I didn't research the restaurant Kai Burger and Dumplings before coming. The name caught my attention as I was walking by, and it made me curious to see what was on the menu. While unconventional, the name grabs you and makes you wonder if they can pull off combining burgers with dumplings. I have to say, for me, it's a no to the experience. The menu felt a bit chaotic, mixing Italian dishes, American comfort food, and Asian cuisine all in one place. I knew it was odd when I saw spaghetti and meatballs on the menu. Still, I decided to give the restaurant a shot and ordered a Double Smash Burger and dumplings. For me, this combo just didn't work! My palate did not accept this combination. While the burger was decent, the experience as a whole just wasn't for me. I absolutely did not like the dumplings with burgers. The decor added to the confusion, as it had an old feel to it like one of those old English Pubs that didn't match the concept. It feels like the restaurant is going through an identity crisis and would benefit from focusing on one style of food in my opinion. Are their burgers worth the price? No. I don't hate the place I just don't think it's worth it. We got a special deal on drinks and you could tell they barely put alcohol. One of the times I went there were little gnat flies around the table. The waiter wasn't paying much attention and we had to flag him down for a check. Super good smashed burgers! My family loves these burgers. Prices are super reasonable if you get the burger, fries, soda combo $12.50- can't beat it! I'm a fan also of the dumplings, salads and lentil soup! There's something for everyone here! The servers Clay and Frank are really nice and they aim to please. It's also a bar so some people come to drink and watch a game on tv but it's very low key. I've never seen anything weird or crazy here. read more

Wife and I went for lunch, I had the single patty burger which was ok. Not great. A double might be more substantial, as the tomato and sauce drowned the burger a little bit. If they could improve the burger a bit, would be really nice to get a great smash burger in this area. Wife got the Szechuan spicy cold noodles, one of her favorites. It was also just ok. Lacked authenticity and the noodles were a bit thick. Same with the soupy dumplings, skin was thick and a bit too slimy, meat/soup was a little lacking in flavor. None of it was bad, but none of it was great either. My suggestion is to lean into just burgers and dumplings and do them really well. Went in for my 2nd visit and decided to give a review. I ordered the Kai burger and my wife ordered their new menu item Beijing Noodle. Server told us they had new chef from Beijing and knew how to make the noodles authentic. Service was prompt as the restaurant was pretty empty around 11:45 am on a Thursday. There seemed to be a few take out orders though. The environment like an neo-retro bar with music from the 80's playing. It's pretty cool. 1) the Kai burger combo was a $21.99 before tax and tip. Although the namesake of the restaurant is based on its burgers, I wasn't overall impressed by it for the price I paid. Ingredients were fresh but the burger meat was a bit too smashed and had some burned tastes to it. Also the double meat patties weren't cooked consistently throughout. The sauce and condiments in the burger reminded a bit too much like a McDonalds Big Mac. The bacon and mushrooms that came with in the burger got overwhelmed by the sauce and dlightly chares bits of burger patty. The fries and can of soda that came with the combo were not very impressive, though I suppose they are necessary add-ons when eating burgers. They did try very hard though on this burger as it looks very good. Taste needs tweaking though. 2) the Beijing Noodle was top notch. Noodles were well textured and nicely warmed. The Cucumber toppings and meat sauce were also very good. I wanted to actually eat these noodles more. The Chinese centered dishes are very good. Overall I would rate this establishment a solid 4. Their prices for their burger is not cheap and with a premium price for a burgers I expected a little more. If they included fries and a drink with the burger for $18.99 it might be a little better, but I would say a decent lunch around the area for a burger with fries ans drink would probably run around $15-$16. Their Chinese centered dishes are much more on point and fit the area along with what other Chinese establishments have been doing. Their dumplings and noodles are great. I commend them for striking out and trying something that the Chinese community here probably have never considered. But as a restaurant where "Burger and Dumplings" are part of your name, they need to step up the burger game. I remember during my first visit when they first opened that the owner said he wanted to directly compete with nearby Peter Lugers ‐ to give the Chinese community of Long Island an excellent steakhouse experience at a more affordable price with dishes that also fit Chinese taste. The Zucchini Sticks were tasty enough but these Beef and Mushroom Dumplings made me feel like i was drowning in grease. I literally squirted oil out of every dumpling and grease soaked 5 napkins. We stopped here for lunch on a Saturday. I ordered the kaizilla quadrupole patty burger combo to which the waiter said "oh wow" so I'm guessing maybe no one orders it? I came here on tuesday night around 6pm ish. I liked the fact they have weekday (not sure about weekend) happy hour 2 for 1 drinks. The menu is extensive, ranging from burgers, philicheesesteak, steak, chinese food/dumpling/noodles to pasta! Its like you can come here everyday for something different. My wife had the skirt steak burger which was actual slices of steak within the burger which she enjoyed it (and generally she doesn't like burger). My daughter ordered spaghetti bolognese and it was just fine to me, nothing special. I had the chinese beef noodle soup which was mediocre, the noodle was the same spaghetti as my daughter but the beef was super tender. Overall I enjoyed my experience here and would def return to try other things. read more

