This place has it all. Delicious food, serene setting, and reasonable prices. It's easy to see what is vegan and vegetarian. There's always different dishes to try, rice, and soup. I love the salad bar and the green dressing. They gave many fun items to top it with, like nuts and seeds. The green dressing is probably my favorite dressing ever! There's tasty little breads and drinks to choose from. Everything here is tasty! Following your meal, you'll be offered a choice of 2 desserts. Sometimes they do and don't have vegan options for this part. The outdoor seating is amazing! The seat by the waterfall is the place to be, if you can snag it. If you don't, there are many other nice spots to sit outside. Lots of parking out back, and you can visit the worship areas if you'd like. No shoes! We always leave full and happy from this place. What a phenomenal place! Kalachandji's restaurant is attached to the Hare Krishna temple, but don't let that throw you off; there's no overt religious messaging inside, everyone is welcome, and there's no proselytizing. It's a buffet-only, with a menu that varies daily. Everything is completley vegetarian, and most items are vegan. Most are gluten-free, as well, and anything that includes dairy or gluten is well marked. Lunch is $12 and dinner $15; much of the food is the same, but dinner is a bit bigger. (You can find the list of the day's food on their website.) The food is *phenomenal.* Most of it is Indian inspired, and the spices and flavors are craveably delicious. In addition to super delicious soup, rice, veggies, and usually a curry or two, there's usually one "Western" entree (lasagna, or enchiladas, or an eggplant dish). There's also a salad bar, self-serve hot water with a variety of tea bags, and really tasty tamarind drink. (The flavor is a bit intense, so you may want to mix it with water.) I always come away super stuffed! There's plenty of parking in a large lot. I've only visited on weekdays, once for lunch and twice for early dinners. There was never a wait to get in for dinner, and there was a short, fast-moving line to get in for lunch. I tried to come once on a Sunday afternoon, and the line was really long, so you may want to avoid peak times. I advise going in good weather, too, as there's a lovely open air outdoor courtyard which is especially enchanting in the evening. Karma free diet. There are a several reasons to eat here, and it's not just because of the delicious Ayurvedic style cooking. It's more, you get to feed your mind, body and soul. By eating here you support great causes and indirectly help others. When do you feel this good about spending anywhere? 1. The food is excellent, 100 percent vegetarian all the time. Food quality is high and they change the buffet menu everyday, which includes a tamarind drink and dessert. 2. It's amazing how good the food is here; however, the main reason to be a patron is because they support the Krishna consciousness movement, feed the homeless and care for the forgotten elderly. They're big proponents of vegetarianism and peace. 3. Ambiance is great, you get to eat in a garden with beautiful Indian art and music. Prices are probably on the lower end when compared to other popular Indian restaurants in DFW. Two of us had lunch for $21.90, at my other fave spot it would've costed $34 (selection may be larger with chicken and lamb options) but your money isn't doing as much goodness. read more

