One might argue that Kaffe 1668 is South of Chambers Street and technically not in Tribeca. But there is no debate about Kaffe being a delightful addition to the lower reaches of the neighborhood and a great complement to the triumvirate of Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble and Bed Bath & Beyond across the street. Kaffe takes its coffee and tea seriously, notwithstanding the clever cartoons and the flock of wooden sheep in various sizes. You can pick your bean or express your particular preference in tea. Kaffe also carries an assortment of baked goods and sandwiches. The beverages and food are above-average but not spectacular. Both the upstairs and downstairs spaces fill up fairly quickly, especially during weekends, and laptop-wielding, single-drink-buying customers are the bane of Kaffe and its wi-fi enabled space. But I would rather go to Kaffe than to the Starbucks on West Broadway. Maybe I should try their new installment in Northern Tribeca, its recent opening serving as a sign of this original location's success. read more

Kaffe gets a 3.5 stars vote from me. The staff seem to be a bit pretentious and I prefer having options for flavored coffee. There are no flavored coffees offered here but they can make a mean latte. There is only one option for size for the house coffee. I have to say the coffee here was very good. A smooth blend and not bitter. There is a self serve area to add simple syrup and milk. The seating area is communal and very cutesy. Great spot for meeting friends but not necessarily reading as it is dimly lit. read more

Kaffe 1668's got all the makings of a great coffee shop - sweet staff, above average chocolate chip cookies, plenty of periodicals to peruse, and a Clover machine for individually brewed cups (if you're willing to pay the price.) The look is Swedish industrial - which really means that there's a lot of steel and concrete here, softened by some Swedish sheep at the front that little kids like to play on. Kaffe 1668 is perfectly serviceable but be warned it's full of suits in their weekend wear, usually accompanied by their offspring. In a way, it's more interesting to go to Starbucks which arguably attracts a more heterogeneous clientele. But then again, maybe it's just the neighborhood? read more

Allow me to sum up my experience at Kaffe 1668 in three-word phrases. Seating is minimal. Lighting is bleak. Crazy, hella expensive. Espresso tastes great. Food is tasty. Now for the details: The espresso here was exactly what I wanted. It's robust yet smooth, making an incredibly drinkable latte! My first sip was nutty (soy milk), creamy, and foamy, but the espresso still gave plenty of flavor. A latte is about $4.50. Not only is that slightly above the standard price, but it came in an itty bitty mug. This is definitely a quality over quantity place, which is awesome when you want great espresso, but sucky when you remember you're not a FiDi CEO! The food disappointed me at first. I looked over the menu online before we went, and it looked right up my alley. However, I was distraught when we arrived and I saw all the food was pre-prepared and sitting on display in a cooler. In other words, no hot panini pour moi! I'm not keen on cold sammies, so I grabbed one of the rockstar salads (no seriously, those salads are stellar). Mine had kale, sweet potatoes, pinto beans, dried cranberries, and glorious chunks of avocado. Despite being packaged, it was flavorful and fresh as the prince of Bel Air. Oh yeah, and it came with a side of cornbread, which I will NEVER turn down. Not too sweet, not too dry, not too gritty. Loved it. After hours of staring at my laptop in this dungeon (the decor and design are lovely, but there is virtually NO lighting here!!), I needed to refuel. I bought the "Amazing Kale" cold-pressed juice. The prices weren't listed on the bottles, but I figured it would only set me back about $5. Nope! This baby, although hella tasty and packed with nutrients, cost me NINE dollars. NINE! I know fresh produce is expensive, but damn. If you're looking for juice, I suggest going a few stops down the street to Yorganics to save a few bucks. There was SO much about this place that I adored, yet so many things that prevented me from truly loving it. The lighting would be at the top of that list. Coffee shops should invigorate you, not put you to sleep. I don't think you could even read a book here unless you were seated next to the big windows! read more

This is my favorite coffee shop in NYC. I love it here ! The vibe is great for getting work done or meeting with one of my friends to chit chat. I usually get a skim latte' but I have definitely had their coffee. They now sell wine and pastries, and it's become So popular they opened a second location on Greenwich. It can get crowded, and seating can get competitive on the weekends. But there is a downstairs, also where the bathroom is. The cold brewed coffee is really amazing and makes trekking to Tribeca from midtown totally worth it. read more

