The items I got were the Yellow Mung Dal Soup, Steamed Veg w/ Lemon Tahini, Basmati Rice, Bitter Melon - Potato, BBQ Tofu, and Homemade Cinnamon-Raisin & Wholewheat Bread and Vanilla Sweet Rice for dessert. The soup was flavorful but be sure to eat it first since it'll get cold pretty quickly. The potatos kind of surprised me because they didn't look too seasoned, but they definitely tasted like it and in a good way. I even went back into the line for a little more. The cinnamon-raison bread was yummy and so was the vanilla rice dessert. I've never had BBQ Tofu but it was pretty good except it was a little too saucy, but I muted the boldness of the BBQ sauce a bit with the rice. The iced tamarind tea was excellent and great for washing down all the carbs. So glad to have found this place for vegetarian dishes! The temple and their food court is beautiful. The food is delicious/cheap. It's all-you-can-eat buffet for $10.00 per person. You can make as many as rounds as you'd like and the food is cook to cater so everything is fresh and hot. Another plus is that drinks and some desserts are included (I personally really like their tamarind refresher). As we approached this temple in a residential neighborhood, we were excited to find street parking right in front. As you enter the restaurant area, grab a tray and fill up your plate with vegetarian options. They have soup, salad, Indian food, steamed veggies, and fresh baked breads. You have choice of water or tamarind tea. Get the tamarind tea, even if you think you don't like tamarind or tea....it's good. After filling that tray head to the patio, you will want to sit here. The patio is peaceful and pleasant. The servers will come around to refill your drinks and offer you dessert as you finish. Take some time to look around at the stained glass. We wanted to come down to Kalachandjis and also check out the Krishna temple. It is a long trek to this place and a bit way out of the way. But the visit was well worth it. The temple basically consists of a very nice outside structure, a meditation hall, a souvenir shop and Kalachandjis. The meditation hall is very peaceful and just spending some time in the hall is extremely relaxing. This is a great way to be rejuvenated mentally and spiritually. Kalachandjis is basically a vegetarian buffet that offers a salad bar and hot items. If you choose to just eat salad+tea+drinks+dessert, it's only $9.95 per person. However if you want to partake from the hot items also, then the price is $12.95 per person - not a bad deal considering the purpose and the variety in the buffet. On the evening we visited, we had a cauliflower manchurian, two types of bread, lentil soup, pappad, spinach fritters, spinach wrapped in filo dough, paneer (cottage cheese) & peas, roasted okra & potato, brown & white rice, steamed broccoli and carrots and a bunch of other dishes. This was in addition to the salad bar! The food was excellent and you can make out that it was prepared with love. The two types of bread were fresh baked. The jalapeño pickle was awesome and adds a nice flavor to the food. There was also a tamarind chutney, which I didn't taste as I had too much food. The place was crowded and we had an opportunity to sit in the small patio. Very relaxing! People come by to pick up your used trays and plates and offer you dessert. My wife chose the kheer and I chose the chocolate cake type dessert (I don't know what it was). Both were excellent and were the right portions. You can also help yourself to the tamarind cooler (a cold sweet beverage) and or tea. All in all, an excellent place to dine and relax. We will be back. read more

Always wanted to check out this place so I decided to go for a saturday lunch. Man, I definitely made the right decision. First of all, it was hidden in some east Dallas neighborhood inside of a temple. Talk about hidden gems, this would be one of them. Walked through a door directly into the buffet line and they had plenty to choose from. I had lintel soup, two kinds of rice, spinach stuff, curried chickpeas, some tofu thing, and a side salad. The salad bar had all the veggies and then some, as well as 4 unique dressings to choose from. Given that I'm a carnivore a majority of the time, I was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the food was. My favorite part was the atmosphere. After we got our food we decided to go to the courtyard area. This place is adorable with beautiful decor, good seating, central tree of life, and a water feature. The buffet is mostly just a salad bar consisting of about 15 ingredients. And the other dishes that they provide are lacking in variety; about 6 different dishes at most. It's 15 dollars for mostly just a salad bar. My advice would be, just go to Jason's Deli. It's 8 bucks for their salad bar and you get free ice cream read more