I love this place. My taste buds sing as I'm eating. The food is always excellent! Everything that they have is great, but my favorite are the greens. Apparently vegetarian blood breeds killer mosquitos, because everyone in my group was inflicted with unusually itchy bites while we ate. Definitely try to go in non-mosquito season, whenever that is. That said, definitely check this place out! You'll want to lock your doors and roll up your windows as you drive to its location on a residential street near Fair Park, but as soon as you walk inside, you'll be surrounded by peaceful aromas and smiling faces. Everyone who works here is so nice, and they'll let you wander through the adjoining temple (barefoot) if you're curious. When you walk in, make a left and then a right. Ta-da! There's the food! Well, what are you waiting for? Don't hesitate, just pick up a plate and dive in. There's no wait system or maitre'd. Check the board (or the website before you go) for today's offerings if you want, but really, you should try everything -- it's all delicious. Don't let descriptions like "soy nuggets" scare you away. Some dishes are spicier than others, but nothing was painfully spicy. Whatever you do, do NOT miss the bread section. The flat bread is awesomely interesting, and their cinnamon raisin bread is to-die-for. I literally had three pieces and felt like a total pig for going back for more, but not so much that it stopped me. Stare all you want, health freaks. I'm not a vegetarian, and I'm sure not on a diet. (Note: despite the fact that this is a vegetarian restaurant, I enjoyed it thoroughly...don't let the lack of meat keep you away, because the flavors are fantastic.) At the end of the meal, someone will bring you your check (I believe it's under $10/person for the dinner buffet) and ask you if you want dessert. Yes. You want dessert. Do not debate this. WOWWWwwww! I had no idea that Kalachandiji's even existed and I was so impressed with my overall experience dining here. The location of the joint is located in beautiful temple, which is something I've never experienced in the heart of the Dallas, Texas. The temple is filled with so much history and I was in shock with the unique architecture! I wish I was able to get more photos of the temple, but this will only make you all much more curious about exploring Kalachandiji's. Im definitely not a vegetarian but dining at this fine establishment has made me forgotten. The cafeteria style buffet provided so many vegetarian options which I enjoyed so much. I do love a good quality buffet (fat girl at heart)! I really enjoyed the potato side dish and I recommend all readers to try it! The curry is also very good and is strongly recommended! If you're nervous about eating inside a Hare Krishna temple, don't be. The restaurant areas are very clearly restaurant and there's nothing uncomfortable about it. You walk in the door and there's a sign pointing to where you enter the restaurant. You enter right at the buffet line, where there's a white board listing the dishes of the day in the order they appear on the buffet line with "spicy", "dairy", "vegan" clearly marked. A lot of the veg-only Indian food places I've eaten are the southern style - lots of dosas and very ultra spicy curries, but the curries here were more similar to what I get at other places, sauce wise. The okra + potato w/ coconut curry was my favorite, followed by the tofu curry. There was a nut loaf that was the token non-Indian dish of the day, it was really tasty as well. I should add I normally actively dislike buffets, but this was great. Trying a little bit of everything in the hot line pretty much filled up my plate so I skipped the salad bar (I can eat salad anywhere). I also skipped the really great looking fresh bread, though next time I need to be pickier and leave some room for it. It was all great. I didn't miss the meat at all. Most of it was not particularly spicy, the dal and the tofu curry had little bits of hot pepper in it but they were avoidable. The tamarind tea is really nice but you can also drink ice water or hot teas. They will come by and refill the tamarind tea and water several times throughout your meal. I was completely stuffed after my one plate but really wanted to try the desserts. These aren't on the buffet but they will bring them to you. When I went there was kheer and a blueberry halva which had a texture more similar to bread pudding than the carrot halva I've had in the past. They were both great. Definitely eat in the courtyard. The weather was nice when I was there but they also have heat lamps above the table so they'd be comfortable in slightly colder weather as well. It's a lovely courtyard. There are also plenty of indoor tables. The bathrooms were clean but a little tight. You pay at your table, they will split your check if you want. Tip generously because they feed the poor for free. (You should always tip generously anyway, but their generosity should be extra incentive). Om, Kalachandji's is one of my favorite dining places. Usually we came with friends at weekends after Yoga classes, or for Thanksgiving meal, such as today. :) The food is healthy and delicious, and the atmosphere is uplifting. For people who never came here, here are a few pointers: (1) This place is located inside a Hare Krishna Temple. You will see monks in saffron robes and followers chanting and dancing in the sanctuary, feeling spiritual. If it bothers you due to personal religious belief, don't bother coming . (2) The food served here is lacto-vegetarian and the sattvic diet (according to Yoga and Ayurveda), and hence no eggs, garlic, onion, leek, or mushroom (considered "sedative", leading to a duller state of consciousness). Most of the food is indeed vegan, with dairy- or wheat-containing items clearly labeled. (3) It is buffet style. You enter the restaurant and start serving yourself immediately and find yourself a seat. No hostness, waiter, or even cashier. However, near the end of your meal, there will be a staff (usually a nice Indian lady dressed in saree) asking you whether you want a dessert often a kheer or halvah) and then bring you the dessert (if "yes") and the check. (4) Don't expect fancy presentation of the food. The menu items are pretty predictable- usually a soup, a couple of vegetable dishes (occasionally with paneer), pakoras, rice, bread, and salad bar; for dinner, one extra entree is offered (which can be eggplant parmigiana, spinach lasagna, BBQ tofu, quiche, etc.). You can find the daily menu published on their website. The bottomline is- the food is DELICIOUS, full of flavors and spices!! Their tamarind tea is also wonderful. When weather permits, you can choose to dine in the beautiful courtyard. :) (5) Every Thanksgiving they offered a vegetarian feast, which drew a huge crowd (among vegetarians and carnivores alike). The wait can be long for entering the restaurant (i.e., 30 minutes or more), and parking (in the street) can be difficult. Be patient, since the heavenly food and amazing atmosphere is totally worth it. It is becoming our tradition to come here for Thanksgiving feast. The food was excellent as usual, ending perfectly with the yummy vegan pumpkin pie. My only problem was to fall into a food coma afterward due to over-eating, but how could I resist? the overall experience of visiting this complex of Temple and resturant is a good one and if you live in Dallas, go. That being said, I was disaapointed in the vegitarian offerings the night of my visit. while good, alot of it was not unique and can be had anywhere. The good things: extremely fresh vegetables and fruits, healthy food that isn't loaded up with grease or salt, and perfect for anyone with any sort of dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc). The brown rice and the eggplant curry were perfect. I did enjoy my meal. The bad things: the food tasted like it hadn't made up its mind on what it wanted to be. The food didn't taste spiced enough to be Indian, and yet the American dishes had a subtle and odd backdrop of Indian spices. This place is truly a diamond in the rough. Nestled in what looks like a residential neighborhood is a Hindu Temple that also houses this other-worldly restaurant. I thought I knew Indian food, but not quite like this. The buffet featured entirely vegetarian dishes that simply utilize whatever fruits and vegetables are in season. I enjoyed the experience of being completely transported outside of Dallas, TX inside the luminous walls of this gorgeous building. Fifteen dollars per person seemed a little steep for a buffet with no meat though, but that was the "suggested donation" that came on a green bill, so that's what we each "donated." Knowing that it's going towards the upkeep of such a gem makes it all worthwhile. read more

