Was looking forward to trying Danville's new restaurant. We came in about 745 (online it lists its closing at 900). Hostess seated us immediately, as well as seating another party right before us. Waitress took a while to come and bring water and take food/drink orders. We placed our orders and about 5 minutes later, she came out and said that she had some bad news, the kitchen was closed and we would not be getting our orders! The thing we needed here that we didn't know we needed. The only nearest tiki bar is not a tiki bar but a sports bar that buys pineapple. The drinks are tiki strength (they are supposed to be strong, people!), the vibe is great, and the poke was exactly the perfect light and flavorful treat to go with the drinks on a sunny mother's day. The food was very good. Our son had the spam wasubi appetizer and really loved it although we didn't know it came with sesame seeds which he hates so had to scrape them off. He also really liked his pulled pork sandwich. My wife and each had a chicken salad. Very tasty and we were both amazed at the chicken they used. It was moist, very tender, flavorful and still warm. Best I think I have ever had. Personally I always expect cold, pre made, somewhat tough strips of chicken on a salad. But ours were delicious The staff was friendly and I loved the decor inside. Great vibe. I wish I could give partial stars I would give this 4.5. The only issue I had was that our table had these steel painted chairs. Yes they looked like something you'd see in a hole in the wall tiki bar, so matched the theme/decor, but they aren't really comfortable to sit on for an hour especially if you have a bad back like myself. Not really uncomfortable when you first sit down but with no cushioning it became uncomfortable for me. My wife didn't love the chairs either but she commented that other tables had wicker chairs so maybe we just make sure we get a table with different chairs next time. Ideally you get comfortable chairs that still match the island decor. read more

They were friendly when we were greeted at the door but after that we waited over 15 minutes to have some pineapple juice. Overheard the manager talking poorly about the customers because they were upset that they were waiting over 20 minutes to just get syrup. The manager never even apologized to them for the wait he told a server that he didn't want to deal with the customer because they were rude. I also over heard the waiter talking to the cook multiple times about them having to put things on the side because of an allergy after the second time of it not being done the manager told the server "it's fine it's fine just serve it" when the customer has an allergy. It was an hour after we were sat and we still had not received our food. We asked to close the check for what we had consumed and were told we could not do that. Then our food arrived after I saw that my husband's dish was sitting out for maybe 15-20 minutes. I saw the manager pick his ear then served our food to us. Did not eat the food. Needless to say we will not be returning. If I could I would leave 0 stars. read more

Went to happy hour and wanted to order food to take home on my way out. I get that the place is busy but when you have to ask your manager about placing 3 orders for takeout... not a great first impression. What difference does it make if we're eating in the restaurant or taking it to eat at home? Ambiance is ok, a bit tacky but it's a gimmick. I was excited to try this relatively new place out. Nice pics by Yelpers so off we went. The place is very cute and our server was great! But the food was not as great. The poo poo platter was odd. Most of it we're all 3 item count, for a family of 4, "sorry Charlie" you don't get one. The green curry seafood was so oily! Pools of oil to be exact. So unappetizing. The miso salmon, I should've listened to one Yelper about it being too salty. It was crazy salty! And then half the plate was a large decorative "smear" of more miso sauce. No thanks! Thumbs down dish! One Yelper said it was good so my wife took a gamble and lost. The poke bowl was tasty enough but it was basically virtually ALL rice. Not worth the money. The Korean boneless short rib dinner was tasty but the meat was thin, over charred and a little tough. One observation that sort of put another bad spin on the visit. We saw a man going table to table checking in on them making casual conversation. It seemed maybe he was the owner or manager. Well, he never came to our table, never made eye contact with us or even tried to see how our dining experience was going. Way over priced for what it was. My wife told me about KAIA's in Danville, mentioning it was new and had a Hawaiian vibe. My wife is Hawaiian and from Maui and I am a semi annual visitor to Maui, Hawaii; we know good local food when we taste it. Upon entering, the decorations did transport me to the islands. However, the food was a letdown. I ordered the poke sampler, which was small and tasteless. The mixed plate was also small and overpriced. My wife's loco moco didn't fare any better. Our daughters' dishes, pancakes, and a burger with fries were similarly unfinished due to small portions. The customer service was lacking until they ensured a proper tip. Given the experience, I disagree with the 4-star reviews. While the ambiance was beautiful, the food and prices didn't match. Perhaps adding a live local band could enhance the experience. Until the menu and portions improve, I'd suggest exploring other options for Hawaiian food. read more

I could go on and on about the great experience I had at Kaia's but, the best thing was by FAR Marc Antony. Not only was he talented, charismatic and best of all a sight for sore eyes. Wanted to like but as expected not as authentic as it should be if you're going to serve Hawaiian food. I had the kalbi but would be better if it was served with the macaroni salad not frozen veggies. The poke bowl lacked the umami flavor. Ohanapod mai tai was ok but not as strong as I would like it to be and for the price. Service was ok but she could have checked on us more. Ambiance was nice and thematic but it was hot inside. It didn't feel like the AC was on and especially on a hot day. Otherwise, if you're ok with semi authentic Hawaiian food and if you want to feel like you're in Hawaii that would be the place. read more

