Sorry, Kaiyo Sushi, but in my opinion this one-star rating was deserved. The establishment is quaint, but with outdoor seating available you can enjoy a cozy indoor experience or some fresh air with your dinner. There were three or four booth tables that comfortably fit four each, two tables with chairs that fit four and one table with chairs for two. We came in, asked for seating for two, they cleared off a booth and we sat down. The server came up shortly, gave us our menus and asked, "Do you want anything to drink." I'm a sucker for the little things, so right off the bat I had a bad feeling about the place since there was no greeting of any kind. No hello. No smile. Nada. We went through the menu and made our order. This is where they really lost points - the food was bad. Plain and simple. No Bueno. Here's why: Vegetable Tempura - If you've been to the San Diego Fair and gotten any of their fried foods, that's how the tempura was. It was more like a fritter. It was heavily battered and not the light and fluffy tempura fry you would hope for. There was a pool of oil still on the fried zucchini, one of the broccoli pieces was black (old broccoli? Burned in the fryer? Who knows...), and you could squeeze droplets of oil out of the batter. Some may like this, we did not. Miso Soup - very bland, very thin, and no toppers (green onion, or crunchies, or that little pink flower that sometimes floats in the center). ALL rolls below - Three things: 1) The flavor of the rice was a bit off. Hard to figure it out, but it seemed like a light splash of soy sauce was coating the rice along with the rice vinegar used to make it "sushi rice." 2) they heavy handed the crab surimi, which was also pretty salty, so it affected the texture of the roll quite a bit and for people like me who like to dip their rolls in wasabi + soy sauce, the salt profile was just too much. 3) There was not any sliced cucumber or carrot on the inside to give it extra texture, flavor and to cut through the crab surimi - it was just a big blob of crab. Avocado Roll - The roll was rice on the outside and seaweed on the inside, so the avocado shot out of the roll as you took your first bite. You're left with rice in the left side of your mouth and avocado on the right. It's best to roll these with rice on the inside (so the avocado sticks to it) and seaweed on the outside like a traditional roll. Shrimp Tempura Roll - Decent. Could have been better if it weren't for the reasons listed in the "ALL Rolls" section above. Spanish Roll - Decent. Could have been better if it weren't for the reasons listed in the "ALL Rolls" section above. Baked Green Mussels - Flavor issue and service issue. 1) Service - when we asked for the check I asked them to remove the green mussels because they never showed up and she brought them out 3 minutes later. I get it, they're baked so they take longer, but 3-minutes after the request for the check and after all food had already been eaten is too late. 2) Food - the mussels were covered with Ponzu sauce. This was far from appetizing. Baked muscles get much of their flavor from the savory spicy mayonnaise that bakes on top, then from the smelt roe and finally from the lemon that typically accompanies the dish. No smelt roe, no lemon and instead... sweet ponzu? Not a good mix. Also, below the mussel was a bed of imitation crab. I was very let down by these as they are one of my favorite dishes to order. Lastly, after asking for the check (recall the mussels came out afterwards) we sat for twenty minutes and never got it. I finally went to the cashier and paid there (she gave me a total without providing the bill/breakdown). Point is, if I asked for the check, and you don't tell me to pay up front, then shame on you for having me sit there waiting for it. I think maybe this establishment is supposed to be more like fast-food sushi? If that's the case, then we went in with the wrong impression and perhaps my review is a bit more jaded than it should be. Also, as a parent who gets to go out once per month, this was a date night for my wife and I who wanted to try someplace new that was close to home. This sushi place has one of the worst costumer service in Chula Vista. We ordered our drinks twice and never received them the entire time we were there. When we asked for them the second time the server apologized and went to go get them ( or so I thought) only to never come back to our table. When I saw her 10 minutes later taking an order for a party of 6 I realized we were never going to get them. Oh well not the end of the world I guess, but definitely enough to make me never want to come back here. AMAZING! My husband and I are extremely impressed with this place! So glad to have a sushi place even closer to our house in Windingwalk. This is a new sushi place near my home. Food was good. Ordered some sushi and beef teriyaki bowls. Sushi was at room temperature which normally should be chilled. The beef teriyaki was room temperature and a little tough to eat. They did have a special that if you get a bowl they give you a free soft drink. The people in the kitchen were not Japanese, but they were very old asian people. Looked like two old grandparents. One of the hosts or waiters had to tell them in whatever language they spoke what to cook. The food did take awhile to get to the table and that might explain the cold food. They were very unorganized, but new restaurant and new people might be the issue there. They lost my check and I had to explain what I ate. I noticed they had made sushi a couple time and didn't know who it was for. The old grandma looking cook was storing the tempura on the floor in a metal bowl after it was cooked.