I have noticed an odd trend over the last 2 years where after I eat a moderately-sized plate I am unbelievably full and bloated. My boyfriend has noticed this as well. Very interesting place. It is located inside a temple, so the environment is definitely very unique. Food is served cafeteria style, where you go up to the food line and just pick and choose whatever you want for your meal. All of the dishes here are vegetarian, which is perfect for some but may be lacking for the meat lovers. Regardless, they offer enough to satiate those with the deepest stomachs. Since it's a buffet style, I would recommend grabbing/trying everything a little bit. I liked the curry style/tofu, and the meatball substitute looking things, which contained really nice smelling/tasting condiments/herbs. But again, I would just say try everything out. The place where you eat is really cool. It's like an open, outdoor ish area, with a huge tree in the middle of the courtyard. You sit around that big tree in booths or small tables. The sumbahr is always a favorite. The potato and okra was tasty too! I do wish they would hit all the dishes with a little more red pepper and warm things up a bit, but it was still yummy. If you have never been here, it has some interesting smells. But then again, downtown Dallas during a hot day has some pretty special aromas too. I have no idea how their food is so amazing, but this is my favorite vegetarian restaurant... ever. Somehow, they take vegetarian staples but make them way tastier than I've had elsewhere, despite their Ayurvedic cooking method that eschews garlic and onions. Steamed veggies with tahini dressing and perfectly cooked brown rice are always on the buffet, but I never know what kinds of curries they'll have! I recall having a paneer curry once and went back for thirds and fourths. Sometimes there are sauteed mustard greens. Sometimes fried slivers of bittermelon. But the vegetables are always incredibly fresh and cooked to showcase their quality. Dessert is my weak spot here, and you must leave some room for it. Usually I ask for half rice pudding and half halwa. The rice pudding is rich and creamy and perfect, and the halwa, usually full of seasonal fruit, is a nice counterpart to it. read more

I love yelp for leading me to this haven. I stopped by Sunday for the lunch buffet and was a little nervous walking in because I almost tripped on all the shoes on the floor at the entrance. I knew this was a temple walking in here but didn't realize exactly how close this was to the restaurant. Richard Q. and I were a little confused on where to go and how the whole system worked out but asked someone and they explained that you help yourself to the buffet, seat yourself and a waitress or waiter will be there to bring you a bill at the end of your meal. I loaded up on some lasagna, curried veggies, Dal soup, brown rice and some pakoras. All excellent! However, be aware of a container at the end of the line before the salad bar of these spiced veggies in a reddish sauce. THIS IS SPICY and incredibly delicious. The tea here is amazing too, the tamarind really gives it a kick. I absolutely loved the courtyard outside but didn't get to get the 'royal' booth Brian G. was mentioning but my dining experience here was wonderful. We ended our meal with some sweet bread and vanilla rice pudding....yum both were out of this world. Kalachandji's has definitely been added to one of my new favorite restaurants. If you have time check out the gift store as well, they have hand crafted handbags, books, jewelry, incenses, beautiful scarves and some home decor. I snagged an awesome tote with meditation chant printed all over for $17. I also read their website and saw that they offer cooking classes in the fall, I believe it's $25 a class or 8 classes for $150. I won't be able to do it unfortunately because of school but this seems like it would be awesome for those that have some free time! read more

