Our first grandchild was born recently, so I'm a little behind on my reviews! We had lunch here about a month ago after church. I had intended on going to 101 Noodle Express, but they are no longer at this shopping center. We canvassed the other restaurants and landed here. I remembered dining here with several girlfriends, but it's been awhile. Hubby ordered the Hot Stone Pot Bibimbap and enjoyed it. I had the Galbi Tang, which surprisingly included a bowl of chilled soup as well as a bowl of rice. Of course, lunch came with a nice assortment of banchan, which I consider one of the bonuses of dining in Korean restaurants! I especially liked the omelet that was part of today's mix. I discovered Galbi Tang this year, and I have had it at several places now: Sup, Tang 190, and Vox Kitchen. Food is good. Workers are not that friendly. There is maybe one waitress that is really nice. But the rest are iffy. We like to get the combos like the Galbi, Bulgogi or Chicken teriyaki which comes with a soup. If you ask for a refill on the side dishes, be prepared for a well rehearsed guilt trip. Some may give you a look of disgust as they look you up and down. So just thicken your skin if you're in the mood for more aides. This is our super OG spot for Irvine residence for there soondabu fixes! It's literally been here for over 15 years and we've been here since the beginning! Yes the prices have gone up over the years with inflation. Yes they have now expanded to 3 locations. Yes the banchans have changed but the flavors and aunties are still the same. It's located in the ever busy 99 Ranch Plaza off Jefferey/Walnut. They do still offer your choice of hot tea or water or both if you want. The menu is pretty much soft tofus, combos, stone pots or some rice dishes if you're feeling something different. Yeah there is a lunch menu from 11-3PM M-F. It's pretty much a the same combo set of soft tofu with your choice of meat with a couple dollar discount. The go-to items are: Beef or Seafood Soft Tofu: All tofu dishes come with a bowl of stone pot rice, a variety of small dishes, and a raw egg. They no longer serve the small pan fried fish or but the small side dish seafood or green bean pancake is still randomly served. Yeah all the small dishes are refillable. For those looking for leftovers, super hungry or looking to share you can order the combo sets. These include a choice smaller soft tofu and your choice of meat; bbq ribs, bbq chicken, bulgogi, spicy pork, flat fish, stone pot bibimbap. These are great for those looking for leftovers for work tomorrow or just sharing. The aunties are usually pretty nice there but if they are super packed they do get abit annoyed if you keep asking for refills! Zero effort to explain anything or even converse the items or options while they try to rush you to decide (and it wasn't even busy). Meanwhile they will talk to each other at the register and it's hard to get their attention. It's just a very rude vibe and if you are not Korean, they barely even try and talk in English like we are supposed to know how the place works. The waiters need to actually try and speak English or learn the language of the country they reside in. Had the other branch in Garden Grove and this one is fine too. I'm just happy I don't have to drive to BCD anymore as this is just down the street for me. The plaza is generally crowded so it's no surprise there's a bit of a line here so I would recommend trying to avoid peak hours if you're just trying to grab a quick bite. The staff here was friendly, typical of what you expect from a Korean restaurant. They are super fast with everything to get you in and out as they should. Inside the restaurant is a bit tight as they really tried to maximize the amount of tables that could fit. Food wise, I was very satisfied. Usually most tofu soup restaurants be skimping on the intestines but I found they really provided a good amount. It tasted good and usually I don't eat too much tofu but I found that the texture here was pretty good. Please learn to treat others with kindness. I walked in for a singular napkin. No one was anywhere to be found so I got one from the self help section where all napkins are and hostess called me a thief. The napkin wouldn't have costed anything I offer to pay for it but she said no it's fine. The banchan was lackluster; I asked for extra but it didn't seem like they gave us any extra. It was seasoned cucumbers, bean sprouts, and kimchi. None of it was particularly tasty. The biggest disappointment however was the soon tofu soup. We ordered mild and it was basically flavorless, like it was watered down. The tofu itself was nice and firm but the soup was bad. Friendly servers who are always on point when a customer needs something. They always change up the side dishes whenever I visit. This time it included a fried onion pancake which was the first I'd seen. I love the dumplings soon tofu. It's always my go-to whenever I dine there. Kaju never disappoints! This is my go-to tofu soup spot and I have always had a great experience. This time I ordered the beef & octopus soup, which was loaded with a ton of octopus, and I had a bite of my friend's bibimbap. Yum! The flavor is there but the spice level is a bit low (maybe by one level). Considering that everyones spice tolerance is relative and varies, compared to other spicy tofu soup restaurants like BCD or those in GG or Buena Park, Kaju definitely has a more tamed spice for "botong" or "usual". If you regularly order the usual/middle of the road spice at other places, then you may want to consider going up one spice level here. The banchan is delicious and just like other korean restaurants, if you ask for more they will refill the side plates. The spicy cucumber kimchi is so good. The service leaves something to be desired even for korean restaurants where you need to be a little more direct and ask for assistance. They do not prepare the burnt rice (nurungji) properly. Usually the server is supposed to scoop out the rice from the stone pots into a separate rice bowl and immediately pour hot water into the emptied stone pot so that the remaining burnt rice can simmer and create a nice flavored base. Before we realized, the pots had already cooled down and when asked, the server poured what appeared to be cold water. As for the ambiance, they used to play loud korean pop music from a robotic serving assistant. The robot is a neat gimmick and works pretty well to deliver simple banchan plates. Unfortunately, the music was so incredibly loud that I could barely hear myself think, let alone carry a conversation. Perhaps the acoustics in the restaurant itself may contribute to the high decibel levels in the restaurant. But either way, I hope they move away from this playing music from the robot idea. It was cute at first but pretty sure aint nobody going back for the music. I will however be back for the actual spicy tofu soup and banchan though! read more

Waited less than 5 mins for the soup. I read reviews saying if you've been to bcd and are comparing the spice level that kaju is less spicy and I agree. I got a medium spice level at kaju and it was similar to bdc level mild. But it was still good. Very flavorful and a good amount of tofu and seafood. I loved the banchan. My favorite was the fish cake and the pancake. Personally like the kimchi at bcd more but it was still good. I can see the place getting busy at peak meal times so definitely try to come before the rush! Would recommend. Will be back. read more

They included bean sprouts, cucumber kimchi, cabbage kimchi, but the bean sprouts came with a funny/fishy flavor instead of the soy flavor I'm used to like the bean sprouts from Kaya or DooRe. My galbi tang was wonderful and the meat was so tender/easy to pick off the bone. It was pretty generous and came with four pieces of meat plus some mung bean noodles to throw into the soup. HORRIBLE customer service, CHAOTIC management on the floor. Jessica, our server, not only yelled at us when we were trying to confirm differences between dishes, but also didn't listen at all when we were placing orders, so ended up getting ALL orders on our table wrong. The entire floor operation was very messy and chaotic, as I later affirmed finding out that they didn't have a GM to run the place. Tessa was the only server that understood what was going on and went above and beyond to help and picking up the messy situation Jessica had created. Kudos to her with awesome customer service, positive attitude, and for saving our night from getting even worse. We later learned that we were not the only customers that had problems with receiving horrible service. As a matter of fact, there were many complaints received already regarding her service and attitude, and yet the owners decided to overlook.
