We tried this spot a few weeks ago, and it was amazing. We were a party of 7 without a reservation and lucked out. We grabbed a large table up front pretty quickly. The place was definitely a little short staffed, but man did the bartender/ host/ waiter/ greeter hustle!!! This guy was everywhere and somehow had the best attitude I've ever encountered! The margaritas were awesome, the house special (biscuits and green chili made from scratch), and the trash can nachos were all fantastic! No one complained and even the kiddos cleaned their plates. The atmosphere was awesome! What a gem. Overall the service set this place apart! The food is top notch and the atmosphere was a surprise! Really nice Mexican restaurant with great prices and delicious food. Stopped here on our motorcycle ride and will absolutely be back when we come through again. I have been watching the great reviews go by and finally got in there last night. This place is the bomb. My wife loves rellenos and stated more than once "Best rellenos ever" she let me try some and she could be right. I had tacos and they were all great but the standout for me was the fish taco. The ceviche appetizer was also excellent and was pretty much inhaled. I had a mohito which is odd for me and ended up drinking 2 of them. My wife loved her margarita. The place started getting busy half way through our visit and there were only 2 servers there - so service slowed down a bit but not much. Still, we were given my second drink on the house which they really did not need to do. Great experience. No doubt we will be back. We tried Kalaka after a hike because we heard great things about their "Trash Nachos." The trash can came out half full. Barely enough to feed two people. My first bite was a huge hunk of pork fat on a chip...GROSS. We ordered the green chile queso and it was a thick glob of cheese that broke the chips. The margaritas were just ok. Service was TERRIBLE. Teen host seemed really out of it. Left us standing in the middle of the dining room while he went to get a rag to wipe the table then shoved our menus and utensils into our hands and said, "there you go." Waitress was terrible. Never refilled our waters or asked if we needed anything. When we asked her for something, she just stared at us for a couple of seconds, repeated what we said and walked away. Really weird vibe. Charged for the chips and salsa, it was clearly jarred salsa, as I've had the exact same salsa at friends before. Burrito was a joke, not structurally sound, and had maybe half a chicken breasts amount of chicken. Enchiladas were the most tolerable part besides the tap water. One of the servers, Elio, talk to me about a trip to Mexico where he learned a little bit of a mole sauces, all because I stated I know a good mole before I ordered. This was my first time at this spot. I would say this is okay for me being that I am into authentic Mexican food I thought this would do the trick since I haven't been home in Arizona. This is okay but it's nothing like I thought it would be. I ordered the carne asada burrito something for my hands since I was driving back to Denver. It's missing flavor like the love was not there when thinking about Mexican food. The steak was not cooked to how I and my family would cook it. It was filled with rice and beans and not mixed so the first few bites where that. I ended up taking the burrito apart. Would I give this another go??? Probably not for the reason I don't live in the area and a bit pricey for something that wasn't flavorful. We just ordered delivery via door dash. It was so good! I had a steak bowl that had some really fresh veggies, great rice, avocado etc. and steak of course that was seasoned and cooked well. Have been twice and love having it in the neighborhood but was disappointed by the host's lack of mask etiquette when we were there Friday night - just about everyone else was flawless in their compliance but to have the guy up front wiping menus with his mask basically around his neck the whole time was nerve-racking - anywhere else I would prob stay away for a few months but we like the food so much we will give it another try . Fantastic little spot sort of hidden off of Evergreen Parkway. The atmosphere is great and feels like a fusion of modern Mexican with a cinco de Mayo feel. The Kalaka margarita is one of the best margaritas I've had in quite some time. The chili rellenos and tacos dorados were both very very good. Giant portion on the tacos so be prepared!