Wow... lotta THIRD WAVE espresso places opening up in the city now. This place was f-n fabulous... Cool decor, and I tried the echo reserve espresso. Very nice, very smooth. woweee, tribeca, what a treat you have here. Now I *heard*, and this is only a rumor, but I *heard* that one could actually buy Geisha here. But when I asked them about it they said they only had it last week. And then they're like "you're going to have a very hard time finding that in nyc..." Not for long I'm guessing... Why is it Kaffe 1668??? They were opened in 1668???? By entering the cafe... It's a really warm cafe where you can grab a cup of coffee with your friends... If you are going there by yourself.. Prepare Cash!! There is a minimum amount of 10 dollars if you wanna use your credit card.. NY Times promoting Kaffe 1668 as one of the top local coffee shop in NYC... So took a morning walk which is about a mile away from where I live.. Ordered a skim latte and also a blueberry scone.. They only use the best milk from upstate New York.. No pesticide.. Wow.. Even the skim milk tasted rich and creamy.. They have a variety of homemade pastries.. Under their recommendation.. I tried the blueberry scone.. It's not too sweet.. Just perfect for my "NOT SO SWEET" tooth.. Unlike many bakery shops that fill their scone with icing... Ish... The have latte macchiato too... but I just got the latte... The coffee is not too strong... which I tasted mostly milk.. but it's not too bad.. This is probably why I took off a star.. I guess if yelp allows .5 star.. I will rate probably 4.5 stars... they have other organic coffee too.. Maybe I will try them in the future.. And check out their website.. This place deserves a five star for its cute decor! Sheep everywhere! The place has plenty of tables for personal use and huge communal table for sharing, though lighting is a bit dark. Now to the food. I got an iced latte and matcha biscotti. The iced latte was good but not the best I have had. However, from the taste I can tell the quality of ingredient is good. The biscotti sounded tasty but was just okay. Overall I'll like to come back again and try their brews (that's how you can tell the coffee is good) and maybe some other baked goods. Not a cheap place - my medium drink and biscotti was exactly $8 in total. But people working around the are probably won't give another thought spending the money. read more

My mistake was probably coming to a coffee shop for food, but I needed lunch and wanted to try something new. The have a whole lunch menu on their site (a PDF you have to rotate yourself, whatever), so I thought it would be a safe bet. I walked in to chaos. People are milling around everywhere, the place was packed and loud at 2:30pm. There are two lines, one for food and one for coffee. After figuring this out I asked the guy behind the counter for the lasagna (grass fed beef, onions mushrooms- it doesn't sound bad) and he tells me to check the freezer, he doesn't think they have any left. I should have turned around right then. I didn't know they pre-made everything and froze it....does this mean they microwave it to re-heat it? Why bother using organic semolina lasagna sheets at this point? I don't understand. Deciding to stick with my decision, I checked and confirmed they were out of frozen lasagna. So I went with the meatball marinara sub and butternut squash soup. While I waited on that, I ordered a chai tea. The area to add sugar and whatnot to your drinks is poorly organized. After dancing back and forth with a guy, I apologized, saying there was no where to go. He said, 'No kidding, this place is set up all wrong". The teabags are massive and hang off the edge of your cup...I had to toss it rather quickly before the tea started creeping up to the portion of the bag hanging off the side. It wasn't that great anyway. Finally I get my food. Nothing is hot, soup included. The soup had an interesting curry aftertaste that I couldn't appreciate because it was room temperature. The meatballs are unseasoned, the cheese congealed, and the sauce non-existent. There are a few chunks of tomato with the skin still on, which you could see when you opened up the sandwich. The photo I took makes the thing look delicious, but I left and threw everything out. In a garbage can outside, because other than the small holes at the coffee prep station, I did not see a garbage. read more

I have been going here for almost four years but it has never been my go-to coffee spot since there is a Joe's in Westfield and The Laughing Man coffee a few blocks up in Tribeca. I searched high (Uptown) and low (Downtown) for a good coffee in NY that resembled what I was missing back home in Australia (no drip, Americano stuff, proper Italian espresso, please!) and this place was by far the best tasting cappuccino I had. And the only coffee shop that lived up to the lofty Yelp ratings. Velvetty milk, delicious to the taste, no over the top bubble bath-foam-frothed milk, and no bitter aftertaste. Almost perfect! The decor is whimsy and comfortable, and the baked-daily items are worth spoiling your lunch for too. read more

If you are a normal person who just wants a cup of coffee, be warned: the "house coffee" here is sold Monday to Friday from 6:30-11:00 a.m. only. This, to me, is bizarre -- if it's a weekend, or late morning/afternoon (periods of time when I and other normal people drink many cups of coffee), I have to buy a $3.75-$5 pourover? I mean, they're tasty and all, but I find that utterly ludicrous. On the plus side, there is great seating upstairs and down, and the house coffee (when available) and espresso are both quite good. I was going to order my usual cappuccino but there espresso machine broke before my eyes. Several guests ahead of me didn't get their order. So I had a coffee. Apparently they have different origins. I had no idea what to order so I got an individually brewed Guatemalan. The preparation was interesting and similar to french press. They press the coffee in a cylinder of hot water. (Not my expertise so you should just order and watch for yourself). I tried a mixed Berry Muffin. The top was sugary and lovely. The berries were okay. Overall it was pretty delicious. We sat at the ground level communal table and I had a great 2 hour catch up session with my UCSD college friend Elise. The Kaffe played Goodwill Hunting and Hook on their projector screen. A fab cafe to get creative/ work or meet friends. Two floors of different sized benches and tables from 2 tops to large community tables. Wooden tables and benches with ..fluffy sheep... I'm giving it 3 starts, the most part, only for the shop's atmosphere. I don't know how to enjoy coffee. I was never a coffee person but the only reason why i went in was because I didn't sleep much last night and I needed a boost. Little did I know I had just bought the smallest cup of coffee for $4.00. I sat there thinking, "did they take the wrong order?" Then I thought, "Maybe they'll give me refills?" at this point I felt so ripped off that the bitterness of the coffee didn't hit me until I swallowed it. Bleh! It was bitter and i was bitter! I don't know how to enjoy fancy coffees but that was worse than drinking coconut water. Don't think I'll purchase anything there any more. But the shop is a very cozy place where you can study, read, hang out, so maybe the coffee is worth your stay at the shop? read more

