I had the honor of visiting this hidden gem on their very first day of opening in Newport, RI. They are popular for their crazy shakes and cafe selection. On the day I visited, they only had three flavors to offer, and neither of them seemed to align with my cravings. However, the owner was kind enough to create a custom crazy shake for me to satisfy those cravings. Pictured in this review was the matcha green tea shake with a scoop of black raspberry ice cream, shortbread cookies, and the Sour Airhead Extreme pieces. The shake itself wasn't overpowering and it was a neutral flavor, so the accompanying garnishes were complementary flavors. I devoured every portion of that shake, including the frosting (or fluff?). The ice cream is provided by a local source and it was exceptional. (The key to a great milkshake is quality ice cream!) The staff was very friendly and pleasant, and made appropriate suggestions. (It was hard for me to decide what I wanted in a newly opened cafe. We've all been there... lol) The shakes are pricey at $9-$10 or more, but in reality, you are paying for the shake and its garnishes, which allows you to snack while you drink. "Crazy" shakes generally tend to be priced in this range and it was worth splurging. Ultimately, I am excited to go back the next time I am in Newport. They are adding new items every day. It's the little things that make or break a place. The fact that my order was remembered after one visit 100% makes this place. Amazing milkshakes - the best I've ever had, frankly. If you're skeptical at nearly $10, consider that you're getting a whole candy bar and a very nice brownie in your shake. From there consider the work that goes into these; the quality is top notch, the ingredients are real, and the presentation is exceptional - it looks as good as the pictures, if not better. If Jackrabbit Slims can charge $5 for a plain chocolate shake in 1996 (and appease the discriminating palate of one Vincent Vega), I'm sure with inflation and the extras we can allow for a $10 shake in 2018. The shakes were not overly sweet, despite the amount of candy and chocolate. The balance was just right. I had the salted caramel, and while the only salt I tasted was from the pretzels, I found the flavor to be pleasant and refreshing. My better half had the mocha which was lovely. Deep, rich flavor that was as much coffee as chocolate - definitely a do-over though I'd like to try the one with the Fruity Pebbles in it. I waffled between 2 and 3 stars, and landed on 2 for this review. Why, you ask, when the product was perfection? The staff. My god the staff. The service. My lord the service. This isn't a drive-through... part of the experience is dealing with the help, y'know, and frankly that's part of the product. Snooty sneering aloof hipsters, the lot of them. This isn't Coachella; you're at work. Are the customers interrupting something important in your life by ordering? Are you above conversing with the unwashed masses? The place is quaint and clean. The hangover sandwich was excellent especially since we didn't have hangover. This allowed us to better appreciate all the wonderful flavors. The cappuccinos were good one with Oat milk and one with regular milk. However, the only person at the count 2/20 9:20 am did not appear to be off. I got the sense she was trying to be polite but there was a edge and vibe that left you wondering. We ordered our items . Took the corner table, removed our jackets and chatted. The cappuccinos were ready and I retrieved them and back to the table. The sandwiches were delivered to our table with an abrupt drop on the table in a paper bag. We thought perhaps they did not use plates. We were not sure if we were being asked to leave. Anyway, we did our thing continued to chat, took our sandwiches out of the bags and enjoyed them at the cafe. As we left, we noticed others were served with plates. read more

What a gem of a coffee shop! It's relatively new and I'm glad we bumped into it on our walk around Newport. The mocha latte I had was wonderful and the service was great. The other goodies they make looked AMAZING but we were too full from dinner to get anything else. I will definitely be back there the next time we're in Newport! This is a nice little coffee shop on touristy Thames Street, squeezed in between a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop and a Pinkberry fro-yo shop. When I say "little" yes I mean little. There's about three small tables and a front counter at the main window. Sitting at the front counter is great for people watching. Lots of people walk up and down Thames Street in the summertime. The artwork-for-sale on the walls gives the interior a funky artsy vibe. Kaffeology offers a little bit of everything. Just not a lot of it. It is a small shop afterall. A Panera Bread, it is not. Prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly. Andreea assisted me with a bright smile when I made a special request. It's sort of dark on the inside and not much room is available for spreading out your work (if you have work to do). So for laptop work and work in general I recommend Empire Tea (two locations) or Panera Bread. All three places can be found in lovely Newport. read more