Someone wanted to point out that olives have pits. I believe I covered that in my review. Pretty sure I actually said it first. The other thing I pointed out was that the other 2 types of olives were CLEARLY PITTED. Also, we received NO response to several types of messages to the management for 2 full weeks, during which time my wife had to start the process of having her tooth repaired. After she sent a Certified Letter to them, someone actually responded and offered to send her to their dentist to fix the tooth. Had they done this in the first place, that would have been fine. We wound up splitting the cost with them. In MOST salad bars, the olives are pitted. Feel free to do your own survey. I have loved this place for years, so writing this review breaks my heart. I spent six hours in the emergency room last night due to a mistake at the restaurant. I have a life threatening food allergy to one specific nut, cashews. Every time I go I ask if any menu items contain nuts, and they've always been very informative and done a great job. That all changed yesterday. As always, my boyfriend asked the workers what contained nuts and they checked with the kitchen staff who assured him that none of the options that day contained nuts. However, after eating the food I started to have a severe reaction. We called and the staff assured us that nothing from lunch that day contained nuts. I do applaud the staff for continuing to investigate after our call, as they called back to tell us that an employee had mixed in food from a previous batch from the school's meal. Sure enough, the previous batch had been made with cashew milk. It was a mistake that sent me to the ER and cost me upwards of $2000. I hope they learn from this experience, but it's too much of a risk for me to go back. Like I said, I've loved this place for years so I'm very upset about this. read more

This place is fantastic! I've been going here for years, now--and it's always a great place to bring new people. Kalachandji's is a vegetarian buffet located inside of a hare Krishna temple, so not only do you get delicious, healthy food, you get awesome service with a smile in a super cool setting. Definitely check out the temple while inside, and when it's nice enough sitting outside in the center of the temple is the way to go. We came around 8pm on a Saturday night and it was busy but not overcrowded. There were so many fresh choices, I can't begin to describe all the wonderful flavors!! I'm a vegetable lover now so I thought it would only be fair to try this place again. Everything here tasted okay. Nothing to write home about. My favorite was the tamarind drink on both visits coz it packed a punch. The famous bread is average at best, the lasagna had a strange earthy taste which I didn't enjoy(probably Amaranth?). Dal "soup" was so-so. The greens were bland(no seasoning whatsoever). I seasoned the greens with tahini to give it more flavor(I tried recreating a dish at Casa de Luz, Austin) but their tahini was runny and didn't taste like sesame not lemon. The rice and beans were more flavorful and delicious. Blueberry halwa for dessert was mediocre. But hey, they're priced reasonably and the atmosphere is unconventional. read more

My favorite place to dine in Dallas!! I love everything about this tucked away vegetarian restaurant and the delicious, simple, healthy vegetable dishes cooked with soul and generosity here. The ambiance is wonderfully peaceful, the service generous and kind, and the outdoor patio seating area around the fountain beautiful. Their steamed veggies are delicious with the Green goddess dressing (perfect bite of tang!), and last time I came I had a wonderfully cooked cauliflower dish. Covid has seriously affected many businesses and Kalachandji's is no exception. Have been coming here for over 20 years, but it's just not the same experience. Examples include metal silverware being replaced by plastic ware, proper plates now replaced with disposable to-go containers, elimination of self-serve buffet line, elimination of the salad bar, and the decision to move the payment process into the food line itself (a crazy idea which only slows the line down and makes for a less enjoyable guest experience for everyone.). These decisions all need to be reevaluated. The core menu and food quality are still outstanding, but longtime customers will definitely notice the difference versus pre-Covid. read more