My go to spot for an early morning breakfast of a croissant and good coffee. Service is curt most of the time, peppered with a little bit of attitude. One thing that bothers me is how casual and yet snooty some of the staff get sometimes. I once saw someone enjoying a sandwich while preparing some coffee. I'm pretty sure that's a health code violation. Everyone else was there alone or with just one other person and the amount & configuration of seating on both levels is rather limited. It's also very dark on both levels; especially downstairs, unsurprisingly. The coffee was very pricey; I got the least expensive cup of (regular) coffee and it was $3.45 plus tax. About half the size of the Kaffe just up the bend, but all the quality you'd expect from this Nordic cafe brand. Easily one of the better coffee shops in Tribeca, this smaller version is more of an express operation. Smaller menu, a smaller selection of of pastries, not as much seating, but the same great coffee and customer service. I'm not in this area much, but if I were, it'd likely be a regular haunt. Unlike the original location, I wouldn't call this the friendliest place to pop open a laptop and get some work done. Far more cramped, so if you're looking for wifi, you may want to stick to the tried and true. read more

The service is super friendly and genuine. My friend ordered a cold coffee and it was great! I ordered a latte and it was disgusting. It was like the milk was spoiled or the water wasn't good. I'm a latte queen, because that is all I ever order when I want coffee. So I know what I'm talking about. Something was off. I even let my friend try it, and he immediately spit it out on the sidewalk and we trashed the whole cup ASAP. I'd def go back because the guy at the register was very nice to us and the iced coffee was great. So, they deserve a second chance. I would certainly not order the latte again! I'm not totally in love with this place, but it sounds like that's because I didn't order the right things: coffee or food. I did get their seasonal pumpkin tea, which was original though not very tasting of pumpkin. They do have a decent list of different types of tea, though! I love the funky atmosphere: brick, paintings and photographs - lofty. I definitely appreciate the extra seating downstairs - I barely got a table - but the tables are a bit too close together, that I was not able to concentrate on my work. So, it's best to know that if you need more of a quiet place to get things done, this is not the place. On any other day, I would definitely have appreciated the buzzing of people - and would have ordered a coffee! It's a great place given its location - much cooler than any Starbucks! read more

Kaffe 1668 is one of the best places I visited when I was in NYC this week. I was looking for a place as soon as I got off the ferry from Hoboken, NJ to get some tea. I was looking for some place where they have a good selection of loose leaf tea rather than just the usual. They have a great selection of loose leaf tea and the Batista's know a lot about tea compared to many other places in NYC. I like their sitting arrangement. They also have a small sitting area downstairs in the basement, which is a great place for a group to hangout. I love this place and will be coming here often. read more

Great coffee, though the environment is VERY dark. We sat at one of the tiny tables with our cappuccinos to chit chat, but there were plenty of other people lounging with their laptops. I don't really see how anyone can do reading, etc. here since it's so dim, but if you head downstairs, there are more tables (and considerably brighter lighting). This is small and trendy with a dark and cozy atmosphere. Downstairs are the bathrooms along with some cramped bench seating. Like many coffee places, it seems to have become more popular than it can handle. The coffee itself is fine, but it can get crowded at the weirdest times. They have a selection of beans and the seating is cramped but typical of any business in NYC. On the bright side, it's still better than anything in Europe. I'd say this is a great place for a date if you can come at time when it's empty. There isn't much of a staff to interact with. They are all busy making orders. You should be easily be able to talk, and once you've set up camp, people are pretty respectful of your coat placeholder as you go to get a refill. On a warm summer day - or in fact any day - Kaffe is the perfect place to step out of the office and grab one of its signature coffees. A dimly lit atmosphere with wooden tables across the stretched dining room, Kaffe boasts high quality (but wallet stabbing) drinks. Get the cappuccino or latte and the bartista will make you a beautiful design on top; get a sandwich and receive a complementary non-sweetened iced tea; get anything, and be prepared for a long wait. This isn't your Starbucks where you can just take and go. The bartistas take their time, showing value for quality over quantity. The sandwiches I have definitely had better, though anything there is always a classic and safe bet. Behind the glass counter rests numerous sugary treats, including but not limited to my two favorites: the pistachio biscotti and the swedish chocolate ball. At least as my patience wanes as the wait for coffee drags on, I can munch on these delicious goodies - some of the best I have ever had. read more
