The bougie vibe, the overpriced desserts and drinks, and a bit hard-to-find location will make you feel 'damn, I just found a bougie hipster place' But I will stop you right there because that's what I thought when I first came here. For me, Kafe Leopold is overrated. The desserts are okay yet I don't feel like they are worth the price and same as the drink. The coffee itself is fair, but the price is expensive than the other places. Guess we're paying for the vibe! It's surely located in such a beautiful place, I take some friends from different states to here when they want to visit the Georgetown area. Are you on a date with a guy/a girl you met online? This might be a good spot for you to take him/her. However, I wouldn't recommend if you're not a big fan of spending an extra amount of money when you can get the same stuff elsewhere... Tucked away in Georgetown's cobblestone Cady's Alley, Kafe Leopold is a tiny European cafe that even on a rainy Sunday gets busy surprisingly fast. They offer white cafe-style tables with pop of orange inside, as well as patio seating. Upon entrance, I was greeted by a friendly hostess and seated right away. Their menu offers a good variety of Austrian favorites and their brunch menu has options that you'd normally expect (quiche, omelette, etc). I ordered a melange and lemon pancakes off their brunch menu. The melange (shot of espresso, steamed milk, topped with foam and cocoa powder) was pretty good and had nice coffee art. My lemon pancakes, however, were the true winner. Three nicely sized pancakes that tasted like heaven - fluffy and delicious. They also have amazingly looking desserts, but I was so full that I had to pass...this time. Why 3 stars then? There was absolutely ZERO air circulation. It was super stuffy and gross, especially after I had my hot drink. Also my waiter was quite disinterested in his job. Short with answers, no smile, he was not feeling it. We have been going Leopold for a while. It is kind of tucked away. You can access it from the alley or from M street by going downstairs. Basically if you don't know about it you might never know it's there. It's really nice food, nice service and fantastic deserts. As a gluten free eater, I love that they have options both in the meals and in the deserts. They also have a very nice outside eating area that is available most of the time. It actual makes for a nice hanging out spot in the mindless of Georgetown. It's quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. If you need a break from all the shopping, stop by and relax. Have a drink or a coffee and especially try out there deserts. If around for a meal, you won't be disappointed. read more

After being seated, we were not assigned a server and had to basically ask every other wait staff if we could order. Waiting a while later - they finally assigned someone to us who just directly assumed we wanted tap water (other tables offered options of still or sparkling). We ordered and it was nice that food came out quickly. However, that's all the positives that can be said about our food. The brathendl was probably worse than Costco chicken on a good day. It was not only overly salty, dry, but basically just seasoned with pesto and too much salt. The escarole was overcooked/discoloured and the peach Bellini was just champagne with old rosemary ends. My girlfriend and I decided to try an Austrian cuisine for our anniversary celebration. The outdoor seating with brick veneer walls gave us an exemplary Vienna Alley vibe. The indoor seating had bright acoustic ceiling tiles with pendant light which produced a welcoming vibe. We opted for the calamari appetizers and a beetroot salad. The beetroot salad was presented well and the fried calamari had a crispy texture which was good. However, the attendant took away the plates while we were still in the midst of having the last few bites, and since I hate wasting food, I was a little perturbed. We got an Austrian red wine bottle and it was perfect for setting the mood. However, they did not have all the bottles mentioned on the menu as we decided to go ahead with this as a second option. Since the menus are paper menus I would highly recommend to alter the menu to depict only those bottles that are available. We ordered angus beef salad for the entree and this was really delectable. Cooked well and a tangy marinade. We ordered the macaroon platter for dessert and it had one broken macaroon. However, the hand crafted macaroons tasted really delightful. To wrap up the evening I wanted to energize my evening with a coffee and the waiter did not bring a stirrer to stir my coffee. I had to improvise with what I had. I'd give it a 3 star since the entree and food was palatable but the service could be more professional. If you are a double carrier of the