Very impressed- great service, and truly outstanding food! The shrimp and pork dumplings are delicious- slightly crispy but not overdone and served with a tangy soy sauce (not overly salty) that compliments them well. The burgers are easily the best you'll find in the area. I was told they grind fresh brisket for the patties daily and you really can tell. The quality of the beef is quickly noticeable and all of the toppings are fresh- the sautéed onions and mushrooms are particularly good. Bonus points for crispy but fluffy fries. Had doubts when this first showed up in town with any combo fusion type menu, jack of all trades master of none. Daughter wanted a burger after Mathnasium so decided to give it a try figuring can't really mess up a cheeseburger too much. But wow, burger was really tasty and juicy on a soft brioche bun. Jaded from the bland burger joints we had in town, this a refreshing change. And that's just the burgers. Subsequent trips we tried their hometown dumplings and also in awe of their handmade pan fried dumplings. Nice thin chewy wrapper and crispy bottom. Meat fresh and hot frozen. Shoestring fries have a hint of McDonald's fry taste, and that's a good thing. Nicely salted. Bar always has patrons and they have a bogo happy hour that people seems to come and frequent. Stumbled by this place in great neck and was pleasantly surprised. I'm currently on a keto diet and saw that they had keto burger options. WIN! I was a bit confused at the price since the keto burger was 4-5 dollars more expensive than a regular burger and didn't come with sides but the portion was substantial. You get about 3 patties, 2-3 slices of cheese, and it's layered with lettuce and sauteed onions, with some tomatoes on the bottom. Actually quite delicious and i didn't miss the bread. I also wanted to try the keto dumplings but they were out so i got the veggie dumplings for my husband to try. I figured they have it in their name so it's worth trying. It was okay. Nothing to write home about. I saw some customers chomping on burgers and fries which looked pretty good. Will be back if I'm craving for a burger again! read more

Well let's start With the burgers, a good selection of single a double patty burgers, served individually or for a few dollars more, as a combo with fries. Toppings like mushrooms and onions, thick bacon and others are available, or served on specialty burgers, such as the Kai Burger! Since there were 5 of us, we ended up with variations of burgers, including a veggie burger. The meat was very fresh and smacked to a thin Pattie, however, very moist and tasty, and the double is really a good mouthful of meat! The meat is ground on the premises and is fresh, typically ground from a brisket can you talk, according to the waiter. I believe it is true, since the flavor of the meet was extremely fresh. The mushroom toppings were also fresh, these were shiitake mushrooms sautéed with onions! Very flavorful. We also ordered a dozen of vegetable dumplings, they also have half orders on those. These were hand made and pan seared dumplings stuffed with fresh spinach and watercress, served on a thin layer of crispy dumpling dough. Excellent flavor and just the right amount of dough! The service was excellent, albeit we were the only table there, and the waiter was very attentive and friendly. Other choices also included rib-eye steak and filet mignon. Good place to stop by for lunch in Great Neck! The Kai burger, double patties, is $18 but they make the patty fresh for each order. I loved the beef mushroom gyoza and can't wait to come back for the other dumplings. The dumplings were crispy and juicy and my parents kept saying how the skin was perfectly thin. Food was very good. We ordered the surf and turf with grilled vegtables. The steak was excellent and so was the grilled shrimp. The philly cheese steak was a little lite on the meat but the fries were delicious. This place is a hidden gem man. Restaurant fairly new. Small bar area with tables on one side and a few booths on the other. Two TV's on the wall too. Immediately, the blaring heavy metal music turned me off. I ordered the Kai cheeseburger which is an 8 ounce patty with a piece of pork belly, tomato, onion and indescribable sauce. Sadly, my burger came partly raw after ordering it with unforgettable French fries. The server took it back with a slight hesitation that basically set the atmosphere for the rest of the dining experience. 2nd burger was adequate. I give the place six to nine months. read more
