Hopping two-floor Scandinavian coffee shop in TriBeCa. Can you tell their spirit animal is the sheep? Asides from the in-your-face ovis aries aesthetic, another thing that sets Kaffe 1668 apart is their assortment of juice blends. I ordered Good Addiction, which includes carrot, pineapple, apple, orange, ginger, beet, and lemon. Apparently it's freshly pressed and packaged each morning. Organic/raw/unpasteurized/healthy/high quality/undiluted/etc. and a litany of other adjectives. Was it worth $10 a bottle? I chose it based on the color! read more

I just got an almond milk mocha from here and I threw up after taking a few sips. First there was no coffee or chocolate taste, it tasted basically like just frothed milk, and that was probably the culprit. I cannot drink dairy milk. I've never had something so bad from here before. read more

This cafe has decent coffee, pricey, but decent. I have stopped going because they charge $1.25 extra for alternative milk in a cup of joe. This is an unseemly way to rip-off customers. One cafe nearby either does not charge extra, Laughing Man, and their coffee is quite good. In addition they are really a source of financing for charities. read more

They weren't so bad! (the staff) I've been trying to make it here for like a year but for reasons I can't mention *coughi'mcheapcough*, I kept ending up somewhere else. I finally decided to cut my latte calories and that means I need to know what's in my cup so I'm doing the real coffee shop thing. I know! If I just switch to plain coffee I can buy it anywhere without worrying if my coffee came from a bean or a syrup, but I'm a girl and I like lattes (and machiattos and cappuccinos)! Anyway, this is a nice, yet dark, coffee shop. The staff did not offer me hugs (or smiles), but they were just too busy for all thag. They weren't just snooty. The downstairs was closed when I was there so I didn't get to see it but I snagged a prime spot upstairs for my coffee and wifi (which they do have so be careful with confusing their 2 locations). The late was good. It was smooth, flavorful, and pretty *blushes*, but it was my best latte to date. You had one job, and alas, here we are. A small black coffee costs $3, and it will probably be the last money I spend here. Your coffee lids consistently spill liquid out of them. Now, at first, maybe I thought it had been loose, but after multiple occasions, this is simply not the case. Fun, trendy coffeeshop with both decent coffee/snacks and study space. If you tend to like quieter spots to work in though, this place might not be the best. Its proximity to Goldman Sachs means there's a constant stream of people during all hours, the music is lively and cranked up quite a bit, and generally there's a pretty hip vibe. Awesome for getting some casual work done in, not so much for when you're aiming more to hole up somewhere and focus. Couple of other downsides are that the baked goods could be tastier (they're fine but not great), and there are no outlets. Make sure your laptop/phone is charged before coming! read more

Come on fellow Yelpers, don't just say how great the coffee here is, actually identify the bean that you get and explain what's so good about it! Since reviews weren't great for helping me figure out which of the single bean options to go with, I had to ask the barista for assistance. "I hate bitter tastes. What is the least bitter coffee bean that you carry? And he steered me towards the Alta Vista by Robson viela, Cristina, Bairro da Pedra, Brazil. Since it's prepared and brewed to order, I was waiting for a bit, but I didn't mind, because I like the atmosphere of this rustic-style cafe. Cozy, dim, relatively quiet, lots of tables and seats, and interesting things to look at all around, like the individual bags of coffee beans for sale on the shelves on the walls, and the free Wifi is a pretty sweet addition too. There's only one size option, 12 oz, but they give you a 16 oz cup so you have plenty of room to add any kind of milk you'd like. Because for $4.25 for a 12 oz. cup of coffee (not including tip), it would be criminal to dispose of even a drop the way you might at a Starbucks. I was a bit skeptical - will the coffee REALLY be that good, worth the price? And I have to admit it was actually a pretty excellent cup of coffee. It's described as "a milk chocolate and almond body mix together with an orange rind and tangerine acidity." My palate is not very refined when it comes to coffee, so I detected none of these details, I just know that it was really nice and smooth and tasty, good enough to drink black. But I have a slight confession to make - I did not pay $4.25 for this cup of coffee. In fact, all I paid for it WAS the tip. How did I pull off such a feat, you may ask? I had stumbled upon Kaffe 1668's mailing list when I ducked in once to get coffee and use their Wifi. I didn't get any coffee that time because I didn't realize this was a fancy coffee shop with fancy prices when I walked in, but because I was on their mailing list I got a free coffee for my birthday. So finally, on my birthday I got to experience the coffee, and I get it! It really is good. But I'm not a coffee snob, so I just can't justify spending $4 on a cup of coffee for myself. So unless I'm really in a "treat ma'self" kind of mood, I probably won't be getting coffee here again (except on my birthday!) But I will say that for people who really appreciate a great cup of coffee, you're likely to find it here. And if you're not a fan of bitter drinks, get the Alta Vista. Or just describe to the barista what you DO like, because they know their stuff. read more

I went there on Saturday and Sunday and there was always a table for me to do some quick work before starting my day (I came around 9:30/10am. Super nice barista and overall very attentive. Their pastry collection also looks fantastic and my only regret is not trying one. You can easily miss the coffee shop if you are not looking for it. But if you do find it, it is amazing. read more