My husband and I wanted to try something new in downtown Danville. We always go to the same restaurant every week, mostly because we know the food is consistent. I talked him into trying Kaia's since it was totally different from our norm. We started with refreshing cocktails. I had the '44 Mai Tai and my husband had the Painkiller. They were both delicious but my husband's was a little sweet with coconut cream. For dinner I had the Kaia's salad with teriyaki chicken, shredded cabbage, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, cashews, and mangos. The mustard dressing tied it all together. I loved the dressing and asked for more. My husband had the shrimp bowl with vegetables and enjoyed it very much. Now the dessert......husband didn't want anything, as usual. I wanted the Hula Pie, but it was definitely big enough for 2 or 3. I talked him into it and it was so great, we both ate every bite. Highly recommend to save room for the Hula Pie! Average food not horribly bad but not great. We had the spam appetizer and the rice was not great it was dry the spam itself was ok. Fish tacos were ok, the potato salad had no flavor very bland. I don't think we will be back. Kids had the poke and they said it was very average not as good as the ones you get in Hawaii. While the service and ambience were fantastic, the food, which is on the expensive side left a lot to be desired. It's clear that the shift does not know how to cook fish, as the macadamia crusted mahi-mahi came out hard and dry, even after it was returned for a second try. Similar with the fish tacos, were the bits of fish were like pebbles. The locomoco came out cold and the meat was also as dry as a frisbee. The beef in shaved short rib dish was also very chewy. As a new restaurant, they have a long way to go to have returning customers. The chef needs to learn how to cook fish. read more

My friend and I had a lovely visit at Kaia's. First off, our service was professional and warm. The patio is so nice and spacious. The mai tai was delicious and packs a punch! Both of our dinners were tasty. My friend had the poke bowl, and I enjoyed the chicken salad. Both entrees did not disappoint. The interior space was very on theme and well done. This remodel does not feel like a throw it out there and hope it sticks kind of effect, but more of a thoughtful, dedicated effort. Kudos! Will be back soon. read more

I tried twice. Cute atmosphere! First time sat in bar area, had cocktails and dinner. Cocktail was very average (wasn't one of the specialties.) Service was good, everyone super friendly and checked in frequently. Ate fish tacos. Very very average, fish had zero flavor. They had just opened so, cut them some slack. Had to have Hula Pie and was hoping for redemption. Sooooo disappointing. Needs to be re-named, it's not anything like hula pie on Maui/Kauai/Oahu. The crust isnt nearly as chocolately, it's not an Oreo crust, and it's too thin. Ice cream very mediocre. There was no fudge layer on top. The Original Hula pie (Kimos, Dukes, Leilani's, etc) has about 1/4" of thick fudge on top then is coated with mountains of whipped cream, a landslide of macadamia nuts, and sits in a pool of more thick gooey fudge. This version had a little whipped cream with a LIGHT fudge drizzle. Not even close!! And it was less than 1/2 the size. Major major disappointment. Today went for lunch. Not crazy busy, was seated right away. The service ended there. The lady behind me said the shrimp bowl was good, so I ordered it because it definitely looked good! Husband ordered poke bowl. Son ordered burger and fries. We all drank water which ran dry after 5 minutes and took us asking and waiting another 20 to get refills. Shrimp bowl was delivered by someone we had never seen before and never saw again. It was good, flavorful, but nothing that you can't make at home. Teriyaki glaze tasted like it was out of a bottle. Server never came back to check on us. Took our order, and disappeared. Husband said poke was good. Son's burger was -"good " but not the best burger ever. Kid wanted dessert and I told him the hula pie would make him sad, so we got the "lava cake". Served on a freezing cold plate, a bite of gelato on top of a tiny round thing that looked like it came from Trader Joe's. Another bummer. Needed the check, as it had been an hour since we had seen the server. Had the busboy get him for us. While we waited for the check, a bday party table of 8 was telling the manager they had been there for over 30 minutes and no one had even taken a drink order. Please hire more staff, and at least have great service, then I can get over the average food. read more

On my second visit - Kaia's continues to impress . Our group of 7 walked in without a reservation on a Tuesday night. Despite it being busy - we were able to snag a table on the beautiful patio. The table has a built in fire pit which we enjoyed as the night got cooler . Our server was great and enthusiastic about providing menu recommendations . Everyone was happy with their cocktails and food . I had the Chi Chi cocktail which was amazing - if you enjoy coconut this is the drink for you . The Kalbi was delicious , flavorful and tender - the large portion allowed for a filing leftover lunch the next day . As usual the Hula Pie was enjoyed and devoured by our group - definitely a must have whenever you come to Kaia's . read more

We were seated at the restaurant. It was Saturday night just before 6:00 p.m. The restaurant had a few customers, but it was not overly busy. Nobody came to our table for over 10 minutes while we sat there. No offer of water or statement saying they'll be right with us. We just sat there as waiters and Hostess and management walked by us. Made sure my grandson had a fun experience here-- the food was REALLY good-- We shared the PuPu platter as an appetizer (excellent!) and I had the fish tacos. They were delicious!