X chromosome, you know that planning a girl's date out can be an absolute nightmare. Someone's not eating carbs, another person gave up alcohol for Lent, one girl doesn't want to drive, and another wants to make sure everybody is wearing stripes so they can post a photo of the event on their blog. Kafe Leopold is one of the first places that I have found that pleases EVERYBODY. There's cocktails for the lushes, coffee, lattes, and cappucinos for the eternally caffeinated, tea sandwiches for those on a diet, and poached eggs, Iberico jam, and truffle oil grits for the fatties (can you guess which end of the table I'm on?!). The restaurant is massive and the service is friendly. They even have a front porch where you can get some sun on a nice day. I'm not talking about the wait to get a table; I'm talking about the wait to order, to receive your food and drinks, and to get the check and after. I really wanted those poached eggs, so I ordered the grits. She said that she didn't like the grits much and recommended all the sweet dishes. Uh, no? Do you want me to faint due to my semi-sugar sensitivity? Anyways, the grits came around half an hour later. There was a sunny side egg and not a poached egg. Huh??? Ugh. Oh well, I'll eat them anyways. The grits itself was okay, but there was so much oil in the dish. It was like they just poured all the oil from frying the egg and all the prosciutto oil and dumped it in there. There was a ring of oil around the plate and all underneath the grits. Wow. 4 stars for a nice Australian venue in Georgetown. While many people have dogs in Georgetown, dog-friendly venues aren't as prevalent as you think. Fortunately, places like Kafe Leopold, located off Wisconsin down Cady's Aly, is a great place to take your dog while enjoying some excellent food. I ventured over to Kafe Leopold last Sunday around noon to grab some brunch. While the place is pretty popular, the venue has plenty of seating both inside and outside to make for fairly short wait times. I was seated in about 5 minutes and brought a pretty expansive menu. While the brunch menu itself had plenty of good options, it was nice to have so many choices, and many of those choices were rather unique due to the venue's Australian background. After starting out with a Weihenstephaner Dunkel (always great to find this tasty dark beer), I proceeded on to order a couple dishes. The first dish I ordered was an apricot crepe. It came out in about 10-15 minutes (the server was nice, but rather new and not so great about making brunch feel effortless and organized). The crepe was absolutely fantastic and made for an excellent starter dish. My second dish came out about 15-20 minutes after my crepe (my dog and I looked at the birds while we were waiting, so not so bad). I ordered the avocado toast, which was actually brought out with several different parts kept separate on a single plate. I really appreciated this approach because it allowed me to make decision with my toast (e.g. only a little of the tomato) and kept my toast from getting soggy with the eggs. All of the ingredients were rather tasty and made for a great second dish (and either dish would have been enough alone for someone with a smaller appetite than I had that day). Overall, Kafe Leopold is a solid dog-friendly restaurant with a great location and great food. I always have a great experience when I come to Kafé Leopold. I have been here twice before and the food is amazing and I love the ambience. Great for date night by candle light. Perfect for trying Austrian/German dishes for the first time. The dessert menu is not lacking! Many different options. They have brunch menu. They have cocktails as well wine and spirits- all the good stuff. I would recommend the mussels for seafood lovers. Absolutely my favorite dish for a cold day. The broth is sublime! Unfortunately, the daily menu for this particular Sunday was not cooperative. We wound up doing a grilled pineapple dish (one of the daily specials), a trio of team sandwiches, and a side of frites. All were delicious, none were fantastic or particularly unique. I think my favorite thing about this brunch experience was the Leolini (champagne and berries) and dessert. Choosing what we wanted for dessert was incredibly difficult. So many delicious sounding options! We finally settled on splitting a chocolate concoction with earl grey tea in it. And it was absolutely fab and yummy! All in all, it was a pleasant experience. The prices weren't too bad. Alright so wrapping up my short weekend travels and figured before flying out of DCA that I wanted brunch in Georgetown. Don't ask why but I did a quick yelp search and stumbled upon Kafe Leopold. This joint is tucked away in the back streets so make sure you find parking on the main street and walk on over. This