A friend and I visited Dallas over the weekend and we were looking for a quiet spot to eat a tasty meal. When we arrived I was honestly about to turn around. You walk into a church hall and it just feels like we were in the wrong spot but we found our way to the restaurant and found some friendly locals behind us in line that told us we picked the perfect spot. The Indian food (even though it was vegetarian) was so delicious. The atmosphere is quaint and nice. Seating is limited in doors but they have a beautiful outdoor patio as well. I suspect everyone really just wants to eat at Kalachandji's again. Parking can be a pain. The ambience is really nice especially the inner courtyard area. The place has a sense of inherent charm and calm. It's an Indian vegetarian buffet that brings you simple food packed with flavor. Don't go here expecting super spicy tikka masala or biryani. It's home cooked food like jeera rice, lentils, vegetables. Their pakoras, vadas and their desserts are amazing. The menu changes daily. Definitely try the tamarind tea juice. It's so refreshing and unique. They have a glazed tofu dish on the buffet sometimes and that's just nasty. They really need to take that one off. Everything else is perfect! What could be better than this? Well, nothing!! You enter the temple, say your prayers and drown yourself in the holy vibes of the Lord Krishna. The beautiful paintings, holy music playing in the background, the temple bells, all of this gives you mental peace. As you exit out of the temple, they have the "Kalachandji's restaurant" which serves both lunch and dinner buffets. How perfect is that?! Although the temple and restaurant closes at 9:00 pm, we were able to find a table around 8:45 pm and we weren't thankfully kicked out. They have a menu everyday, which you can find on their website. They obviously serve strict vegetarian food and no alcoholic drinks (because we are in a temple). Although with limited options, they have absolutely authentic, delicious, home-like flavors. Every curry and dry vegetables have distinct spices. They have the salad bar in the end. I loved the almond salad dressing. Tamarind water is basically cold Rasam. Good for throat and digestion. Yay! I eat a lot, even from Indian point of view, and surprisingly, I was full with one round of servings. Once you are done with you meal, the server would ask you what dessert you want, he will give you options. Yesterday they were serving kheer (rice pudding) and mango halwa. We got both the desserts. I was confused at to how it all worked but you get food first and pay when a waitress comes by (no cashier here). As a vegetarian, I was excited to see all the options I had. It was lunchtime and I got potatoes, a black eyed pea curry, rice, salad and water. Dessert is brought out by waitress later to your table. My favorite thing about the temple is they display their lunch and dinner menu on their website every day they're open. If I see kofta balls then I'm on my bike and on the way! The tamarind cooler is something I could live on for the rest of my life, and if you dip the veggie pakoras in the tahini dressing you won't regret it. They also have cooking classes which is great, and they let you know which food items are dairy and gluten free. Enjoy! The potatoes and sprouts were cooked in a tomato sauce with the perfect amount of seasoning! (I actually went back for seconds) I spoke with the gentleman who was putting out the food, and he told me which dishes were vegan (there are a couple of dishes that use dairy, just ask and they'll let you know, if not, the daily menu indicates it as well if you look online). You must try the tamarind tea too!!! Please take a sample...you really won't regret it! The atmosphere is awesome! If the weather permits, sit out on the patio...it's probably one of my favorite outdoor eating areas in North Texas! It feels like you're in a small garden with a fountain right in the middle. This is a Hare Krishna temple with a restaurant attached, so respect that even if you disagree. If it bothers you or your faith, don't go. This isn't a commercial restaurant -- food is served to raise money for operating costs. Don't expect white tablecloths, special orders or toady staff to wait on you. This isn't typical Indian cuisine, nor is it militant meat-hating vegan. It is fresh and simple lacto-vegetarian food, avoiding meat, fish, eggs, onion or garlic as per their faith. The actual dining area is very small, only a few tables indoors but with a larger, beautifully manicured outdoor courtyard providing more space when the weather is agreeable. Buffet only (no menu) with an ink board describing each item, all clearly indicated for vegan/gluten/dairy. Just grab a tray and start, don't wait to be "seated." The selection may appear rather small(ish) compared to buffet lines at other places but, oh, what dishes they offer. The menu changes constantly according to what is available to the kitchen, as nothing used is frozen or canned. For my visit, we had yellow split pea soup, a couple of rice dishes, several potato dishes, mixed greens, curries, BBQ tofu (which isn't classic "barbecue sauce" but a nice attempt nonetheless), cornbread, poppadoms and a full salad bar with fresh cinnamon-raisin bread. Check the website for daily menus. The most surprising thing about the food is that even though it lacks animal flesh, it doesn't stand out as crunchy-green-grassy vegetarian. What is available would be deliciously different and satisfying even if placed unknown in front of you, and the absence of meat hardly registers. The quality of the ingredients and the preparation is such that it ranks not just the best vegetarian food I've had but among the best meals I've had of any type -- made even more impressive given the dietary and economic restrictions they live by. Prices are singular and fixed for both lunch and dinner, and include a drink and small pastry for dessert. A gift shop is included inside, and I assume the temple is open to all.