We woke up early and had some time to kill before brunch at Sarabeth's. It was a very cold and windy morning, and we decided to stop in here for some coffee and to warm up a bit. I had actually seen some Yelp reviews prior to my trip, but we just happened upon it as it was on our way. I remembered it once I saw the sheep dolls everywhere. It had a very cozy feel to it, with wooden tables, blankets, candles lit, and those cute sheep. We asked the barista for a recommendation. After determining what flavors I was in the mood for, he recommended the Brazilian Sitio. It tasted great. We relaxed for about 10-15 minutes, watching lots of young families come in and out, and a cute golden retriever waiting by the door for its owner. Kaffe 1668 is right down the street from where I work now, so I find myself in here quite a bit. I like it for getting some writing in after work, but I never come on my lunch hour because the food pickings are slim (and expensive). The coffee is better than you'll find in most random cafes, I'll grant you. But not being a coffee person I just find myself wishing their food was given as much care. There is nothing wrong with their food. It's good. It's not great. It's not worth the price. From the sandwiches to the pastry. If I come in here, it's after I've already made myself full elsewhere. I like the atmosphere quite a lot and I dig the space both on the top level and downstairs. I can see this being a good spot for group writing as long as the place isn't crowded. Downstairs, away from the counter and ordering and steamed milk noises once can get a lot done. The seating isn't super comfortable, nor is it super uncomfortable. The wi-fi is password-protected and you have to by something to get that password (it's printed on your receipt). I am a real fan of this idea. It keeps me from having to ask for it and keeps the person behind the counter from having to act like they're sorry you need to buy something to get online. Cafes that worry over the ratio of people taking up space to people buying food should consider this approach. read more

I have walked by Kaffe 1668 a number of times and just never found a good reason to go, but there it was... open and smelling of coffee one morning and I was walking by. The first thing that struck me was how big the place is on the inside. The facade is a nondiscript brick and windows affair, but the inside is a batcave of art, metal, wood, and couches. I really dug the vibe of the place. They even have their own Kaffe 1668 themed art, presumably done by local artists in exchange for caffeine. Their coffee selections are done with some care, their menu is arranged for both the curious and the mundane, and service is prompt, friendly, but no-nonsense. An interesting juxtaposition is the number of Financial District dudes who stand around the coffee bar in their Mad Men suits, talking too loud about golf and fantasy football and beating up prostitutes while all of us in our shirtsleeves wait for some murky, dark brew. It throws the atmosphere into a tizzy and makes me feel like a supporting actor in a David Lynch film. Do people watch David Lynch anymore? read more

Really delicious quinoa breakfast wrap. I felt like I was getting my day's dose of vegetables in a convenient, tasty, green package. The server was kind enough to substitute to-stay cup for a to-go cup when I requested one. My brewed coffee with oat milk was tasty, just the right amount of strong without being too acidic. ADORE this coffee shop! Consistent lattes with beautiful artwork whether to-go or in-house. Their sheep decor is so clever. There are sheep everywhere! More importantly there is free wifi throughout the coffee shop and outlets scattered around the seating. The wifi password is "ilovesheep". Good internet connection here. They offer almond milk and soy upon request. They sell their own coffee beans here. They close late past 8pm. Super clean bathroom and more seating is available downstairs if you can't find a spot upstairs. The lighting is a little dim but I didn't mind it as I was there to relax and just have a little pick-me-up. I don't think its too dark where you can't work especially when you have the great wifi and comfortable seating. But I'm sure someone out there will deduct a star because of this :) read more

I wanted to write a tip instead of a review but there is no option for that here... Ordered an Iced Matcha Latte, the cashier looked at me funny and told me they didn't have it. (I've ordered it here before. They do.) Asked her if they didn't have green tea anymore and she goes, "OH, we have green tea." This is one of those smaller, trendy cafes where you have to wait for limited seating to open up, and you're really impatient about the people sitting for hours working on their screenplay, but the second you get a seat you wind up setting up camp and doing the same thing. Coffee itself is pretty good too. If you're not a coffee person, try the Ice Chocolate Drink, which is exactly what it sounds like. Bathroom was closed when I was here last time and was told to use the one at Barnes and Noble right across the street. This place is super cute. There are sheeps everywhere :) I was working on a Saturday and came here for a change of scenery (this is much better than staring at a white wall). You can stay here as long as you want, it's all good. There is also a downstairs portion with a long table. Only downside to it is that that's where the bathroom is. I would recommend fully charging your devices if you come here to work/study. I wanted so badly to like this place. I did. All of the reviews seemed so good, and the coffee was absolutely delicious. I honestly had two of the best cappuccinos I've ever had in the States, so of course I wanted to love Kaffe 1668. But. It had a few fatal flaws that really ruined the experience for me. Firstly, the place was just so DIM. I understand the idea of mood lighting, but when most of the light is coming from your laptop instead of from the lamps that were on but were only emitting about five watts, there is a problem. I shouldn't be straining to see what I'm doing. Secondly, all of their food is preprepared. I had looked up their menu, so I was excited to try out a few things. But when it all comes out of a cooler, it's much harder to believe that it's special. I had the Turkey Club; it was good, but there's just something about a $9 cold sandwich that does not sit well with me. Thirdly, the top floor was completely devoid of outlets. I'm fine with doing my work on small cramped tables--it's New York, I get it--but at least provide outlets so that I won't have to relocate if my computer runs out of batteries. I ended up leaving to go to a Starbucks because there was literally nowhere to plug in my computer. So, in short, this seems like a fine place to go if you want to grab a coffee with a friend, but don't try it if you want to actually get work done. Went back this morning - we're expecting bad news at work today so I figured I deserved a good cup of coffee. A few updates: 1) They've adjusted their prices - drip ranged from $2.55 to ~$4. I don't mind paying anything in that range for good coffee - much better than the $7.50 per cup they had pre-recess-is-on. 2) The scone was quite good - beats the muffin I'd had back when they opened. 3) The crowd here couldn't be more sophisticated.