joint is located next to a bunch of art galleries and definitely a pleasant spot to grab brunch. They have a few seats outside but also have indoor seating which includes a display case for all the pastries they have ready to go for the busy folks on the move. This joint has a full menu going starting at around 10:30 AM and its pretty ridiculous. They have a good selection of breakfast/brunch items along with sandwiches and salads ready to go as well. The service is pretty attentive and our particular server was very friendly and always willing to help us to make sure we had everything we needed. We decided to go with the waffles and the croquet monsieur. The waffles were pretty solid and the whipped cream was great along with the syrup on top of it. The croquet monsieur was pretty solid as well. The coffee that was consumed was pretty solid as well so overall definitely a fan of this joint. My friend and I stopped in here for breakfast after our bike ride into DC from Vienna. It was easy to find and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of M street in Georgetown. Many people tried the locked glass door - an arrow pointing to the actual door might be helpful. We thought might be closed, but someone pointed us in the right direction. The hallway into the restaurant had the unfortunate smell of dirty bathrooms. The coffee and food was delicious and fresh. Appreciate that the coffee drinks came with a decaf option. I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately it didn't really live up to my expectations. The place itself is really cute but the food was overpriced and mediocre (as was the service). I stopped in for brunch on a Saturday and they were able to seat us right away! The restaurant has a separate back area for events but I guess they also use it as a restaurant when they're busy, so that's where we sat. The service wasn't terrible but kinda slow (could also have been cause I was dyyying of hunger lol but it did take a while) Food: I ordered the medeterranian breakfast which was basically a Flatbread with ground lamb and veggies/eggs. Excellent food and service. This restaurant is a hidden gem in Georgetown. We decided to dine here for dinner. We did not have reservation but they were able to accommodate us without any delay. They served a hot freshly baked basket of delicious bread. The calamari appetizer was crispy and tartar sauce was flavorful. I had the flank steak Fortas which was perfectly cooked and juicy. The fries were also crispy and not greasy. The Leopold Hunersalat came with greens and perfectly seasoned grilled chicken breast which is a must try if mood for light salad. So, Sunday brunch after church may sound like a good idea, but expect Cafe Leopold to be packed and long waits for tables. We waited for their text based system to send a message to my cellphone, which never came in. So, they gave our table away. The hostess saw us multiple times waiting nearby, but even after I rechecked - The hostess then said their system was having issues, saying we'd get next table, but two couples were seated before us. And not even a meager apology. The waitress, sensing our displeasure tried to make up for it. Water, coffees, and brunch all ordered... but when delivered, my daughter's food is missing (another waiter took it we were told), and my omelette was incorrect. Rather than wait any additional time, I ate my eggs and made sure the daughter had her chocolate croissant. So, bad cooks and other waiters... ours was great and tried hard, but I can't say I was overly happy with brunch. We then talked to their staff about a private function later in the week, which appears to meet all our needs, that too was very well handled. So, overall, I think they get it most of the time... but this was a severe disappointment compared to our last time here. The dishes were delicious and they seem to have many options in dessert. I would say the only thing is things are on the heavy side because of too much cheese (and yes, there is a thing called too much cheese). But the Italian breakfast's mushrooms are so tasty, especially mixed with the runny egg yolk. I do think the yelp overall rating is underrated. What a cute find! I have walked by this place many times while cutting through Cady's Alley, but finally decided to try their brunch. It was a nice day outside so we took a table outside. There are plenty of umbrellas so you are not forced to sit in the hot sun. The menu was pretty extensive with a separate brunch and lunch menu offered at the same time. I tried the brunch special, lemon soufflé pancakes, and I was in LOVE! The portion was just right and the berry compote just made the lemon pancakes perfect. The flavors were all well balanced and not over powering. Our waitress was very nice and attentive throughout