I've been meaning to come here for years and finally managed to make it out here one Saturday evening. Even though it was cold, dreary and raining, the restaurant was packed. The food is served buffet style and is 100% vegetarian. I was really impressed by the taste and flavors- which despite the subtle western influences was super authentic! All the cooking is done with ghee which is a common ingredient in Hindu temple cooking. The delicious meal combined with a short visit to the temple next door brought back memories of similar ISKCON meals back when I was a child growing up in India. I keep seeing so many great reviews at this place, and i have been to the Hare Krishna temple multiple times but have never came to this restaurant, but I am glad I adventured out to this place. When you walk in it already smells wonderful- I love Indian spices so that was a plus and made my stomach growl. The decorations are gorgeous, making me want to go visit India again, truly. I wish they would have some Indian items for sale, but WAIT...they do! Stop by the gift shop after enjoying your meal here. The restaurant is buffet style, but just to go over a few items I had when I was there which I cannot say anything negative about. (which not sure if you know but it's all vegetarian!) I think it would satisfy any meat eater: Biryani (white rice mixed with masala and vegetables), chinese nugget (soy nuggets), daal (lentil soup)- to die for, tomato cheese quiche, chickpea, pappads (fried crispy thin chips), and they also have a salad bar to choose from. Their dressings were great, a lot of different flavors that I haven't seen before. Seemed all fresh made for sure. They have a slightly outside seating area, basically the roof is open. I loved that. Especially with the weather being so awesome in Dallas. The waitresses were attentive, walking around asking if we need anything even though it was self service. I ate at Kalachandji's last night. It was amazing Indian style vegetarian food. It is also a buffet. My favorites were a delicious barbecue tofu, mashed pumpkin with wonderful spices and freshly steamed bok choy. There were, however, lots of other choices. There is a mixture of squash, broccoli and carrots that are steamed had choice of brown or white rice. There was also a dish that had green beans and potatoes and another that was an Asian style noodles. They have a fresh salad bar with unique dressings, papadum, pakoras And a very unique tamrind drink. Besides the buffet there is also a gift shop and a beautiful temple which you are allowed to go into. I recommend you go there and take part in the entire experience. read more

The setting and food really carries you away to a different place... a better place. The patio is beautiful, with a fountain and tree in the center. At night time they light the tree up and everything, it's really something to see. The food wasn't quite as impressive for me, especially for $12, but it was still good. I just moved to Dallas from Los Angeles two weeks ago, and have spent a disproportionate amount of that time mourning the amazing vegetarian Indian food that I left behind in LA. Every single person who I have asked about vegetarian food in Dallas has recommended Kalachandji's. With all of my eggs in this single basket/beacon of hope, I was nervous that it would disappoint, and that I would be stranded on a desert island of mediocre (vegetarian) Indian food for the foreseeable future. Luckily, Kalachandji's is a home-run. My mom and I stopped by on Tuesday, and partook in the lunch buffet. First of all, the shady outdoor patio transports you to some exotic locale, far away from the Texas heat, but I believe that this bonus had been thoroughly discussed in the bounty of reviews. To be honest, patio or no patio, I was there for the eats. Now for the moment of truth: The mung bean soup with a cilantro garnish was on the top-ten most delicious vegetarian soups that I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The potato and eggplant was very hearty and satisfying. The mustard greens were bitter and delicious. Three days later my mom is still raving about the homemade raisin bread. The only doozy was a sort of redheaded step child lukewarm nut loaf, but frankly who cares? I will be back. Hopefully next time they will have bitter melon and/or jackfruit (my cravings are steadily increasing). A girl can dream. read more

Food: 3/10 Service: 7/10 Value: 5/10 Ambience: 6/10 TL;DR - Cafeteria style food with 1 or 2 decent dish(s) if you're lucky. Carnivores beware. All the good reviews are probably a bit skewed because only vegans would dine here, until people like me, an Omnivore (leaning Carnivore), came along. My girlfriend wanted to try it, and it seems like the best place around Dallas due to glowing reviews. I can tell she was also disappointed from the get-go. Heck, I don't see anyone going for a second plate, including us. You pretty much line up out the door, take a tray, and tell the server what you wanted. To our surprise, the chef here was full blown white American. I was hoping to eat Indian food cooked by Indian people but oh well. The place was pretty well spaced out and has a nice feel to it with all the plants and stuff. I tried to like the food, but they're just not compatible with my palate. If this is the best of the best for vegan food, then there's a very slim hope that I would be converted to one. I feel like this place might even turn some vegans into a carnivore (no offense). The service was great and the server seems to know when we're done and asked what kind of dessert we wanted with impeccable timing. Definitely won't be back. :( read more

This place is nothing short of phenomenal, a hidden gem in East Dallas. The buffet is all vegetarian but don't let that deter you. Today for lunch they served kofta (kafta?) balls that basically substituted for meat balls and gravy, and they were excellent. There was eggplant parm that was fantastic. The soup was great, the salad bar is fresh and plentiful. Be sure to try the fresh breads. The $9.95 price includes drinks and dessert. It is an absolute steal. Next time we will go for the Tamarind water instead of plain water. The wait staff was super friendly and attentive. I cannot imagine a better experience. read more

Had lunch here today and we were not disappointed. Food is very fresh and tasted great. Buffet choices are limited, but no complaints. Everything was prepared perfectly and did not suffer from "steam table" fatigue. I am not a fan of buffets but this one delivers! The fresh cinnamon bread was also awesome. We took home a loaf. The rice pudding for dessert was a great ending. Friendly service and we enjoyed eating outside in the garden. They turned on a heater when we sat down and it was perfect. Being in the Hari Krishna Temple added some more charm and took a few minutes to visit in the very cool meditation room. read more