We walked inside the store because of the milkshake pictures posted on the window. The pictures looked really good and after talking to the staff we decided to get one. We looked at the menu picture inside and picked the salted caramel milkshake. We were told the salted caramel won "best in RI". When we got the milkshake we were shocked. It looked NOTHING like the picture. The pictures that they put up showing their milkshakes are very deceiving. Other milkshake spots don't do that. You get what you see in the picture. My experience there unfortunately was nothing short of a disaster over the Labor Day weekend. They didn't get anything right, from service to the food itself. We placed an order through their online ordering system, which asked people to call the shop when they arrive, so they can bring them out curbside. 15 minutes after I placed the order, I called 3 times to no answer. I went into the cafe then to find an absolute chaos, with no one social distancing, tables packed in, and servers looking unsettlingly frazzled. When I managed to ask a server if they had my order ready and that I had tried to call, she didn't even know that they were taking online orders and instructing people to call ahead of their arrival. Not surprisingly, they hadn't even registered and processed my order. They started making the drinks, two coffees and a beetroot mocha latte. Two of my friends had ordered nitro cold brew, which they didn't have so we had to get regular coffees. The beetroot latte was quite clumpy, and it tasted old. I was excited to try them because they had so many drink options, all kinds of lattes and coffees with interesting flavors and twists, but the drinks we ordered just weren't executed well. Terrible service. I'm a regular here. I've grown accustom to seeing two women and a young man, more so the women. The women I usually see are a breath of fresh air. They always make my drink correctly, make the best recommendations (and are extremely accommodating when I ask if they offer some thing that's not on the menu. Ex. Frozen dragon fruit lemonade). Make the best milkshakes. Are very easy to talk to, I am always looking forward to the small conversations we will have while I run inside before work. On the days where the store is slammed and they can't really hold a conversation in the morning they still make an effort to say good morning. I also have to commend these young employees because sometimes they work shifts alone where the line is out the door. But they keep their heads cool under pressure and get people there drinks out as fast as humanly possible. I haven't been to the shop in a couple weeks as I've been on vacation, and it appears while I was away they hired a new employee. Since I literally had zero complaints before this visit I really wasn't expecting this awful of an experience. This young woman had slightly curly hair. She was awfully cold to me, didn't greet me. Rolled her eyes when I asked for a recommendation because I wanted to try a new drink. Once my order was complete and I moved over to wait for my drink. She instead went on her phone instead of making my drink. Nobody else was in the store and it took 10 minutes for my drink to come out. In the time it took to wait, I wandered over to the pastry display and was just asking her what the pastries were. She didn't appear to know and instead of going to get someone to help her, she huffed and rolled her eyes and then proceeded to ignore me. It's not great being treated like trash in the morning, it does put you in a weird mood for the rest of the day. It's not like I wouldn't come back (because the other workers are actually nice unlike this particular individual) but if I see this worker I'm walking right out the door. read more

Honest to God that was some of the best cafe food I've ever had. The avocado toast was amazing - the egg was cooked perfectly and the balsamic glaze was the perfect touch. The acai bowl was also very good and refreshing on a hot summer day. The refreshers were just as their name suggests - perfectly refreshing. Upon walking in I was more so baffled by the darkness and emptiness of this cafe, but I was very eager to give it a go.There wasn't much to read considering the menu was quit empty for a cafe... but I deiced to go with a muffin and a dark roast coffee. The coffee was subpar to say the least and the "house made" muffin, tasted a lot like my local stop and shop. Overall wasn't impressed to say the least. After reading all these reviews i couldn't help but write one myself. This cafe reminds me of Gordon Ramsey "Kitchen Nightmares" the episode with Amy's Baking Company... and we all saw how that turned out when you try to "school" your customers. My wife and I recently visited Newport and went to Kaffeology twice. The first experience was awesome! And the coffee was probably some of the best coffee I've ever had. The only reason I give 3 stars is because if you are not dressed like you are attending the Grammys, you will get looked up and down upon by the pompous customers waiting for their 7 dollar drinks. I also ordered 2 drinks on the 2nd visit, the first was made and then 7 others were made in between my 2nd drink, so I just took my 1 drink and headed off. Not a good ending to a good spot. I'll give it up to them that it was early in the morning and they were rushed by the Grammy people. Everything else was great! read more

Pretty decent coffee, they use a roaster from Boston. Unlike Starbucks or Empire, the beans do not taste burnt, and they do a nice job. The prices on the coffee are average for what you expect from a coffee shop. I was a bit surprised by the price on the milkshakes but after seeing them, I can understand the cost.