the meal, but we never felt rushed. I really liked the food and service and will definitely be back. I was concerned by the lack of staff response to a broken glass. A table nearby had a baby that knocked over a glass and it shattered on the ground. The parents cleaned up around themselves, but no member of the staff came over to help deal with the mess. I would be concerned walking around in the summer with sandals and not having a mess like that cleaned up quickly. My friends and I came here for brunch on a Sunday morning. We were told by the hostess that it'd be a 45min wait at least so we went and got coffee at Dean & Deluca's first. When we came back after only 35mins the same hostess told us they gave away our table 20mins ago and that it would be another hour for a group our size! I was ready to leave and go elsewhere but the manager overheard us and gave us a table that was meant for a smaller group. We had to squeeze in a bit but it wasn't a big deal. The food was pretty good. I had the truffled grits with Serrano ham and egg. Simple but satisfying. Some had the quiche which was good, others had waffles and such. The cocktails were also good. I had a whiskey and ginger beer cocktail that was refreshing and light enough for brunch. The sweets and cakes looked yummy as well. The place was very busy during weekend brunch and I felt this is a better option for midweek lunch or a late afternoon snack break after shopping. I'm used to long waits in New York but mostly it's because the restaurant is tiny. Otherwise I won't wait for an hour for pancakes or eggs. Great little cafe in the heart of Georgetown. I had so much delicious food and coffee. I liked the variety of vegetarian option. I had the tea sandwich trio with egg salad, tomato and mozzarella, and apple walnut. My favorite was the tomato mozzarella tea sandwich. It was warm, cooked like a panini, and had a yummy pesto spread. I also ordered the mushroom tart. It was my least favorite dish. The crust was chewy and the tart had very little flavor. I apparently ordered the wrong thing at Kafe Leopold. But before that, the atmosphere was high quality and I absolutely loved the orange and white color scheme. Also, the chocolates that they serve at the end of a meal are the absolute best (a little secret I highly recommend asking more for). What I got: - Rostbraten vom Angusrind (Skirt Steak): $26 The steak was plated beautifully and was very tender and enjoyable to eat. However, as I noticed in the photos of Kafe Leopold...they're really not super known for their steak haha. Although it's not their specialty, the food was beautiful and very instagram-able! If you're in the mood for steak and don't want any sweets, then this is a great and solid option to choose. In terms of their service, our waitress was split amongst several tables and it was a little hard to get her attention because she was so busy. This place is really cute! The desserts are good but OMG $7 for a little slice?! I walked over to look thinking they would be in the $3 range but no bless my stars I almost had a heart attack. We ordered something called Opera which was almond with some mocha and chocolate cake. The hot chocolate was yummy though. Came with this little hazelnut chocolate bar on the side. $3.50 for it and you don't get much. Everyone else around us was eating brunch items and they looked healthy and good as well. Think if I ever come back I'd like to try it out. The place was definitely busy even at 3:30pm on a Sun afternoon. Located in Georgetown this place is hidden in an cobblestone alley way. Parking is a pain in the area so expect to do some walking! The restrooms are really cool. You get your own individual stall with a sink inside! Never seen anything like it before. In May 2012, I had brunch here with my fiance (at the time), we were in the area to do a wedding venue walk through for our wedding. We both ordered the "Belgische Zuckerwaffeln" -- Belgian sugar waffles, the waiter took our order and headed back to the kitchen. He came back out 3 mins later to tell us that they had no more waffles, normally I would give have given this place a three for being unprepared, but the location is prime -- Georgetown's Cady's Alley. The waiter then suggested we try the "Kaiserschmarrn mit Zwetschgenröster" -- scrambled souffle with plum-compote and currants. It was delicious recommendation. I will definitely like to go back and try the waffles next time. They offer inside and outside seating, we choose inside and we're seated near the bakery area. Very clever -- since all the pastries look delicious. After we ate, we bought some macaroons to go with us. We had the chocolate, caramel, strawberry, blueberry and pistachio macaroons. My favorite was the pistachio ones, which was very surprising to me. read more
