistani after I read reviews then it made sense. Too bad bc I have good friends of all kinds and Afghanis that I know personally- silly that ignorant people think like that! Oh and I tried Mantu which I did not care for only mediocre ok- Chaman Kebob has much better mantu which tastes fresher and I liked it with peas/carrots instead of Kabul having it with dahl ( probably more traditional but I like the fresh taste of crispy peas) and Chaman has the sweetest people and friendly so I rather eat there! Maybe Chaman should start selling Afghani bread and get in on that market too! I would have liked to try other fare at Kabul bc the pictures looked good but always felt awkward since restaurant is always dark and empty and esp after reading reviews of customer service on that side - forget it! We stumbled upon this restaurant just driving around, so in we go. At 1230p the place was empty. We never let that deter us. :) It also smelled of fresh baked bread - I'm staying! My hubby ordered the Kebab Combo (ground beef, beef steak and chicken)Kebab plate and I had the Mantoo (a dish made with ground beef filled dumplings) topped with lentils and yogurt. Rephrase - my hubby wanted both so one was assigned to me. The meal started with a small dish of fresh chilled garbanzo beans with a homemade dressing. Both dishes were delicious but the Mantoo won! I'll be back to try other items. The menu is simple, 10 dishes - and I imagine all are executed well. Bonus - they have an Afghanistan market adjoining so I picked up some Sumac, Tandoori Spice, pomegranate molasses and some yummy nougat candies. If I could give zero stars on this platform I gladly would ! I honestly don't know where to begin. The location itself is sketchy and uninviting. If loo of supporting local businesses as well as foreign cuisines, I decided to walk in anyway. Right from the start I was greeted by a grumpy man that not only seemed pissed of at me for no reason but simply did not want my business. I asked if my wife and I could get a seat for two and without a word just pointed at a table and threw two menus at the table. We were taken back by his rudeness but thought hey maybe he's having a bad day. By sitting at the place it seems like a failed banquet hall which happens to have an afghani market inside it( more about the banquet hall aspect below). The place smelled stale and the decor and wall art just looked god awful. We placed our order and again being rude he told us that the mantu was no longer available. Given it was 6 pm on a Friday night , and we were 1 of only two tables occupied we were confused but carried on to pick another dish. After ordering I used the bathroom and let me just tell you, bathrooms at a prison has to be nicer than these. The doors don't even lock ! I was afraid the old grumpy guy would walk in on me any second! We got the food and it was the most bland tasting qabuli palow i've ever had. In all about the food and restaurant it self , 0/5 food was bland, place was uninviting and the owner or whoever he was, was simply the rudest person you'll ever meet. Now I to go back to the banquet hall aspect of it. I have a group of friends and there are 2 afghanis. All love afghan food and one of my friends wanted to hold his daughters birthday at an afghan banquet hall. Before I could get to tell him about my experience here, coincidently he had booked this place. The owner tells him that he has to either order from our store or bring his own food. What?? You're charging high prices and won't even negotiate ? He also states that he must bring his own plates and utensils because he only gives out paper plates and plastic forks. That is ridiculous ! Why on Earth would I want Plastic forms and paper plates at an elegant gather at a banquet hall ??? He was again being rude and uncooperative with my friend. luckily i got to him and he canceled the event. In other words, don't give your business to these people. They don't even want it in the first place and when they do, they will make you wish you never came. He argued with my wife too before about buying other things with Naan. I said I don't need any other thing I just want Naan that's it than he told me don't come here again. Today (sept 26, 2016), I went to this restaurant. I go there a lot. Today was a busy day for me as I was juggling interviews and phone calls. I went there and ordered Kabuli Pilao. I noticed obvious difference. The meat was not fresh. Instead of being light pink, the meat was dark red with some crust. I was real hungary and in a rush so I ate what was clean enough but kept the very bad looking meat aside so that I can show it to the manager so next time they improve quality. Also in the past, I have noticed very bad customer service. This is family owned business. The server after he brings the food, never returns to ask you if u need anything else. Many times, I had to go to where ever he was at the time to get napkins, spoons or some more water. This time too, I had to ask if there is anyone to bring me my bill. He said you can pay here. So I payed him there and went inside to bring those leftover pieces and complained to him about the quality of food, he started getting mad and told me to "get out". On hearing this his brother from inside came out and started cussing me "Get Out Motherfucker" and said "you are always complaining" and then attacked my country of origin "you pakistanis are like that. Is this the way to treat your regular (or any customer)? I have the right to respectable treatment, quality of service and food. Even if I was wrong, why he had to cuss me or attack my race? I always wondered why this restaurant was not busy and now I know why. I urge you to not dine at that restaurant since you will experience the same treatment if and when you disagree with their quality. read more

We didn't know this restaurant was around the corner. Friendly, clean and New. Prices are very competitive and food quality is A+. They also sell fresh Lamb from New Zealand which is a superb quality meat. I highly recommend this restaurant in Antioch. We saw all the good reviews and decided to try this place out. It's a poorly lit room off the main grocery store that needs to be painted. There was wall art with something Afghanistan-Machine Guns-and grenades on it that was unsettling, but who am I to judge? We were brought two flat diet cokes with little-no ice. Quite literally the most awkward meal ever. One other table in the restaurant and it was completely silent, no music, no noise from the kitchen, no whirl of central hear (was kinda chilly) all that was heard was forks on plastic plates. Was also fairly dark inside. Drinks arrived right before food about ten mins after being ordered (flat diet coke with three ice cubes THREE each). Although there was only one table no one ever came back to see how the food was (it was alright) or if we wanted refills. The entrees were good, but the bread was cold. The biggest reason I'm giving them only 2 stars is because it was LITERALLY the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant. We were the only table occupied, and it still took them over 15 min to even come get our order. After bringing us our food, our waiter disappeared and we never saw him again. We had to stand up and find someone to bring us more water, and then again when we wanted the check. A diamond in the rough! Visited for the first time today. Their prices were reasonable so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed! The place was empty and even though they were closing early, the owner was nice enough to have the kitchen prepare me a meal. The food was fresh and the portion size was perfect. The bread was also fresh and very tasty. This is good food for the price. They also have a store that's worth checking out. Look at it as part of the experience! I found a few treasures myself!
